Compare memory stocks on the same date and accounting basis, then test three things separately: what the market is paying, how much qualified product each company can actually deliver, and how durable customer demand may be. Use current-cycle and normalized valuation together; separate producing capacity from future projects; and compare bit shipments with average selling prices, product mix, contracts, and inventory signals. This method can reveal why a low headline earnings multiple may simply reflect peak memory prices. The available company disclosures do not include matched share prices, market capitalizations, or valuation multiples, so they cannot identify the cheapest stock or support a security recommendation.
The comparison framework
A useful memory-stock comparison keeps valuation, capacity, demand quality, profit durability, and shareholder exposure as distinct axes. A company can lead on one and lag on another: exceptional current margins may coincide with a late-cycle price peak, while a large capacity plan may not produce sellable bits for several years.

Step 1: Normalize valuation before comparing companies
Use one measurement date
Record the closing share price, diluted share count, cash, debt, minority interests where relevant, and the latest financial statements on the same date for every issuer. Do not compare one company using a current quote with another using a quarter-old market value. Convert currencies consistently and label whether figures use U.S. GAAP, K-IFRS, or another accounting basis.

Calculate equity value and enterprise value separately
Equity value is the share price multiplied by diluted shares outstanding. Enterprise value (EV) starts with equity value and adds debt and other debt-like claims, then subtracts cash and cash equivalents. The precise bridge should be documented because leases, investments, pension obligations, and minority interests can differ by accounting treatment.

Use the same denominator convention throughout the worksheet:
- Current P/E: equity value divided by the latest reported or forward earnings figure.
- Current EV/EBIT: EV divided by operating income.
- Current EV/EBITDA: EV divided by EBITDA, with a clear definition of adjustments.
- Price-to-free-cash-flow: equity value divided by free cash flow after capital spending.
- Normalized multiples: the same ratios calculated with a mid-cycle earnings or free-cash-flow estimate rather than a peak or trough quarter.
Build a normalized earnings case
Memory-company earnings are unusually sensitive to selling prices, bit shipments, product mix, utilization, and yield. A normalized case should state its assumptions instead of treating the latest margin as permanent. At minimum, model a conservative, base, and favorable case for ASPs, bit growth, gross margin, operating expenses, capital spending, and working capital.
For example, calculate revenue as bits shipped multiplied by ASP, then vary each driver independently. Apply a mid-cycle gross margin rather than the latest quarter’s margin, and deduct the capital spending needed to maintain and expand the business. Use a multi-year average or a through-cycle margin only when the period and exclusions are disclosed. A single peak quarter is not a normalized denominator.

Two companies with identical P/E ratios can have very different shareholder risk if one carries net cash and the other is funding a large fab and packaging program with debt. Track diluted shares, employee equity, convertibles, buybacks, and any depositary-share ratio. Compare free cash flow after capital expenditure, not merely accounting earnings, because memory manufacturing requires heavy, recurring investment.
No matched market prices, market capitalizations, or valuation multiples are established in the available disclosures. Therefore, the correct output of this process is a reproducible spreadsheet and scenario range, not a claim that one named stock is cheapest.
Step 2: Measure capacity as a time-phased pipeline

- Installed and producing: equipment is installed and making product.
- Qualified output: customers have qualified the process and the company can deliver saleable parts at stated yields.
- Ramping: production is increasing, but yield, throughput, or customer qualification may still limit shipments.
- Announced or planned: a cleanroom, line, or project has been disclosed but is not current supply.
Do not add announced wafers to current output. Record the expected commissioning and ramp dates, the product targeted, and the assumptions that could delay the schedule.
Track DRAM and NAND independently
DRAM and NAND have different architectures, product cycles, pricing patterns, and bottlenecks. Maintain separate rows for wafer starts, bits shipped, ASP, process node, and product mix. A company can gain NAND bits while losing DRAM share, or increase nominal wafers without a proportional increase in high-value bits.
Convert wafer capacity into qualified bits
Nominal wafer starts are only an input. Process node, die size, yield, test capacity, package availability, and product allocation determine how many bits become sellable. High-bandwidth memory (HBM) adds advanced packaging and testing constraints; a shortage of packaging capacity can cap revenue even when front-end wafers are available.
Ask each issuer for actual bit growth and output, not just cleanroom floor area. Reconcile reported bit shipments with wafer capacity, yield commentary, and the mix of commodity products, HBM, enterprise SSDs, mobile memory, and other products.
Read capex phasing as a demand signal
Management plans to phase investment when customer demand is uncertain. That can reduce the risk of an uncontrolled supply surge, but it also means an announced project may contribute little for years. Record committed spending, optional spending, expected start of production, and the customer or qualification milestone that would trigger each phase.

Step 3: Test the quality of customer demand
Decompose revenue into bits, price, and mix
Revenue growth alone does not show whether demand is expanding or prices are temporarily inflated. Compare year-over-year bit shipments with ASP changes. If revenue rises mainly because ASPs rose while bits were flat, the result is more price-sensitive than a balanced increase in volume and price. Then identify how much of the change came from HBM, server DRAM, enterprise SSDs, mobile, client, automotive, or other products.

Compare end markets and customer concentration
AI and data-center demand can support premium products, but concentration can increase bargaining and execution risk. Track the share of revenue or bits tied to major customers, the number of qualified customers, and whether a new product has passed production qualification. A broad mix across cloud, mobile, client, automotive, and industrial customers may respond differently when inventories or capital budgets change.
Look for inventory and allocation evidence
Check finished-goods inventory, days of inventory, customer inventory commentary, allocation decisions, and lead times. Tight allocation can indicate strong demand or constrained supply; it does not by itself prove that end-user consumption is healthy. Conversely, a rapid inventory build can precede price pressure even when management describes bookings positively.
Read contracts by their actual terms
Multi-year agreements can improve volume visibility, but review minimum and maximum volumes, pricing bands, renegotiation dates, take-or-pay provisions, termination rights, and customer credit quality. Fixed or periodically negotiated pricing can protect a portion of revenue while leaving other output exposed to spot prices. A take-or-pay clause does not make all earnings immune to a later supply correction.
Step 4: Stress-test profit durability and cyclicality
Memory is cyclical because suppliers can add capacity faster than demand grows during upswings, while customers destock during downturns. A robust comparison tests at least three conditions:
- Peak: current ASPs, premium mix, high utilization, and strong yields.
- Mid-cycle: normalized pricing and margins with sustainable capital spending.
- Down-cycle: lower ASPs, weaker utilization, inventory corrections, and delayed projects.
Compare gross and operating margins across more than one quarter, then estimate the cash required to maintain technology leadership. Also model how quickly competitors could add bits and how long new capacity would take to qualify. A durable advantage may come from yield, packaging, customer qualification, or cost—not simply from having more wafer starts.
What Micron’s FY2026 filing shows
Micron’s FY2026 Form 10-K filed September 3, 2026 is company-level evidence, not an industry forecast. It says AI-driven memory and storage demand outpaced industry supply and describes supply-allocation decisions that could affect customers and end markets.

Revenue growth was led by both price and bits
For Micron’s fiscal year 2026, DRAM sales increased 252%. The filing attributes that primarily to an approximately 180% increase in ASP and a bit-shipment increase in the mid-20% range. NAND sales increased 274%, attributed primarily to approximately 200% ASP growth and a mid-20% range increase in bits. The combination shows why a valuation model must separate price from volume: most of the reported sales increase came from pricing, while bit growth was much smaller.

Micron reported consolidated gross margin of 81% for FY2026, compared with 40% in FY2025 and 22% in FY2024. Those figures are useful for a stress test, not a promise that 81% is sustainable. Recalculate earnings using a materially lower margin and the capital spending needed to support future nodes and packaging.
Cloud and data-center mix changed sharply
Micron reported FY2026 Cloud Memory Business Unit revenue of $43.09 billion, versus $13.52 billion in FY2025. Core Data Center Business Unit revenue was $37.59 billion, versus $7.23 billion in FY2025. These are reported segment results showing mix and demand during that fiscal year; they do not establish that the growth rate will continue.
Contracts add visibility without eliminating price risk
Micron describes multi-year strategic customer agreements with enforceable volume commitments and pricing that is fixed or periodically negotiated. Most agreements have minimum and maximum pricing bands. Include those bands and volume obligations in the demand-quality section of the model rather than treating contracted revenue as fully fixed.
Micron states: “The AI-driven growth in the data center has accelerated demand for memory and storage at a rate greater than our ability and the industry’s ability to increase supply.” This is Micron’s statement in its FY2026 Form 10-K, not an independent market estimate.

Reported profitability was exceptionally high
For Q2 2026, SK hynix reported revenue of 79.3187 trillion won and operating profit of 60.5426 trillion won. It reported a 76% operating margin, compared with 41% in Q2 2025, and attributed the results to AI infrastructure demand and high-performance products. Because the figures are preliminary and represent one quarter, use them as a current-cycle observation and pair them with a normalized case.
HBM and customer commitments affect the demand test
The company said HBM4 mass shipments began in Q2 2026 and production would ramp in the second half of the year. It also said it had finalized long-term agreements with around 10 customers and was continuing talks with major industry clients. Verify the volume, pricing, qualification, and timing terms before assigning those agreements a value in a forecast.
NAND and future capacity remain separate from current output
SK hynix said 321-layer products represented the largest share of production and that it planned to expand them to approximately 50% of domestic production capacity by year-end. It described an accelerated M15X mass-production schedule and said the Yongin Phase 1 cleanroom was expected to open in early 2027. Longer-term investments, including P&T7, M17 NAND, and a new semiconductor cluster, were described as phased according to customer demand and investment efficiency. Those are company plans, not completed capacity; place them in the future pipeline with their expected dates.
SK hynix states: “In a market environment where customer demand exceeds supply capabilities, the ability to deliver requested volumes in a timely manner has emerged as a core business competitiveness.” Treat this as the company’s stated view, not as an independent forecast.
Build a repeatable comparison worksheet
- Set the snapshot date. Use the same market close, fiscal period, currency convention, and accounting basis for every issuer.
- Enter security data. Record listing venue, share-price currency, depositary-share ratio if applicable, diluted shares, cash, debt, and minority interests.
- Calculate current valuation. Produce equity value, EV, P/E, EV/EBIT, EV/EBITDA, and price-to-free-cash-flow using clearly labeled trailing or forward figures.
- Create normalized cases. Replace peak ASPs and margins with conservative, base, and favorable assumptions; show the resulting earnings and free cash flow.
- Map capacity. For DRAM and NAND separately, list qualified output, bit growth, process node, yield, packaging, utilization, ramping lines, and planned facilities.
- Decompose demand. Compare bit shipments with ASPs and identify AI/data-center, mobile, client, automotive, enterprise, and other contributions.
- Score visibility. Document customer concentration, qualification progress, inventory, allocation, contract volumes, pricing bands, and termination conditions.
- Stress the cycle. Test a price decline, lower utilization, delayed ramp, higher capital spending, and a supply catch-up scenario.
- Record evidence dates. Label every figure as reported, preliminary, guided, or planned so a forecast is not mistaken for actual output.
Common comparison mistakes
- Ranking on a single P/E: a high current EPS denominator can make a cyclical peak look cheap.
- Counting announced fabs as supply: construction and qualification can take years.
- Using wafer starts as revenue: yield, die size, package availability, and product allocation intervene.
- Mixing DRAM and NAND: their demand, technology, and pricing cycles are not interchangeable.
- Treating AI demand as permanent: customer capital spending and memory supply can both change.
- Ignoring pricing in contracts: volume commitments with bands or renegotiation still leave earnings exposure.
- Comparing unaudited and audited numbers without labels: preliminary results can change.
- Ignoring exchange and listing structure: a domestic share, an American Depositary Share, and a Global Depository Share can have different access, liquidity, fees, and currency exposure.
- Forgetting conglomerate breadth: a broad company may give shareholders less direct memory exposure than a pure-play manufacturer, but the available disclosures do not quantify that difference.
How to interpret listings and shareholder exposure
SK hynix identifies its common shares as traded on the Korea Exchange, its American Depositary Shares on NASDAQ, and its Global Depository Shares on the Luxembourg Stock Exchange. A listing venue does not by itself establish that an instrument is accessible or appropriate for every reader. Check local brokerage access, custody costs, trading hours, currency conversion, tax treatment, depositary fees, and voting rights before treating two listings as interchangeable.
For any memory manufacturer, distinguish operating exposure from security exposure. A conglomerate’s consolidated results may include businesses unrelated to memory, while a pure-play’s share price may react more directly to DRAM and NAND cycles. Compare segment reporting and capital allocation rather than assuming the ticker is a one-for-one proxy for memory prices.
What a defensible conclusion looks like
A defensible comparison does not end with “the lowest multiple wins.” It states which valuation the market is assigning under current conditions, what the stock would be worth under normalized earnings, how much qualified DRAM and NAND output exists today, what capacity is merely planned, and whether customer demand is supported by shipments, qualification, inventory, and contract terms. It also shows the downside if ASPs normalize before new capacity is absorbed.
