The best power bank is not the one with the largest number on its label. Compare three separate things: whether its output profile matches what your device can accept, whether its ports can supply your devices at the same time, and how many watt-hours it actually delivers under a realistic load.

Use the manufacturer’s USB-C Power Delivery profiles and shared-output table for compatibility, convert capacity to watt-hours (Wh) before comparing models, and treat independent load-test results as model- and test-specific evidence rather than a promise for every power bank.

Start with the three comparisons that matter

1. Charging speed: the bank and device must agree

A power bank’s maximum wattage is a ceiling. The actual rate is negotiated among the bank, the device, the cable, the selected port and the device’s battery state. A 100-watt port will not force a phone that accepts 27 watts to charge at 100 watts, and a laptop may charge below its advertised maximum when its battery is nearly full or the system is running heavily.

Read the bank’s output profiles, not just its headline wattage. A profile such as 5 V/3 A, 9 V/3 A, 15 V/3 A or 20 V/5 A tells you which voltage-and-current combinations the port can negotiate. USB Implementers Forum publishes the Power Delivery specifications and compliance material in its USB Power Delivery document library. 2. Ports: count connectors and available power separately

Four connectors do not mean four devices can each receive the maximum output. Banks commonly reduce or redistribute power when a second or third port is active. Compare USB-C and USB-A counts, the maximum of each individual port, the input/recharge port, and the total output with two or more ports in use.

3. Real-world capacity: compare delivered Wh

Milliamp-hours (mAh) describe charge at a stated voltage. Watt-hours combine charge and voltage, so they are the useful common unit when models use different rated cell voltages. Delivered energy is lower than the cell rating because the bank converts cell voltage to USB output and because efficiency changes with load and output path.

How to judge charging speed for your device

Find the device’s accepted input

Check the device maker’s specification, charger label or manual for its maximum input. For a phone, the figure may be expressed in watts; for a USB-C laptop it may be 45 W, 65 W, 90 W or another value. If the device lists voltage and current instead, multiply volts by amps to estimate watts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match that requirement to a bank profile

Choose a port that supports the device’s charging protocol and a wattage at or above the device’s requirement. USB-C Power Delivery is the usual standard for modern phones, tablets and laptops, but a matching connector alone does not prove that the necessary profile is available.

  • Phone or tablet: prioritize the USB-C profiles your device accepts and a cable rated for the negotiated current.
  • Laptop: verify the bank’s single-port output, not merely its combined total. A bank advertised as 165 W total may provide substantially less from one port than the total suggests.
  • Low-power accessories: check whether the bank has a low-current or trickle mode if the accessory repeatedly disconnects at a very small draw.

Account for conditions that reduce the rate

Charging speed can fall when the bank is hot, its own battery is low, the device is in use, or the battery-management system tapers current near full charge. A cable that lacks the required electronic rating can also limit a high-power USB-C connection. Therefore, “supports 100 W” means the port can offer that ceiling under supported conditions; it does not guarantee 100 W throughout a charging session.

How to compare ports and simultaneous charging

Read the allocation table for the exact model

As a teaching example, the manufacturer specification for the Anker Power Bank 25K 165W Built-In and Retractable Cables lists three USB-C ports and one USB-A port, up to 100 W from a USB-C port and up to 165 W total. Its separate power-distribution guidance explains that the allocation changes according to which ports are active and the battery state. The exact combination you need matters more than the 165 W headline.

Port question What to record Why it matters
How many USB-C ports? Number and each port’s maximum profile Determines how many modern high-power devices can connect directly.
How many USB-A ports? Number and maximum current or wattage Useful for legacy cables and accessories, but often lower power than USB-C.
What happens with two ports active? The maker’s shared-output allocation Reveals whether a laptop port is throttled when a phone is added.
What is the total output? Combined ceiling and conditions Shows the limit for all devices together, not the output of one port.
Which port recharges the bank? Input connector, voltage/current and input wattage Sets how quickly the bank itself can be refilled.

If a specification omits a combination, treat it as unknown rather than assuming every port can run at its individual maximum simultaneously.

Plan for your actual device mix

  • Laptop plus phone: look for an allocation that leaves enough power on one USB-C port for the laptop after the phone is connected.
  • Several phones: port count and the combined limit usually matter more than extreme single-port wattage.
  • USB-A accessories plus USB-C devices: confirm that activating USB-A does not reduce the USB-C port below your laptop’s requirement.

Convert mAh to Wh before comparing capacity

The calculation

Use the rated cell voltage supplied by the manufacturer:

Wh = (mAh ÷ 1,000) × rated voltage

The Federal Aviation Administration explains this relationship on its Airline Passengers and Batteries page. Do not substitute 5 V, 9 V or another USB output voltage for the cell voltage used in the capacity rating.

Worked example

The Anker 25K 165W specification lists 25,000 mAh at 3.6 V and 90 Wh. The arithmetic is 25,000 ÷ 1,000 × 3.6 = 90 Wh. That 90 Wh is stored-cell energy; it is not a promise that 90 Wh will arrive at a phone or laptop.

Why equal mAh labels can conceal different energy

A 20,000 mAh bank rated at 3.6 V stores about 72 Wh, while the same mAh at a different rated voltage represents a different amount of energy. Wh puts the models on the same basis. If a listing gives mAh but not the voltage used for that rating, ask the manufacturer or mark the comparison as incomplete.

Use delivered-energy tests, not just the label

What a published test can tell you

Independent tests discharge a bank through a defined load and output path. Their result includes conversion losses, cable and meter losses, protection behavior and the reviewer’s chosen procedure. It is valuable evidence for that model, but it is not a universal efficiency rating.

TechRadar’s 2026 load-test table for the Anker 737 Power Bank (PowerCore 24K) reports these results:

Test output Reported delivered energy Reported share of rated energy
20 W 75.3 Wh 87%
100 W 77.1 Wh 89%
140 W 73.1 Wh 85%
USB-A at 10 W 70.5 Wh 81.5%
USB-C at 10 W 74.2 Wh 86%

These are the review’s results for that product and setup. They show why output path and load belong in a comparison: the same bank produced different delivered Wh at 20 W, 100 W, 140 W and at 10 W through USB-A versus USB-C. They do not establish an average loss for all power banks.

A step-by-step method for comparing any shortlist

  1. List every device you intend to charge. Write down each device’s maximum accepted wattage and whether it requires USB-C Power Delivery or another mode.
  2. Check single-port profiles. Confirm that at least one port supplies the required voltage/current combination at the needed wattage.
  3. Map simultaneous use. Open the exact model’s power-allocation table and record the output when your intended two- and three-device combinations are active.
  4. Normalize capacity. Convert every mAh label to Wh using the manufacturer’s rated cell voltage. Prefer a stated Wh figure when available.
  5. Separate ratings from tests. Put manufacturer-rated Wh and independently measured delivered Wh in different columns, including the test load, output port and method.
  6. Check recharge time. Compare the bank’s input wattage with the charger you already own. A high-output bank can still recharge slowly if its input limit is low.
  7. Apply physical constraints. Add dimensions, weight, built-in cable arrangements and the number of loose cables you must carry.
  8. Apply travel rules if relevant. Use the printed Wh rating and verify the current airline policy before purchasing for a trip.

How to interpret capacity for real use

Estimate device top-ups conservatively

Start with the bank’s rated Wh, then expect delivered energy to vary by load and port. A phone’s battery label is also expressed at a cell voltage and cannot be compared directly with the bank’s USB-output mAh. The practical number is how many watt-hours reach the device under the charging mode you will use.

Why low-power and high-power tests differ

Power-conversion circuits have operating ranges. A 10 W USB-A load can produce a different result from a 10 W USB-C load, as the TechRadar figures demonstrate, and a 140 W load can differ from a 20 W load on the same unit. Device negotiation, thermal limits and automatic shutoff also influence the result.

If you measure a bank yourself

A USB-C power meter and a controlled electronic load can measure voltage, current and accumulated Wh. Test one output path at a time, document the load, and repeat at the same starting and stopping conditions. Such a measurement describes your setup; it does not replace a controlled independent review.

Travel, airline limits and safety

United States passenger-baggage rules

FAA guidance updated October 2, 2026 says spare power banks must be carried in carry-on baggage, not checked baggage. Under that guidance, units up to 100 Wh are generally allowed without airline approval. Units from 101 to 160 Wh require airline approval and are limited to two spare lithium-ion batteries per passenger. Batteries above 160 Wh are forbidden on passenger aircraft under the FAA guidance.

“Many airlines, both domestic and international, may have stricter quantity and Wh limits on how many spare batteries (including power banks and portable chargers) each passenger is allowed to travel with, regardless of Wh capacity.”

Check the current carrier policy before departure; the airline can impose stricter limits than the FAA baseline. For travel outside the United States, verify the local aviation authority and each carrier because the rules are not established by the U.S. guidance alone.

Inspect the physical condition

Do not carry a damaged, swollen or recalled battery that could spark or overheat unless it has been made safe according to the applicable authority’s instructions. Protect exposed terminals and prevent loose metal objects from contacting connectors.

Mistake: adding port wattages together

Fix: use the manufacturer’s combined-output figure for the exact ports you will use. Individual maxima are not automatically simultaneous.

Mistake: comparing mAh labels directly

Fix: convert to Wh with the rated cell voltage and keep rated energy separate from delivered energy.

Mistake: treating one review’s efficiency as a category average

Fix: preserve the reviewer’s load, port and method in the table. Use the result only for that model unless equivalent tests exist for the alternatives.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: ignoring the input rating

Fix: check how many watts the bank accepts while recharging. A bank that can output 100 W may accept substantially less input, extending turnaround time.

Mistake: assuming a travel-legal label guarantees boarding

Fix: read the current airline policy, carry the bank in the cabin and use the printed Wh rating when requesting approval.

A practical decision framework

  • For one phone: select a compact bank whose USB-C profile meets the phone’s maximum and whose Wh rating covers your required number of top-ups.
  • For a tablet and phone: prioritize a clear two-port allocation and enough combined output, rather than the highest single-port figure.
  • For a USB-C laptop: verify the single-port wattage, cable capability, input rating and the output available when another device is connected.
  • For several devices on trips: compare total Wh, connector mix, simultaneous allocations, weight and the 100 Wh travel threshold together.
  • For evidence-led buying: favor models with a published allocation table and independent delivered-Wh tests performed at loads close to your own use.

The defensible comparison is therefore a small data sheet, not a leaderboard: device acceptance, bank profiles, simultaneous allocation, rated Wh, tested delivered Wh, recharge input and travel constraints all belong in the decision.
