To compare extraction games, start with one question: what do you risk by deploying, and what must you do to bank a successful run? Then check whether the main danger comes from other players, AI enemies and hazards, or both; whether your intended group can play together; and how much preparation and persistent progression the game expects. The label “extraction game” does not answer those questions by itself.
What makes an extraction game different?
An extraction game is built around a consequential choice: leave with what you have secured, or stay longer in pursuit of more while risking the run. You deploy into a dangerous space, work toward objectives or valuable loot, and try to reach an extraction point. Success is not simply defeating enemies or completing a mission; it also depends on getting out with something to bank.
That loop makes failure and success matter beyond the moment-to-moment firefight. A death may cost carried equipment or collected loot, while a successful extraction can convert what you secured into persistent currency, experience, or other progression. The exact stakes vary by game, so compare the rules rather than assuming that every title handles a failed run the same way.
PlayStation’s official Marathon page sums up the central decision: “Knowing when to push forward for greater loot vs when to bank what you’ve found by extracting is an essential skill.” It is a useful way to frame the genre, but the balance of risk and reward—and the threats that create that risk—differs substantially from one game to another.

What should you look for in an extraction game?
Use the following checks in order. They move from the core feel of a run to practical questions that can rule a game in or out. A title can sound appealing in a trailer yet be a poor fit if its failure stakes, team rules, or platform support do not match what you want.
- Threat mix: Find out whether pressure comes mainly from rival players (PvP), enemies controlled by the game (PvE), environmental hazards, or a mixture. This is often the biggest determinant of how unpredictable a run feels.
- Failure stakes: Check exactly what a character brings in, what can be lost on death, and what a successful extraction preserves or converts. Distinguish gear you risk from rewards you have already banked.
- Objective and exit rules: Identify what a run asks you to accomplish, how you locate or reach the extraction point, and what can interrupt an escape. An objective-led bounty hunt and a loot-focused run may share an extraction mechanic but create different priorities.
- Group fit: Verify the supported team sizes and whether solo play is a designed option. Do not assume that a game with squads also offers a separate solo queue, or that every friend can join the same team.
- Preparation and progression: Look at how much loadout planning happens before a run, what can be unlocked between runs, and what a setback means for long-term character development.
- Practical access: Confirm your platform, regional availability, current price and edition, system requirements, and whether friends on other platforms can play with you. These details can change and must be checked for the storefront and region you will actually use.
Keep the answers specific. “Has PvP,” for example, is less useful than knowing whether enemy players are a central threat alongside AI. “Supports solo” is less useful than knowing whether the game offers solo lobbies, lets you enter alone in a shared environment, or provides a special solo character or mode.
How does the threat mix change a run?
Threat mix is not a simple PvP-versus-PvE quality scale. It tells you what kind of uncertainty you will manage. Human opponents can make routes, timing, and other players’ intentions hard to predict. AI enemies and hazards create pressure through the game’s encounters and environment. A mixed-threat game asks you to manage both at once.
Mostly player-driven pressure
When rival players are a major part of the danger, a seemingly quiet route may still lead to a confrontation. Other players may be pursuing the same rewards, moving toward the same objective, or waiting near an exit. The decision to leave can be shaped not only by how much loot you have, but also by what you infer about nearby competitors. The supplied official descriptions do not establish a numerical measure of PvP intensity for the examples here, so do not treat a genre label or one page’s summary as a reliable difficulty ranking.
Mostly cooperative PvE pressure
In cooperative PvE, the group’s challenge is centered on enemies and mission conditions rather than combat with rival players. That does not automatically make a game easy or safe: coordination, enemy behavior, and objective pressure can still make a mission demanding. Ubisoft describes Rainbow Six Extraction as a tactical, squad-based cooperative PvE shooter against an evolving alien threat. This makes it a useful contrast for someone who wants coordinated missions against AI rather than a mixed PvP/PvE extraction loop.

A deliberate mixture
Some games put AI threats and rival players into the same broader risk picture. ARC Raiders’ official description presents both deadly machines and Raiders who prey on one another. PlayStation’s official Marathon page likewise describes AI enemies and other players hunting rewards. In this kind of design, a fight against AI can expose your position or consume resources while human opponents remain another possible danger. The examples establish a mixed-threat premise, not a comparative claim about how frequently player encounters happen.
Before choosing, ask yourself which uncertainty you actually enjoy: reading human opponents, coordinating against predictable mission threats, or weighing both while deciding when to extract. That preference is more useful than a broad claim that one title is “more intense” or “more casual,” neither of which is established by the official descriptions alone.

Failure stakes determine how expensive a mistake feels. Read the rules for deployment and extraction separately: the gear you risk by bringing it in may differ from the rewards you collect during a run, and the reward may only become yours after extraction. If the game’s own explanation does not make that distinction clear, check its current beginner guide or official game page before committing valuable equipment.
For Marathon, PlayStation’s official page says defeat can cost the equipment brought into a run, and it frames the choice to extract or continue pushing as central. That supports a clear practical question: is the possible reward for staying longer worth the loadout you have exposed to loss?
In Hunt: Showdown 1896, the official beginner guide describes a Bounty Hunt in which players equip a Hunter, investigate clues, locate and fight a boss, take the bounty, and try to extract. It says extracted Bounty Tokens convert to Hunt Dollars and experience. The extraction is therefore part of realizing the objective’s reward, not a cosmetic end-of-match step.

- Before a run: Identify which equipment is carried in and whether losing it affects only the next loadout or also your longer-term progression. Do not assume that all games use the same persistence rules.
- During a run: Track what you have acquired and what remains at risk. More time spent pursuing an additional objective can mean more potential reward, but it also extends exposure to threats.
- At the exit: Check whether extraction is immediate, requires a sequence or interaction, or can be interrupted. A route to an exit is not the same thing as a secured reward.
- After success: Find out what is banked and how it is converted—such as into currency or experience—before assuming that every item has the same value outside the run.
Do not compare the seriousness of two games’ failure systems from a single word such as “permadeath” or “loot loss.” Look for the actual consequences of defeat, what successful extraction saves, and how a player can recover or prepare for another attempt. The official pages summarized here do not provide a common numeric loss rate, average match duration, or difficulty score, so those are not reliable comparison fields on this evidence.
How do objectives and extraction rules shape the pace?
The objective tells you why you are in the space; the exit rules determine when you can turn that progress into a completed run. Compare both. A game may ask you to search for clues and take down a target, while another may foreground configurable characters, contracts, and the choice to pursue loot. The available descriptions do not support a standardized measure of how long these activities take.
Hunt: Showdown 1896: a bounty-led sequence
The official beginner guide lays out a distinct sequence: equip a Hunter, investigate clues, find and fight a boss, take the bounty, then try to extract. It also notes that extraction can be interrupted. That makes the objective and the escape part of one connected problem: reaching the bounty is not sufficient if you cannot complete the departure. The guide includes information on maps, loadouts, and traits, which can help a new player understand the systems around that sequence.
ARC Raiders and Marathon: weigh what comes next
ARC Raiders’ official overview establishes the setting’s two broad dangers—machines and other Raiders—and describes play with a squad or as a lone ranger. It is enough to identify a mixed-threat social extraction model, but it does not give a comparable account of detailed failure costs or progression systems on the page reviewed. Avoid filling those gaps with assumptions based on genre conventions.
PlayStation’s Marathon page ties extraction to a push-or-bank decision and describes AI and player threats. It also presents configurable Runner shells, faction contracts that unlock season-long benefits, and a ranked mode. The page currently describes Season 2 content and a Cryo Archive endgame zone with access requirements; because season and access details are live-game information, confirm the current rules on the official page before planning around them.

For any game, write the objective as a short chain: what you do first, what reward or target you pursue, what must happen before leaving, and what can stop you. If the official instructions do not specify a link in that chain, treat it as unknown rather than borrowing another game’s rules.
Which extraction shooter is right for solo play or a group?
Check team rules on the official page or in-game queue description. “Squad-based” does not tell you whether a solo player can enter, whether they will be matched with others, or whether the game provides a distinct solo experience. Likewise, a stated maximum squad size does not establish that a smaller group can queue in every mode.
| Game | Solo and group information established by the official page or guide | What to verify for your group |
|---|---|---|
| ARC Raiders | The official overview describes playing with a squad or as a lone ranger. | Confirm the current team size, matchmaking behavior, and cross-platform party rules for your platforms. |
| Hunt: Showdown 1896 | The official beginner guide describes solo, duo, and trio team settings. | Check the current queue and team options in your region and chosen mode. |
| Marathon | PlayStation’s official page describes crews of two or three, solo lobbies, and a lone Rook option. | Check current mode availability and the rules for the specific solo or crew option you intend to use. |
| Rainbow Six Extraction | Ubisoft describes it as a squad-based cooperative PvE shooter; the page reviewed does not establish a complete current solo-queue ruleset. | Confirm the available squad sizes and solo rules in the current game and edition before buying or organizing a group. |
For cross-platform play, “available on several platforms” is not the same as “friends on those platforms can join the same party.” ARC Raiders’ official site lists storefront or platform links for Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and GeForce NOW, and describes cross-platform social play across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. That supports cross-platform social play as a feature to investigate, but you should still verify the current party and account requirements. Ubisoft lists Rainbow Six Extraction for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One; platform listings alone do not establish cross-play details.
How much preparation and progression should you expect?
Preparation changes the rhythm between runs. A game with detailed loadouts and unlockable traits asks you to make choices before deployment; a game with character configurations and faction benefits may add longer-term planning. Compare the decisions the official material actually describes, not an assumed amount of complexity.

Hunt: Showdown 1896’s official guide details weapons, tools, consumables, and traits. Those categories make equipment selection an identifiable part of preparation. When evaluating a title with this kind of system, consider whether you want to make deliberate choices before each run, and look for guidance on what is retained or lost when a Hunter fails.

Character configuration and between-run benefits
Marathon describes configurable Runner shells and faction contracts that unlock season-long benefits. Those are separate considerations: shell configuration concerns how a character is set up, while faction contracts connect activity to longer-term benefits. The official page’s current season and endgame-zone details can change, so avoid treating a live content gate as a permanent rule.
When published information is incomplete
ARC Raiders’ official overview says a Raider can be shaped in identity and playstyle, but does not provide progression detail comparable to the other descriptions here. That is a limit of what the page establishes, not proof that the game has no progression system. For a fair comparison, mark the detail as unstated and consult the current official game information before deciding how much preparation or long-term development it involves.
Useful preparation questions include whether loadouts are assembled from weapons, tools, or consumables; whether traits or abilities unlock over time; whether a failed run removes the character, equipment, or only some collected rewards; and whether seasonal benefits reset. The examples provide some answers, but not a shared system or a comparable complexity score.

How to compare platforms, price, and access
Practical access can decide the comparison before mechanics do. Check the exact platform you own, the storefront serving your country, whether the game is currently sold there, the edition included in the listing, and the machine requirements if you play on PC. Then confirm whether friends can join across their platforms. Availability on a platform does not establish cross-play, and a platform page does not by itself establish current price or stock.
| Game | Platforms or services listed in the official information reviewed | Price, system requirements, current population, and retail edition details |
|---|---|---|
| ARC Raiders | Official site lists Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and GeForce NOW; its overview describes cross-platform social play across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. | Not stated in the official information summarized here; check the relevant current storefront and region. |
| Hunt: Showdown 1896 | Not stated in the official guide summarized here. | Not stated in the official guide summarized here; check current platform listings and requirements. |
| Marathon | Not stated in the PlayStation page details summarized here beyond the page being hosted by PlayStation. | Not stated in the page details summarized here; check current platform and storefront listings. |
| Rainbow Six Extraction | Ubisoft lists PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. | Not stated on the Ubisoft page reviewed; check the current regional store listing. |
The available official information does not establish current prices, comparable PC system requirements, player populations, or exact retail edition formats for these games. Those values are time- and region-sensitive, so a comparison should cite the relevant platform or publisher listing with a date and geography rather than copy an old figure or infer that a game is easy to find. The same caution applies to ongoing updates and edition availability: Ubisoft’s page identifies Rainbow Six Extraction as released January 20, 2022, but does not establish present-day population, update cadence, or current edition availability.
A reusable way to make your shortlist
Use this process to turn general impressions into a decision based on your priorities. You do not need a numeric score if one essential requirement—such as a platform, solo option, or PvE-only preference—already rules a title in or out.
- Write down your non-negotiables. Name your platform, the friends you want to play with, whether solo is required, and whether you want PvP, PvE, or a mix.
- Describe the run you want. Decide whether a bounty-and-extraction objective, a cooperative mission, or a broader loot-and-risk loop sounds most appealing. Use official descriptions to identify the objective rather than extrapolating from trailers.
- Read the failure rule. Record what can be lost on defeat and what extraction banks. If the source does not say, write “not established” and verify it before choosing.
- Check group and progression details. Confirm solo and team options, then note the loadout, character, trait, or contract systems that are explicitly documented.
- Verify access last, but before committing. Check the current regional store listing, platform support, system requirements, edition, and cross-play or party rules. Recheck live-season content if it affects where you can play.
- Choose by fit, not an unsupported ranking. Prefer the title whose documented mechanics best match your group and tolerance for risk. If key information remains unclear, treat that uncertainty as a reason to verify, not as evidence that the game is easier or harder.
A compact comparison sheet can use one row per game and these columns: threat mix; failure stakes; objective and extraction sequence; solo and squad rules; loadout and persistent progression; supported platforms and cross-play; and current regional price and access. Keep source and check date beside volatile values. A blank or “not stated” cell is more useful than a guess presented as fact.

Let the kind of run you want—and the verified rules on your platform—decide the shortlist.
