To compare graphics settings fairly, capture the same scene and camera view at the same output resolution, change one setting at a time, and preserve the original screenshots. Record each game’s exact option labels and values: “High” in one game is not a standard equivalent to “High” in another. Screenshots show visual differences; use separate, repeatable benchmark runs to measure performance cost.
Set up a fair screenshot comparison
- Choose a repeatable scene. Use a built-in benchmark, replay, photo mode, or fixed save and location when available. Keep the camera position and view consistent. A different scene can change lighting, geometry, or effects and make it unclear whether the setting caused the difference.
- Lock the capture conditions. Keep the game build, output resolution, display mode, render scale or upscaler, field of view, camera position, and capture route the same between shots. Note any condition you cannot match.
- Change one option at a time. Capture a baseline, change one setting, then recapture the same view. If the game requires a restart for the change to take effect, restart before taking the second screenshot. NVIDIA’s Control graphics guide, for example, says its Texture Resolution test required a full restart.
- Preserve the originals. Use original-resolution, lossless images when possible. Do not resize one image differently or apply post-processing to only one side. If you make a crop or side-by-side panel, use identical scale and crop boundaries and keep the originals available.
- Label the evidence. Include the game and build, exact setting and values, output resolution, scaling and anti-aliasing modes, GPU and driver when relevant, and capture method. Across different games, describe what is visible rather than treating preset names as equivalent quality levels.
Choose image details that can reveal the setting
Inspect parts of the scene where the setting should make a difference. A carefully selected crop is often more useful than a full-screen image when the change is subtle.
- Textures: compare fine surface detail at the same distance and viewing angle.
- Level of detail: inspect distant geometry and transitions where objects appear or change detail.
- Shadows and ambient occlusion: look at shadow edges and contact shadows, choosing a scene where those effects are visible. NVIDIA’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider graphics guide illustrates visible contact-shadow differences in its ambient-occlusion comparison.
- Reflections and volumetrics: use a scene with reflective surfaces, fog, or other relevant effects; otherwise the setting may have little visible evidence in the chosen frame.
- Anti-aliasing and image stability: inspect fine edges for aliasing or shimmer, but remember a still image cannot fully show temporal behavior. For ghosting, shimmering in motion, or motion clarity, add a short matched video or explicitly limit the conclusion to the still frame.
NVIDIA’s game-specific Control guide presents screenshot comparisons and performance charts for options including reflections, shadows, texture resolution, and ray-traced effects. These examples are useful for choosing what to inspect, not a universal cross-game testing standard.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not treat settings across games as a shared scale
There is no common cross-game scale established by the cited guidance. A “High” preset in one game does not prove it renders at the same quality, resolution, or performance cost as “High” in another. Report each game’s own menu label and value, then compare the visible result and measured performance. If hardware or output resolution differs, identify the mismatch rather than presenting the results as directly equivalent.
Measure performance separately from appearance
A screenshot documents an image, not the cost of producing it. Pair the visual comparison with results from a repeatable benchmark or gameplay sequence, and record the game build, GPU and driver, resolution, graphics API if known, and relevant options.
- Average FPS is the average frames per second. 1% low FPS is the average of the slowest one percent of frames; NVIDIA’s FrameView 1.7 User Guide explains that a 1% low closer to the average can indicate a more consistent experience.
- FrameView 1.7’s benchmark summary includes captured output resolution and graphics API. Keep measurement conditions consistent and report the conditions with the results.
- Record V-Sync status and keep it consistent across runs. FrameView notes that V-Sync limits displayed frame rate to monitor refresh, so it does not show the hardware’s full performance potential; turning it off can permit tearing. This is a measurement choice, not a recommendation for ordinary play.
Game-specific reporting can add useful context. CD PROJEKT RED’s Cyberpunk 2077 Patch 1.62 announcement (April 7, 2023) says the benchmark results screen was updated to display PC specifications, GPU driver version, and selected settings. Those details describe that patch, not a feature guaranteed in other games.

Check the screenshot capture path when upscaling is enabled
Record whether the image comes from the game, a GPU overlay, or external capture. The saved screenshot may not represent the final displayed output in every configuration. NVIDIA’s November 2021 Image Scaling article says software capture methods may record the lower pre-upscaled resolution rather than the target native resolution because NVIDIA Image Scaling is performed by the GPU. In that documented context, NVIDIA says GeForce Experience Alt+F1 screenshots are supported and names the Elgato 4K60 PRO MK.2 capture card as an interim capture option. This is specific to NVIDIA Image Scaling guidance from 2021; verify the current behavior for your GPU, upscaler, and capture application rather than generalizing it to all systems.
The same 2021 article describes Image Scaling as spatial and non-temporal and contrasts it with DLSS’s use of temporal information. Treat that as NVIDIA’s description of the technologies discussed there, not as a neutral ranking of every upscaler.

For documenting a web page in a comparison or guide, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL through one GET request. It is not a replacement for an in-game capture route when comparing game graphics; use the workflow above for that. ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL and returns a screenshot or PDF, and its website screenshot API and MCP server can also help capture web-based reference material.

Common comparison problems and fixes
- The image changed, but the setting’s effect is unclear: recapture the same scene and camera angle, and change only one option between shots.
- The setting appears not to have changed: check whether it needs a restart, whether the intended value was applied, and whether the selected scene actually shows the effect.
- The two images look soft or differently framed: confirm output resolution, render scale, field of view, crop, and resize history. Compare the preserved originals.
- The screenshot looks lower resolution than the display: check whether upscaling is active and whether the capture route records pre-upscaled output. Verify the behavior for the specific setup.
- Performance numbers conflict with the visual comparison: confirm that benchmark runs used the same GPU, driver, resolution, game build, relevant settings, and V-Sync condition. Do not infer frame-rate cost from a still image.
- Motion artifacts are missing from the evidence: a static screenshot cannot establish how shimmer, ghosting, or motion clarity behaves. Use a matched video or narrow the claim to what the still image shows.
