Compare mining companies by project stage, reserve and resource quality, technical assumptions, unit costs, capital needs, and execution risk—not by headline ounces, tonnes, or a single “cheap” share price. A producing gold miner with audited sales is not directly comparable with a copper explorer reporting an inferred resource.
Use each company’s latest annual report, quarterly filing, reserve statement, and technical report. Record the reporting date, ownership basis, metal units, and issuer definitions before drawing any conclusion. The process below is due diligence, not a personal investment recommendation.
Start with the company’s stage and metal exposure
The first comparison is not cost; it is what the company actually does today. Classify each issuer as a producer, developer, explorer, or a mixed business, then identify its primary metal and the ownership share of each material asset.

A producer has operating history to examine: tonnes processed, payable metal sold, realized prices, cash costs, all-in sustaining costs (AISC), sustaining capital, operating cash flow, and guidance. History does not remove risk, but it gives you evidence about grades, recoveries, downtime, inflation and management’s ability to deliver a plan.

Developer
A developer depends on a feasibility or pre-feasibility study, permitting, construction financing and commissioning. Its projected production and costs are assumptions rather than observed results. Examine the study date, engineering level, contingency, construction schedule, infrastructure requirements and funding plan.
Explorer
An explorer may report a mineral resource without a mine plan, permit or demonstrated economic case. Exploration success can expand geological knowledge, but an attractive resource headline does not establish that a mine can be built profitably.
Mixed businesses and ownership
Many issuers combine operating mines, development projects and exploration ground. Separate each asset in your notes. A company may report 100% of a project’s resources but receive only its attributable share of production or cash flow after a joint-venture partner’s interest. Use attributable production and attributable costs when available, and state the ownership basis explicitly.

Separate mineral reserves from mineral resources
Reserve and resource categories answer different questions. A mineral resource is a concentration of potentially economic material supported by geological evidence. A mineral reserve is the economically mineable part of a measured or indicated resource after applying modifying factors such as mining, processing, legal, environmental, social and governmental considerations.
U.S. Gold’s SEC-filed technical report states: “Mineral Resources that are not Mineral Reserves have not demonstrated economic viability.” The same report cautions that there is no certainty that all or any part of a resource will convert to reserves. Treat inferred resources as the least certain category; they generally require additional drilling before they can support mine planning.
Record the categories separately
| Item | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Proven and probable reserves | Tonnage, grade, contained and recoverable metal, effective date | Closest disclosed measure to an economically mineable inventory, subject to study assumptions and execution |
| Measured and indicated resources | Tonnage, grade, contained metal, effective date | Geological confidence is higher than inferred, but material may not be economically mineable |
| Inferred resources | Tonnage, grade, contained metal, drilling status | Useful exploration information, but conversion and economic viability are uncertain |
| Relationship between tables | Whether resources are inclusive or exclusive of reserves | Prevents double-counting the same material |
Do not add a company’s reserve ounces to its total resource ounces unless the technical report clearly says the tables are exclusive. Also preserve the effective date: a resource estimate from an older drill campaign is not a current operating forecast.
Read the technical assumptions behind every estimate
Headline contained metal is an output of a model. The inputs can change the reported inventory, mine life and economics even when the geology is unchanged.

Commodity prices and exchange rates
Higher assumed prices can make lower-grade material pass a cut-off test; lower prices can remove it. Currency assumptions affect labor, energy and contractor costs. U.S. Gold’s 2026 technical report selected $3,000 per ounce gold, $4.40 per pound copper and $35 per ounce silver for resource reporting. Its reserve assumptions were $2,100 per ounce gold and $4.10 per pound copper. These are report inputs, not spot prices or forecasts.
Recovery and metallurgy
Recovery is the proportion of metal extracted into a saleable product. It varies by ore domain, mineralogy, plant design and operating conditions. U.S. Gold lists copper recoveries of 22% for oxide, 75% for mixed and 90% for sulfide material. Those project-specific estimates cannot be generalized to another mine. Check whether a study models separate domains, blending, deleterious elements, concentrate payability and treatment or refining charges.
Cut-off grade and mine design
A cut-off grade determines which blocks are counted as potentially economic. It depends on price, recovery, mining and processing cost, royalties and other charges. Open-pit studies may also depend on strip ratio and pit optimization; underground studies may depend on dilution, recovery, development metres and geotechnical constraints. Compare cut-off grades only after confirming that the underlying prices and cost assumptions are on a comparable basis.
Modifying factors
Review water, power, roads, tailings capacity, land access, permits, community agreements, labor availability and closure obligations. A technically sound resource can still face a long approval path or expensive infrastructure. The technical report’s qualified-person sign-off and limitations describe what was—and was not—demonstrated.

Gold and copper use different units and cost conventions. Gold is commonly reported in dollars per troy ounce; copper in dollars per pound. A raw gold cost cannot be ranked against a raw copper cost. Even two figures for the same metal may measure different production, sales, ownership or cost components.
Cash cost and AISC
Cash cost usually captures direct site-level costs after specified credits, while AISC generally adds sustaining capital and selected corporate or rehabilitation items. Both are issuer-defined measures. OceanaGold says in its Q2 2026 results that “Cash Costs are a common financial performance measure in the gold mining industry; however, it has no standard meaning under IFRS.” Barrick identifies its copper C1 cash-cost and AISC measures as non-GAAP and lists the components included in copper AISC.
Always read the reconciliation to IFRS or GAAP and the definition table. Check whether the numerator includes royalties, by-product credits, treatment and refining charges, inventory adjustments, corporate costs, exploration, reclamation or sustaining capital.

Illustrative reported figures, kept in their original context
| Issuer and period | Metric | Reported figure | Context |
|---|---|---|---|
| OceanaGold Corporation, three months ended June 30, 2026 | Gold AISC | $2,151 per ounce | Q2 2026 issuer measure; definition and reconciliation apply |
| OceanaGold Corporation, three months ended June 30, 2026 | Gold cash cost | $1,362 per ounce | Q2 2026 issuer measure; not an IFRS-standardized figure |
| Barrick Mining Corporation, three months ended June 30, 2026 | Copper AISC | $3.95 per pound | Q2 2026 non-GAAP issuer measure |
| Barrick Mining Corporation, three months ended June 30, 2026 | Copper C1 cash cost | $2.47 per pound | Q2 2026 non-GAAP issuer measure |
These examples are not a peer ranking: they involve different metals, companies and definitions. Use them to see why units, period and reconciliation must travel with every number.
Normalize the denominator
- Use the same period: quarter, year to date or full year.
- Distinguish production from sales. A mine can produce metal that is sold in a later period.
- Confirm payable metal and treatment or refining deductions for concentrates.
- Use attributable ounces or pounds when ownership is shared.
- Check by-product credits. A gold mine producing copper or silver may show a lower net gold cost after credits.
- Separate continuing operations from a sold, suspended or ramping asset.
- Check whether the figure is a mine-site measure, a consolidated company measure or a guidance range.
Examine revenue quality and exposure to prices
Production volume alone does not determine cash generation. Compare realized prices with benchmark prices, then inspect hedging, streaming or royalty arrangements, concentrate payability and customer concentration. A producer with large copper output may have materially different exposure if much of its production is hedged or subject to fixed-price contracts.
For gold, review ounces sold, grade, recovery, reserve replacement and the split between open-pit and underground operations. For copper, review payable pounds, concentrate grade, smelter terms, by-product credits and whether the company sells concentrate or refined cathode. Do not treat a resource-reporting price as a forecast of revenue.
Separate sustaining capital from growth capital
Sustaining capital keeps existing operations running: waste stripping, underground development, replacement equipment, tailings work and plant maintenance. Growth or project capital expands capacity, develops a new deposit or builds a new facility. A low AISC can coexist with substantial growth spending that is excluded from the sustaining metric.
Questions for the latest financial statements
- How much cash and undrawn liquidity does the company report?
- When do debt maturities, covenants or mandatory repayments occur?
- Can operating cash flow fund sustaining capital at the stated commodity assumptions?
- What construction or expansion commitments remain, and what contingency is available?
- Would the plan require equity issuance, a streaming transaction, a joint venture or additional debt?
- Are reclamation, closure and environmental liabilities recognized and funded?
For a developer, compare initial capital, sustaining capital, working capital and schedule contingency with available funding. A feasibility-study return metric is not a guarantee: delays, inflation, financing costs and permitting changes can alter the outcome.

Assess execution and jurisdiction risk
Read the risk factors and technical report rather than assigning a generic country score. Consider permitting status, water rights, power reliability, roads and ports, tax and royalty terms, land access, community and Indigenous agreements, labor relations, security, environmental standards and closure requirements.
Construction and ramp-up
New mines often face commissioning delays, lower-than-designed throughput, grade variability and unplanned capital. Look for construction progress, procurement dependencies, commissioning sequence and the assumptions used for ramp-up. A study that assumes immediate nameplate production is less conservative than one that models a staged ramp.

Operating and environmental liabilities
For producers, inspect incident history, tailings facilities, reclamation estimates and water-management obligations. For developers, identify permits that are obtained, pending or subject to appeal. These factors can affect schedule and cash requirements even when the orebody is attractive.
A repeatable six-step comparison workflow
- Map the business. From the latest annual report and quarterly results, list each material asset, metal, ownership share, stage and current production status.
- Capture the inventory. Locate the latest reserve and resource statement. Record category, tonnage, grade, contained metal, effective date and whether resources include or exclude reserves.
- Read assumptions first. In the technical report, note metal prices, exchange rates, recoveries, costs, royalties, cut-off grades, strip ratio, payability and modifying factors before using any headline total.
- Normalize operating metrics. Compare gold with gold per ounce or copper with copper per pound, using the same period, sales or production basis and attributable ownership. Copy the issuer’s definition and reconciliation.
- Test affordability. Separate sustaining from growth capital, then compare liquidity, debt maturities, expected spending and potential funding needs.
- Write the risks beside the upside. Pair a resource expansion with conversion uncertainty, a low cost with its by-product and ownership basis, and production guidance with permitting, grade and ramp-up risks.
Build a comparison sheet that exposes weak claims
A spreadsheet or note template makes omissions visible. Use one row per asset and columns for:

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Ranking by contained metal
Problem: A large inferred resource is treated as future production.
Correction: Start with reserves, study status, recovery and permitting; show resources separately.
Comparing gold and copper costs directly
Problem: A dollar-per-ounce figure is placed beside a dollar-per-pound figure as if one were cheaper.
Correction: Compare within the same metal and unit, then examine margin against the relevant realized price.
Using AISC as a universal accounting number
Problem: Issuer-defined costs are assumed to be identical.
Correction: Read each definition, included items, by-product credits and reconciliation to IFRS or GAAP.
Ignoring ownership
Problem: 100% project production is compared with a partner’s attributable ounces.
Correction: Put ownership in the column heading and use attributable figures consistently.

Mixing guidance and actuals
Problem: A full-year forecast is compared with another company’s completed quarter.
Correction: Label actual, guidance and year-to-date figures separately, with publication dates.
Treating a study return as a guarantee
Problem: A feasibility-study margin is read as an expected investor return.
Correction: Stress prices, recovery, capital, schedule and funding, and identify which assumptions are most sensitive.
How to update the analysis
Mining data ages quickly. Quarterly cost figures are snapshots, and technical estimates have effective dates. Refresh the latest annual and quarterly filings, reserve statements, technical reports, production guidance, debt disclosures and commodity assumptions before making a decision. Preserve the period, units, ownership basis and issuer definition whenever you replace a number.
Also check whether a revised mine plan, acquisition, sale, impairment, permitting decision or financing has changed the project. A resource estimate can remain geologically valid while its economic assumptions become outdated.
What a defensible conclusion looks like
A useful comparison does not end with “Company A is better.” It states what is known and what remains conditional: for example, a producer may offer observable operating history but carry grade, cost and jurisdiction risk; a developer may offer project growth but require permits and substantial financing; an explorer may offer geological upside without demonstrated economics.
Write the conclusion in terms of evidence: reserve confidence, assumption sensitivity, cost definition, capital affordability and execution milestones. Keep valuation and portfolio suitability as separate questions requiring current market data and an assessment of your own objectives and risk tolerance.
