IVF and embryo transfer are not competing alternatives: IVF is one way to produce embryos, while embryo transfer (ET) is the procedure used to place an embryo in a recipient female. Compared with conventional breeding, ET can increase the genetic contribution of selected donors, but it does not guarantee a higher pregnancy rate or more calves. The right comparison depends on whether you mean natural service or artificial insemination (AI), which pregnancy outcome you measure, and whether the added genetics justify the production, transfer, and recipient-management costs.
First, separate embryo production from breeding method
The terms “IVF” and “embryo transfer” describe different parts of a reproductive program. IVF—also called in vitro embryo production (IVP)—describes producing embryos outside the donor’s body. ET describes placing an embryo into a recipient female. An embryo can be produced in the donor through a stimulated in vivo process and recovered, or produced in a laboratory through oocyte collection, maturation, fertilization, and culture. Either type can then be transferred to a recipient, subject to the program’s protocol. The distinction matters because an IVF embryo is not itself a transfer, pregnancy, or calf. A 2023 review of IVP in cattle discusses the production and use of in vitro-produced embryos.
“Conventional breeding” is also ambiguous. It may mean natural service, in which a bull mates with a female, or AI, in which semen is placed in the female reproductive tract. Some comparisons include both. The outcome literature summarized here focuses chiefly on AI as the comparator, so its findings should not be treated as a direct natural-service-versus-ET trial.
| Approach | What happens | Why an operation might choose it | Important comparison point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural service | A bull mates with the cow or heifer. | It is a conventional route when bulls and the operation’s management are suitable. | The cited ET outcome sources chiefly compare ET with AI, not natural service; they do not establish a natural-service pregnancy-rate comparison. |
| Artificial insemination (AI) | Semen is placed in the female reproductive tract; pregnancy depends on successful ovulation, fertilization, embryo development, and maternal support. | It provides a way to use selected sires without keeping a bull and is the main comparator in the cited ET literature. | Results depend on timing, fertility, animal class, and management; there is no universal AI rate in the evidence reviewed. |
| In vivo embryo production followed by ET | A donor is stimulated to produce multiple embryos; embryos are recovered and transferred to recipients. | It can multiply the genetic contribution of selected donors. | Donor response, embryo viability, recipient readiness, transfer technique, and pregnancy loss can affect results. Hansen’s 2020 review describes these constraints. |
| IVF/IVP followed by ET | Oocytes are collected, matured and fertilized in a laboratory, then embryos are cultured and suitable embryos transferred. Depending on the protocol, transfer may use fresh or frozen embryos. | It allows use of oocytes from selected donors without relying on the same in vivo embryo-recovery route. | Laboratory production and culture affect embryo competence, and recipient management and pregnancy loss still matter. An embryo yield is not a pregnancy or calf count. The 2023 review covers challenges in wider IVP use. |
What each method changes—and what it cannot control
Natural service and AI create pregnancies through breeding
With natural service or AI, fertilization and early embryo development occur within the female. AI allows a producer to use a selected sire without keeping a bull, but it does not remove the biological steps required for pregnancy. Ovulation, fertilization, early development, and the female’s ability to support a pregnancy all remain relevant. The cited comparisons do not establish a single AI success rate that applies across cattle classes or management systems.

ET moves an embryo into a recipient
ET changes where an embryo comes from and how it enters the recipient’s reproductive tract; it does not make recipient fertility irrelevant. The embryo has already passed some early developmental steps before transfer, so ET can bypass certain early reproductive failure points. But the recipient still has to sustain the pregnancy. Hansen’s review concludes that pregnancy success after ET is generally similar to AI, with exceptions in some low-fertility situations, including heat stress and repeat-breeder females. Its explanation is that underlying female fertility may affect embryo survival before transfer and after transfer alike. Read the review’s discussion of pregnancy outcomes and constraints.
IVF adds a laboratory stage, not a guarantee of success
IVF/IVP introduces additional steps between donor genetics and a recipient pregnancy: oocyte collection, laboratory maturation and fertilization, and embryo culture. Embryo competence can vary with production and culture conditions. The recent review of pregnancy loss in cattle also identifies recipient class, synchronization protocol, breed, and semen type as factors that may influence outcomes in the studies it covers. These variables mean a result from one lab, recipient group, or protocol should not automatically be projected onto another. The review on pregnancy loss in cattle addresses these influences in ET programs.
Compare like with like: pregnancy is not the same as a calf
A pregnancy percentage only answers a useful question when its denominator and timing are clear. Pregnancy per insemination, pregnancy per transfer, pregnancy maintenance to a later check, and calves born are different endpoints. An early pregnancy check does not by itself report how many pregnancies will continue to calving. Comparisons also need to identify the animal class, lactation status, embryo origin and handling, recipient fertility, and whether losses after the initial check are included.

The groups differ, and the percentages are drawn from cited studies rather than a single controlled comparison of all methods. They also describe pregnancy at an early point, not pregnancy maintenance or calving.

The same review describes an idealized expectation of up to 100% pregnancy per ET only under the condition that a live embryo is placed correctly. That is a theoretical ceiling, not an observed result or guarantee: dead embryos and transfer errors reduce the expectation, while recipient fertility affects the chance of maintaining pregnancy. Hansen, 2020 makes this distinction while discussing why ET pregnancy rates are not automatically higher than AI.
A 2020 experimental study reported similar pregnancy rates and pregnancy maintenance between its AI and ET groups under the study’s conditions. It also measured cleavage and blastocyst yields under particular culture conditions. Those laboratory-stage results have their own denominators and are not general IVF success rates for farms. The study’s methods and results should be consulted for the specific experimental conditions before drawing a narrower comparison.
Trace the outcome through the whole program
For a practical comparison, think in stages rather than treating one percentage as the answer. With AI, the relevant starting denominator might be inseminations; with ET, it might be transfers. For an IVF program, an earlier production measure could be oocytes collected or embryos produced, but neither is interchangeable with embryos transferred. Then distinguish an initial positive pregnancy check from pregnancy maintenance and, finally, calves born. Each stage answers a different question: how embryos were produced, how often a transfer or insemination resulted in a detected pregnancy, and how many pregnancies ultimately yielded calves.
Ask whether reported losses occurred before or after the stated pregnancy check and whether the figure counts every recipient or only those receiving an embryo judged suitable for transfer. Without those details, even two accurately reported percentages may describe different stages of the process. The comparison should also keep animal groups aligned where possible: heifers and lactating cows are not the same population, and the review’s study values illustrate that pregnancy outcomes vary by class.
How to decide whether ET or IVF fits the breeding objective
ET and IVF/IVP are most relevant when the operation has a reason to produce more offspring from particular donor genetics. If the goal is simply to breed females using selected sires, AI may address that objective without adding embryo production and transfer steps. If the objective is to expand the contribution of selected donors, ET or IVF followed by ET may be worth evaluating—but genetic potential only has economic value if the resulting calves are useful to the herd or can be sold at a premium.

- Define “conventional” for the comparison. Decide whether the baseline is natural service, AI, or both. Do not use AI findings as though they established natural-service outcomes.
- Name the genetic objective. Identify which donor animals matter, which traits are valuable, and how many additional offspring from those genetics the operation can use or sell.
- Choose a shared outcome and time point. Compare pregnancy per insemination with pregnancy per transfer only if the question calls for those denominators; for a production decision, also consider maintenance to later checks and calves born.
- Assess recipient capacity. Consider whether suitable recipients can be synchronized and managed, and how recipient fertility and environment may affect results. A donor’s genetic merit does not substitute for recipient readiness.
- Map the full cost of the program. Include donor procedures, laboratory production, embryo purchase where applicable, transfer, synchronization, recipient upkeep, and veterinary work. The evidence here does not support a general current dollar quote.
- Set the investment horizon and calf-value assumption. Replacement needs, sale value, and any achievable genetic premium affect whether extra production and transfer costs can be recovered.
For an operation-specific comparison, ask the reproductive veterinarian or service provider to state the expected endpoint and its denominator, the animal classes and protocols behind the estimate, how pregnancy losses are counted, and which services are included in the quoted cost. A percentage without these details is difficult to compare with another program’s figure.

Before choosing a route, write down the baseline and the proposed program side by side. For each, record the genetic aim, what outcome is being forecast, the animal class, recipient requirements, and the costs included. In an ET or IVP-ET estimate, confirm whether donor procedures, lab production, transfer, synchronization, recipient upkeep, and veterinary work are separate charges or part of a package. If embryos are purchased, include that expense; if calves may command a premium, use a realistic sale assumption rather than assuming every additional calf earns one.
Then test the decision against the operation’s actual use for the resulting calves. A program can produce more offspring from selected donors yet still be a poor fit if the herd cannot use or market them at a value that supports the added work and expense. Conversely, a genetic premium or replacement need may change the calculation. The published model below illustrates why those assumptions matter, but it cannot substitute for a farm-specific budget or current local service quote.
What the published economic model does—and does not—show
A 2017 dairy-herd simulation compared an exclusive IVP-ET system with AI over a modeled 15-year investment. Its default production-and-transfer cost was $165 per embryo as a model assumption. In one specified comparison that included premium-priced surplus calves, it estimated a fresh-embryo break-even price of $84. In that model, economic parity depended on the premium prices received for those calves. Kaniyamattam and colleagues’ 2017 study reports the model and its assumptions.
Those figures are not current service prices, a quote for a particular farm, or a transferable recommendation for beef and dairy operations generally. They are outputs and inputs from a historical scenario model. The useful lesson is the dependency: economic results can change when embryo costs, production assumptions, and the value of surplus calves change. Recalculate with the operation’s own costs, herd goals, recipient capacity, and realistic calf values rather than treating the modeled break-even price as a market benchmark.

The $165 figure is the model’s default production-and-transfer cost, not a claim about the price of an embryo today. Likewise, the $84 result is a break-even estimate for one modeled fresh-embryo comparison, not a universal threshold at which every operation should switch from AI. The study’s 15-year horizon and premium-calve scenario are integral to how to interpret those numbers. Ask what happens to the calculation if expected calf premiums are lower, surplus calves cannot be sold at a premium, or the operation’s own costs and herd objectives differ from the modeled assumptions.

- Calling IVF and ET alternatives. IVF is a method of embryo production; ET is the placement procedure. IVF-produced embryos may be used in ET.
- Using “conventional breeding” without defining it. Natural service and AI are distinct baselines, and the cited ET literature mainly compares with AI.
- Equating embryo production with calves. Oocytes, cleavage, blastocysts, transferred embryos, early pregnancies, maintained pregnancies, and calves born are successive but different measures.
- Comparing percentages from different animal groups as if they were a trial. The day 6–8 figures summarized above come from cited studies in different groups, not one universal head-to-head experiment.
- Treating ET’s theoretical maximum as a field result. The idealized up-to-100% expectation assumes a live embryo is correctly placed; it is neither an observed general rate nor a guarantee.
- Ignoring the recipient and environment. Transfer does not eliminate the importance of female fertility, recipient synchronization, or pregnancy loss.
- Applying a modeled break-even price as a current quote. The 2017 result depends on that model’s assumptions, including premium calf values, and is not a current market price.
What the science says about the promise of embryo transfer
Hansen’s 2020 review captures both the history and the ambition of the technology: “The ability to achieve pregnancy through the transfer of an embryo into the reproductive tract of a cyclic female, achieved for the first time in 1891 using the rabbit but not translated to routine practice in cattle until the 1970s, has been an extraordinary scientific success.” The quoted sentence appears in the review. Its significance for a cattle producer is not that transfer removes reproductive uncertainty; it is that embryos can be moved between a selected genetic source and a recipient, creating a different route to multiply genetics with its own biological and management constraints.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are IVF and embryo transfer the same thing in cattle?
No. IVF, also called in vitro embryo production (IVP), is a way to produce embryos outside the donor through oocyte collection, laboratory maturation and fertilization, and culture. ET is the procedure that places an embryo into a recipient. An embryo can also be produced in vivo and then transferred.
Does ET or IVF have a higher pregnancy rate than AI?
Not as a universal rule. Hansen’s 2020 review says pregnancy success after ET is generally similar to AI, with exceptions in some low-fertility situations such as heat stress and repeat-breeder females. Outcomes depend on animal class, fertility, embryo origin and handling, recipient readiness, and the pregnancy-check endpoint. IVF adds embryo-production variables; it does not guarantee a pregnancy.
Why can transferring an embryo fail to produce a calf?
An embryo may not be viable, a transfer may not be successful, or a recipient may not maintain the pregnancy. ET can bypass some failures before the blastocyst stage, but it does not remove the need for recipient fertility or eliminate pregnancy loss. An early pregnancy result is not the same as a calf born.

What pregnancy-rate figures should I use when comparing methods?
Use figures with the same denominator, time point, animal class, and outcome definition. The day 6–8 proportions summarized by Hansen—84% for cited beef-heifer studies, 72% for a cited dairy-heifer study, 58% for cited lactating beef-cow studies, and 52% for a cited lactating dairy-cow study—are contextual values, not a universal head-to-head comparison or calving rates. Do not compare them directly with a transfer figure unless the populations and endpoints are comparable.
How much does cattle embryo transfer or IVF cost?
The cited evidence does not provide a general current price. Costs can involve donor procedures, laboratory production or embryo purchase, transfer, synchronization, recipient upkeep, and veterinary work. A 2017 dairy-herd model used $165 per embryo as a production-and-transfer cost assumption and estimated an $84 fresh-embryo break-even price in one specified scenario; those historical model figures are not current quotes.
When might AI be a better fit than IVF/ET?
If the objective is to breed females using selected sires, AI may address it without adding embryo production and transfer steps. ET or IVF followed by ET may be worth evaluating when producing more offspring from selected donor genetics has value, but that value must justify the program’s costs and recipient-management demands.

The Bottom Line
Choose the method by the breeding objective, not by assuming IVF or ET guarantees more pregnancies. Define whether the baseline is natural service or AI, compare the same pregnancy endpoint and animal class, and account for recipient fertility, losses, full program costs, and the value of resulting calves. ET and IVF/IVP can expand the contribution of selected donors; whether they are worthwhile depends on the operation’s genetics, management capacity, and economics.
