The only reliable way to compare real-time AI video-generation models is to measure the exact interactive workload you plan to deploy. “Realtime” is not a guarantee that a model accepts live input, streams frames, or updates video while a user is watching. Verify the endpoint’s input and output modalities, then run every candidate with the same prompts, inputs, resolution, concurrency, and service conditions.

A useful comparison reports four things separately: latency (including response to changes), task-specific quality, normalized cost, and operational constraints. Vendor marketing and isolated price cards can help you choose what to test, but they cannot establish a cross-vendor winner. The official material available for current offerings does not provide a controlled, independently measured comparison of latency or quality under matched conditions.

What “real-time” means for video generation

For this comparison, real-time is a property of the workload, not a product label. A system is useful for an interactive video application only if it can produce or update video during the interaction quickly enough for the application’s experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the exact model and endpoint for:

  • Inputs: text, images, video, audio, camera frames, or a live stream.
  • Outputs: a complete downloadable clip, progressive frames, a video stream, audio, or some combination.
  • Update behavior: whether a new instruction can alter an in-progress generation, start a new segment, or only affect the next request.
  • Serving mode: hosted API, dedicated capacity, or self-hosted inference.

A model can be marketed as real-time while lacking video support. OpenAI’s GPT-Realtime-2 documentation, for example, lists video as unsupported. That makes it unsuitable for a video-generation comparison unless a separate video-capable endpoint is being evaluated.

Write down the user experience you need before selecting models. “Generate a five-second scene after a prompt” has different requirements from “keep a character moving while the user changes the camera direction every second.” A model that is acceptable for the first task may be unusable for the second because startup delay or update latency dominates the experience.

Define the workload before testing

Your test set should resemble production rather than a collection of impressive demos. Document the intended interaction, inputs, output target, and acceptable delay.

Describe the interaction loop

  • What starts generation: a text prompt, an image, a video continuation, an audio cue, or a live signal?
  • Does the user wait for a clip, watch frames as they arrive, or continuously steer a scene?
  • How often can the user issue a new instruction?
  • Must a change preserve the subject, camera, style, and scene state?
  • Is audio required, optional, or generated separately?

Fix the output target

Choose a target duration, frame dimensions, frame rate if exposed, aspect ratio, audio setting, and quality mode. Keep these settings identical across candidates whenever the services support equivalent options. If a candidate cannot provide an equivalent setting, mark the difference rather than silently comparing unlike outputs.

Build representative prompts and inputs

Use several prompt families, not one favorable example. Include the visual actions, camera moves, subjects, styles, and failure-prone details that matter to your product. If production uses reference images, previous frames, source video, or audio, use the same files for every model. Keep input files fixed and record their dimensions, duration, format, and preprocessing.

Include both ordinary and difficult cases: multiple moving subjects, occlusion, text in a scene, fast camera motion, a required object interaction, and an instruction that changes direction mid-scene. Do not remove failures from the sample.

Measure latency at the points users actually feel

A single “generation time” number hides the experience. Record separate timestamps for startup, usable output, steady-state delivery, and reaction to a change.

Four core latency measures

  1. Request to first frame: elapsed time from the request being accepted by the service until the first decodable video frame is available to the client.
  2. Request to usable frame: elapsed time until a frame or short sequence meets your application’s minimum quality and continuity threshold. Define “usable” in advance; a blank, corrupted, or obviously unstable frame does not qualify.
  3. Steady-state generation: the delivered frame rate or inter-frame interval after startup. Report whether the stream keeps up with playback and how often delivery stalls.
  4. Change-to-reflection: elapsed time from an interactive instruction to the first frame that visibly reflects that instruction, plus the time until the new direction is stable.

For complete clips, also record request-to-completion. It is useful for batch workflows, but it must not replace first-frame and update measurements in an interactive product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Capture the right timestamps

Use a monotonic clock in the client and log request creation, service acknowledgment, first byte, first decodable frame, first usable frame, each frame arrival, completion, errors, retries, and cancellation. Synchronize server and client clocks if you use provider-side timestamps. Store a request identifier and model version with every run so an outlier can be traced.

Report distributions, not a best-case demo

Repeat each prompt and input enough times to expose variation. Publish the median and a high percentile such as p90 or p95 for each latency measure, along with the sample count. Include minimum and maximum only as context; the fastest run is not a service-level expectation. Report failed, timed-out, cancelled, and retried requests separately.

Keep the test conditions fixed: account tier, region, endpoint, network path, concurrency, queue policy, prompt ordering, random-seed behavior when available, and retry policy. If a hosted service changes capacity or throttles requests, record that event instead of treating it as unexplained noise.

Score quality independently from speed

Fast output is not useful if it violates the prompt or falls apart when the user changes direction. Evaluate quality on the same outputs and keep the rubric specific to the task.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recommended quality dimensions

  • Prompt adherence: required subjects, actions, attributes, setting, camera direction, and style appear as requested.
  • Temporal stability: identity, geometry, lighting, and background remain coherent from frame to frame.
  • Motion continuity: movement follows a plausible path without jumps, warping, or unexplained acceleration.
  • Artifact frequency: count visible distortions such as melting objects, duplicated limbs, flicker, tearing, or unstable text.
  • Interactive coherence: after an instruction change, the scene adopts the new direction without losing important state.
  • Technical usability: frames decode correctly, audio (if requested) stays synchronized, and the output meets the required resolution and duration.

Use a written rubric

Define a small ordinal scale before reviewing outputs—for example, 1 to 5 for each dimension—with concrete anchors. A score of 5 for temporal stability might mean the subject and camera remain consistent for the full clip; a score of 1 might mean frequent identity changes that prevent use. Keep dimensions separate. Do not collapse them into one unexplained “quality” number.

Reduce reviewer bias

Blind the model identity where practical and randomize output order. Show reviewers identical prompts and inputs, and ask them to score each dimension independently. Keep representative examples of both strong and failed runs. If several reviewers are involved, report their agreement or explain how disagreements were resolved.

Automated metrics can supplement review, but they should not replace task-specific inspection. A generic similarity score may reward a visually similar frame while missing a broken action, flicker, or an instruction that was ignored.

Normalize cost to the same output

Providers bill different units, and output configuration can change the price. Convert each candidate to the cost of the same accepted output duration, resolution, audio setting, and quality target.

Alibaba Cloud Model Studio example

Alibaba Cloud Model Studio describes video cost as the output-video unit price multiplied by successful output duration in seconds. It notes that prices can differ by resolution, edition, and aspect ratio. Failed requests incur no cost and do not consume free quota, according to the pricing page. The page accessed 2026-10-13 lists Wan 3.0 480P at $0.041256 per second with a limited-time 30% discount. Because the discount is explicitly temporary, do not treat $0.041256 as a durable list price.

Make an apples-to-apples calculation

For a 10-second output, multiply the applicable per-second rate by 10, then add input, retry, and platform charges where they apply. At the listed rates, a 10-second Wan 3 run would be $0.50 at 480p, $1.00 at 720p, or $2.00 at 1080p before other charges. A 10-second Veo 3.1 Fast output would be $1.00 at 720p, $1.20 at 1080p, or $3.00 at 4K. These arithmetic examples do not predict your final invoice; eligibility, billing units, taxes, minimums, and configuration must be confirmed for your account.

Also calculate cost per usable second, not only cost per generated second. If a model produces 10 seconds but two seconds contain unacceptable artifacts, divide the spend by eight usable seconds. Keep that adjustment separate from the provider’s charge so readers can see both the invoice price and the quality-adjusted result.

Document the test configuration

A result without its conditions cannot be reproduced or interpreted. Publish a configuration block with every comparison:

Hosted API versus self-hosted evaluation

Hosted services

Hosted tests should identify the account tier and region because queueing, rate limits, and capacity can affect latency. Include provider-side failures and throttling in the operational record. If a failed request is not billed, state that rule; if retries are billed, include them in the cost model.

Self-hosted systems

For self-hosted candidates, record the GPU or other accelerator, memory, driver and runtime versions, model precision, batch size, parallelism, compiler or serving stack, and whether weights were loaded before timing. Report cold-start and warm-start results separately. A benchmark that excludes model loading may be valid for a continuously running service but misleading for an on-demand endpoint.

Do not assume a generic workstation is sufficient. Hardware requirements and compatible models vary, and the available vendor information does not establish a universal self-hosting configuration.

Turn measurements into a deployment decision

Use three primary axes: latency, quality on the target task, and normalized cost at the target settings. Treat operational constraints as decision gates rather than burying them in an average score.

Set hard gates first

  • Reject a candidate that lacks the required input or output modality.
  • Reject it if p95 change-to-reflection exceeds the maximum delay your interaction can tolerate.
  • Reject it if the minimum required resolution, audio behavior, region, or concurrency is unavailable.
  • Reject it if artifact frequency or temporal instability exceeds the product’s acceptance threshold.

Compare the remaining trade-offs

Plot cost against p50 and p95 latency, then annotate each point with quality scores and failure rate. A cheaper model may require more retries or produce fewer usable seconds. A high-quality model may be a better fit for a short, infrequent interaction but uneconomical for continuous generation. Keep the weighting explicit: a team optimizing an interactive editor may value update latency more than 4K output, while a rendering pipeline may accept higher startup delay for better quality.

Use a decision table

Question Evidence to use Decision rule
Can users interact with it? p50/p95 first usable frame and change-to-reflection Pass only if both meet the product’s delay budget
Does it preserve the scene? Temporal, motion, and interactive-coherence scores Pass only if critical dimensions clear their thresholds
Can we afford it? Cost per accepted second at the target settings Compare with the workload budget, including retries
Can we operate it? Modality, region, concurrency, limits, failures, and billing rules Reject unresolved deployment blockers

Do not publish a ranked winner unless all candidates were tested under matched, disclosed conditions. Vendor superlatives and different pricing units cannot establish comparative latency or quality.

Common comparison mistakes and fixes

Choosing by the word “realtime”

Why it fails: the label may describe text or audio interaction, not video generation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: verify the exact endpoint’s video input, video output, and streaming or update semantics.

Timing only the final download

Why it fails: users experience first-frame delay and update delay, not just completion time.

Fix: log first frame, first usable frame, steady-state delivery, and change-to-reflection.

Comparing different resolutions or durations

Why it fails: output settings affect both quality and price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: hold settings constant or label the mismatch and normalize to a common accepted duration.

Reporting one fast run

Why it fails: queueing and generation variance disappear from a best case.

Fix: repeat runs and publish median, p90 or p95, sample count, and failures.

Using one blended quality score

Why it fails: a high visual score can hide broken motion or ignored instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: report prompt adherence, temporal stability, motion continuity, artifacts, and interactive coherence separately.

Treating a discount as a permanent price

Why it fails: promotions and regional terms change.

Fix: carry the discount’s date and scope with the figure and verify the live pricing page before committing budget.

Ignoring failed and retried jobs

Why it fails: the nominal per-second rate may not represent the cost of accepted output.

A practical comparison worksheet

  1. Write the interactive use case and acceptance thresholds for latency, quality, and cost.
  2. Select representative prompts, reference inputs, difficult cases, and change instructions.
  3. Choose candidates that actually support the required modalities and output settings.
  4. Freeze model versions, regions, tiers, concurrency, prompts, inputs, and output configuration.
  5. Implement timestamp and error logging for every request and frame.
  6. Run repeated trials, including warm and cold starts where relevant.
  7. Score outputs with a written, preferably blinded rubric.
  8. Normalize invoice cost to the same accepted output duration and quality target.
  9. Publish medians, high percentiles, sample counts, failures, retries, and all test conditions.
  10. Apply hard gates, then choose the trade-off that matches the product rather than declaring a universal winner.

What the available public evidence can—and cannot—tell you

Current official pricing pages provide useful examples of billing units and configuration-dependent rates. They do not provide a controlled, independently measured cross-vendor benchmark for latency or video quality. The figures above are therefore planning inputs, not proof that one service is faster, better, or cheaper for your workload.

The responsible conclusion is to build a repeatable harness and test the exact models, endpoints, and settings you intend to deploy. Re-run the suite when a model version, region, service tier, or price changes; otherwise an old result can become a false production assumption.
