A “free” game can be ad-supported, sell optional cosmetics, gate its best content behind purchases, or offer only a short free portion before charging for the rest. Before installing, identify exactly what is included, how purchases affect progress, whether paid rewards are random, how often ads appear, what social features are enabled, and whether current reviews still describe the live game.
Use the same checklist for every candidate, record the platform and date you checked, and treat store labels and ratings as starting points rather than guarantees.
What “free-to-play” actually means
The word free describes the download price, not necessarily the long-term cost or the amount of content available. The ESRB separates several models that are often presented together in app stores and game storefronts.

These categories can overlap. A free-to-play game may also show ads, and a free-to-start title may sell optional items. Read the storefront description and the rating information together instead of relying on the headline price.

Build one comparison sheet for every candidate
Live-service games change, so date your notes. Write the platform or storefront, country or region, and the date checked. Then collect the same evidence for each title.

Read the purchase labels in plain language
“In-Game Purchases”
The ESRB label covers paid digital goods and benefits. That can include costumes, virtual currency, extra levels, subscriptions, upgrades, or other advantages. The label confirms that paid content exists; it does not tell you whether purchases are cosmetic or affect progression.
“In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items)”
This notice identifies paid randomized rewards. The result might be called a loot box, gacha pull, item pack, mystery award, or another name. You pay without knowing the exact item in advance. The ESRB wording is broader than “loot box,” so search for the full label rather than only that phrase.
“Free-to-start”
Free-to-start means the opening portion is available without payment, not that the complete experience is. Find out whether the charge unlocks the rest of the game, individual expansions, or both.
Battle passes and seasonal passes
A battle pass is a paid pass that grants rewards over a set period as you play and advance. Before counting it as good value, check its price, duration, required play time, expiration rules, and whether its rewards change gameplay or are cosmetic. A pass can be optional in the store yet difficult to finish if you play only occasionally.
Work out the real cost of virtual currency
Never compare a currency amount directly with another game’s currency amount. First convert each bundle to the money charged at checkout. Use the simple calculation real cost per currency unit = bundle price ÷ currency units, then note whether the purchase leaves a balance that cannot buy anything on its own.
Record the smallest bundle that buys the item you want, not only the bundle with the lowest unit price. A larger bundle may look cheaper per unit while requiring a higher one-time payment and leaving unused currency. Also record whether taxes, regional pricing, or platform fees are added at checkout; the storefront’s final confirmation screen is the authoritative amount for your account.

Separate recurring and one-time spending. A subscription or pass that renews is a different commitment from a single cosmetic. If a game offers several currencies, map each one to what it buys before comparing prices. Some currencies are earned in play while another is purchased, and the names can be easy to confuse.
Find out whether paying is genuinely optional
“Optional” is a play-experience question, not merely a store setting. Investigate how the game behaves when you spend nothing.
- Can a new player unlock the desired modes, characters, or story through ordinary play?
- Does a paid item increase power, remove a progress wall, or provide a competitive advantage?
- Can premium currency also be earned through objectives, regular rewards, or advertisements?
- Are waiting timers, extra lives, or energy limits short inconveniences or recurring bottlenecks?
- Do prompts use urgency, countdowns, or fear of losing progress to push a purchase?
- Does multiplayer matchmaking place non-paying players against people with paid advantages?
Do not assume that every purchase is harmful or that every cosmetic store is harmless. Read recent reviews for descriptions of the actual bottlenecks, and watch an up-to-date play session to see how often offers appear.

For children, the FTC suggests asking whether a game might “manipulate kids into buying in-game purchases to succeed in the game or to prevent something bad from happening in the game.” Treat that as a prompt to inspect the game’s pressure points, not as a conclusion about every free-to-play title.
Check randomized rewards before buying
Randomized purchases deserve a separate check because the item received is unknown at the moment of payment. Look for the ESRB random-items notice where it is available, then find the odds disclosure on the relevant storefront or the game’s official purchase screen.
Apple’s App Store Review Guidelines for the United Kingdom require apps offering loot boxes or other paid mechanisms for randomized virtual items to disclose the odds of receiving each type of item before purchase. That is a region-specific platform policy, not a universal rule for every store or country. If you play on another platform, look for that platform’s own disclosure and do not assume the same requirement applies.

Compare a randomized offer with a direct-purchase offer separately. A direct price tells you what you will receive; an odds table tells you the probabilities, not the number of purchases needed to obtain a particular item. If the game uses several layers of random rewards, record each layer and the currency required for one attempt.

Look for ads, including ads aimed at other games
Age and content ratings do not generally cover advertising or user-created content. A game can carry an appropriate age rating while showing frequent interstitial ads, rewarded videos, or promotions for other games.
Use current reviews and gameplay footage to determine:
- Whether an ad interrupts a level or appears only between sessions.
- How long an interruption lasts and whether it can be closed immediately.
- Whether watching an ad is optional or the normal route to extra lives, currency, or faster progress.
- Whether ads promote other games or services that are unsuitable for the player.
- Whether an ad-free option exists and what it removes, if anything besides advertising.
The FTC notes that most parental-control systems do not directly limit advertising. A spending restriction therefore does not necessarily stop a child from seeing promotional material.
Evaluate chat, player interaction, and location sharing
ESRB interactive elements are separate from the age and content rating. “Users Interact” indicates that players may communicate or interact with others, while “Shares Location” indicates that location information may be shared. These notices do not describe the quality of moderation or the behavior of every player.
Before installing, find the controls for text chat, voice chat, friend requests, direct messages, blocking, reporting, and location sharing. Check whether those controls are available per account or only globally. For a child, identify who can contact the account by default and whether communication can be disabled without disabling the game itself.
Read recent reviews for reports of harassment, spam, weak moderation, or unexpected contact. Social suitability can change after an update, so an old review is not a safety assessment of the current version.

Use ratings and reviews as screening tools, not guarantees
Read the age rating and its content summary, then check the interactive-elements notices. A rating is not a complete description of monetization, advertising, chat, or user-created material.
Sort reviews by recency and read a spread of experiences. Look specifically for comments about:

- Changes after major updates.
- New currencies, passes, or randomized items.
- Progression becoming slower or more expensive.
- Ad frequency and whether ads interrupt play.
- Server reliability, matchmaking, and moderation.
Watch current gameplay from the same platform and, where possible, the same region. Footage should show ordinary menus and progression rather than only a trailer. Compare the upload date with the game’s latest update; a polished older video can conceal a changed store or progression system.
A step-by-step pre-install workflow
- Define your non-negotiables. Decide whether you require a completely no-spend experience, can tolerate ads, need offline play, or want only cosmetic purchases. For a child, set an age range and decide whether chat or location sharing is acceptable.
- Identify the exact edition. Record the platform, storefront, country or region, and whether the listing is for the full game, a trial, or a companion app.
- Read every storefront disclosure. Note the free-to-play or free-to-start description, in-game-purchase labels, random-items notice, age rating, interactive elements, and any subscription language.
- Map the free content. Write down the modes, levels, characters, maps, and story chapters available before payment. Mark expansions or episodes that are required for the experience you want.
- Map the payment routes. List currencies, bundle sizes, cosmetics, convenience items, power upgrades, passes, subscriptions, and direct expansions. Mark which can be earned through play.
- Investigate ads and randomness. Read current reviews for ad interruptions, locate odds disclosures for randomized rewards, and note whether purchases are direct or chance-based.
- Check the live social environment. Watch recent gameplay and inspect chat, voice, blocking, reporting, and location settings. For a child, review device spending and communication controls before installation.
- Score the candidate. Rate free access, purchase pressure, ad burden, randomness, social exposure, and current reliability using the same notes for every game. Keep the date beside the score.
- Install with safeguards. Use a separate account or a spending limit where appropriate, disable unwanted communication or location sharing, and do not save a payment method on a child’s account.
- Verify the first session. Confirm that the opening experience matches the listing. Check when the first purchase prompt appears, whether progress is blocked, and whether ads or chat work as described. If the reality differs materially, stop spending and reassess before continuing.
Choose according to the player, not a universal “best” list
If you want to spend nothing
Prioritize games whose desired modes are fully included, whose currency can be earned through normal play, and whose reviews do not describe recurring progress walls. Ads may still be the main cost in attention, so evaluate their frequency separately.
If cosmetics are acceptable
Look for direct prices and a clear separation between appearance and power. Confirm that the store does not hide essential progression behind bundles or randomized purchases.
If you play competitively
Give extra weight to power advantages, paid upgrades, matchmaking, and the ability to earn equivalent items through play. A game that is enjoyable casually may feel unfair in ranked modes.
If you have limited time
Check pass duration, daily requirements, energy systems, timers, and the amount of play needed to claim advertised rewards. A low monetary price does not make a pass suitable if completion requires a schedule you cannot maintain.

If a child will play
Read the age and content rating, interactive-element notices, current reviews, and parent perspectives. Configure spending, time, chat, and location controls, remembering that most parental controls do not directly filter ads.
Platform rules and legal examples need careful qualification
Storefront policies differ by platform and territory. The United Kingdom guidance cited from Apple’s App Store requires odds disclosures for paid randomized virtual items, but that does not establish a worldwide requirement.
In January 2025, the FTC described a U.S. settlement involving HoYoverse’s Genshin Impact. The settlement bars sales of its loot boxes to children under 16 without parental consent and requires clear real-money costs and odds; the FTC also discussed COPPA protections for children under 13. This is a specific enforcement example, not a rule that automatically governs every game or every country.
Use the policy that applies to your platform, account, and location. When a storefront, rating page, or game screen gives conflicting information, save a screenshot and rely on the most specific, current disclosure before paying.
What to do when the installed game differs from the listing
Live games can change after reviews are written. If an update introduces new ads, paid gates, randomized items, or social features that alter your decision, document what changed and review the current settings before spending.
- Recheck the storefront listing and in-game purchase screen.
- Disable chat, location sharing, or notifications you do not need.
- Remove saved payment details or apply the platform’s spending restrictions.
- Read reviews posted after the update rather than relying on the original rating.
- Stop at the first purchase prompt if the free experience no longer meets your requirements.
A disciplined comparison does not guarantee a perfect game. It does let you reject a poor fit before investing money, time, or personal information.
