To compare energy funds, look beyond their names: check each fund’s mandate and benchmark, inspect its current holdings and concentration, compare annual operating expenses and trading costs, then evaluate risk statistics over matching periods. These steps matter because funds labeled “energy” can follow different indexes and hold different mixes of companies, while sector exposure can make them more sensitive to energy-market swings than a broad-market fund.
Start with the mandate and benchmark
A fund’s name tells you its general category, not exactly what it owns or how its portfolio is assembled. Start with its prospectus and identify the investment objective, the index it tracks (if any), and the rules that determine eligible securities and their weights. An actively managed fund may instead describe the strategy its managers follow. Compare those mandates before comparing performance or fees: funds built differently are not necessarily like-for-like alternatives.
For example, Vanguard says VDE seeks to track the MSCI US Investable Market Energy 25/50 Index, which covers large-, mid-, and small-cap U.S. energy stocks classified under GICS. State Street’s XLE seeks results corresponding generally, before expenses, to publicly traded securities in the Energy Select Sector Index. Global X’s April 1, 2026 summary prospectus describes GXPE’s objective as tied to the MSCI USA Energy Index. Those are different benchmark descriptions and construction rules, despite all three funds having an energy focus. The descriptions are examples, not a complete list of energy funds or investment recommendations. VDE prospectus, Vanguard VDE product page, XLE prospectus, GXPE prospectus.
Make a mandate comparison sheet
For each candidate, record the fund’s stated objective, the benchmark or management approach, the eligible market or company types, and any notable construction rules. If an index description refers to a particular geography, company-size range, or classification system, capture it rather than reducing it to “energy stocks.” A benchmark’s name alone may not convey every rule, so use the prospectus or fund materials to understand what it is intended to represent.

This step also helps distinguish a genuine difference in mandate from a temporary difference in holdings. If one fund follows a broad U.S. energy-stock index and another uses a narrower or differently constructed index, their portfolios and results may diverge even when energy markets move in the same direction.
When you line up mandates, ask whether the funds are intended to cover the same market and whether they use comparable eligibility and weighting rules. A difference in company-size coverage, geography, or index construction can affect which issuers qualify and how their portfolio weights are set. That helps explain why the label “energy fund” is not enough to conclude that two funds hold the same kind of exposure.
Inspect holdings, concentration, and subsectors
After identifying what the fund is designed to own, check what it actually owns. Use the latest holdings list or fund fact sheet, and note the date of the snapshot: portfolio weights and securities can change. Vanguard’s product page reported 111 VDE holdings as of August 31, 2026. That is a dated count, not a current guarantee or a complete measure of diversification.
Look at the largest positions and their combined portfolio weight, not just the total number of securities. A fund can own many companies yet still depend heavily on a handful of large holdings. Also compare the portfolio’s subsectors: integrated energy, exploration and production, refining, services, and other energy businesses may respond differently to market conditions. The mix can explain why two funds with similar names or broad mandates behave differently.
What to capture from each holdings list
- As-of date: Record the date attached to the holdings data so you can tell whether the snapshots are comparable.
- Largest issuers: Note the top positions and add their weights to see how much of the portfolio is concentrated in its biggest holdings.
- Subsector exposure: Identify the types of energy businesses represented, rather than assuming the fund’s exposure is uniform across the sector.
- Number of holdings: Use the count as context, not as a stand-alone diversification score.
- Benchmark relationship: If it is an index fund, check whether the holdings and weights are consistent with the benchmark’s stated approach; if actively managed, compare them with the manager’s disclosed strategy.
Concentration can arise at more than one level. A portfolio may be concentrated in the energy sector as a whole, in a few issuers within that sector, or in a particular subsector. Those are separate questions, and a holdings count alone does not answer them.

Holdings and benchmark information answer related but distinct questions. The mandate tells you the portfolio the fund is designed to build; the holdings snapshot shows its reported composition at a particular date. If the snapshot is older than another fund’s, do not assume that the difference between their lists reflects a lasting strategy distinction. First check the dates, then compare the positions, weights, and subsector mix as reported.
Compare expense ratios and the costs of trading
Start with each fund’s current prospectus and compare its total annual operating expenses. The expense ratio is a recurring fund-level cost expressed as a percentage of assets; it is not a complete estimate of what every investor will pay. Check whether the disclosed figure reflects a fee waiver or reimbursement, when that arrangement applies, and whether it has an expiration or other conditions.

| XLE | 0.08% | State Street 2026 prospectus filing. Prospectus |
| GXPE | 0.15% after fee waiver and/or reimbursement | Global X summary prospectus dated April 1, 2026. Prospectus |
A small difference in expense ratios is only one part of a cost comparison. Brokerage fees or commissions may apply, and ETF investors may also incur costs through the bid-ask spread—the difference between the price at which shares can be bought and sold. VDE’s prospectus says brokerage fees vary. State Street notes that XLE shares trade at market prices that may differ from net asset value (NAV); Vanguard’s VDE materials also describe the possibility of ETF shares trading at a premium or discount to NAV. VDE prospectus, XLE prospectus, Vanguard VDE product page.
How trading costs affect the comparison
The expense ratio is charged within the fund over time, while commissions, spreads, and execution prices are tied to an investor’s transactions and brokerage arrangements. A low expense ratio therefore does not, by itself, establish which fund will cost less for a particular investor. Check the broker’s current commission schedule and compare the quoted bid and ask when considering an ETF trade. A market price above NAV is a premium; one below NAV is a discount. The size and relevance of such differences depend on the trade and the circumstances when it is placed.

SEC fee research notes that fund disclosures cover objectives, risks, fees, and other attributes, but the disclosure requirements discussed in that report do not require comparative fee information. In practice, you may need to line up prospectuses yourself rather than expect a standardized “cheapest versus peers” comparison. SEC fee research report.
Keep recurring fund expenses separate from the costs of buying or selling shares. The prospectus expense ratio is useful for comparing disclosed annual operating expenses, but it does not establish the commission or spread that will apply to a particular investor’s transaction. For ETF comparisons, record these items separately: the annual operating expense ratio and waiver terms; the broker’s applicable commission; the observed bid-ask spread; and the relationship between market price and NAV. This makes clear which cost is stated by the fund and which depends on how and when shares are traded.
Compare risk on a like-for-like basis
Risk is not a single number. Assess the fund’s exposure and construction first, then use numerical measures to add context. A sector fund can be more sensitive to sector-specific developments than a broad-market fund. In its XLE filing, State Street explains that concentrating assets in energy makes the fund more affected by energy-sector performance than a more diversified fund. The filing also describes energy issuers’ exposure to fluctuations in energy prices and supply and demand, and notes that commodity markets can be significantly volatile. Vanguard’s fact sheet warns that sector and non-diversification risks may lead to more extreme performance fluctuations than in the overall stock market. State Street XLE filing, Vanguard fact sheet.
Issuer concentration and fund construction add another layer. Invesco says its Energy Fund invests solely in the energy sector and may hold a limited number of securities, so a change in the value of one holding could significantly affect the investment’s value. That example shows why it is important to read a fund’s own concentration disclosures rather than infer diversification from its category name. Invesco Energy Fund.
Use numerical measures carefully
Common comparison measures include volatility, tracking error, and drawdowns, but they answer different questions. Volatility summarizes how much returns fluctuated under a defined calculation; tracking error describes how closely a fund’s returns varied relative to its benchmark; and a drawdown captures a decline from a prior high over a specified interval. None is a complete risk assessment on its own.

Vanguard reported VDE’s three-year standard deviation as 19.80% as of July 31, 2026. This is one fund’s dated statistic, not evidence that it is more or less risky than another energy fund. Vanguard VDE product page.
For a useful comparison, align the measurement period, end date, benchmark, and calculation convention. A three-year statistic for one fund cannot be compared cleanly with a five-year statistic for another, or with a figure calculated against a different benchmark. If the providers do not disclose the same convention or period, label the mismatch and avoid treating the numbers as a ranking. Pair the figures with the holdings and concentration review: historical variability cannot tell you on its own which companies or subsectors drive the exposure.
Make the benchmark explicit when reading tracking error: it is a comparison with a reference index, so different benchmarks can produce different interpretations of how closely a fund has tracked. Likewise, a volatility statistic such as standard deviation describes fluctuations over a stated measurement window, not a forecast of what will happen next. A drawdown gives context about a decline from a previous high during a specified interval, but it also depends on the interval observed. When one provider reports a statistic and another does not, treat the missing figure as unavailable rather than assuming it is zero or estimating it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical process for comparing two or more funds
Work through the same sequence for each candidate, using current documents and recording the dates. This keeps a headline figure—such as an expense ratio or holdings count—from standing in for a complete comparison.
Recommended Free Tools
- Collect current documents. Find each fund’s latest prospectus, holdings list, and fund materials. Record document dates and holdings as-of dates, and check whether a newer filing or fee waiver changes the comparison.
- Write down the mandate. Record the objective, benchmark or active approach, eligible market, and relevant construction rules. Mark differences in geography, company size, or index methodology.
- Review portfolio composition. Compare the largest issuers, their combined weight, the holdings count, and subsector exposure. Keep the snapshot dates visible so older data is not mistaken for current holdings.
- Normalize fund-level expenses. Use total annual operating expenses from the prospectus and note waivers or reimbursements. Do not describe date-specific figures as a current peer ranking.
- Add transaction-related costs. Check applicable commissions, bid-ask spreads, and whether ETF shares may trade above or below NAV. These depend on trading access and execution, not just the fund’s annual expense ratio.
- Compare risk disclosures. Note sector and issuer concentration, sensitivity to energy prices and supply-demand conditions, and any limitations on diversification described by the fund.
- Align risk statistics. Compare volatility, tracking error, drawdowns, and other reported measures only when periods, benchmarks, and calculation conventions are comparable.
- Mark what is not comparable. If a figure is missing, stale, or calculated differently, say so in your notes rather than filling the gap with an estimate. Recheck volatile details before making a decision.
A compact comparison sheet can have one row per fund and separate columns for mandate, benchmark, holdings date, number of holdings, largest positions and combined weight, subsectors, annual operating expenses, waiver terms, trading costs, and dated risk statistics. This layout is more useful than a single score because it shows where candidates differ and where the available figures are not aligned. If you cannot populate a column from current fund materials, mark it as unknown instead of treating another fund’s disclosure as a substitute.

What an energy fund does—and does not—diversify
Owning an energy fund can provide exposure to companies in that sector, but sector exposure is not the same as broad-market diversification. A fund can hold many energy companies and still be concentrated in one sector; it can also have a large share of assets in a few issuers or subsectors. Read the holdings and risk disclosures to understand those layers rather than treating the label “energy” or the number of holdings as a proxy for a broadly diversified portfolio.
The comparison is most useful when it answers distinct questions: what the fund is designed to own, what it currently owns, what the disclosed recurring expenses are, what trading may add, and what risks its construction and exposures create. Those answers can clarify differences between funds without implying that one is appropriate for every investor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a fund with more holdings automatically more diversified?
No. The number of holdings is only one piece of context. Check the largest issuer weights and their combined share, as well as subsector exposure and the fund’s overall energy-sector concentration. A fund can hold many securities but still depend heavily on a few issuers or remain concentrated in one sector.

What is the difference between an expense ratio and trading costs?
The total annual operating expense ratio is a recurring fund-level expense disclosed in the prospectus. Brokerage commissions, ETF bid-ask spreads, and the difference between a share’s market price and NAV can add transaction-related costs. The latter depend on the brokerage arrangement and circumstances of a trade, so the expense ratio alone does not capture every cost.
Why should I compare an energy fund with its benchmark?
The benchmark or active mandate helps explain which securities the fund is designed to own and how its portfolio is constructed. Funds with different eligible markets, company-size coverage, or index rules may have different holdings and results even though both are described as energy funds. Tracking error also needs a stated benchmark to be meaningful.
Can I compare one fund’s three-year standard deviation with another fund’s five-year figure?
Not as a clean like-for-like comparison. Align the measurement period, end date, benchmark where relevant, and calculation convention. Vanguard reported VDE’s three-year standard deviation as 19.80% as of July 31, 2026; that dated statistic is an example for one fund, not a peer ranking or a forecast.
Does an energy-sector fund provide broad-market diversification?
Not by itself. Sector exposure is different from broad-market diversification. Review the fund’s issuer and subsector exposures and its risk disclosures to understand how much exposure is concentrated in energy and whether a few holdings have a large influence.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe Bottom Line
Compare an energy fund’s mandate and benchmark, dated holdings and concentration, prospectus operating expenses and waiver terms, transaction-related costs, and risk measures over aligned periods. Holdings counts and expense ratios are useful inputs, but neither one alone captures diversification, total trading costs, or overall risk.
