Compare oil marketing companies by their realized margins and the exposures that shape them—not by a headline crack spread alone. First define which businesses and regions you mean, then align reporting periods, units and accounting. From there, assess inventory effects, refinery performance, procurement and freight, hedging, working capital and balance-sheet strength.
What counts as an oil marketing company?
There is no single universal definition of “oil marketing company” in the company disclosures considered here. A peer set may include businesses with different combinations of refining, wholesale and retail marketing, trading, pipelines or petrochemicals. Some may also operate under government obligations or receive compensation that affects reported results.
Before comparing companies, define the geography, business activities and reporting boundaries you want to compare. A refiner with substantial retail operations is not directly comparable to a marketer with little or no refining unless you separate the relevant segments. Company disclosures from North America, Europe and India also reflect different market settings and reporting periods.
Why a crack spread is not a company’s realized margin
A crack spread is a market benchmark: it estimates the difference between market prices for refined products and crude oil. Marathon Petroleum describes it as an industry proxy for refining margin, not as the margin any particular refinery necessarily earns. Its reported refining and marketing margin accounts for product selling prices and costs such as crude, feedstocks, transportation and resale products; actual results also depend on company-specific operating and market conditions.

Use a crack spread or company-published indicator margin to understand the market backdrop, then compare it with the company’s reported realized margin. Check that the benchmark matches the refinery’s region, crude basket and product mix, and whether the company’s measure includes trading or other activities. Suncor and OMV disclosures illustrate why inventory accounting and operating context can also make reported margin differ from a market indicator.
How to make the comparison fair
- Define the peer group. Record each company’s geography, business mix and segment boundary. Separate refining results from marketing, retail, trading or other operations where the disclosures allow it.
- Align the periods and units. Use the same fiscal periods where possible, convert currencies consistently, and identify fiscal-year differences. Compare margins on the same stated basis, such as per barrel, rather than mixing units or periods.
- Read the margin definition. Note which revenues and costs are included, whether transportation, resale products or trading are counted, and whether the figure is a reported or adjusted measure. Similarly named measures are not automatically calculated alike.
- Separate reported and adjusted results. Show company-reported figures alongside any company-adjusted or current-cost measure. Explain what each adjustment does; do not treat non-GAAP or alternative performance measures as standardized across peers.
- Match the benchmark to the business. Choose a regional crack spread and crude differential suited to the company’s refinery locations, crude slate and product basket. A mismatched benchmark can make a sound operator look weak, or the reverse.
- Explain the gap. Compare benchmark movement with realized margin, then examine inventory valuation, refinery operations, product demand, procurement, freight, hedging and trading disclosures for possible contributors. Treat management explanations as the company’s account, not independent proof of cause.
How inventory accounting changes reported results
When crude and product prices move quickly, the accounting value assigned to inventory can affect reported margins and earnings. Under FIFO, costs from older inventory may flow through results before newer, higher-cost inventory; LIFO uses a different cost-flow assumption where permitted. Weighted-average or current-cost presentations can produce different views again. The timing and size of the effect depend on the company’s accounting and inventory position.

Suncor presents FIFO and LIFO margin views and reports an inventory valuation impact. OMV explains that historical inventory costs can distort reported performance in volatile markets. These examples show why a reader should identify the method and any inventory gain or loss rather than assuming reported margins are directly comparable.

Keep inventory valuation separate from operating performance when the filings provide enough detail. Also distinguish accounting gains or losses from cash realized: a reported valuation change is not automatically a cash inflow or outflow. If a company provides both reported and adjusted figures, retain both and state what the adjustment removes or adds.

What determines how much of a benchmark a company captures?
Crude slate and procurement
Refineries process different crude grades, and the price paid can differ from a headline crude benchmark. Compare crude quality, sourcing mix and relevant crude differentials, along with the company’s stated procurement exposure. IndianOil identifies sourcing diversity and refinery flexibility as mitigations in its risk disclosures; that is a company-described approach, not proof that exposure is eliminated.
Product yields and mix
Refineries produce different proportions of fuels and other products. The value of those yields depends on local product prices and demand, so a benchmark based on another product basket may not represent the company’s economics. Look for disclosed yields, product mix and market-specific effects before interpreting a margin gap.

Operations and maintenance
Throughput, utilization, availability and maintenance influence how much product a refinery can make and sell. A favorable benchmark may not translate into a strong realized result if a unit is offline, operating conditions limit output, or maintenance affects the period. Compare operating disclosures for the same period as the margin data.

Crude-price movements do not affect every company through the same channel or on the same timetable. Procurement costs, freight, product prices and resale exposure can move differently. IndianOil’s risk disclosure links crude prices and freight with procurement economics, refining margins and working capital, and describes sourcing diversity and refinery flexibility as mitigations.

Review derivatives and hedging disclosures, but do not assume that hedging removes economic risk. A hedge can change the timing or accounting presentation of gains and losses, and mark-to-market results are not necessarily cash-realized. Where the filings permit, distinguish operating margin from inventory valuation, derivative valuation and trading results.
Volatility can also increase the cash tied up in inventories or receivables, or change payment needs. Assess working capital alongside margins rather than assuming that a strong benchmark means the business has ample liquidity.
Compare resilience as well as margin
A margin is one part of the comparison, not a complete measure of a company’s ability to withstand volatile prices. Use consistent periods and definitions to examine cash generation, borrowings, interest coverage, inventory turnover, liquidity and capital spending. IndianOil reports measures including inventory turnover and working-capital ratios, but its figures should not be compared mechanically with another company’s differently defined ratios.

How to interpret the comparison
- Prefer a multi-period comparison over a ranking based on one quarter or one favorable benchmark reading.
- Use local crack spreads and crude differentials that fit the company’s locations and products.
- Show reported and adjusted measures separately, with the adjustment defined.
- Do not attribute every difference to management performance: accounting, crude quality, operations, demand, freight and business mix can all matter.
- State where the evidence is not comparable. Different fiscal years, currencies, segment boundaries and ratio definitions can prevent a defensible ranking.
