Compare laptop benchmark scores directly only when the test suite and version, test type, workload, and relevant test conditions match. If they do not, treat the numbers as separate pieces of evidence—not as points on one universal scale or as inputs to a single ranking.
Start by identifying what each result actually measures, then decide whether that workload answers your question. A CPU score can help assess CPU performance; it cannot establish which laptop has better graphics, storage, battery life, or overall responsiveness.
Why different benchmark scores may not be comparable
A benchmark score is the outcome of a particular test, not a general rating of a laptop. Test suites use different workloads, scoring methods, and scopes. Even tests within one suite may answer different questions: UL says that scores from different PCMark 10 tests are not comparable, and recommends reporting the full test name rather than a generic “PCMark” score. UL’s PCMark 10 guidance explains test selection and naming.
There is no general conversion that turns scores from unrelated suites into a shared scale. SPEC says CPU 2017 results are validly compared with other CPU 2017 results, not with results from other suites. Its tests are designed to measure CPU performance, not networking, graphics, Java libraries, or the I/O system. SPEC’s CPU 2017 overview sets out that scope.
#1 Best Overall
- FULL HD IPS DISPLAY - Enjoy vibrant, crystal-clear images with 178-degree wide-viewing angles
- AMD RYZEN 3 30 PROCESSOR - Everyday performance you can count on; Multitask, stream, game casually, and edit photos smoothly with responsive power and vibrant HDR visuals
- ENJOY UP TO 14 HOURS AND 15 MINUTES OF BATTERY LIFE - HP Fast Charge restores battery from 0 to 50% in approximately 45 minutes
- AMD RADEON 610M GRAPHICS - Experience smooth entertainment; Built for streaming and multitasking, enjoy realistic visuals and efficient performance for work and play
- STORAGE AND MEMORY - 512 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD offers fast speed and efficient storage; and 8 GB LPDDR5 RAM memory boosts performance with higher bandwidth
So if one laptop has a higher score in one test and another leads in a different test, the evidence supports only those test-specific findings. It does not, by itself, establish a universal winner.
Build a like-for-like comparison
Before comparing two results, capture the details that determine what the scores mean. A review table that omits these details may still be useful as a snapshot, but it does not establish a fair head-to-head comparison.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
- Suite and version: Record the complete benchmark name and version, such as Geekbench 6.7 or Geekbench 7, and the named PCMark test or profile.
- Test and score type: Distinguish single-core from multi-core, graphics from productivity, and a battery scenario from a performance score. A suite may produce several different results.
- Workload and intended use: Identify whether the test represents a synthetic component workload, a real application task, a game, an office workflow, or a battery-use scenario. Ask whether it resembles the work you care about.
- Laptop configuration: Note the exact model and configuration, including processor, graphics hardware, memory, and any reported firmware or driver context. A result for a processor does not automatically describe every laptop built around it.
- Run conditions: Check whether the laptop was plugged in or on battery, which performance and fan modes were used, and whether background activity or operating-system state could have affected the run. Record ambient conditions when reported.
- Repeatability: Look for repeated runs and how results were summarized, such as an average or mode. UL advises testing devices under the same conditions and repeating tests when needed. Its statement that benchmark precision is “usually better than 3%” is a general statement about UL benchmarks—not a universal margin for all scores or permission to compare different methods. UL’s testing guide describes its recommendations.
- Result provenance: Establish whether the figure comes from a controlled review run, a manufacturer claim, or a database entry, and whether the settings and complete result are available.
When these details do not match, keep the results separate in your notes or table. State the methodological difference plainly, then draw only the conclusion supported by the tests.

Everyday office responsiveness
Look for a workload that exercises relevant applications and actions rather than relying on a generic aggregate score. PCMark offers distinct test types, and its Application benchmark uses Microsoft Office applications; name the specific test so readers know what the score represents. CPU-heavy tasks
Compare the same CPU test and version, and check whether it measures a short burst or sustained work. SPEC CPU 2017 is a CPU-focused suite, not a whole-laptop assessment. SPEC’s overview also says the suite is to be retired following the release of SPEC CPU 2026; identify CPU 2017 by name and result context rather than presenting it as the newest SPEC suite. SPEC’s overview explains both its scope and status.
Graphics and gaming
Use a graphics or game workload that matches the target resolution, image-quality settings, and graphics API where possible. A CPU-only result cannot stand in for a graphics result, even when both come from the same laptop.

Creative applications
Prefer a benchmark using the application you actually use, or a clearly described workload that represents it. A synthetic aggregate may not predict performance equally across different creative applications.

Battery life
Compare the same battery scenario and procedure. Runtime depends on how the laptop is used, so disclose details such as screen brightness, wireless activity, power settings, and workload. UL’s PCMark battery profile includes multiple usage scenarios; a video-loop result is not equivalent to an office-work profile. UL’s PCMark 10 Battery Life Profile overview describes the scenario-based approach.

Check version labels before comparing scores
Benchmark publishers set compatibility rules for their own suites; do not assume that a score scale survives a major version change. Primate Labs says Geekbench 6.7 scores remain comparable with versions 6.3, 6.4, 6.5, and 6.6. Its Geekbench 7 announcement describes a redesigned multi-core benchmark, so do not assume a Geekbench 6 result and a Geekbench 7 result share a scale. Primate Labs’ Geekbench 6.7 announcement and its notice about Geekbench 6 and Intel’s Binary Optimization Tool give version-specific context.
The March 2026 notice says Geekbench 6 results generated with Intel’s Binary Optimization Tool are not comparable with results generated without it. If a result may be affected, check for the publisher’s warning and disclose whether that context applies. This is a specific compatibility warning, not a reason to assume every Geekbench 6 result is affected.
What to conclude when the methods differ
Describe each result in its own terms: name the test, version, workload, and relevant conditions, then say what it indicates and what it cannot establish. For example, a lead in a short CPU burst test supports a claim about that test; a lead by another laptop in a longer real-application workload supports a different claim. Neither result alone settles which machine is better for every use.

If a review gives too little information to establish that two runs used matching methods, avoid treating their scores as directly comparable. You can still use each result as limited evidence about its stated test, while relying on matched tests for a head-to-head conclusion.
