Neither Home Depot nor Lowe’s is automatically the better place to buy home improvement supplies. Compare the same product specification at both retailers, then check the price and availability for your location, the full delivery cost, return terms, and any services your project requires. The better choice is the one that meets your project’s requirements at a workable total cost and schedule—not necessarily the one with the lower shelf price.
Start with the exact product your project requires
A useful comparison begins with an apples-to-apples match. A similar-looking item may differ in size, material, finish, included components, condition, or quantity. Those differences can affect both whether it works for the job and what the project will cost.
Record the specifications before checking prices
For each item on your list, note the brand and model when you have them, plus the dimensions, material, finish or other relevant specifications, condition, quantity, and what is included in the package. For building materials, compare the unit and amount as well as the headline price: a package count or coverage amount can make two apparently similar prices misleading. For products sold with accessories or components, check what is actually included rather than assuming the packages match.

If you cannot find the same model at both stores, treat the alternatives as different products until you have checked their specifications. A lower price for a different size or a package with fewer included parts is not a like-for-like saving. Write down the differences that matter to the project, and decide whether each alternative genuinely meets the same need before comparing its price.

Use Lowe’s price-match requirements as a comparison check
Lowe’s Price Promise says a qualifying match must be for an identical item that is in stock at another local retailer. The item must also be available to ship to the customer’s location. That makes the exact model and local availability important: a broadly similar product or an item that cannot be supplied to your location may not qualify. Eligibility is subject to the policy’s conditions and exclusions.
This price-match policy can help when you find a qualifying lower price, but it is not evidence that either chain generally has lower prices. Check the current policy for the specific purchase, and do not assume that a competitor’s price will be matched simply because the products look alike.
Compare the price you will actually pay
A shelf or search-result price is only one part of the purchase. The practical comparison is the cost of obtaining the required quantity at your address, using a fulfillment option that fits your timing. Delivery or shipping can change which option is less expensive, and an advertised item price does not establish the total for a particular location.

Build a location-specific total
For each retailer, check the item price for the required quantity and the delivery or shipping charge, if applicable. Include any other fees the retailer presents for the selected fulfillment method. Compare the same quantity, product specification, destination, and timing wherever possible. If one store can supply only a different quantity or an alternative product, record that as a difference rather than treating the totals as directly equivalent.
Lowe’s says its qualifying price promise includes shipping or delivery in the comparison. This matters when assessing an eligible price match: compare the delivered cost, not just the competitor’s listed item price. The policy also lists exclusions, including professional services and installation costs, custom products, clearance or damaged merchandise, selected promotions, third-party marketplace sellers, sales tax, and credit terms. The policy’s eligibility conditions still apply; a lower delivered total does not by itself guarantee a match.

Do not infer a chain-wide price winner
Prices and the costs of getting an item to you are tied to the product and destination. The available retailer policy information does not establish which chain is cheaper overall, nor does it provide a live price comparison for your shopping list. Check both retailers’ current listings for your location and compare the totals for the specific items you plan to buy. For a substantial order, repeat the calculation across the whole list: a small difference on one item may not determine which store offers the more workable overall purchase.
Check stock and fulfillment for the item and address
Availability is part of the comparison, not a detail to check after choosing a retailer. A price is useful only if the required item and quantity can be obtained in time. Home Depot lists scheduled delivery, appliance delivery and installation, curbside pickup, and in-store pickup among its fulfillment options. Which options, dates, and charges apply depend on the item and location, so confirm them for the actual product and ZIP code.
Compare the options that fit your project
Check whether each retailer offers a practical way to get the specific item: pickup, a scheduled delivery, or another option displayed for that product and address. Note the available date and any charge shown. If the project depends on receiving several items together, check whether the proposed fulfillment plans line up with the work schedule; separate dates may affect how useful an otherwise attractive price is.
Home Depot’s customer-service page also indexes resources for product availability, pickup, shipping and delivery, installation, tool and truck rental, returns, and price matching. An index identifies topics to investigate; it does not establish the exact terms, fees, or local availability of a particular service. Check the item-level details rather than assuming a listed service is offered for every product or address.
Make the decision using the stock you can confirm
Record the quantity shown as available or the date offered for each store, and verify that it corresponds to the product specification you selected. If the site does not make a clear promise about the quantity or timing you need, treat availability as unconfirmed and contact the retailer or check the store’s current information before relying on it. Do not treat a general statement that a service exists as confirmation that it is available for your order.

Read the return terms for the product category
Return policies can change the risk of buying the wrong size, ordering too much, or discovering that a product does not suit the project. Check the terms for the item before purchase, including the allowed return period, condition requirements, proof-of-purchase requirements, and any category-specific exception. Do not apply a general return window to every product.

Lowe’s says most new, unused merchandise can be returned within 90 days with proof of purchase. Its return information also lists shorter periods for some categories: 48 hours for major appliances and several specified products, and 30 days for categories that include liquid paint, electronics, and certain equipment. These are retailer policy terms, not a guarantee that every item falls within the general window. Check the current item-specific exception before buying.
Verify Home Depot’s terms instead of assuming they match
Home Depot has an official return-policy page, but the policy details available here do not establish its current return windows or exceptions. For that reason, do not infer that its terms are the same as Lowe’s or quote a general window without checking the current policy for the product. Confirm the period and requirements that apply to your item before treating returns as a meaningful advantage for either store.
Make returnability part of the purchase decision
If measurements, quantities, or compatibility are uncertain, find out what the applicable terms require before ordering. A product with a shorter category-specific window may leave less time to resolve a project issue than an item covered by a general period. Keep proof of purchase and any product or order information the retailer says is needed. The key comparison is not simply which policy sounds more generous in general; it is which terms apply to the exact item you are considering.
For installation work, compare scope—not just the quote
If the purchase includes installation, a price comparison is meaningful only when the estimates describe substantially comparable work. Lowe’s Lowest Install Project Price Guarantee applies to qualifying installation-service project estimates. Its policy calls for substantially similar products, materials, specifications, installation standards, quality, performance, and warranty coverage. Lowe’s determines whether estimates are comparable, and the policy includes conditions and exclusions.

Line up the written project details
Before comparing installation estimates, put the proposed scope and specifications side by side. Check that the products and materials, installation standards, quality and performance expectations, and warranty coverage are substantially similar. A quote that leaves out part of the work or specifies different materials is not necessarily a lower price for the same project.
For some quoted projects, Lowe’s policy requires documentation with project details and a recent estimate. Check the current terms to see what documentation and eligibility rules apply to your project. A qualifying price guarantee is not a general promise to match every installer’s quote, and the policy’s comparability decision and exclusions matter.
Separate product price from installation price
Lowe’s Price Promise lists professional services and installation costs among its exclusions. Its separate installation-project guarantee is the relevant policy to investigate when comparing qualifying installation estimates. Do not treat a lower product price as proof of a lower installed-project cost, or assume that an installation estimate qualifies simply because its total is lower.

A short written comparison reduces the chance of choosing on a headline price while overlooking a mismatch or a delivery constraint. Make one row for each product or project component, and record the same fields for both retailers. If a value is not available or confirmed, mark it as unknown rather than filling it in by assumption.

Resolve unknowns before placing the order
If one retailer’s listing does not show a fee, return exception, or fulfillment date, do not treat the missing detail as zero cost or a favorable term. Verify it through the retailer’s current product and policy information. This is especially important when delivery timing affects the project, an item may have a shortened return period, or the purchase depends on installation.

Use this sequence for a single item, a materials list, or a project that includes services. It keeps product fit and practical availability ahead of a headline-price comparison.
- Define the requirement. Write down the item’s needed dimensions, material, quantity, model or other project specifications. For installation, describe the scope and required products and standards.
- Find comparable options. Check both retailers for the same item where possible. If the model differs, compare the relevant specifications and identify any differences before treating the alternatives as substitutes.
- Check location-specific availability. Use the item and your location to confirm stock or the offered fulfillment date. Review pickup or delivery choices and charges for the quantity you need.
- Calculate the delivered total. Compare the same quantity and destination, adding shipping or delivery and any applicable fees shown. Keep item cost separate from installation or other services.
- Verify the return terms. Look up the exact product category and confirm its window and requirements. Do not assume that a general policy applies to an exception category or that the other retailer has the same terms.
- Compare installation estimates separately. Align written scope, specifications, materials, standards, quality, performance, and warranty coverage, then check the current eligibility conditions for any price guarantee.
- Choose based on the constraints that matter. If the prices are close, prioritize the product that fits the specification, is available when required, has workable fulfillment and return terms, and—where needed—comes with a comparable written installation scope.
Which is cheaper, Home Depot or Lowe’s?
There is no established chain-wide answer. Does Lowe’s price match Home Depot?
