NVIDIA, Broadcom, and Microsoft give investors three different kinds of AI-infrastructure exposure. NVIDIA is the most direct merchant-accelerator and data-center-systems business; Broadcom combines custom AI accelerators with networking; Microsoft owns cloud capacity and monetizes it through Azure, subscriptions, and AI services. Compare them by stack position, revenue definitions, capital intensity, customer dependence, deployment constraints, and valuation—not by placing three unlike “AI revenue” figures in a league table. This is an analytical framework, not individualized financial advice.
The comparison in one view
The companies sit at different points in the infrastructure chain and recognize revenue differently. The figures below are company-reported and belong to different fiscal periods.
| Company | Place in the AI stack | Reported result | How it monetizes infrastructure | Disclosed execution issue |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA | Merchant accelerators, networking, and integrated data-center systems | Fiscal Q2 2027, quarter ended July 26, 2026: Data Center revenue of $89.0 billion; total revenue of $96.221 billion; year-over-year growth of 117% and 106%, respectively. | Sells GPUs, networking, and complete accelerated-computing platforms to customers and partners. | Land, power, data-center shells, capital, customer purchase timing, supply, and partner execution can delay buildouts. |
| Broadcom | Custom AI accelerators (XPUs) and AI networking | Fiscal Q2 2026, quarter ended May 3, 2026: AI semiconductor revenue of $10.8 billion, up 143% year over year. | Supplies custom silicon and networking solutions, often designed around large customers’ infrastructure requirements. | Customers need substantial capital to deploy systems; a financing platform for future XPU-based capacity adds execution and counterparty considerations. |
| Microsoft | Cloud capacity plus software and AI services | Fiscal Q3 2026: Azure and other cloud-services revenue grew 40% year over year. Fiscal Q4 2026 Microsoft Cloud revenue was $59.3 billion; fiscal-year revenue was $214.4 billion. | Charges for Azure consumption, software subscriptions, and AI-product and service usage. | Fiscal Q3 2026 capex was $31.9 billion, about two-thirds for short-lived assets, primarily GPUs and CPUs. Fiscal Q4 capex was $41 billion. AI investment and usage reduced Microsoft Cloud gross-margin percentage. |
These numbers are not equivalent denominators. NVIDIA Data Center includes compute and networking and is not a pure AI-revenue measure. Broadcom’s AI semiconductor figure is a narrower company-defined category. Microsoft reports a broad cloud business in which AI infrastructure is an input rather than a separately reported segment.

Before comparing growth rates, write the period beside every number. NVIDIA’s fiscal Q2 2027 quarter ended July 26, 2026. Broadcom’s fiscal Q2 2026 quarter ended May 3, 2026. Microsoft’s cited figures are for fiscal Q3 and Q4 2026 and the full fiscal year. The reporting cutoffs are not contemporaneous, so a percentage comparison can mix different demand conditions, product ramps, and customer-delivery schedules.

Use the company’s own label in notes and spreadsheets. A practical header is company | fiscal period | quarter end | metric definition | amount | growth rate. Do not rename a segment “AI revenue” merely because AI demand contributes to it.
NVIDIA: the most direct merchant-accelerator exposure
What the business represents
NVIDIA sells merchant GPUs, networking, systems, and software-enabled platforms used to build accelerated data centers. That gives shareholders the clearest sensitivity to spending on broadly available accelerator infrastructure rather than to one cloud operator’s utilization or software pricing. Its Data Center segment includes compute and networking, so it captures more than AI accelerators alone.
What the latest reported figures say
In NVIDIA’s fiscal Q2 2027 filing for the quarter ended July 26, 2026, Data Center revenue was $89.0 billion, up 117% year over year. Total revenue was $96.221 billion, up 106%. The filing describes demand for Blackwell Ultra infrastructure. Those are company-reported segment and company totals, not an independently measured AI-only market.
How to analyze monetization
- Product scope: Separate accelerator, networking, and complete-system sales when evaluating mix; the reported Data Center total combines these activities.
- Demand timing: Shipments can precede the completion and productive use of a customer’s data center. A strong order environment does not by itself prove sustained end-user utilization.
- Platform value: Systems and software can increase switching costs and attach opportunities, but the investment case still depends on customers continuing to fund and deploy new capacity.
Capital and deployment risks
NVIDIA’s filing says that “the availability of land, power, shell, and capital is crucial” to building a full data center using its infrastructure. It warns that shortages of those resources could affect future revenue and financial performance. The same disclosure discusses customer purchase timing, supply and capacity commitments, and the possibility that partners cannot complete projects or meet financial commitments.
Read those statements as dependencies, not predictions that a named project will fail. A capacity commitment is also not identical to a firm end-customer order or realized sale. In a model, test the delay between a customer commitment, NVIDIA shipment, data-center commissioning, and revenue-producing workloads.

Investor checks for NVIDIA
- Track Data Center growth while keeping its compute-and-networking definition intact.
- Test how much revenue depends on a small group of large customers or partners, using the filing’s concentration and commitment disclosures.
- Stress scenarios for power, permitting, shell availability, supply, and customer financing.
- Examine whether cash conversion remains strong after inventory, supply commitments, and ecosystem investments rather than treating revenue growth as free cash flow.
Broadcom: custom silicon and networking exposure
What the business represents
Broadcom’s AI position is centered on custom accelerators—often called XPUs—and networking components used to connect and scale AI clusters. Custom silicon can give a customer a design tailored to its workload and cost objectives, while networking determines how effectively many accelerators operate together. This is a different exposure from selling a broadly standardized merchant GPU platform.
What the latest reported figures say
Broadcom reported $10.8 billion of AI semiconductor revenue in fiscal Q2 2026, the quarter ended May 3, 2026, up 143% from the prior year. Chief executive Hock Tan attributed the growth to custom AI accelerators and AI networking. Because Broadcom’s category and NVIDIA’s Data Center segment have different scope, the dollar amounts and growth rates should not be ranked as if they measured the same market.
Recommended Free Tools
How custom-silicon economics differ
- Customer-specific design: Revenue and product road maps can be tied to a few large infrastructure operators and their internal accelerator plans.
- Networking content: AI clusters require high-speed connectivity, so networking can benefit even when a customer changes accelerator suppliers.
- Program timing: Custom projects involve design, validation, manufacturing, and customer deployment milestones. A delayed program can move revenue between quarters.
Financing and deployment risk
Broadcom says customers need significant capital to deploy AI infrastructure and describes an AI XPV financing platform intended to facilitate future compute capacity using custom accelerators and networking. Financing may help customers bring projects online, but it also creates questions about utilization, repayment, counterparty quality, and who ultimately bears construction and operating risk.
Do not count planned financed capacity as revenue already earned. In a forecast, distinguish signed design commitments, production shipments, financed capacity, and billable customer usage. Each stage has a different probability of becoming cash generation.
Investor checks for Broadcom
- Separate the reported AI semiconductor category from the rest of semiconductor and infrastructure-software activities.
- Review customer concentration, program commitments, credit exposure, and financing terms.
- Model the effect of custom-program wins and losses on several years of revenue rather than assuming every design win becomes a permanent franchise.
- Test whether networking demand remains durable if customers alter accelerator architectures or build schedules.
Microsoft: cloud capacity converted into recurring services
What the business represents
Microsoft is not a standalone AI-chip company. It buys and operates data-center capacity, then sells Azure consumption, software subscriptions, and AI services. Its return on AI infrastructure depends on both the cost and availability of compute and Microsoft’s ability to fill that capacity with paying workloads at acceptable margins.

Reported growth and cloud scale
Microsoft’s fiscal Q3 2026 Intelligent Cloud results showed Azure and other cloud-services revenue growth of 40% year over year. Microsoft reported Microsoft Cloud revenue of $59.3 billion for fiscal Q4 2026 and $214.4 billion for fiscal 2026. Those cloud totals include a broad set of services; they should not be presented as AI-only revenue.
Microsoft chairman and CEO Satya Nadella said the company was “focused on delivering cloud and AI infrastructure and solutions that empower every business to eval-max their outcomes in the agentic computing era.” The statement describes the strategic direction, not a separate financial measure.
Capital intensity and margin pressure
Microsoft reported $31.9 billion of capital expenditures in fiscal Q3 2026, with roughly two-thirds for short-lived assets, primarily GPUs and CPUs. Its fiscal Q4 2026 call reported $41 billion of capex and a similar short-lived-asset mix. Short-lived assets require faster replacement or depreciation than buildings and other long-lived infrastructure, which affects cash needs, depreciation, and reported margins.
Microsoft said continued AI-infrastructure investment and increasing AI-product use reduced Microsoft Cloud gross-margin percentage, partly offset by efficiency gains. This is a crucial distinction: AI usage can increase revenue and still pressure margins while the company adds capacity, absorbs depreciation, or pays for third-party components.
Supplier diversification and operating leverage
Microsoft uses first-party silicon alongside systems from NVIDIA and AMD. Internal designs can reduce dependence on any single supplier and allow workload-specific optimization, but they also require engineering, validation, and deployment spending. The investment case therefore combines infrastructure utilization, software attach rates, pricing, and operating efficiency.

Investor checks for Microsoft
- Separate Azure growth from company-wide revenue and from AI-specific usage, which Microsoft does not report as a standalone segment in the cited figures.
- Follow capex, depreciation, leases, and capacity commitments together; capex is an investment outlay, not immediate AI revenue.
- Watch cloud gross-margin percentage as AI workloads scale and as short-lived GPU and CPU assets turn over.
- Assess whether software and service revenue can keep rising faster than the cost of the capacity required to deliver it.
Compare the businesses on the same five questions
1. What exactly is being sold?
| Question | NVIDIA | Broadcom | Microsoft |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary offering | Merchant accelerators, networking, and integrated systems | Custom accelerators and AI networking | Cloud infrastructure, software, and AI services |
| Revenue trigger | Shipment and delivery of products or systems | Custom-program production and networking shipments | Customer consumption, subscriptions, and service usage |
| AI metric cited | Data Center revenue, which includes compute and networking | AI semiconductor revenue, defined by Broadcom | Azure and cloud-services growth plus total Microsoft Cloud revenue |
This first question prevents the most common analytical error: treating a component supplier’s sales, a system supplier’s segment, and a cloud operator’s consumption revenue as interchangeable.
2. Where does the margin risk appear?
- NVIDIA: Product mix, supply commitments, inventory, and customer or partner delays can affect gross profit and cash conversion.
- Broadcom: Custom-program concentration, manufacturing execution, networking mix, and financing or counterparty exposure matter alongside semiconductor margins.
- Microsoft: Cloud gross-margin percentage can be pressured by AI infrastructure investment and rapidly increasing usage before utilization and pricing mature.
3. How much capital must be deployed?
Do not compare only company capex lines. NVIDIA and Broadcom can rely on customers and partners to fund data-center construction, but their revenue depends on those parties obtaining land, power, financing, equipment, and permits. Microsoft funds a large part of the capacity directly and reported $31.9 billion of fiscal Q3 2026 capex and $41 billion in fiscal Q4. For each company, map capital spending, leases, supply commitments, depreciation life, and the time required to reach productive utilization.
4. Who carries concentration risk?
Review filings for large-customer dependence, purchase commitments, credit exposure, and partner obligations. NVIDIA and Broadcom explicitly describe customer deployment and financing dependencies. Microsoft’s broader cloud and software portfolio can diversify revenue, but it remains exposed to a limited set of major suppliers, its own capacity decisions, and the ability of customers to pay for new AI workloads.
5. What can stop a profitable deployment?
- Insufficient grid power, cooling, land, or data-center shells
- Permitting and construction delays
- Accelerator, networking, or memory supply constraints
- Customer financing shortfalls or project cancellations
- Low workload utilization after capacity is installed
- Depreciation and replacement costs rising faster than service pricing
A disciplined valuation framework
No current market price, valuation multiple, discounted-cash-flow estimate, or expected-return winner is established by the operating figures above. A useful comparison requires a separately dated valuation snapshot.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Choose an as-of date. Record closing share price, diluted shares, debt, cash, and the latest available fiscal statements for all three companies on that date.
- Use comparable denominators. Calculate enterprise value to trailing and forward revenue, operating income, and free cash flow. Label whether the denominator is a quarter, a fiscal year, or a forward estimate.
- Normalize the fiscal calendars. Do not pair NVIDIA’s July 26, 2026 quarter with Broadcom’s May 3, 2026 quarter as though they ended together. Build a trailing-period view or clearly show the different cutoffs.
- Preserve segment definitions. Keep NVIDIA Data Center, Broadcom AI semiconductor revenue, and Microsoft Azure or Microsoft Cloud in separate rows. Add company-wide results before drawing a valuation conclusion.
- Model capital intensity. Forecast capex, depreciation, leases, working capital, supply commitments, and the utilization ramp. For Microsoft, vary the proportion of short-lived GPU and CPU assets; for NVIDIA and Broadcom, vary customer-funded buildout and shipment timing.
- Run concentration and delay scenarios. Test the loss or postponement of a major customer program, a power delay, lower cluster utilization, and a financing or counterparty problem.
- Compare returns on invested capital. Ask whether incremental operating profit exceeds the capital required to support it, rather than assuming the fastest revenue growth produces the highest shareholder return.
A high-growth company can be an unattractive investment at an excessive price, while a slower-growing company can be attractive if its cash generation and valuation compensate for execution risk. Operating momentum alone cannot settle that question.

How to match the exposure to an investment thesis
| If the thesis emphasizes | The relevant exposure | What must be validated |
|---|---|---|
| Broad demand for merchant accelerated computing and integrated systems | NVIDIA | Whether customer power, capital, and construction capacity convert demand into completed deployments and sustained shipments |
| Customer-specific silicon and high-speed AI interconnects | Broadcom | Whether custom programs, networking demand, and financing arrangements produce durable cash flow without excessive concentration |
| Recurring cloud consumption, software subscriptions, and AI-service monetization | Microsoft | Whether Azure growth and software economics offset capex, depreciation, and margin pressure as AI usage scales |
This mapping describes business exposure, not a recommendation. An investor can prefer one exposure while still rejecting its current valuation or risk-adjusted return.
Risks that deserve a separate line in every model
Non-comparable “AI revenue” labels
Segment names and definitions are accounting and management-reporting choices. A larger dollar figure does not prove greater AI exposure, and a higher growth rate does not prove better economics. Keep scope, period, and inclusion rules beside every metric.
Power and physical buildout
Accelerators create value only when installed in a powered, cooled, networked, permitted facility. Land, shells, electricity, and financing can become bottlenecks even when chip demand is strong.
Customer monetization
Hyperscalers and enterprises must sell applications or compute time that covers the cost of the equipment. If AI workloads are delayed, uneconomic, or less intensive than planned, suppliers can face order changes and cloud operators can face underutilized assets.
Supply and replacement cycles
Short-lived GPUs and CPUs can require rapid refreshes. A refresh cycle may support future supplier revenue but also raises the cloud operator’s cash requirements and depreciation expense. Conversely, a longer useful life can reduce near-term replacement demand.
Financing and counterparty exposure
Customer-funded or financed deployments can accelerate capacity additions, but they introduce credit, repayment, and project-completion risk. Treat financing capacity as an enabler with obligations, not as proof of earned revenue.
Bottom line for the comparison
Use NVIDIA when you want to analyze merchant accelerator and system demand; use Broadcom when the thesis centers on custom silicon and networking; use Microsoft when the thesis depends on cloud utilization and software-service monetization. The correct comparison is a stack-by-stack assessment of reported growth, capital returns, concentration, deployment constraints, and a separately dated valuation—not a contest between three headline AI numbers.
