Compare edge rushers on separate axes, not with one headline number: pressure rate measures disruption per pass-rush snap, sacks measure completed quarterback takedowns, and run defense requires its own run-specific rate and denominator. Use the same season, competition, provider definitions, and minimum snap threshold for every player, then add alignment, blocking help, and opportunity volume before drawing a conclusion.
What each metric actually measures
An edge rusher can win in several ways. A defender may force the quarterback to move, hurry a throw, hit the quarterback, or finish the play with a sack. Those outcomes overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A useful comparison keeps pass-rush efficiency, finishing production, and run defense in distinct columns.
Pressure rate: frequency of disruption
NFL Next Gen Stats defines pressure rate as total pressures divided by total pass-rush snaps. In other words:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pressure rate = pressures ÷ pass-rush snaps
The denominator matters as much as the percentage. A 15% rate on 80 rushes is much less evidence than a 12% rate on 500 rushes. Always display the pass-rush-snap total beside the rate and confirm that every player was measured by the same provider and definition.

In the NFL Next Gen Stats pressure-probability model, a pass-rush play is treated as pressure when the model’s pressure probability exceeds 75%. The concept includes sacks, quarterback hits, hurries, and other qualifying quarterback-affecting outcomes. Consequently, a player can have a lower sack total but still create more disruption overall.
Sacks: the finishing outcome
A sack is a pressure that ends with the quarterback brought down before the pass. It has obvious field position and turnover consequences, so it deserves its own column. It is also a relatively infrequent event and depends on the quarterback holding the ball long enough for the rush to reach him.
The NFL Next Gen Stats analytics team states: "The opportunity of a defender to generate pressure directly depends on how long the quarterback holds onto the ball." A quarterback who throws quickly can prevent a sack even when an edge rusher wins immediately. Conversely, a coverage breakdown or a quarterback who extends the play can give a rusher extra time to finish.

Run defense: a different assignment
Pressure rate and sacks describe pass-rush work. They do not establish whether an edge defender sets a strong edge, defeats a run block, closes a cutback lane, or makes a tackle for loss. Evaluate those jobs with a run-specific statistic and show the number of eligible run-defense snaps used to calculate it.
Set fair comparison conditions first
Before collecting numbers, lock the conditions that make the comparison meaningful. A table mixing regular-season data from different years, tracking definitions, or snap thresholds can look precise while answering no clear question.
- Choose the season and competition. State whether you are comparing NFL regular-season plays, postseason plays, or both. Do not combine them silently.
- Use one data provider. Charted pressures, tracking-defined pressures, and team-assigned sacks may follow different attribution rules. Keep the provider constant or label every change explicitly.
- Set a minimum opportunity threshold. A rate from a small number of pass-rush snaps is volatile. Pick a threshold before looking at the rankings, and publish each player’s snap total.
- Record role and alignment. Note whether the defender is a traditional defensive end, outside linebacker, stand-up edge, or a player who frequently drops into coverage. Role changes the number and type of rush opportunities.
- Separate pass and run denominators. Pass-rush snaps belong under pressure statistics; run-defense snaps belong under run statistics. Never use total defensive snaps as a substitute without saying so.
- Preserve the date of the data. The official examples cited below are historical reference points, not a 2026 leaderboard.
Build a comparison sheet that exposes the evidence
A compact player card should let a reader see efficiency, volume, finishing, timing, run value, and context in one place.
| Axis | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Pass-rush efficiency | Pressure rate and total pass-rush snaps | Shows how often disruption occurs per opportunity and how stable the rate is. |
| Total disruption | Pressure total | Shows the amount of pressure generated, which a rate alone can hide. |
| Finishing | Sacks and sack total | Shows how often disruption becomes a quarterback takedown. |
| Speed | Quick-pressure rate or time to pressure, if defined by the provider | Helps identify immediate wins before coverage, quarterback movement, or extended-play effects accumulate. |
| Run defense | A stated run-stop, stuff, or run-defense rate plus run-defense snaps | Measures a separate job with an explicit opportunity denominator. |
| Context | Alignment, role, chips, double teams, opponent quality, and coverage usage | Explains why raw opportunities and outcomes differ. |
If a source does not publish a comparable value, write "not stated" and identify the source. Do not fill an unknown cell with an estimate.

How to interpret pressure rate correctly
Read the percentage with its denominator
Pressure rate is an efficiency measure, not a workload measure. A high percentage on limited snaps may indicate genuine dominance, but it is also more sensitive to a few plays. A lower percentage on a very large workload may represent more total disruption and greater evidence of repeatability. Report both rate and pressure total rather than ranking players by the percentage alone.
NFL Next Gen Stats gives a 10.3% league-wide average pressure rate in its pressure-probability explainer. That figure is a general pass-rusher benchmark from an undated explainer, not a current-season average for edge rushers. Quote it only with that qualification; it should not be treated as a cutoff for a 2026 ranking.
Check the underlying definition
Ask what counts as a pressure, who receives credit when two defenders affect the quarterback, and whether the statistic comes from tracking or manual charting. Two percentages with the same label can differ materially if one provider includes quarterback hits and hurries differently or assigns shared pressure differently.
Use timing measures as supporting evidence
NFL Next Gen Stats defines a quick pressure as one occurring within the first 2.5 seconds of the snap. Quick-pressure rate can reveal immediate wins that are less dependent on a quarterback holding the ball for an unusually long time. It still is not a perfect individual-skill measure: stunt design, protection calls, alignment, and the quarterback’s release all influence the result.

That is a source-specific reference point, not a universal target. Compare time values only when the timing method, play selection, and provider are identical.
Consider pressure rate over expected
Pressure rate over expected is the difference between average pressure probability and pressure probability at the snap in the NFL model. It attempts to separate what happened from what the alignment and situation predicted before the play. A positive value suggests the defender generated more pressure than the model expected; it does not replace observed pressure rate, pressure total, or film review.
Use sacks as finishing production, not as the whole grade
Why sack totals are valuable
Sacks end drives, create lost yardage, and can force fumbles. They are easy to communicate and often determine how opponents protect against a rusher. Include them in every comparison.

Why sacks undercount disruption
A quarterback can release the ball just before contact, throw the ball away, or scramble out of the pocket after an edge rusher wins. Those plays may register as a hit, hurry, or another qualifying pressure but not a sack. Quick passing games also reduce the time available for a finish. Therefore, a sack leader is not automatically the most efficient or disruptive rusher.

Read sacks beside pressures
Place sack totals next to pressure totals and pressure rate. This lets the reader distinguish a player who creates frequent disruption from one who converts a smaller number of opportunities into takedowns. A sack-to-pressure ratio can be descriptive, but do not present it as a universal skill grade without checking attribution rules and sample size. A provider may credit a shared sack or pressure differently, and a small pressure total can make the ratio unstable.
Score run defense on its own axis
Choose and define a run metric
Possible measures include run stops, stuffs, tackles for loss, run-stop rate, or a tracking-based run-stop measure. Pick one that is available for every player and define exactly what counts. Then show the run-defense-snap denominator and the number of run plays included.
Understand the evidence limits
The reviewed NFL example describes an interior defensive lineman, Jeffery Simmons, stuffing runners at or behind the line on 8.1% of his run-defense snaps during the 2025 season. The 8.1% figure illustrates a rate with an explicit opportunity denominator; it is not an edge-rusher benchmark and should not be used as a league-wide standard for the position.
Edge responsibilities also vary. One player may be asked to spill runs inside so a linebacker can make the tackle; another may be responsible for keeping outside leverage and recording fewer tackles. A raw tackle or stuff total can therefore reward the wrong assignment. Include alignment, gap responsibility, and scheme when the data provide them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not infer run value from pass-rush results
A high pressure rate does not prove that a defender sets the edge well, just as a modest sack total does not prove poor run defense. Keep the run metric in a separate column and discuss the trade-off directly when a player’s pass-rush and run-defense results point in different directions.
Add blocking and quarterback context
Account for chips and double teams
Protection changes the opportunity presented to a rusher. A chip block can delay the rush without becoming a formal double team; a two-player protection can force the edge defender to absorb help while another teammate receives a favorable matchup. NFL Next Gen Stats says its matchup model identifies blockers, chip blocks, and double teams and can attribute pressures and sacks to individual blockers.

When those fields are available, report the share of snaps faced with extra attention. Do not assume every unblocked pressure is a superior individual win or that every low-pressure game reflects poor technique.
Separate individual wins from play and quarterback effects
NFL analysis has identified several ways a pressure can occur: the rusher can beat the blocker, the quarterback can leave a clean pocket, or the quarterback can hold the ball because coverage or receiver separation prevents an immediate throw. Quick pressures under 2.5 seconds remove many of those later-play variables, but they still depend on scheme and protection.

An edge defender who drops into coverage often has fewer pass-rush snaps than a specialist who rushes on nearly every passing down. Compare like roles where possible, or explain the role difference instead of treating fewer opportunities as lower ability.
A step-by-step workflow for comparing two players
- Define the question. Decide whether you are looking for the most efficient rusher, the largest total workload, the best finisher, the fastest disruptor, the strongest run defender, or the best all-around edge.
- Fix the scope. Write down the season, regular-season or postseason status, provider, position filter, and minimum pass-rush and run-defense snaps.
- Collect opportunity counts first. Record pass-rush snaps and run-defense snaps before copying percentages. This prevents a rate from being read without its denominator.
- Enter pressure results. Add pressure rate, pressure total, and the provider’s definition. If available, add quick pressures and pressure rate over expected.
- Enter finishing results. Add sacks and note whether shared sacks or assisted outcomes are handled consistently.
- Enter run results. Add the selected run-specific metric, its formula, and the run-defense-snap denominator. Do not substitute a pass-rush statistic.
- Review context. Add alignment, percentage of snaps in coverage, opponent quality, chip blocks, double teams, and protection matchups when available.
- Check stability. Flag very small samples, unusual game scripts, injuries, and large changes in role. A percentage without adequate opportunity should be described as provisional.
- Write the conclusion by axis. Identify who is more efficient, who produced more total disruption, who finished more plays, and who defended runs better. Only then state which player fits the reader’s stated priority.
How to read common stat combinations
High pressure rate, low sack total
This profile can describe a quick disruptor who forces hurried throws but faces rapid quarterback releases or loses finishing opportunities to teammates. Check pressure total, quick-pressure rate, quarterback time to throw, and whether the player was credited consistently.
Low pressure rate, high sack total
This may reflect a smaller sample, a few long-developing plays, favorable coverage, or unusually good conversion on limited pressures. Check pass-rush snaps and pressure total before calling the player a high-efficiency rusher.
High pressure and sack totals, weak run metric
The player may be a valuable passing-down specialist rather than a complete every-down edge. The run-defense denominator and assignment should be reviewed before making that distinction.
Strong run metric, modest pass-rush numbers
This can be the profile of a setting-the-edge defender whose value is not captured by sack totals. Check whether the scheme asks the player to occupy blockers, spill runs, or drop into coverage.

Similar rates, very different workloads
Prefer the larger sample for confidence, but do not ignore role. A high-volume rusher may see more chips, better opponents, and predictable passing situations, while a rotational player may face fresher matchups. The workload itself is part of the evaluation.
Common comparison mistakes and fixes
- Ranking by sacks alone: Add pressure rate, pressure total, and pass-rush snaps.
- Ranking by pressure rate alone: Add volume, role, and sample-size warnings.
- Using total defensive snaps as the denominator: Use pass-rush snaps for pressure and run-defense snaps for run metrics.
- Mixing providers: Keep definitions constant or label the source change prominently.
- Calling every pressure a clean win: Check quarterback movement, coverage, protection, and timing.
- Ignoring chips and doubles: Add blocker-matchup context when tracking data identify it.
- Using an interior-lineman benchmark for edges: Treat the 8.1% 2025 stuff-rate example as an illustration, not an edge standard.
- Presenting an old benchmark as current: Date the 10.3% average, 2.9-second average time, and 2025 example, and retrieve current-season data before making live claims.
- Inventing a universal run-defense grade: Name the provider and definition; no single standardized NFL edge run-defense statistic is established by the evidence here.
A practical reporting template
Use a table like this for each comparison and fill every value from the same data release:
| Player | Pass-rush snaps | Pressure rate | Pressures | Sacks | Quick-pressure rate | Run metric | Run-defense snaps | Role and blocking notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Edge A | Record source value | Record source value | Record source value | Record source value | Not stated if unavailable | Record defined run measure | Record source value | Alignment, coverage, chips, doubles |
| Edge B | Record source value | Record source value | Record source value | Record source value | Not stated if unavailable | Record defined run measure | Record source value | Alignment, coverage, chips, doubles |
After the table, answer five separate questions: Who was more efficient per rush? Who generated more total disruption? Who finished more plays with sacks? Who disrupted fastest when timing data exist? Who supplied greater run value under the stated definition? If the answers differ, that is the result—not a problem to hide with one blended score.
What the available NFL tracking evidence supports
NFL Next Gen Stats pressure-probability models have historical data for every pass play since 2018, according to the matchup-model description. That makes multi-season comparisons possible when the same definitions and filters are retained. It does not make a rate automatically comparable across changing roles, schemes, or sample sizes.
The core pressure concepts are well defined by official NFL material, while a universal edge-specific run-defense statistic is not established here. For a current-season ranking, retrieve the latest data, record the retrieval date, preserve the provider’s definitions, and apply a transparent snap threshold. Do not present the 10.3% pressure average or 2.9-second time-to-pressure figure as 2026 edge-league leaders, and do not present the 8.1% 2025 interior-defender stuff rate as an edge benchmark.
Bottom line for decision-making
There is no single best number for an edge rusher. Pressure rate tells you how frequently the defender disrupts a pass play; sacks tell you how often that disruption becomes a takedown; and a separately defined run-defense rate tells you what happens on running plays. The strongest comparison shows all three with their snap denominators, then adjusts the interpretation for timing, role, protection, quarterback behavior, and sample size.
