IDBI Bank and HDB Financial Services are not interchangeable investments. IDBI Bank is an RBI-classified private-sector bank that funds loans mainly with deposits, while HDB Financial Services (HDBFS) is an RBI-registered lending non-banking financial company (NBFC) that funds its loan book with borrowings and other market sources. Compare them by business model, funding cost, asset quality, capital, profitability, ownership and same-date valuation—not by a single headline ratio.
The latest figures available here come from different reporting periods: IDBI Bank’s quarter ended 31 December 2024 and HDBFS’s financial year ended 31 March 2025. Refresh exchange prices, market capitalisation, book value and earnings from the latest filings immediately before making an investment decision.
1. Start with the structural difference: bank versus NBFC
IDBI Bank is a deposit-taking bank
IDBI Bank is regulated as a private-sector bank by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Its funding model includes retail and corporate deposits, including current and savings accounts (CASA), alongside other liabilities and equity. A bank’s balance sheet, liquidity requirements, capital ratios and profitability are therefore closely tied to deposit growth, deposit pricing and the spread between lending yields and funding costs.
IDBI Bank’s official profile says it has been categorized as a “Private Sector Bank” for regulatory purposes since 21 January 2019, after Life Insurance Corporation of India acquired 51% of its total paid-up equity share capital. That regulatory classification is important: a bank can accept deposits under the banking framework, whereas an NBFC cannot use a current account, savings account or demand-deposit franchise in the same way.

HDB Financial Services is a lending NBFC
HDBFS is an RBI-registered NBFC. It lends to customers and businesses but reports a different funding structure from a bank. Instead of presenting deposits and CASA as its central funding measures, it reports assets under management (AUM), borrowings, liquidity and the cost of funds. Its spreads depend on the rates it charges borrowers, the cost and tenor of its borrowings, operating expenses and credit losses.
Because the companies have different liabilities and regulatory frameworks, a bank’s CASA ratio, net interest margin (NIM) or deposit growth cannot be treated as a direct equivalent of an NBFC’s borrowing mix, spread or AUM growth. The first question is not “which has the better ratio?” but “what does this ratio mean for this type of institution?”
| Comparison area | IDBI Bank | HDB Financial Services |
|---|---|---|
| Institution type | RBI-classified private-sector bank | RBI-registered lending NBFC |
| Primary funding lens | Deposits, CASA, wholesale liabilities and equity | Borrowings, securitisation or assignment where applicable, liquidity and equity |
| Scale metric | Deposits and net advances | AUM and disbursements |
| Core profitability measures | NII, NIM, ROA, ROE, fee income and cost-to-income | Revenue, spreads, operating expenses, credit costs, ROA and ROE |
| Credit-risk measures | Gross NPA, net NPA, provision coverage, write-offs and restructured loans | Stage-3 or NPA assets, delinquency buckets, write-offs, provisions and recoveries |
| Liquidity and capital | Capital adequacy, CET1, liquidity coverage and regulatory buffers | Applicable NBFC capital ratios, liquidity coverage, asset-liability gaps and borrowing maturities |
2. Put the available figures on an aligned timeline
Do not combine a bank’s quarterly number with an NBFC’s full-year number and call the result a like-for-like comparison. Label every figure with its reporting date, unit and source. The figures below are useful starting points, but they are not a synchronized valuation snapshot.
| Company and period | Reported figure | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|
| IDBI Bank, quarter ended 31 December 2024 | Capital adequacy 21.98%; CET1 19.91% | Regulatory capital and highest-quality common equity buffer at that quarter-end |
| IDBI Bank, quarter ended 31 December 2024 | Gross NPA 3.57%; net NPA 0.18% | Reported stressed assets before and after provisions |
| IDBI Bank, quarter ended 31 December 2024 | Provision coverage 99.47% | Coverage of gross non-performing assets by provisions, subject to the bank’s stated calculation |
| IDBI Bank, quarter ended 31 December 2024 | Deposits ₹2,77,602 crore; net advances ₹2,00,944 crore | Deposit franchise and outstanding lending scale |
| HDBFS, financial year ended 31 March 2025 | Total disbursements ₹66,108 crore | Loans originated during the financial year, not the closing loan book |
| HDBFS, financial year ended 31 March 2025 | Total revenue ₹16,300 crore; profit before tax ₹2,928 crore; profit after tax ₹2,176 crore | Full-year operating income and earnings |
| HDBFS, financial year ended 31 March 2025 | AUM ₹1,07,262 crore | Assets managed or financed at year-end |
| HDBFS, financial year ended 31 March 2025 | Shareholder funds ₹15,820 crore | Equity base supporting the NBFC’s assets |
IDBI Bank’s figures are from its official Q3 FY2025 release, while HDBFS’s figures are from its FY2024-25 reporting. Obtain each company’s latest quarterly or annual filing before calculating growth rates or valuation multiples.

3. Compare growth without confusing flows and stocks
For IDBI Bank, track deposits and advances together
Review year-on-year and quarter-on-quarter growth in deposits and net advances. Rapid advances growth is more attractive when deposits, capital and asset quality keep pace. Check whether growth is broad-based across retail, agriculture, small business and corporate portfolios, or concentrated in a segment with higher expected losses.
Also examine net interest income (NII), NIM, fee income, return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE) and the cost-to-income ratio. A bank can grow its loan book while earnings weaken if deposit costs rise, yields fall, fee income slows or operating expenses increase. Separate reported growth caused by an acquisition, a one-time recovery or a change in accounting from recurring growth.
For HDBFS, separate AUM, disbursements and revenue
AUM is an end-of-period stock; disbursements are a period flow. A company can report high disbursements while AUM grows slowly if repayments, prepayments, sell-downs or write-offs are substantial. Compare AUM growth with disbursement growth, average ticket size, product mix, geographic concentration and repeat-customer share.

For profitability, follow revenue, interest or spread income, operating expenses, credit costs, profit before tax and profit after tax. Calculate margins on average AUM where the required averages are disclosed, rather than dividing full-year revenue by only the closing AUM. Check whether growth is funded by short-term borrowings, longer-term debt, securitisation or other sources and whether maturities match the assets being financed.

4. Test earnings quality and returns
Bank measures
- NIM: assesses the spread between interest earned and interest paid relative to earning assets. Read it with CASA and deposit repricing because a low-cost deposit base can support margins.
- ROA: shows profit generated per unit of average assets and is useful for comparing banks over time.
- ROE: shows profit relative to average equity. A high ROE is stronger when it comes from sustainable ROA and efficient capital use, not excessive leverage or a temporary fall in equity.
- Credit cost: measures provisions and impairment relative to loans or assets. Rising credit cost can erase the benefit of loan growth.
- Cost-to-income: indicates operating efficiency, but very low costs are not automatically positive if technology, collections or controls are underfunded.
NBFC measures
- Spread or net interest spread: compare lending yield with the weighted cost of borrowings.
- Operating expense ratio: assess whether branch, employee, technology and collection costs are scaling slower than AUM.
- Credit cost and loss rate: track provisions, write-offs and recoveries through the cycle, not just one year.
- ROA and ROE: use average AUM and average equity where available and compare with the risk and leverage profile.
- Funding concentration: review lender concentration, secured versus unsecured borrowing, fixed versus floating rates and maturity concentration.
HDBFS’s FY2024-25 profit after tax of ₹2,176 crore should therefore be read with its ₹1,07,262 crore AUM, ₹15,820 crore shareholder funds and the borrowing disclosures in the same annual report. It is not directly comparable with IDBI Bank’s quarterly profitability ratios without matching periods and definitions.
5. Examine asset quality beyond one NPA number
IDBI Bank’s reported position
For the quarter ended 31 December 2024, IDBI Bank reported gross NPA of 3.57%, net NPA of 0.18% and provision coverage of 99.47%. The gap between gross and net NPA indicates that provisions cover most of the reported gross problem assets, but it does not eliminate the need to examine recoveries, collateral values, write-offs, upgrades and fresh slippages.
Review the trend in gross and net slippages, restructured loans, write-offs, recoveries and special-mention accounts. Ask whether the improvement comes from genuine cash recovery, upgrades after demonstrated repayment, technical write-offs or the shrinking of a particular portfolio. Compare credit cost with the bank’s stated guidance and with the economic conditions affecting its borrowers.
HDBFS delinquency and NPA analysis
For HDBFS, inspect stage-3 or NPA assets, delinquency roll rates, provisions, write-offs, recoveries and restructured exposures. The company’s cited RBI framework describes special-mention-account ageing as up to 30 days, more than 30 to 60 days, and more than 60 to 90 days past due. An account classified as an NPA may be upgraded only after all interest and principal arrears are paid. That rule makes migration between ageing buckets and the quality of upgrades important indicators.

Do not compare HDBFS’s NPA percentage with IDBI Bank’s percentage unless the definitions, denominator, product mix and reporting date match. Consumer, commercial-vehicle, enterprise and housing-linked portfolios can have very different loss patterns even when their headline NPA ratios look similar.
6. Check capital, liquidity and funding resilience
IDBI Bank’s capital buffer
IDBI Bank reported capital adequacy of 21.98% and CET1 of 19.91% at 31 December 2024. Capital adequacy captures eligible capital against risk-weighted assets; CET1 focuses on the highest-quality common equity. Track both against the applicable minimums and the bank’s internal management buffer. Also assess how quickly capital would be consumed under higher credit losses or faster risk-weighted-asset growth.
HDBFS’s NBFC capital and liquidity
For HDBFS, retrieve the latest applicable NBFC capital-adequacy ratio, liquidity-coverage disclosures and asset-liability maturity tables. Examine the amount of unencumbered cash and liquid investments, committed undrawn lines, secured and unsecured debt, commercial paper, bank facilities and bond maturities. A profitable NBFC can still face stress if short-term liabilities mature faster than loan cash flows or if refinancing becomes expensive.
Compare borrowing costs with lending yields and test a downside case in which interest rates remain high, collections slow and wholesale funding spreads widen. The relevant question is whether liquidity remains adequate after planned disbursements and scheduled repayments—not simply whether the company reports cash on the balance sheet at year-end.

7. Understand ownership and the 2025 HDBFS IPO
IDBI Bank and LIC ownership
LIC’s acquisition of 51% of IDBI Bank’s paid-up equity capital led to the bank’s private-sector regulatory classification effective 21 January 2019. Read the current shareholding pattern, government or institutional ownership changes, board composition and any announced stake-sale or capital-raising plans. Ownership can influence strategic priorities, board oversight, capital allocation and the market’s assessment of future control.
HDBFS issue structure
HDBFS’s 2025 IPO was described in an HDFC Bank filed exhibit as a ₹2,500 crore fresh issue plus a ₹10,000 crore offer for sale by HDFC Bank. A fresh issue brings new capital into the company, subject to the stated use of proceeds; an offer for sale transfers shares from an existing holder and does not itself add cash to HDBFS. Read the prospectus and red herring prospectus for risk factors, intended use of fresh-issue proceeds, post-issue shareholding, related-party transactions and any lock-in or selling restrictions.
After listing, compare the actual post-issue ownership with the prospectus assumptions. Monitor whether the new capital supports growth, strengthens leverage and liquidity metrics, or merely accompanies a change in shareholder composition.

8. Use a date-matched valuation framework
Refresh the share price and shares outstanding on the same date for both companies. Then use the latest reported book value and earnings available by that date. Record the source date beside every multiple; a price-to-book ratio calculated with a later book value than the price is not a clean comparison.
| Measure | IDBI Bank application | HDBFS application | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price-to-book (P/B) | Market price divided by latest book value per share | Market price divided by latest NBFC book value per share | Does the premium reflect sustainable ROE and lower risk? |
| Price-to-earnings (P/E) | Use normalized earnings, not a one-time recovery | Use normalized PAT after considering credit costs | Are earnings through-cycle or unusually high? |
| ROE and ROA | Compare with capital adequacy, NIM and credit cost | Compare with leverage, spreads, funding cost and losses | Is the return generated without taking disproportionate risk? |
| Growth-adjusted value | Relate advances and earnings growth to deposits and capital | Relate AUM and earnings growth to borrowings and liquidity | Can growth be funded at an acceptable marginal cost? |
A lower P/B does not automatically mean a cheaper or safer investment. A discount may reflect weak returns, higher expected credit losses, governance concerns, expensive funding or limited growth. Conversely, a premium can be justified only if future ROE, asset quality and funding resilience support it.
9. Apply a practical decision process
- Set the investment objective. Decide whether you seek a steadier deposit-funded bank franchise, higher growth from an NBFC loan book, income, or long-term compounding. Your objective determines which risks deserve the most weight.
- Collect same-date documents. Download the latest annual and quarterly filings, investor presentations, shareholding patterns, capital disclosures and IPO documents. Note the reporting period and whether each number is consolidated or standalone.
- Build two separate scorecards. For IDBI Bank, include deposits, CASA, advances, NII, NIM, ROA, ROE, cost-to-income, gross and net NPA, provision coverage, CET1 and capital adequacy. For HDBFS, include AUM, disbursements, revenue, spreads, operating expenses, credit cost, stage-3 assets, write-offs, borrowing mix, liquidity and NBFC capital ratios.
- Stress the downside. Model slower loan growth, higher deposit or borrowing costs, elevated slippages, lower recoveries and a weaker refinancing market. Estimate the effect on earnings, capital and liquidity rather than relying on the base case.
- Check governance and ownership. Read related-party disclosures, auditor observations, board changes, promoter or institutional shareholding and the stated use of capital raised.
- Calculate valuation last. Use the latest same-date price, shares outstanding, book value and normalized earnings. Compare the multiple with the return and risk profile you have already established.
- Write a decision rule. For example: invest only if expected ROE exceeds your required return, capital remains comfortably above requirements under stress, asset-quality trends are improving and the valuation leaves room for error. If any condition fails, wait for better evidence or a lower price.
10. Red flags that should stop a rushed purchase
- Using IDBI Bank’s deposit or CASA metrics as though they were HDBFS funding metrics.
- Comparing a quarterly bank result with a full-year NBFC result without annualising or matching periods.
- Celebrating disbursement growth while AUM, collections or asset quality deteriorate.
- Focusing on net NPA without reviewing gross slippages, write-offs, recoveries and restructured accounts.
- Ignoring borrowing maturities, lender concentration or liquidity coverage at an NBFC.
- Assuming a high capital ratio will remain unchanged after rapid risk-weighted-asset or AUM growth.
- Using an old share price with a newly reported book value or earnings figure.
- Treating an IPO offer-for-sale amount as fresh capital available to HDBFS.
11. What to update before publishing or investing
The available figures do not provide synchronized prices, market capitalisations or valuation multiples for 15 October 2026, nor a complete FY2026 like-for-like comparison. Before acting, update both companies’ latest exchange filings and record:
- Share price, shares outstanding and market capitalisation on one clearly stated date.
- Latest book value per share, trailing and normalized earnings, P/B and P/E.
- Most recent deposits, advances, AUM, disbursements and funding mix.
- Current NIM or spread, ROA, ROE, operating costs and credit cost.
- Gross and net NPA or stage-3 assets, slippages, provisions, write-offs and recoveries.
- Capital adequacy, CET1 where applicable, liquidity coverage and maturity gaps.
- Current ownership, related-party disclosures and any announced capital raising or stake sale.
The decision is ultimately a risk-adjusted comparison: IDBI Bank’s deposit franchise and bank capital framework versus HDBFS’s lending growth, borrowing structure and NBFC liquidity risk. Whichever company you select, base the purchase price on current filings and a downside case rather than on the headline figures alone.
