Compare the laptops using the same workload and test conditions—not by matching advertised battery-hour figures. Set both screens to the same measured brightness, keep network and power settings consistent, finish background updates, and repeat each test equally. Report separate results for browsing, streaming, local video, or mixed work: each measures a different kind of use.
Why battery-life comparisons can mislead
A battery-life number describes a particular workload and setup, not a universal property of a laptop. Continuous playback of a local video can use less power than interactive browsing because it requires less network activity and fewer active tasks. Streaming, web browsing, and mixed productivity therefore should be tested and reported separately.
Small setup differences can materially change a result. Microsoft’s Windows 11 measurement guidance identifies brightness method, refresh rate, network state, power policy, ambient conditions, and background activity as factors to control or record. Microsoft’s battery measurement guidance is a useful protocol reference, though its workflow is for Windows measurement rather than a platform-wide Mac-versus-Windows ranking.

- Choose one representative workload. For mobile work, use a repeatable browsing or mixed-productivity task. If video viewing matters most, run a separate playback test. Do not compare one laptop’s local-video runtime with another’s browsing runtime.
- Match measured screen luminance. Set both displays to the same luminance in nits rather than the same slider percentage. Microsoft describes 150 nits as a widely used baseline for comparability; another target is reasonable if disclosed and applied consistently. Disable adaptive brightness for a controlled test, or leave it enabled on both for a default-use comparison and state that choice. Microsoft’s guidance lists colorimeters capable of measuring luminance. A meter is optional, but slider positions alone do not establish equal brightness.
- Align display settings where practical. Record panel type and size, refresh rate, HDR state, and automatic-brightness behavior. Keep refresh rates aligned where possible; otherwise disclose the difference.
- Keep connectivity and power consistent. For connected everyday use, leave internet access on and use comparable Wi-Fi conditions. Record each laptop’s power mode and Bluetooth or cellular state. Also note keyboard backlight, volume, ambient temperature, and placement.
- Prepare both systems. Install operating-system, driver, firmware, and app updates before testing. Wait for maintenance, synchronization, antivirus scans, and indexing to finish. Keep software and settings unchanged between runs.
- Repeat and report the measurement. Use the same number of trials on each device. Microsoft recommends at least three runs within a week and targets a coefficient of variation below 5% for its workflow; these are Microsoft’s testing targets, not a universal standard. State whether the result is a full battery rundown or an extrapolation from a partial battery window.
Record enough detail to make the result interpretable
A comparison should let readers see what was tested and whether the setups were genuinely alike. Include these details with each result:

- SPECIFICATIONS: Monitor calibration colorimeter with Easy 1 2 3 software workflow, USB C connection, compact body approx. 34mm tall x 37mm diameter, adjustable counterweight for screen placement, supports up to 2 displays, brightness target selection including Native or Photo with before and after check.
- EASY SETUP: Guided 1 2 3 workflow makes calibration fast and approachable, helping photographers and creators achieve more accurate color without complicated settings, so you can edit with confidence and trust what you see on screen.
- COLOR ACCURACY: Corrects common monitor color shifts to deliver truer tones and more reliable contrast, improving consistency across editing sessions and helping your images look closer to final output on other screens and devices.
- DUAL DISPLAY SUPPORT: Calibrates up to 2 monitors for matching color across a multi screen workspace, ideal for photo editing, video work, and creative setups where consistent viewing on both displays matters.
- BEFORE AFTER CHECK: Built in comparison view lets you instantly see the difference after calibration, making it easy to confirm improved accuracy and maintain consistent results by repeating the process on a regular schedule.
- Device: exact model and configuration, including processor, memory, storage, display size and type, refresh rate, and battery configuration.
- Workload: browsing, streaming, local video, mixed productivity, or another specifically described task.
- Display: measured nits, adaptive-brightness state, refresh rate, HDR, and keyboard lighting.
- Connectivity: Wi-Fi conditions, internet availability, and Bluetooth or cellular state.
- Power and software: power mode, operating-system and app versions, and whether updates or background activity were present.
- Measurement: battery level at the start and end, full rundown or extrapolation, number of runs, and variation between runs.
Keep workload-specific runtimes separate instead of combining them into a single “battery life” score. For example, a long local-video result answers how long that playback setup lasted; it does not predict an equally long session of browsing with active Wi-Fi. Standardized independent tests can help compare models under one lab’s common procedure, but they are not precise predictions for every person’s browsing or gaming habits. RTINGS, for example, says its battery tests are run once, a limitation to consider when interpreting that dataset. RTINGS’ battery-test methodology provides its stated context.

Read “up to” runtimes as results tied to the manufacturer’s stated test, not as a promise for every owner. Check the named workload, brightness, wireless state, software version, configuration, and whether standby time is included. If those details differ—or are not provided—the figures are not directly comparable.

Microsoft’s Surface disclosures illustrate the issue: claims can draw on mixed active use plus Modern Standby, web browsing, or local video, with different test dates and settings. Those workloads should not be ranked as though they were one benchmark. For instance, Microsoft describes a Surface Laptop 6 for Business mixed-use test conducted in February 2024: browsing across eight websites, productivity apps, and idle applications, at 150 nits with Wi-Fi connected. That is not equivalent to continuous video playback. Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 6 for Business disclosures should be read alongside the specific claim and test description rather than treated as a general Windows-laptop result.
There is no basis here for claiming that MacBook Pro or Windows laptops categorically last longer. A meaningful model comparison needs exact configurations and workload-matched results; the title alone does not specify a MacBook Pro generation, Windows model, or region.
