The dependable way to match foundation between brands is to use a shade that already works as a reference, compare depth and undertone separately, then test a short list on your jaw in daylight after the formula settles. Shade numbers and names are not universal codes, so an online match is a starting candidate—not proof of an exact match.
What a cross-brand shade match actually means
A cross-brand match is an approximation between two specific foundation formulas. Your reference shade might be a medium-neutral liquid in one product, while the target is a serum, powder, stick or cream with a different pigment balance and finish. Even within one company, shades can shift between formulas. The goal is therefore not to find a magically equivalent number; it is to find the target formula that disappears into your face when viewed in realistic light.
Retailer and brand tools can reduce dozens of possibilities to a manageable shortlist. They cannot account perfectly for every camera, undertone description, formula change, oxidation pattern or lighting condition. Treat the result as a set of candidates to test on skin.

Why shade names and numbers do not transfer cleanly
Words such as “Ivory,” “Beige,” “Honey” or “Sand,” and labels such as 2N or 350, are created inside each brand’s own system. The same word may describe different lightness, saturation or undertone elsewhere. A number that increases with depth in one range may use a completely different scale in another. Ulta’s undertone guidance recommends using undertone information as a comparison aid rather than assuming labels are interchangeable. The MAC Foundation Shade Finder likewise supports cross-brand matching while noting that shade can vary between foundation formulas.

Formula differences create a second source of error. Two products can have similar wet swatches but differ after drying, or one can sheer out while the other builds to opaque coverage. A matte formula may appear slightly deeper than a luminous formula because it reflects less light. Compare the actual product you intend to wear, not only a brand’s general shade family.
Record a dependable reference shade first
Start with a foundation that genuinely matches your face in the season and conditions in which you plan to wear the new product. Write down the details before opening a finder.
- Brand and exact product: include the line and formula, not merely the company name.
- Shade name or number: copy the label exactly, including letters such as N, W or C.
- Market: note the country or region where you bought it. Shade catalogs and names can differ by market.
- Finish and coverage: record whether it is matte, natural, satin or luminous, and sheer, medium or full coverage.
- Season and skin state: a winter match may be lighter than a summer match after sun exposure; note significant tanning, dryness or redness.
If your current foundation is already visibly too pink, yellow, gray, light or deep, it is a poor conversion reference. Correct that problem first or use a second well-fitting shade to establish the direction of the adjustment.

Compare depth and undertone as two separate decisions
Depth: how light or deep the shade appears
Depth describes relative lightness or darkness. Compare the target candidates with your reference on the jaw, where the face transitions to the neck. A candidate that has the right undertone but is clearly lighter or deeper is still a mismatch. Look at the edge of the swatch, not only its center: a good depth match should fade into both face and neck without a visible stripe.
Undertone: the color direction beneath the depth
Undertone describes the persistent color cast that makes a shade read warm, cool, neutral or, in some ranges, a more specific olive, golden, peach or red description. A shade can match lightness and still look too pink, yellow, red or gray. Use the undertone description of your known formula as a clue, then verify it on skin; a brand’s “neutral” is not guaranteed to equal another brand’s neutral.

Do not infer undertone from a shared letter alone. One company’s “W” may be yellow-golden, while another’s may be peach or simply a marketing category. When a range provides detailed undertone descriptions, use those descriptions to narrow candidates, but let the face test decide.
A step-by-step cross-brand matching workflow
- Choose the reference. Select the exact formula and shade that currently blends into your face. Record its market, finish, coverage and the date or season.
- Generate a shortlist. Enter the reference into a cross-brand tool such as Ulta’s Shade-to-Shade Finder, the MAC finder or the Catrice HD Foundation Shade Finder, when the target product is included. Coverage and availability can change, so confirm that the tool is using the exact formula you plan to buy.
- Keep adjacent options. Save the closest depth plus one shade lighter and one deeper, and include the nearest undertone alternatives. A shortlist of three to five candidates is easier to test than an entire range.
- Check depth first. Eliminate candidates that are plainly too light or too deep on the product’s swatch images or in person. Do not choose a lighter shade merely because its name sounds familiar.
- Check undertone second. Among similar depths, compare warm, cool, neutral and any more specific descriptors. Reject a shade that leaves a pink, yellow, red or gray cast even if the depth looks close.
- Apply narrow swatches. On bare or normally prepped skin, place parallel strips from the lower cheek across the jaw toward the neck. Use enough product to represent the intended coverage, and label each strip so you do not confuse candidates.
- Inspect in daylight. Move near a window or outdoors in indirect daylight. Artificial indoor light can hide a mismatch; check both the center of the face and the jaw-to-neck transition.
- Let the formula settle. Wait the period needed for the product to dry and meld with skincare. Recheck before deciding. Some formulas appear deeper or warmer over time, a shift commonly called oxidation.
- Wear the finalists. If possible, wear the best one for several hours over your normal skincare and primer. Note the settled color, texture, coverage and whether oil or dryness changes its appearance.
- Buy only after verification. Choose the candidate that remains least visible after settling in the light where you will use it. If none disappears, accept that the target formula may not have a suitable match rather than forcing the nearest label.
How to test a swatch accurately
Use the jaw and face, not the hand
Hands and wrists are often a different depth and undertone from the face. Revlon’s foundation-matching guidance says those areas rarely match the face closely enough for a final decision. Apply on the lower cheek and jaw, then inspect where the color crosses toward the neck. If you normally wear foundation over the entire face, test enough area to judge coverage and finish as well as color.
Judge in daylight and after the product dries
Apply candidates side by side under the same conditions. Daylight exposes pink, yellow and gray shifts that warm bulbs can conceal. Let the swatches settle before choosing: Ulta recommends allowing swatches to settle, and Revlon notes that some formulas can look deeper or warmer with time. The MAC shade-finder guidance also advises allowing time when oxidation is a concern.
Record two observations if the color changes: its initial wet appearance and its settled appearance. Select on the settled result, since that is what will be visible during wear. A sample, tester or store service is preferable to buying a full bottle when the formula’s behavior is unknown.
Using online shade finders without over-trusting them
Digital tools are useful for reducing the search area, especially when a range contains many shades. Enter the exact brand, product and shade whenever the interface allows it; selecting a generic brand family can produce an overly broad result. Keep the tool’s suggestions as candidates and perform the jaw test described above.

| Tool or method | What it can do | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Ulta Shade-to-Shade Finder and undertone guide | Uses a known shade and undertone information to suggest options across brands. | Coverage depends on the products and shade catalogs currently included; the output still needs a skin test. |
| MAC Foundation Shade Finder | Provides cross-brand guidance and information about undertone and formula variation. | A correspondence is not a universal conversion between every formula. |
| Catrice HD Foundation Shade Finder | Offers direct comparison from a current brand and shade where supported. | Availability and the products covered can change; verify the exact target formula. |
| Third-party Foundation Shade Finder | Describes photo sampling of cheek, forehead and jaw areas and comparison across more than 100 brands. | The site’s method is its own vendor description, not independent validation; camera lighting, filters and catalog coverage affect the result. |
The third-party service says it averages sampled areas in CIE L*a*b* color space and compares shades with CIEDE2000 color-distance calculations. It instructs users to face the camera, use daylight and avoid filters. Those steps can improve the input, but they do not remove differences between a selfie, a product image and a real formula on skin.
Computational matching is still an active technical problem. A preprint posted July 8, 2024, describes an image-analysis approach for predicting skin-with-foundation color from an unmade-up selfie and a foundation-shade image: A Color Image Analysis Tool to Help Users Choose a Makeup Foundation Color. Its existence shows why tools are being developed; it is not evidence that a consumer finder guarantees a correct match.
Compare the formula, not just the pigment label
After depth and undertone, evaluate whether the target product behaves like the reference. Make these comparisons before treating two shades as interchangeable:
| Factor | Questions to ask | Why it changes the match |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Is the target sheer, medium-buildable or full? | Sheer coverage lets more skin show through; opaque coverage makes the pigment’s undertone and depth more apparent. |
| Finish | Is it matte, natural, satin or luminous? | Reflection changes how light or deep the color appears, even when the pigment is similar. |
| Base and texture | Is it liquid, serum, cream, stick or powder? | Different bases spread, dry and layer differently, altering the final visible color. |
| Wear behavior | Does it darken, warm, fade or separate on your skin? | The shade you see hours later is the one that matters for a full-day match. |
| Skin preparation | Will you use the same moisturizer, sunscreen and primer? | Oil, hydration and primer can change how a product sets and reflects light. |
For a fair comparison, use the same preparation and application tool you expect to use after purchase. A damp sponge, brush and fingers can leave different film thicknesses, so do not compare a thin hand smear with a properly blended face application.
Diagnose a near miss instead of guessing randomly
The depth is right but the shade looks too pink or red
Move within the same depth family toward a neutral or warmer description, depending on the target range. Confirm under daylight and after settling; redness in the surrounding skin can make a neutral swatch appear cooler than it is.

The depth is right but the shade looks too yellow or orange
Try the closest neutral or cooler candidate at the same depth. Check that the product has not warmed as it dried, because an initially acceptable swatch can become noticeably warmer during wear.
The shade looks gray or dull
Grayness can indicate an undertone mismatch, an overly light or muted shade, or a formula that dries down differently from the reference. Test the adjacent depth and undertone options side by side rather than adding a darker product to compensate blindly.
The face matches but the neck does not
Recheck the jaw-to-neck transition in daylight. Decide whether your normal application stops at the jaw or extends down the neck, then match the area that should look seamless. Do not use a hand swatch to resolve this difference.
The first application matches but becomes darker later
Use the settled color as your baseline. Test a sample for several hours, and compare it with the reference at the same time of day. If every candidate shifts beyond an acceptable range, the formula may simply be incompatible with your needs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen the correct answer is “no equivalent shade”
Shade ranges are not identical. A target brand may skip the undertone or depth you need, or its nearest shade may have a finish that changes the appearance too much. “Closest” is not the same as “matches.” If each candidate leaves a visible edge after settling, stop searching by label and consider a different formula or range with a better undertone span.

Mixing two shades can be a practical personal solution only when you can reproduce the ratio consistently and the formulas are compatible. Treat the mixture as a new custom shade: test it on the jaw, allow it to settle and record the proportions. Do not assume that combining labels creates a predictable cross-brand code.
Using a real product as a controlled comparison
A concrete example is Revlon’s ColorStay Longwear Makeup SPF 15, which Revlon describes as available in 43 shades across cool, warm and neutral families. That figure applies to the version and market represented on Revlon’s matching page; inventory can differ by region and can change. If you use an existing shade from that line as your reference, verify the exact product version and current local shade before converting it to another brand.
The example illustrates the method rather than establishing a universal recommendation: identify the exact shade family, shortlist similar depths and undertones in the new formula, then test the candidates on your face.

Once you find a match, save a small record in your phone:
- Brand, product line and formula.
- Exact shade name or number and the market where it was purchased.
- Your best description of depth and undertone.
- Finish, coverage and whether the shade changes after several hours.
- Season, approximate skin condition and the lighting in which you verified it.
- Any adjacent shade that worked as a lighter or deeper seasonal option.
This record makes the next cross-brand search more precise than relying on memory or a retailer’s generic “closest match” label. Re-test when a formula is reformulated, your skin tone changes substantially or you move to a different coverage and finish.
A compact decision checklist
- Do I know the exact reference formula, shade and market?
- Have I separated depth from undertone?
- Did I shortlist adjacent depths and undertones rather than one automated result?
- Did I apply candidates on the jaw or face instead of the hand?
- Did I inspect the face-to-neck transition in daylight?
- Did I wait for drying and possible oxidation?
- Did I compare coverage, finish and wear behavior?
- Would I accept that this target range has no true match if every swatch remains visible?
Following those checks turns a cross-brand conversion from a guess based on labels into a small, repeatable skin test. The final choice is the shade that remains visually seamless in your intended formula and lighting, not the one with the most similar name or number.
