Do not choose between critic reviews and player scores as if one group is automatically right. They are different evidence systems. Before buying, identify what each score measures, how it is calculated, who was allowed to submit reviews, how many reviews are included, and whether the comments describe the exact platform and current version you plan to play. A gap between scores is a prompt to investigate expectations, updates, performance, or a controversy—not proof that either side is wrong.
What a critic score and a player score actually tell you
A critic score usually summarizes professional reviews published during a defined review period. A player score summarizes recommendations or ratings from people who purchased or played the game under a platform’s rules. The two groups may evaluate different parts of the experience and may even use incompatible scales.
For example, Metacritic converts critic review scores to a 0–100 scale and aggregates the scores supplied by publications. Its methodology describes the resulting Metascore as a weighted aggregation, not a single critic’s opinion. Steam’s user-review summary is fundamentally a categorization based on the percentage of positive recommendations, with additional factors affecting how reviews are calculated and displayed, as explained in Steam Support’s user-review guidance. A Steam percentage and a 0–100 critic average are not interchangeable numbers.

- Critic reviews: How did professional reviewers judge the design, writing, art, mechanics, technical state and overall value at the time they played the review build?
- Player reviews: How do owners describe long-term use, updates, matchmaking, bugs, monetization, community conditions and day-to-day enjoyment?
- Your decision: Do the specific strengths and problems reported by either group matter for your platform, edition, hardware, play style and budget?
The most useful review is not the one with the highest authority. It is the one whose evidence matches the purchase you are considering.

Start by matching the exact game you will buy
Before looking at any number, write down the product you are evaluating. A title may have separate releases for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch or cloud services; a standard edition may differ from a deluxe edition; and a remake, remaster or expansion can share a name with an older release. Reviews for another version may not answer your question about performance, controls, features or included content.
- Platform: Identify the exact console, operating system or storefront.
- Edition: Check whether the page is for the base game, a bundle, an early-access package, a remaster or a version with downloadable content.
- Release state: Note whether comments refer to launch, early access, a major patch or the current build.
- Play mode: Decide whether you need solo play, local co-op, online multiplayer or a healthy player population.
Keep this identity fixed while comparing. A critic review of a console build and a player review of a poorly optimized PC port can produce a large score gap without either being misleading.
Understand the scales before comparing numbers

Metacritic’s own game-score guidance says publications are generally near-unanimous that scores below 50 indicate a negative review, while upper-70s or higher usually indicate a game that is unequivocally good. Those are conventions described for game reviews on Metacritic, not universal rules for every score system. A 75 on one site and a “Mostly Positive” label on another still require context.

A headline score hides its distribution. Record the number of critic reviews and player reviews shown, if the page provides it. A small group can move sharply when only a few additional reviews arrive; a large group generally gives you more evidence about recurring experiences, although volume does not make every review relevant to your situation.
Read both ends of the written evidence
Open several positive and negative reviews instead of sorting only by the highest or lowest rating. Look for repeated, concrete observations: frame-rate drops in a named area, missing accessibility options, a strong story, intrusive monetization, unreliable matchmaking or a progression system that becomes repetitive after many hours. Separate specific descriptions from one-line reactions that provide no reason.

Look for agreement inside disagreement
Two groups can disagree on the final score while agreeing on individual facts. Critics may praise combat and art direction while players report crashes after a patch. Players may celebrate a long-term community while critics object to a slow opening. Shared observations are more useful than the rank of either aggregate.
Verify who is eligible to submit a review
Review eligibility changes what a score means. Steamworks documentation states that reviews posted from an account that purchased the game on Steam and played it count toward that game’s review score. This rule is specific to Steam and should not be generalized to every user-score site. Read the current Steamworks user-review documentation when eligibility is important to your decision.

PlayStation’s UK reviews policy says users who acquired a digital game through their PlayStation account can review it. The policy also says ratings or reviews are not available for all products and may be limited in some regions. That is a UK policy, not a guarantee for every PlayStation territory. Consult the policy for the relevant region at PlayStation’s UK reviews-policy page.
Other stores may use different purchase verification, ownership, playtime or moderation rules. If a site does not explain eligibility clearly, treat its aggregate as less precise evidence about verified owners and put more weight on detailed, platform-matched comments.
Compare launch-period evidence with the current game
Games change. Patches can improve performance, rebalance mechanics, add content, alter monetization or reduce an online population’s problems. Conversely, an update can introduce bugs or make a previously optional system central to progression. A launch review and a comment written years later may describe different products.

Steam says eligible games released more than 45 days earlier may show a recent review score when enough recent reviews exist. Its review page can therefore provide a recent summary alongside the lifetime score. The 45-day threshold and the recent-score feature are Steam-specific; availability depends on the game meeting the platform’s conditions.
- Record the lifetime score and review count.
- Check whether a recent score is displayed and note its date range or heading.
- Sort written reviews by recent date.
- Look for references to the latest patch, driver, console update or server season.
- Discard comments that clearly describe a different build unless you are investigating launch history.
Do not assume that an old negative review is still accurate, and do not assume that a new positive review proves every launch problem is fixed. Look for repeated, current evidence tied to the issue you care about.
Why critic and player scores diverge
A score gap has several plausible explanations. Treat each as a hypothesis to test against the actual reviews rather than as a rule about critics or players.
Different review windows
Critics often publish around release using a review build and a limited amount of play time. Players may evaluate the game after dozens or hundreds of hours, multiple patches, seasonal content or endgame systems. A launch-period opinion can remain valid for design quality while no longer describing technical performance.
Different criteria
A critic may weigh pacing, originality, narrative structure and presentation heavily. A player may care most about replayability, matchmaking, mod support, grind, controller feel or whether friends can join reliably. Neither weighting is neutral; it reflects a different use case.

Different expectations
Marketing, a previous entry in a series, an early-access roadmap or a popular feature can set expectations that are not visible in a score. Players who expected a simulation may react negatively to arcade mechanics, while critics who judged the game on its own terms may be satisfied. Search the written comments for the expectation that drove the reaction.
Platform and hardware differences
Resolution, frame rate, load times, input latency, crashes and accessibility options can vary by platform. A critic’s test machine may not resemble your hardware. Filter player comments for your console model, graphics card, operating-system version and controller or keyboard setup.
Long-term service conditions
Online games can be enjoyable at launch and frustrating later because of queue times, server stability, moderation or monetization changes. Conversely, a weak launch can improve after substantial updates. Current player evidence is especially important when the game depends on a live service.
How to investigate a possible review bomb
Valve describes a review bomb as a large volume of reviews arriving in a compressed period with the intent of lowering a score. Its historical explanation notes that such activity can make the aggregate less useful as a guide to future purchaser satisfaction and discusses treatment of off-topic bombs. Read the explanation at Valve’s review-bombing policy article, then check how the current store page presents the game.

Review-bomb signals include:
- A sudden, unusually concentrated burst of negative or positive reviews.
- Repeated wording, slogans or references to an external dispute rather than the game.
- A sharp break between the lifetime graph and the recent period.
- Comments that do not identify a gameplay, performance, service or purchasing problem.
- A platform-wide or publisher dispute that appears in reviews for unrelated products.
These signals do not make every review in the burst false. A dispute can involve a legitimate change to pricing, ownership, access or promised features, and those consequences may matter to a buyer. Separate off-topic expressions from comments that explain how the event affects the product you would receive.

Use a three-part test
- Timing: Did the score move during a narrow, identifiable period?
- Relevance: Do the comments discuss the game or mainly an external controversy?
- Corroboration: Do independent, detailed reviews confirm the underlying product problem?
If timing is concentrated, relevance is low and corroboration is absent, discount the aggregate for purchase decisions but still check whether the platform has separated or annotated the activity. If comments describe a real feature removal, outage or policy that affects your ownership, treat that information as relevant even when it began as a coordinated campaign.

- Define the purchase. Write down the exact title, platform, edition, region and intended play mode.
- Name each scale. Label one figure as a critic aggregation, recommendation percentage, star rating or another format. Never compare unlabeled numbers.
- Capture counts and dates. Note how many reviews contribute, when the scores were updated and whether they describe launch or the current version.
- Check eligibility. Read the store’s policy to learn whether reviews require purchase, digital ownership, playtime or another condition.
- Compare recent and lifetime evidence. On Steam, look for both summaries when the recent score is available. On other services, use date filters or current comments where offered.
- Read reasons from both directions. Select several detailed positive and negative reviews and list the concrete claims they make.
- Match claims to your setup. Keep only issues relevant to your hardware, accessibility needs, preferred genre, tolerance for grind, online requirements and budget.
- Investigate a gap. Test whether the difference is explained by review timing, platform, expectations, long-term use, an update or a controversy.
- Choose an action. Buy now when the evidence fits your priorities; wait for a patch or more current reviews when a central risk is unresolved; or choose another game when a specific, corroborated problem conflicts with your needs.
Turn review reasons into a buyer-specific decision

Common mistakes that produce bad buying decisions
Subtracting scores
Subtracting a Steam recommendation percentage from a critic score creates a number with no defined meaning because the scales and aggregation methods differ. Describe the direction and reason for the disagreement instead.
Using the loudest review as the typical experience
A dramatic story can be genuine without being common. Check whether several independent reviews report the same condition and whether they refer to your version.

A score based on a small number of reviews can move quickly. A large count does not guarantee relevance, but it gives you a broader distribution to inspect. Always pair the headline with the count and written evidence.
Mixing editions or ports
Do not apply a console performance complaint to a PC purchase, or a deluxe-edition content review to the base game, without confirming the underlying product is the same.
Assuming “verified” means “correct”
Purchase eligibility can show that someone acquired the game under a platform’s rule; it does not prove that their hardware, expectations or conclusions match yours. Verification is context, not a substitute for reading reasons.
Confusing controversy with irrelevance
An external dispute may be unrelated to gameplay yet still affect access, pricing, ownership or trust. Decide which consequences matter to you instead of automatically ignoring or accepting every review in the event.

Questions to answer on the store page
- Is this the exact platform and edition I intend to buy?
- What does the displayed score measure: average, recommendation percentage or category?
- How many critic or player reviews contribute to it?
- Can I see recent feedback separately from lifetime feedback?
- Who is allowed to submit reviews on this service and in my region?
- Do detailed comments mention my hardware, online needs or accessibility requirements?
- Are negative reviews about the game itself, a current technical problem or an external event?
- Has the game changed enough that launch reviews no longer describe the current build?
Bottom line: use scores to find evidence, not to outsource the decision
Critic and player scores answer different questions. Start with the scale and eligibility rules, then check counts, dates, version and platform. Read the recurring reasons on both sides, investigate sudden review bursts without dismissing legitimate criticism, and filter every finding through the way you will actually play. Buy, wait or skip based on the specific evidence that affects your purchase—not on a comparison of two numbers that were never designed to be equivalent.
