The least expensive car to run is not always the one with the best fuel-economy rating. Compare candidates over the same years and miles, then add purchase and depreciation, financing, taxes and fees, insurance, fuel, maintenance, and repairs. Replace generic assumptions with your own location, driving, insurance quotes, and loan offers whenever possible. The result is a total-ownership-cost (TCO) comparison in dollars rather than a decision based on MPG or a monthly payment alone.

What total ownership cost measures

Total ownership cost is the money a vehicle is expected to consume during a defined period, less what you can sell it for at the end. A practical calculation is:

TCO = purchase price + taxes and fees + financing interest + insurance + fuel + maintenance + repairs − resale value − eligible trade-in credit

Some calculators display depreciation instead of purchase price and resale value separately. The result is equivalent when the inputs are consistent:

depreciation = purchase price (including applicable fees) − expected resale value

Fuel economy affects only the fuel line. A car that saves fuel can still cost more overall if it has a higher transaction price, loses value faster, costs more to insure, or requires more expensive service. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) advises adding upfront costs and ongoing expenses such as interest, insurance, and routine maintenance rather than judging affordability by the payment alone. Its consumer guidance was reviewed September 12, 2023: How much can I afford to borrow for a car or auto loan?

Set a like-for-like comparison before collecting prices

Choose one ownership horizon

Use the same number of months for every candidate. Five years is a useful planning horizon because it captures a substantial portion of depreciation, financing, warranty coverage, maintenance, and resale timing. It is also the horizon used by Edmunds’ True Cost to Own estimates. A shorter horizon emphasizes purchase price and early depreciation; a longer one gives maintenance, repairs, and resale uncertainty more influence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not compare a five-year estimate for one car with a three-year estimate for another. If your plan is to keep a vehicle for eight years, build an eight-year worksheet or run a separate eight-year scenario instead of treating a five-year result as a personal forecast.

Use one annual mileage assumption

Set annual miles from your commuting, errands, trips, and likely changes in routine. Apply that number to every vehicle. Edmunds’ documented default is 15,000 miles per year for mileage-dependent costs; that is a calculator assumption, not a recommendation for every driver. At 8,000 miles, fuel savings will be smaller than at 25,000 miles, while fixed costs such as depreciation and insurance do not fall in proportion.

Match the exact vehicle configuration

Record model year, body style, engine, drivetrain, transmission, battery or fuel type, trim, and options. Fuel consumption, purchase price, insurance, tires, and resale value can differ between configurations that share a model name. Compare a realistically equipped car with another realistically equipped car, including destination charges and options you would actually buy.

Build a cost worksheet

Create one column for each candidate and one row for every cost category. Keep the input, source, date, and whether it is a one-time or recurring amount. This layout makes an apparent fuel advantage auditable.

Category What to enter How to keep it comparable
Purchase Negotiated price, destination charge, selected options, taxes, registration, documentation and other local fees Use the same purchase date and include only rebates for which you qualify and that are currently available
Depreciation Purchase cost minus estimated sale or trade-in value at the end Use the same horizon and mileage; label resale values as estimates
Financing Interest over the loan, plus any finance-related fees Use each buyer’s actual amount financed, down payment, APR and term; compare total interest as well as payment
Insurance Quoted premium for the exact vehicle and driver Request quotes using the same coverage limits, deductible, address and drivers
Fuel Annual miles divided by real-world miles per gallon (or equivalent), multiplied by local fuel price and years Use the same driving mix and price date; separate gasoline, diesel, electricity or other energy assumptions
Maintenance Scheduled services, fluids, filters, inspections, tires and other routine items Use the manufacturer’s schedule and price estimates from the same region
Repairs Expected unscheduled work outside routine service Show uncertainty or a range rather than presenting a speculative figure as known

Calculate each cost category correctly

1. Purchase price, taxes and fees

Start with the transaction price you can realistically obtain, not a national list price. Add destination charges, options, sales or use tax, title, registration, documentation fees, inspection charges and other mandatory local costs. Subtract a trade-in credit or cash incentive only when it applies to your transaction and is available on the comparison date.

Keep a separate line for a down payment. It reduces the amount borrowed, but it is still money you spend at purchase. A rebate reduces the price; a down payment changes financing and cash-flow timing. Neither should disappear from the ownership calculation.

2. Depreciation and resale

Estimate what each car could be worth at the end of the chosen period and mileage, then subtract that amount from the purchase cost. Use several defensible estimates if resale data is uncertain. A high resale estimate lowers TCO, but it is not guaranteed: condition, accident history, market demand, mileage, incentives on new cars and regional preferences can change the result.

Do not mix a private-sale estimate for one candidate with a dealer trade-in estimate for another. If you expect to trade every vehicle, use trade-in values consistently; if you expect to sell privately, use private-sale values and account for the time and transaction effort separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Financing interest

Enter the amount financed after the down payment and trade-in credit, the annual percentage rate, the term, and any loan fees. Calculate total scheduled payments minus principal to obtain interest. A longer term can lower the monthly payment while increasing interest and leaving you owing more than the car is worth for longer.

Compare offers using total interest, amount financed, APR, term and total of payments, not just the advertised monthly payment. The CFPB explains the comparison factors in How do I compare auto loan offers? If two cars require different loan amounts, their payments are not a meaningful cost comparison until the principal and term are visible.

Edmunds’ published TCO methodology assumes traditional financing, a 10% down payment, a 60-month loan and an above-average credit rating for its finance rate. Those defaults help create a consistent benchmark, but they are not your loan terms. Replace them with a lender’s written offer whenever possible.

4. Insurance

Insurance can overturn a fuel-based ranking. Obtain quotes for the exact year, trim and vehicle identification details, using your address, drivers, annual mileage, coverage limits, deductible, claims history and discounts. Keep the quote date and coverage identical across candidates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A published average is only a screening number. Edmunds notes that actual insurance varies with personal circumstances and location. A generic estimate may differ materially from your premium, so use a personal quote for the final decision.

5. Fuel or energy

For a liquid-fuel vehicle, use:

annual fuel cost = annual miles ÷ expected miles per gallon × local price per gallon

Multiply by the ownership years, then adjust for the share of miles driven in city traffic, highway traffic, heavy loads, cold weather, towing or idling. For an electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid, use energy consumed per mile, charging prices at home and away from home, charging losses, and the proportion of miles powered by electricity versus liquid fuel. Keep all energy prices dated and regional.

Edmunds documents a 45% highway/55% city driving mix and a one-year moving-average fuel price for the state in its own estimate. Those assumptions describe that calculator; they are not a universal prediction. Use your actual mix and local prices for a personal worksheet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No model-specific EPA rating is established here. Verify the current official rating for the exact configuration before entering MPG or energy-consumption data, and do not substitute a rating from a different engine, drivetrain or model year.

6. Scheduled maintenance

List every service due during the horizon: oil and filter changes where applicable, inspections, fluid replacement, brake service, belts, spark plugs, tires, alignment and other manufacturer-specified work. Multiply frequency by your mileage and use regional shop or dealer prices. A maintenance plan included in the purchase price should be recorded as a benefit only if it actually covers the listed services and period.

7. Repairs and wear items

Repairs are less predictable than scheduled maintenance. Separate expected wear items, such as tires and brake components, from low-probability failures. Use a range or clearly labeled allowance, apply the same treatment to every candidate, and show how the ranking changes if the allowance is higher or lower. Avoid claiming that a repair bill is known merely because a calculator supplies an estimate.

Use a transparent comparison table

After entering the inputs, show both each vehicle’s total and the difference from the lowest-cost candidate. A reader should be able to identify the category producing the advantage.

Run sensitivity checks before choosing a winner

A ranking is meaningful only if it survives reasonable changes in uncertain inputs. Recalculate each candidate under several scenarios:

  • Mileage: your low, expected and high annual miles.
  • Fuel or electricity price: a lower and higher local price than today’s quote.
  • Insurance: the actual quotes and a conservative higher premium.
  • Financing: the best confirmed APR, a less favorable APR, and a shorter or longer term.
  • Resale: low, middle and high end-of-term values.
  • Repairs: routine-only, expected allowance and adverse-but-plausible allowance.

Fuel savings matter more as annual miles and energy prices rise. Depreciation and insurance usually dominate when mileage is low, while financing differences grow with the amount borrowed and APR. If the same car remains least expensive in every reasonable scenario, the decision is robust. If the winner changes, report the break-even condition instead of presenting a false certainty.

Find the break-even mileage

When one car costs more upfront but uses less fuel, isolate the fixed premium and annual fuel saving:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

break-even years = extra non-fuel cost ÷ annual fuel saving

Use the full non-fuel difference, including depreciation, interest, insurance, maintenance and fees. If the break-even period exceeds how long you expect to keep the car, fuel savings will not recover the premium during your ownership.

Use calculators as benchmarks, not personal forecasts

Edmunds provides a useful category framework and a consistent benchmark. Its True Cost to Own estimate covers five years and uses 15,000 miles per year, traditional financing, a 10% down payment, a 60-month loan, an above-average-credit finance rate, a 45% highway/55% city mix and state fuel prices based on a one-year moving average. The methodology is documented in Edmunds developer documentation, and the explanation is in What is True Cost to Own (TCO)?

Edmunds’ Help Center states: “Note that TCO is a comparative tool, not a predictive tool.” Treat a calculator result as a standardized starting point. Replace its mileage, loan, insurance, fuel, resale and maintenance assumptions with your own when they are available, and record the date of each input.

A practical step-by-step workflow

  1. Define the decision. Write the ownership years, annual miles, purchase date, expected sale or trade date and whether you will buy, finance or lease. A lease needs a different calculation because the payment and residual structure differs from traditional financing.
  2. Select comparable candidates. Match the purpose, passenger and cargo needs, drivetrain and equipment before comparing efficiency. Remove a car that cannot meet your requirements; a cheaper unusable vehicle is not a real alternative.
  3. Collect transaction inputs. Get itemized out-the-door prices, current eligible incentives, taxes, registration and fees for your location.
  4. Get financing offers. Record APR, amount financed, term, fees, down payment and trade-in credit. Calculate total interest and total payments for each offer.
  5. Request insurance quotes. Use identical coverage and driver information for every exact vehicle configuration.
  6. Enter energy assumptions. Verify the current official efficiency rating, then substitute your annual miles, driving mix and local fuel or charging prices.
  7. Price maintenance and repairs. Build a dated service schedule, include tires and other wear items, and label uncertain repairs as ranges.
  8. Estimate resale. Use consistent sale or trade-in evidence and low/middle/high values rather than one guaranteed number.
  9. Sum and inspect. Add every category, calculate a monthly equivalent only as a secondary view, and identify which rows create the difference.
  10. Stress-test the result. Change mileage, prices, insurance, financing and resale. Record the break-even mileage or ownership period if the ranking changes.
  11. Make the decision. Choose the lowest robust TCO among vehicles that satisfy your practical needs, or choose the candidate whose extra cost buys a requirement you value and can afford.

Common comparison mistakes and fixes

Looking only at MPG

Why it fails: It ignores price, depreciation, financing, insurance, fees and service.

Comparing monthly payments

Why it fails: A longer term or larger down payment can make a payment look smaller while increasing total interest or cash required.
Fix: Compare amount financed, APR, term, total interest and total payments.

Using different miles or years for each car

Why it fails: The arithmetic no longer describes the same ownership decision.
Fix: Lock the horizon and annual mileage before entering vehicle data.

Using a national insurance average

Why it fails: Address, driver history, coverage and deductible can move premiums substantially.
Fix: Request matched quotes for the exact vehicles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating resale as guaranteed

Why it fails: Future values depend on condition, mileage and market conditions.
Fix: Use a range and test a lower resale case.

Mixing trims or efficiency ratings

Why it fails: Wheels, drivetrain, engine and equipment can alter both consumption and price.
Fix: Verify the exact configuration and current rating before calculating.

Hiding uncertainty in one precise total

Why it fails: A dollar-perfect result suggests certainty that fuel prices, repairs and resale cannot provide.
Fix: Show assumptions, dates, ranges and sensitivity results beside the total.

How to interpret the final result

Use the category table to answer three separate questions. First, which candidate has the lowest expected total under your normal assumptions? Second, which assumptions create that result? Third, would a plausible change in mileage, prices, insurance, financing or resale reverse it?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If fuel is the only major advantage and the break-even period is longer than your planned ownership, a higher-priced efficient car may not be economical for you. If the efficient vehicle also has lower depreciation, insurance and maintenance, its advantage is more resilient. Conversely, a modest fuel penalty may be acceptable when another vehicle meets a capability or safety requirement that the cheaper candidate cannot satisfy.

The CFPB summarizes the principle this way: “To find the true cost of a car or vehicle, add together the up-front cost of the car and features plus monthly expenses, such as interest, insurance, and routine maintenance.” Use that complete-dollar view, document your assumptions, and revisit the worksheet when a quote, loan offer or vehicle configuration changes.
