To find cheaper fuel nearby, search a participating comparison app or website by your location and the fuel type your vehicle needs. Compare the price per litre and its update time, then weigh any saving against the extra distance and time to reach the forecourt. UK Fuel Finder data is shared with third-party services, but listings can lag a price change, so check the timestamp and confirm the pump price when you arrive.
How to compare nearby fuel prices
- Choose a comparison tool. MoneyHelper’s Petrol price finder asks for your location and fuel type. The government’s Fuel Finder service supplies retail price data to participating apps and websites. Open MoneyHelper’s petrol price finder.
- Enter your location and the correct fuel type. Compare only grades suitable for your vehicle; the lowest price is not useful if the fuel is wrong.
- Compare the per-litre prices and update timestamps. A lower displayed price may be less useful if its listing is older than a nearby alternative.
- Check the address, opening hours and amenities. Fuel Finder data includes forecourt details, opening hours and amenities, which can help you judge whether a station suits your trip.
- Account for the route. Consider added distance and time, not just the price shown. MoneyHelper’s rule of thumb is to avoid a round-trip detour of more than two miles for each 1p per litre saved. Treat this as a practical guide, not a personalised break-even calculation.
- Verify the price at the forecourt. Check the displayed pump price before filling up; a listing may not yet reflect a later change.
Why timestamps matter
UK retailers are required to report a fuel-price change within 30 minutes. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero says prices are published within that window, so comparison listings can be close to current without guaranteeing that the displayed price is still in effect when you arrive. Check how recently the listing was updated and confirm the price at the pump.
Fuel Finder makes data available to third-party apps and websites; those services determine how drivers see and search the information. Features and coverage can differ. The government’s 31 March 2026 factsheet said developers were still integrating the data, so a tool’s presence on its list does not guarantee that it currently shows Fuel Finder prices in your area.
Which apps and websites can show prices?
The government’s driver factsheet, published 31 March 2026, listed these examples: Confused.com, DriveScore, Fuel Finder UK, Fuel Spy, Google Maps, MoneyHelper, MoneySuperMarket, MotorMouth, PetrolPrices.com, Petrol Savings, RAC Fuel Watch and Waze. This is a dated list, not a guarantee of current availability or identical features. Check the app or website directly for fuel-type filters, timestamps and local coverage. The government did not provide an independent comparison establishing one tool as the most accurate or comprehensive.

What Fuel Finder data includes
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero describes Fuel Finder as a government data service that makes retail prices available to third-party apps and websites. Its data includes current prices by fuel type, forecourt details, amenities, opening hours and price-update timestamps. It is the comparison service that supplies data; the apps and websites are the interfaces drivers use.
The government’s 31 March 2026 factsheet estimated average annual savings of £40 for households that own a car. That is an estimate, not a promised saving for an individual household. The same factsheet reported that around 90% of petrol stations had signed up at that time; this is a dated snapshot, not a live coverage figure.
