The safest way to compare Nintendo Switch editions is to ignore labels such as “Deluxe” or “Collector’s” until you have itemized what is included. Check whether the listing contains the complete game or only an upgrade, separate downloadable content from physical collectibles, record the territory and format, and verify the exact preorder bonus and deadline. Nintendo’s eShop preorder rules apply only to eligible digital listings; a retailer’s physical preorder follows its own terms.
What the edition label does—and does not—tell you
“Standard,” “Deluxe,” and “Collector’s” are marketing labels rather than a universal Nintendo Switch specification. One publisher may use “Deluxe” for a bundle that includes the game, while another may use it for downloadable content that requires a separately purchased Standard Edition. A “Collector’s Edition” may be a physical package with memorabilia, but the name alone does not prove which items are inside.
Begin with the product description and divide every inclusion into four categories:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Game access: the complete game, a game card, a digital license, downloadable content only, or an upgrade that requires another edition.
- Digital content: story expansions, a season pass, missions, costumes, weapons, currency, soundtracks, or other explicitly named downloads.
- Physical contents: a steelbook, art book, figure, map, poster, pin, packaging, or other listed object.
- Purchase conditions: a base-game prerequisite, territory restriction, seller limitation, preorder deadline, code-redemption deadline, or platform requirement.
If a page does not state an item, record it as “not stated” rather than inferring it from the edition name or from another country’s listing.

The comparison worksheet to use for any game
Copy the current Standard, Deluxe, Collector’s, and any upgrade listings into one worksheet. Use the same fields for every option so that a low-priced upgrade cannot appear cheaper simply because its required base game is shown on another page.
| Comparison axis | What to record |
|---|---|
| Total price | The current price in your currency, plus any separately required base game and any listed delivery or other mandatory charge. |
| Game access | Whether the product is the full game, DLC, an upgrade, or a bundle. State whether a Standard Edition is required. |
| Digital content | Every named expansion, pass, mission, cosmetic item, currency pack, soundtrack, or other download. |
| Physical extras | Every named collectible and whether it is supplied in the box, as a separate shipment, or through a code. |
| Preorder bonus | The exact item, qualifying edition, qualifying seller, territory, and final purchase date. |
| Format and territory | Physical or digital, Nintendo eShop country or store region, and Nintendo Switch compatibility shown by the listing. |
| Availability and risk | Current stock or preorder status, cancellation terms, delivery timing, and how and when a bonus code can be redeemed. |
Save a copy or screenshot of the listing when you order. Contents, price, stock, and bonus language can change, and a later product page may no longer show the wording that applied to your purchase.
How to compare the total cost
For a complete edition, compare the listed price directly with the Standard Edition. For an upgrade, calculate the real cost as:
Real cost = required Standard Edition + upgrade price + any mandatory listed charges.
Then calculate the premium over the Standard Edition. Do not assign a universal monetary value to a figure, art book, cosmetic item, or expansion; decide whether that particular extra matters to you. A buyer who wants only the story expansion may prefer an upgrade, while someone who collects boxed merchandise may accept a higher premium for physical items.
Use separate lines for recurring or optional purchases. A season pass may unlock future content, whereas a cosmetic pack may be a one-time item. If the listing does not state whether an item is delivered as a code or included on the game card, mark that detail for confirmation rather than assuming it.

Step-by-step method for comparing editions
- Choose the exact game and territory. Start with the Nintendo eShop country or the country shown on the physical-store page. Do not mix a United States physical listing with an Australian digital listing and treat them as equivalent.
- Collect every relevant listing. Open the Standard, Deluxe, Collector’s, bundle, and upgrade pages from the publisher, Nintendo storefront, and intended seller. Record the page’s date, format, and platform.
- Identify what you are buying. Write “full game,” “DLC only,” “upgrade,” or “bundle” in the Game access field. If an upgrade requires Standard, put that requirement beside the price rather than in a footnote.
- Transcribe the contents. Copy each named digital and physical item into separate lists. Do not convert a vague phrase such as “bonus items” into a detailed list that the page does not provide.
- Check the preorder offer. Record the exact bonus, the qualifying product, the seller, the territory, and the deadline. A bonus tied to one seller is not automatically included by another seller.
- Calculate the complete cost. Add a required base game to an upgrade and include any mandatory listed charge. Compare the resulting total with the complete-game edition.
- Check timing and cancellation. For an eShop preorder, determine when payment is taken and when cancellation stops being available. For a physical preorder, read the seller’s separate cancellation and delivery terms.
- Verify immediately before ordering. Recheck price, stock, contents, bonus eligibility, and redemption instructions on the live page. If one of those fields is absent, contact the seller or publisher before paying.
Understanding Nintendo eShop preorders
Nintendo Support says only selected games and downloadable content can be preordered on Nintendo eShop. Its rules therefore do not automatically apply to every Switch title or to a physical preorder from a retailer.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePayment and preload timing
For an eligible eShop preorder, payment is processed no sooner than seven days before the release date. After payment is processed, the game is preloaded to the console. Preloading is not early access: the title cannot be played before its release date. At release, a small update must be downloaded before play begins.
Cancellation window
Nintendo says an eShop preorder can be canceled before payment is processed. Once the payment-processing point has passed, that specific preorder cancellation window closes. If you are still comparing editions, cancel before that point rather than assuming you can change the order later.
What a digital bonus code means
When an eligible eShop game offers a bonus download code, Nintendo states that the code is not available at the moment the preorder is placed. It becomes available after payment is processed and the game is preloaded. Check the title-specific redemption instructions and deadline; the general eShop timing does not establish a universal code-expiration date.
Nintendo describes such offers cautiously: “Occasionally, a game may offer bonus content for those who purchase it before release.” That wording means a bonus is an offer attached to a particular listing, not a guaranteed feature of every preorder or every edition.
Preorder bonuses and “exclusive” claims
Use “exclusive” only after identifying what the exclusivity refers to. A bonus may be exclusive to:

- a particular retailer;
- the Nintendo eShop rather than physical purchases;
- one country or storefront;
- a specific edition or bundle;
- orders placed before a stated date; or
- a limited stock allocation.
These are different conditions. A retailer-exclusive art print is not the same as an eShop-exclusive costume, and neither is necessarily exclusive to the Collector’s Edition. Write the qualifying purchase in full, for example: “Digital costume code with the Australia eShop Deluxe listing, if the current page states it,” rather than “preorder bonus included.”
Questions to answer before paying
- What is the exact bonus item?
- Is it physical, printed inside the box, or supplied as a digital code?
- Which edition qualifies?
- Which seller or storefront qualifies?
- Does the offer apply in your country?
- What is the order deadline, and is it based on local time?
- When is the code delivered?
- Is there a separate redemption deadline?
- Can the seller substitute the bonus if stock runs out?
If the listing answers only some of these questions, describe the offer as partially specified and confirm the missing terms before ordering.
Physical Collector’s Editions: what to verify
A physical Collector’s Edition is a real product path on Nintendo Switch. Nintendo’s US Store, for example, lists a physical The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Collector’s Edition with a release date of May 12, 2023. That listing demonstrates the format; it does not establish that the edition remains in stock or that the same contents and availability apply in another territory today.
For a physical package, inspect the current itemized contents rather than relying on photographs or the word “Collector’s.” Confirm whether the game is supplied on a card, as a download code, or through another arrangement; whether collectibles ship with the game or separately; and whether a preorder item is inside the box or issued by the seller. A product image can show packaging that is not included, so the written contents list has priority.
Physical-order risks
- Stock risk: a preorder page can close or change to “sold out.” Do not describe a past listing as currently available.
- Delivery risk: release-day arrival is not guaranteed unless the seller states it.
- Regional compatibility: packaging, included codes, and downloadable content may be limited to the selling territory.
- Bonus substitution: a seller may separate a bonus from the game shipment or limit it to remaining stock.
- Duplicate content: a physical package can include a code for content you already own digitally; compare the item list with your existing purchases.
Digital upgrades are not automatically standalone games
Nintendo’s Australia eShop listing for LEVEL5’s MEGATON MUSASHI W: WIRED describes a Deluxe Edition upgrade with additional content and explicitly says that the Standard Edition is required. This is the pattern to look for whenever a listing uses the word “upgrade.”
An upgrade can be the right purchase for someone who already owns Standard, but it is not a cheaper substitute for the complete game. Put the required edition in the same row as the upgrade price and check whether the base game is owned on the same Nintendo account and platform. If the listing does not state whether the upgrade is compatible with a physical or digital copy, seek confirmation before purchase.

Upgrade checklist
- Is the Standard Edition required?
- Does the requirement apply to physical, digital, or both versions?
- Does the upgrade contain gameplay content, cosmetic content, or both?
- Is the upgrade tied to the same territory as the base game?
- Will the listing charge you for content already included in another bundle?
Territory, storefront, and format differences
Edition names and preorder terms do not reliably transfer between countries. The cited Collector’s Edition example is a US Nintendo Store physical listing, while the Deluxe upgrade example is an Australian Nintendo eShop listing. They establish different product paths in different storefronts; neither proves what a store in another territory sells.
Before comparing prices or bonuses, write the territory in the heading of your worksheet. Check the currency, tax treatment shown at checkout, language information, code-redeeming region, release date, and whether downloadable content is sold in the same storefront as the base game. A physical game imported from another territory may work on a Switch, yet a bonus code or DLC entitlement can still be restricted by account region.
Like-for-like comparison rule
Compare physical with physical and digital with digital before comparing a hybrid package. A physical Collector’s Edition with memorabilia should not be judged solely against a digital Deluxe upgrade; first compare each with the Standard Edition in its own format, then decide whether the physical items justify the difference.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Worked comparison of the two official examples
| Edition or listing | Territory and format | Game access | Extras stated | Requirements or date | Price and availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Collector’s Edition | Nintendo US Store; physical Nintendo Switch product | The cited description establishes a physical Collector’s Edition, but the available material here does not itemize whether every game component is on a card or supplied by code. | Physical Collector’s Edition contents must be checked on the live listing; no complete item list is established here. | Listed release date: May 12, 2023. | Current price and stock are not established; verify the live US Store page. |
| MEGATON MUSASHI W: WIRED Deluxe Edition upgrade | Nintendo eShop Australia; digital listing attributed to LEVEL5 | Upgrade product, not a standalone Standard Edition purchase. | Additional content is stated; the cited description does not itemize every individual extra. | Standard Edition required. | Current price and availability are not established; verify the Australian eShop listing. |
The correct conclusion from these examples is methodological: one is a physical Collector’s Edition listing and the other is a digital upgrade. Their labels cannot be used as a cross-title definition of what “Collector’s” or “Deluxe” always includes.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
Buying an upgrade without owning the base game
Symptom: the checkout total looks unusually low and the description says “upgrade.” Fix: add the required Standard Edition to the worksheet and confirm that your existing copy meets the stated requirement.

Expecting a code immediately after an eShop preorder
Symptom: no bonus code appears when the order is placed. Fix: for an eligible eShop offer, wait until payment is processed and preload occurs, then follow the title-specific delivery and redemption instructions.
Applying eShop cancellation rules to a physical order
Symptom: you assume a retailer preorder can be canceled until seven days before release. Fix: the seven-day payment rule belongs to eligible Nintendo eShop preorders; read the physical seller’s own cancellation terms.
Mixing regions
Symptom: a bonus or DLC appears on a foreign storefront but not yours. Fix: compare listings within the same country and account region, and verify code compatibility before importing a game.

Symptom: promotional artwork shows a figure or steelbook absent from the written description. Fix: count only explicitly listed contents and ask the seller to clarify ambiguous images.
A final buying checklist
- Country or storefront is written down.
- Format is identified as physical or digital.
- Product is marked full game, DLC, upgrade, or bundle.
- Any required Standard Edition is included in the cost calculation.
- Digital and physical extras are listed separately.
- Preorder bonus, qualifying seller, territory, and deadline are explicit.
- Code delivery and redemption terms are understood.
- eShop payment, preload, release, and cancellation timing are understood where applicable.
- Current price and stock were checked on the live listing.
- Imported codes and DLC have been checked for account-region compatibility.
This process produces a meaningful comparison even when editions use confusing names: you can see exactly what access you receive, what extras you value, what conditions apply, and what risks remain before placing the order.
