Phobos is Mars’s inner and larger moon; Deimos is the outer and smaller one. Both are dark, irregular, heavily cratered bodies, but Phobos looks more rugged because of its prominent grooves and the enormous Stickney crater, while loose surface material makes Deimos’s impact craters look partly softened. Their origin is still unresolved: NASA describes asteroid capture and formation from debris left over from the early Solar System as competing possibilities, not established conclusions.

The clearest comparison keeps three measurements separate. A moon’s three dimensions describe its irregular shape, an orbital semimajor axis is measured from Mars’s center, and an altitude is measured above the Martian surface. Using those definitions, Phobos is about 27 × 22 × 18 kilometers and orbits at a mean semimajor axis of 9,378 kilometers; Deimos is about 15 × 12 × 11 kilometers and orbits at 23,459 kilometers.

That distinction prevents several common errors. Calling either moon a single “27-kilometer” or “15-kilometer” sphere hides the other two axes. Likewise, comparing Phobos’s center-to-center semimajor axis with a surface altitude produces an apparently precise but mismatched result. NASA’s measurements, rounded descriptions and cautious statements about origin are most useful when each quantity is labeled clearly.

How their sizes and shapes differ

Phobos is the larger moon

NASA gives Phobos dimensions of approximately 27 × 22 × 18 km. Those are three-axis dimensions, not the diameter of a round world. The longest axis is therefore about 27 km, while the shortest is about 18 km. Describing Phobos simply as “27 km wide” is a convenient shorthand, but it should not be read as evidence that the moon has a circular cross-section.

Its larger size is apparent in both imagery and the reference physical data. NASA Goddard’s Mars Fact Sheet lists a mean radius along the subplanetary axis of 13.0 km, a mass of 10.6 × 1015 kg, and a mean density of 1,900 kg/m3. The subplanetary-axis radius is a specified directional measure; it is not an average radius for a perfect sphere. The mass and density figures should therefore be quoted with their labels and units rather than converted into a fictional spherical model.

Using the longest listed axes as a simple visual guide, Phobos is roughly 1.8 times as long as Deimos. That ratio is only a comparison of the supplied longest dimensions, not a claim that either object has a uniform shape or volume. Its other two axes are larger as well, so Phobos is the more substantial body in the side-by-side NASA values.

Deimos is smaller and somewhat less jagged in appearance

Deimos measures about 15 × 12 × 11 km. Its longest dimension is only a little over half Phobos’s longest dimension, and its overall relief appears less dramatic in photographs. That visual impression does not mean Deimos is smooth or uncratered. It is also an irregular body with many impact scars.

The same NASA reference sheet lists Deimos’s mean radius along the subplanetary axis as 7.8 km, its mass as 2.4 × 1015 kg, and its mean density as 1,750 kg/m3. The lower density is a reference value, not proof that Deimos has a particular internal structure; the moons’ interiors and exact compositions remain subjects of planetary investigation. Density alone cannot settle whether either moon was captured or formed near Mars.

Why a side-by-side picture can mislead

Photographs are often taken at different distances, lighting angles and resolutions. A close image of Phobos can make it appear dramatically larger than Deimos even when scale bars are absent. Conversely, an image that emphasizes Deimos’s broad, dust-covered plains can make it look nearly spherical. Use the three dimensions and a stated image scale when size matters, and treat visual “roundness” as an appearance rather than a geometric measurement.

Perspective also changes how deep a crater seems. Shadows can exaggerate ridges on Phobos, while low-contrast lighting can hide relief on Deimos. A fair comparison therefore uses measurements for size and descriptive observations for texture. Neither a dramatic photograph nor a smooth-looking patch replaces the NASA dimensions.

Orbit: which moon is closer, and how fast does each travel?

Phobos is the inner moon

Phobos’s mean orbital semimajor axis is about 9,378 km from the center of Mars. Its sidereal period is 0.31891 days, equivalent to about 7.65 hours. NASA’s public descriptions round this behavior to roughly three orbits around Mars each day. The semimajor axis is the standard orbital-size measure: for a slightly noncircular orbit, it is the long-term reference distance used to describe the orbit, not a constant surface-to-moon gap at every instant.

Because the value is measured from Mars’s center, it should not be read as the height a spacecraft or observer would measure above the ground. The moon is close enough to Mars that switching reference points changes the number substantially. Keeping “from Mars’s center” in the sentence makes the comparison reproducible.

Deimos is farther out and slower

Deimos has a mean semimajor axis of about 23,459 km from Mars’s center. Its sidereal period is 1.26244 days, or about 30.3 hours. NASA commonly rounds that to “about 30 hours.” The larger orbital size and longer period make Deimos the outer, slower-moving moon in this comparison.

The periods are best compared in the same unit. In days, Phobos takes 0.31891 and Deimos 1.26244; in hours, they are approximately 7.65 and 30.3. Mixing a rounded “three orbits per day” statement with an unrounded decimal is acceptable only when the rounding is identified. It is not evidence of conflicting measurements.

Do not confuse orbital distance with altitude

“Distance from Mars” can refer to two different measurements. The 9,378-km and 23,459-km values are center-to-center semimajor axes. They are not heights above the Martian ground. NASA also describes Phobos as being about 3,700 miles above the Martian surface; that is an altitude-style description and uses a different reference point. A technically correct comparison must label which quantity it is using.

Surface appearance and geology

Phobos: grooves, steep relief and Stickney crater

Phobos is heavily cratered, but its most recognizable features are long grooves and the large Stickney crater. The grooves cut across parts of the moon and contribute to its strongly rugged appearance. Stickney is so prominent that it can dominate a photograph, making the moon’s already irregular outline look even more dramatic.

Calling Phobos “rocky” or “asteroid-like” does not remove the need to describe what is actually visible. Its surface has impact craters, ridges, grooves and loose material. The presence of grooves is a visual distinction from Deimos, not a claim that every groove has a single confirmed origin. A careful description identifies the feature without assigning an unproved cause.

Stickney is useful as a comparison landmark because it immediately signals that the image is of Phobos, but it should not be mistaken for evidence that Deimos has experienced no large impacts. The two moons differ in how their relief and loose material present the record, not in whether impacts occurred.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Deimos: cratered, but softened by loose material

Deimos is also heavily cratered. Its surface looks smoother because loose regolith partly fills and softens the outlines of some craters. The smoother appearance is therefore a surface-process effect, not an absence of impacts. Deimos lacks the prominent groove-and-ridge pattern that makes Phobos look more broken and sharply textured.

When comparing photographs, separate “number of craters” from “how sharply the craters stand out.” Both moons record substantial impact histories. Deimos’s blanket of loose material changes the visual contrast and relief, while Phobos exposes more obvious structural features. Saying that Deimos is smoother describes the appearance created by that material; it does not mean the moon is polished, flat or geologically crater-free.

Shared traits

  • Both moons are small compared with Mars and irregular rather than spherical.
  • Both are dark bodies with heavily cratered surfaces.
  • Neither surface can be summarized accurately as either completely smooth or uniformly solid rock.
  • The contrast between them is mainly one of scale, relief and surface texture: Phobos is larger and more rugged-looking, while Deimos is smaller and more muted by loose material.
  • A photograph’s lighting and viewing angle can strengthen or weaken those visual differences.

What is known about their origin?

No origin model has been confirmed. NASA’s Mars: Facts page says that Phobos and Deimos “may be captured asteroids,” while NASA’s Mars Moons: Facts page states that “The origin of Phobos and Deimos is still being debated.” Those statements are deliberately cautious: they identify plausible explanations without presenting either one as settled.

Captured-asteroid scenario

Under the capture idea, Mars acquired two small bodies that formed elsewhere in the Solar System and were later trapped by its gravity. Their dark, irregular, cratered appearances are consistent with bodies that could resemble asteroids. However, resemblance alone does not establish capture, and orbital history and composition must also be considered. The correct wording is “may be captured asteroids,” not “are asteroids captured by Mars.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Formation from early debris

A competing family of models proposes that the moons formed from debris associated with the early Martian system or an ancient impact and then assembled into their present bodies. This explanation can account for a local origin near Mars, but it must match the moons’ shapes, densities, surfaces and present orbits. Public NASA summaries describe this as a possibility, not a demonstrated event.

Why the question remains open

The moons are small, their surfaces have been altered by impacts and loose material, and available observations do not provide a single decisive fingerprint. A responsible comparison therefore says “possible captured asteroids” and “possible debris formed near Mars,” then identifies the origin as unknown. It should not state that either moon definitely came from the asteroid belt or definitely formed from a Martian impact.

Even the table’s density values do not resolve the issue. Phobos’s listed mean density is 1,900 kg/m3, compared with 1,750 kg/m3 for Deimos, but a density number is a bulk reference property. It is not a direct identification tag for a formation pathway. Origin remains a question for continued planetary study.

Phobos’s long-term orbital fate

An inward spiral

Phobos is slowly spiraling inward toward Mars. NASA estimates that, on an approximately 50-million-year timescale, it could either collide with Mars or break apart before reaching the planet and form a ring. This is a long-term forecast, not a precise countdown; the number should not be treated as a scheduled impact date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The estimate matters because Phobos is not in a permanently unchanging orbit. Its present closeness to Mars is tied to its eventual fate, making orbital position a key difference between the moons rather than a simple distance ranking. The two possible outcomes should both be retained: collision with Mars or breakup followed by ring formation.

What to say about Deimos

The comparison does not require assigning Deimos a matching near-term fate. The NASA summaries used here describe Phobos’s inward evolution but do not provide a comparable imminent-outcome claim for Deimos. It is more accurate to leave Deimos’s long-term destiny outside this specific conclusion than to imply that both moons face the same timeline.

A reliable method for comparing the two moons

  1. Define the property. Decide whether the question concerns physical size, orbital distance, orbital period, surface texture or origin. These are different comparisons and should not be blended into one vague ranking.
  2. Use three dimensions for size. Record 27 × 22 × 18 km for Phobos and 15 × 12 × 11 km for Deimos rather than assigning each an imaginary spherical diameter.
  3. Label the distance reference. Identify 9,378 km and 23,459 km as mean semimajor axes from Mars’s center. If a source gives altitude above the surface, keep that value in a separate column.
  4. Use the same kind of period. Compare the sidereal periods—0.31891 days and 1.26244 days—or clearly label rounded descriptions such as three orbits per day and about 30 hours.
  5. Describe appearance separately from geology. Say that Phobos has visible grooves and Stickney crater, while Deimos’s loose material partly fills craters. Do not convert a smoother appearance into a claim that Deimos lacks impacts.
  6. Use physical values with their definitions. If quoting the 13.0-km and 7.8-km radii, call them mean radii along the subplanetary axis. If quoting mass or density, retain kilograms and kilograms per cubic metre.
  7. Mark origin statements as hypotheses. Present captured asteroids and early debris as competing explanations and retain “unknown” as the evidence-based status.
  8. Add time context to forecasts. If mentioning Phobos’s possible collision or ring formation, include NASA’s approximately 50-million-year estimate and identify it as a forecast.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Calling either moon spherical: both are irregular, so one diameter is an incomplete description.
  • Mixing center distance and surface altitude: a semimajor axis measured from Mars’s center cannot be compared directly with a height above the ground.
  • Rounding away the distinction: “three orbits a day” and “about 30 hours” are useful summaries, but the NASA reference periods are 0.31891 and 1.26244 days.
  • Equating smoothness with no craters: Deimos’s loose material partly fills craters; it remains heavily cratered.
  • Presenting origin as settled: NASA explicitly describes the origin as debated.
  • Treating the 50-million-year estimate as a deadline: it is an approximate long-term forecast for Phobos, with two possible outcomes—impact or breakup into a ring.
  • Using a radius without its qualifier: the subplanetary-axis values are directional reference measures, not the radius of a spherical moon.
  • Reading composition into appearance: “dark,” “rugged” and “smooth-looking” describe observations; they do not by themselves prove how either moon formed.

Frequently asked questions

Which moon is bigger, Phobos or Deimos?

Phobos is bigger. NASA lists it at about 27 × 22 × 18 km, compared with 15 × 12 × 11 km for Deimos. Since both are irregular, those three dimensions are more informative than a single diameter.

Which moon is closer to Mars?

Phobos is closer. Its mean orbital semimajor axis is 9,378 km from Mars’s center, while Deimos’s is 23,459 km. Those are center-to-center orbital measures, not altitudes above the surface.

How long does each moon take to orbit Mars?

Phobos takes about 7.65 hours, or 0.31891 days, and is often described by NASA as making roughly three orbits per day. Deimos takes about 30.3 hours, or 1.26244 days.

Is Deimos smooth?

No. Deimos is heavily cratered, but loose surface material partly fills and softens some craters, giving it a smoother appearance than Phobos. “Smoother-looking” is not the same as uncratered.

What is Stickney crater?

Stickney is the large, prominent crater on Phobos. It is one of the moon’s defining visual features and helps explain why Phobos appears especially rugged in photographs.

Do both moons have grooves?

Phobos is the moon associated with the prominent grooves and ridges emphasized in NASA descriptions. Deimos lacks that comparable groove-and-ridge pattern in the comparison presented here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are Phobos and Deimos captured asteroids?

That is one hypothesis, not a confirmed fact. NASA says they may be captured asteroids and separately notes that their origin is still debated. Models involving debris formed near early Mars are also possible.

Will Phobos hit Mars?

NASA estimates that on an approximately 50-million-year timescale Phobos could collide with Mars or break apart before impact and form a ring. The estimate is approximate and should not be treated as a precise date.

Does Deimos have the same predicted fate?

Not in the NASA summaries used for this comparison. Those sources provide the inward-spiral forecast for Phobos, not a matching near-term outcome for Deimos, so the two should not be given identical timelines.

Why do measurements sometimes look different on NASA pages?

NASA pages round values for public descriptions, while the NASA Goddard NSSDC Mars Fact Sheet provides reference decimals and specified measures. “About 30 hours” and 1.26244 days describe the same rounded period; the key is to identify the unit and measurement type.

Bottom line: which moon is bigger, closer and more rugged?

Phobos is the larger and closer moon, with dimensions of about 27 × 22 × 18 km, a 9,378-km mean semimajor axis from Mars’s center and an orbit lasting about 7.65 hours. Deimos is smaller and farther away at about 15 × 12 × 11 km, 23,459 km from Mars’s center and roughly 30.3 hours per orbit. Both are dark, irregular, cratered bodies. Phobos stands out for its grooves and Stickney crater; Deimos appears smoother because loose material softens parts of its cratered surface. Their origin remains an open question involving capture and early-debris hypotheses, and Phobos alone has a NASA-published long-term forecast of inward migration toward a possible impact or ring-forming breakup.
