Compare an iPhone trade-in by the value you can actually keep after required plan costs, financing, deadlines and potential lost credits—not by the largest advertised “up to” figure. Get an offer for your exact model and condition, calculate the full cost of receiving it, and check what happens if you cancel service, pay off the phone early or upgrade again.
What makes two iPhone offers comparable?
A direct trade-in and a carrier promotion may both reduce the cost of a new iPhone, but they do not necessarily pay in the same way or impose the same obligations. A direct offer may return value through a payment method or apply it to a purchase. A carrier promotion may depend on financing, account or plan requirements and may arrive as credits over time. Compare the amount you can use, the cost and duration of the commitments required, and the consequences of changing your plans.
Build a separate comparison for every route you are considering. Use the same old iPhone details in each: exact model, storage capacity and honestly stated condition. Then record the offer’s cash-equivalent value, any extra service cost, payment or credit timing, trade-in deadline, inspection rules, and what happens if you leave, pay off the new phone or upgrade early. Those details are what turn a headline offer into a useful comparison.

Calculate the net value, not just the advertised credit
For a simple first pass, subtract the additional service cost required for the offer over the period you must keep that service from the value you expect to receive. Also account for any financing obligation or device balance you would still owe. Keep ordinary service costs you would pay anyway separate from incremental costs: if a plan is already right for you, its full price is not necessarily a cost created by the promotion. If you would choose a more expensive plan only to qualify, the difference is part of the promotion’s cost.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Do not assume every promotional dollar is equivalent to cash in hand. A credit spread over future bills has value only if you meet the offer requirements for as long as needed to receive it. A gift card, payment-method credit, down-payment reduction and monthly bill credit have different uses and timing. Write down the form of payment as well as the advertised amount.
Compare the trade-in routes
The table summarizes the mechanics described on the official U.S. program pages accessed October 13, 2026. The offer-specific terms control; a provider’s general trade-in page is not a guarantee that a particular promotion applies to your device or account.
| Route | How value may be delivered | Timing and return requirements | Important conditions to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Trade In | For a full-price purchase, an approved credit goes to the original payment method up to the purchase price; any excess is issued as an Apple Gift Card. For monthly payments, Apple says the estimated trade-in credit is applied to the purchase price, subject to verification. | Apple says an online trade-in device should arrive within 14 days after the new device arrives. The stated general online process is 2–3 weeks. | Value depends on the device, model, manufacturer and condition. Apple verifies condition after receipt and may revise its estimate. |
| AT&T | The trade-in page describes device offers, promotional cards and bill credits. | The terms, eligibility and duration depend on the applicable offer; check its current detailed terms. | Some bill credits may stop if you pay off an installment balance early or upgrade early. The September 2026 iPhone 18 Pro announcement is a promotion, not an individualized eligibility decision. |
| Verizon | Market-value trades may be paid by Verizon gift card or PayPal credit. Promotional value is applied over the new device contract and deducted from device payments. | Promotional credits may depend on maintaining an eligible plan for the offer term. | Conditions vary by offer. Some existing-customer promotions require the device to have been active on a Verizon account for 60 consecutive days. Credits may stop after service cancellation, early payoff or early upgrade. |
| T-Mobile | Depending on the offer and transaction, value may be applied to a financing plan, down payment, new-device or accessory purchase, or account bill. | For mailed trade-ins, the device must arrive by the trade-in expiration date and be validated. | Evaluation may change the price or promotional eligibility. Promotional credits depend on completing the offer requirements. |
These are different payment structures, not a ranking. Apple’s explanation of payment methods is on its Trade In program page; its carrier-deals page also presents carrier offers as a way to buy an iPhone through Apple. AT&T’s trade-in page and current offer terms, Verizon’s iPhone trade-in FAQ and promotion support page, and T-Mobile’s trade-in terms explain their respective mechanics. T-Mobile’s general trade-in terms are effective October 30, 2024; the promotion-specific terms still govern a particular deal.

How to compare offers step by step
- Identify the device precisely. Record the old iPhone’s model, storage and condition as requested by each program. Use the same description for every quote. A model or condition mismatch makes the figures incomparable.
- Get the estimate and save the offer terms. Note the quoted value, the date, the offer name and the conditions that appear with it. For a carrier promotion, capture the eligible plan, financing, line-status and trade-in requirements, plus the credit duration. A general landing-page description is not a substitute for the terms of the specific offer.
- Translate the payout into usable value. Label whether the credit is applied at checkout, paid to an original payment method, issued as a gift or promotional card, or spread across bills or device payments. Include only the value you expect to receive under your planned use of the account.
- Price the commitment over its full term. Compare the plan you would otherwise choose with the plan required by the promotion. Multiply any incremental monthly service cost by the number of months you must keep it, and include other stated costs or remaining device obligations. If the offer does not establish a duration or cost, do not guess—get the applicable terms before deciding.
- Check the exit scenarios. Find the terms for canceling service, changing plans, paying off the phone early, or taking another upgrade. Note whether credits stop and whether an unpaid device balance remains. A deal that works only if you keep service for a period should be valued on that basis, not as an unconditional discount.
- Check delivery and inspection risk. Record when the old phone must arrive, how the provider evaluates it, and whether a changed valuation can be accepted or rejected. Allow enough time to back up and prepare the old phone without relying on an unconfirmed estimate.
- Choose based on your likely behavior. If you expect to keep the required service and financing through the credit term, a promotion can be worth considering even if its value is not paid immediately. If you value flexibility or may leave, prioritize the value with fewer ongoing conditions and compare it against a realistic alternative rather than the promotional headline.
Use a worksheet
| Comparison field | What to write down |
|---|---|
| Old iPhone | Exact model, storage and stated condition |
| Quoted value | Amount, quote date and whether it is an estimate or confirmed value |
| Payment form | Immediate reduction, payment-method credit, gift/promotional card, device-payment credit or account-bill credit |
| Required service | Eligible plan and incremental cost for the required period |
| Financing | Term, remaining balance exposure and whether payoff affects credits |
| Trade-in logistics | Send-by or receipt deadline, shipping or store path, and validation process |
| Revaluation | What can change after inspection and whether you can decline the revised value |
| Early exit | Effect of cancellation, plan change, early payoff or early upgrade |
How Apple Trade In estimates and applies credit
Apple says the estimate depends on the device, model, manufacturer and condition. Treat the quote as conditional: Apple checks the phone after receiving it and can revise the value if its inspection differs from the information supplied. For online trades, Apple gives a 14-day arrival window after the new device arrives and estimates the overall online process at 2–3 weeks.
The payout depends on how you buy. With a full-price purchase, Apple says the verified credit is applied to the original payment method up to the new purchase price; value above that amount is issued as an Apple Gift Card. With monthly payment, Apple says the estimated credit is applied to the purchase price, subject to condition verification. If Apple finds a lower value after inspection, its stated process lets you accept the revision or reject it and have the old device returned, subject to Apple’s terms. Check those terms before sending the phone so you understand the return process for your transaction.
How carrier promotions can differ from market-value trade-ins
AT&T: distinguish the announcement from your offer
AT&T describes trade-in value through device offers, promotional cards and bill credits. Its page warns that some bill credits can stop if you pay an installment balance early or upgrade early, so include that possibility in your exit-scenario comparison. The applicable offer determines the qualifying device, account and plan conditions and the credit duration.

On September 10, 2026, AT&T announced up to $1,200 off an iPhone 18 Pro with an eligible trade-in described as being accepted “in any condition.” That is an advertised maximum for a particular promotion, not a guaranteed value for every phone or account. Confirm the live offer and its model, plan, financing, line-status and credit-duration requirements at checkout before treating the amount as yours.
Verizon: separate market value from promotional value
Verizon says a device’s market value depends on its model, memory and condition, and that a qualifying promotion may offer more than market value. Those are different forms of value: its iPhone trade-in FAQ describes a Verizon gift card or PayPal credit for market-value trades, while promotional value is distributed over the new device contract as a reduction to device payments.
Verizon’s support information says some promotions require an eligible plan; some existing-customer offers require the traded device to have been active on a Verizon account for 60 consecutive days. Credits may stop if service is canceled, the device is paid off early or an early upgrade occurs. These are offer-dependent conditions, so check which ones apply to the specific deal rather than assuming every promotion has the same rules.

T-Mobile: distinguish an Offer Price from a Promotional Offer
T-Mobile’s terms use “Offer Price” for a device purchase and “Promotional Offer” for a promotion. Depending on the transaction, credits may go toward a financing plan, down payment, new device or accessory purchase, or account bill. Do not combine those amounts without checking what the offer actually applies to and what you must do to qualify.
For a mailed trade-in, T-Mobile requires receipt by the trade-in expiration date and validation. Its terms say evaluation may adjust the price or promotional eligibility, and promotional credits depend on completing the offer requirements. Confirm the relevant expiration date and offer-specific requirements for your transaction; the general terms do not establish a universal deadline for every promotion.

Do not assume “trade-in accepted” means every phone condition earns the same amount. Apple’s estimate is checked after receipt. Verizon’s FAQ says qualifying devices may need to power on, have an uncracked functioning screen and have Activation Lock turned off. Apple instructs customers to turn off Find My before trade-in. The exact eligibility standard depends on the route and offer; read the program’s current condition rules before you commit.
Best Value
- Powerful Performance: Apple’s A18 Pro chip with a 6-core CPU, 6-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine for fast responsiveness and efficient multitasking.
- Brilliant Display: 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED with ProMotion technology (up to 120 Hz), Always-On display, True Tone, and high peak brightness for rich, smooth visuals.
- Pro-Level Camera System: Triple rear cameras — 48 MP Fusion main, 48 MP Ultra-Wide, and 12 MP telephoto with up to 5× optical zoom and advanced imaging features like Photonic Engine and Smart HDR.
- Natural Titanium Design: Premium aerospace-grade titanium build with a textured matte glass back and Ceramic Shield front for durability and elegant styling.
- Unlocked & 5G-Ready: Fully unlocked for use with major US carriers (supports eSIM) and future-ready 5G connectivity.
- Describe the phone accurately. Include visible damage and functional problems when answering condition questions. An estimate based on incorrect information may not survive inspection.
- Remove account locks as instructed. Apple says to turn off Find My; Verizon identifies Activation Lock being off among qualifying-device requirements for applicable offers. Make sure you can complete the required steps before mailing or handing over the device.
- Understand revaluation before shipping. Find out whether a lower post-inspection value changes eligibility, whether you can reject a revised amount, and how the device is returned if you do. Apple describes an accept-or-reject path for a reduced valuation, subject to its terms; T-Mobile says its evaluation can adjust price or promotional eligibility.
- Track the correct deadline. Apple’s online process uses the 14-day arrival window after the new phone arrives. T-Mobile’s mailed path requires receipt by the trade-in expiration date. Do not confuse a shipping date with a receipt deadline.
Which offer should you choose?
There is no universal best carrier or trade-in route in the available program terms. Your best option depends on the exact device, the offer active for your account, the plan you would choose anyway, and how likely you are to keep service and financing for the full credit period.
- Favor the more flexible route if you may change carriers, pay off the new phone or upgrade before a promotional term ends. Compare the value you can retain without those ongoing commitments.
- Consider the higher conditional promotion if you already want the qualifying plan and reasonably expect to meet its requirements through the full term. Calculate the added service cost and do not count credits you could lose as guaranteed savings.
- Wait for a firm inspection outcome where practical if condition uncertainty could change the value materially. With a mail-in trade, understand the return option before relinquishing the phone.
- Compare a separate sale or another trade-in quote if you want a market check. No market-wide typical value or universal discount can be inferred from these programs; obtain a current quote for your own model and condition.
Before placing the upgrade order, verify the exact offer in effect on that day. Promotions, qualifying plans, device eligibility, credit timing and return deadlines can change, and account-specific terms may differ from a general page. The official pages summarized here were accessed October 13, 2026; use the terms displayed for your own checkout and account as the final authority.
