The fairest comparison is simultaneous, timestamp-aligned recording during the same workout. Use a chest strap as a practical personal reference, not an infallible clinical standard; then examine bias, absolute error, missing intervals, and response to intensity changes rather than comparing one device’s average with another device’s peak. Earbud and watch performance depends on the product, fit, sensor location, movement, skin conditions, and the app that saved the workout.
What you are actually comparing
These devices measure the same physiological signal from different body locations and with different sensing methods. That means disagreement can be real, but it can also come from timing, fit, motion, or a missing sample rather than from one device being universally “wrong.”
| Device type | Sensor and location | Important influences on the reading |
|---|---|---|
| Heart-rate earbuds | In-ear optical sensing in supported models | Earbud position and stability, movement, the product’s signal-quality rules, and whether the app records the earbud stream |
| Apple Watch | Wrist photoplethysmography (optical sensing) | Snugness and position, skin perfusion, cold conditions, some tattoos, and motion |
| Bluetooth chest strap | Chest-worn electrical signal; the Polar H10 was an ECG-derived reference in the cited AirPods study | Electrode contact, strap placement, connection, and the particular strap’s design and processing |
A chest strap is often the most useful reference for a personal workout comparison because it measures electrical activity close to the heart and usually responds quickly to intensity changes. That is a practical choice, not proof that every consumer strap is a clinical gold standard. The published AirPods Pro 3 validation used a specifically identified Polar H10; its result should not be transferred automatically to every chest strap.

Record all devices at the same time, keep the activity and recording window identical, and align the streams by timestamp before calculating differences. The following procedure gives you a repeatable personal comparison.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Choose one workout and one question. Decide whether you care about steady-state accuracy, interval response, or performance during a particular sport. A five-minute steady run answers a different question from a tennis match with repeated direction changes.
- Wear every device simultaneously. Put the earbuds in their normal listening position, fasten the Watch snugly on the top of the wrist, and place the chest strap according to its instructions. Do not compare separate workouts and assume the physiological conditions were equivalent.
- Use one start and stop window. Start recording on each device as close together as possible, note the clock time, and stop them at the same end point. Record any delay caused by an app countdown or workout-screen interaction.
- Keep the activity controlled. For an initial test, use a steady effort that you can repeat. If you normally train with intervals, add a separate interval session rather than mixing it with the steady test.
- Save the original records. Export or retain the workout files from the earbud-compatible app, Apple Watch workout record, and chest-strap app. Check which source the app actually stored when multiple heart-rate monitors were connected; do not infer the source from the number shown on screen.
- Put all timestamps on one time base. Convert times to the same clock and account for recording start offsets. Preserve the original sampling times instead of averaging the files immediately.
- Match observations in time. Pair readings that represent the same interval. If one stream is sampled more often, aggregate it to the slower stream or use a clearly documented interpolation method. The 2026 AirPods Pro 3 study aggregated synchronized streams into non-overlapping five-second epochs; that demonstrates why alignment matters, but it is not a mandatory consumer protocol.
- Calculate several measures. Compare signed difference over time, absolute error against your chosen reference, missing-data intervals, and the response when effort changes. Repeat on more than one day and, if relevant, more than one workout type.
Do not compare an average heart rate from one workout with a peak from another. Also avoid assuming that a value displayed on two screens was updated at the same cadence; different reporting intervals can make one device appear to “lag” when the timestamps simply do not match.
Which measures show agreement?
A single average can conceal useful failures. Keep the following measures separate in your spreadsheet or analysis.
| Measure | How to calculate or inspect it | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Signed difference (bias) | Earbud or Watch value minus the reference at each matched time, then average those differences | Whether a device tends to read high or low. Positive and negative errors can cancel, so bias alone is not enough. |
| Absolute error | Take the absolute value of each matched difference and summarize it, such as with a mean or median | Typical disagreement regardless of direction. |
| Error over time | Plot the difference throughout the workout | Shows whether disagreement appears during warm-up, intervals, recovery, or a particular movement. |
| Missing-data rate | Mark intervals in which a device publishes no heart-rate value and calculate the proportion of the planned recording window | Reliability of coverage. A device may omit a value when it judges the signal inadequate. |
| Change response | Compare when each device begins rising or falling after a deliberate intensity change | Whether the device follows transitions promptly, independent of its steady-state average. |
Keep the reference definition explicit. If you use the chest strap as the reference, write that in the report and retain the strap’s raw data. “Error” then means difference from that chosen reference, not proof that the reference is perfect.

Why a chest strap is useful, but not automatically infallible
Chest straps are a sensible benchmark for a consumer comparison because their electrodes detect the heart’s electrical activity at the chest and generally avoid the wrist’s large-motion problem. They are especially useful when you are evaluating rapid interval transitions or irregular wrist movement. However, strap contact, placement, and the model’s own processing still matter. A poorly fitted strap can produce artifacts or dropouts.
The strongest product-specific evidence in the supplied material identifies a Polar H10 as the chest-worn ECG-derived reference for an AirPods Pro 3 study. That wording matters: it supports using a comparable chest strap as a practical reference in your own test, but it does not certify every strap, nor does it make the comparison a medical validation. If the strap itself shows implausible jumps or gaps, resolve that problem before treating it as the reference.

How Apple Watch measures workout heart rate
Apple describes Apple Watch workout heart rate as photoplethysmography. Green LEDs illuminate the skin, and light-sensitive photodiodes detect changes associated with blood flow. The watch is designed to sit snugly on top of the wrist so the optical path stays stable.
Apple identifies several conditions that can reduce performance: low skin perfusion, environmental conditions such as cold, some tattoos, and motion. Rhythmic running or cycling can produce a cleaner signal than irregular activities such as tennis or boxing. Apple’s support guidance cautions that “Even under ideal conditions, Apple Watch may not be able to get a reliable heart rate reading every time for everybody.”
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If you cannot obtain a consistent reading, Apple says you can connect the Watch wirelessly to an external Bluetooth heart-rate monitor such as a chest strap. That option changes the sensor source; it does not mean the Watch’s optical sensor has been repaired or that its historical readings will be replaced.
How earbud readings and Apple Watch streams can interact
Apple documents heart-rate tracking during workouts with AirPods Pro 3 and says AirPods Pro 3 and Apple Watch can provide multiple heart-rate streams for broader coverage. The exact source surfaced by a workout screen or saved by an app can depend on the product and app behavior. When the distinction matters, inspect the recorded workout data and the connected-device details instead of assuming that the largest or most recent number came from a particular sensor.
This source check is essential in a three-device comparison. If the Watch is paired to a chest strap while earbuds are also connected, a displayed Watch value may not represent the wrist optical stream you intended to test. Save a run with one known configuration first, then add the other monitor and verify how the app labels the resulting data.

What published evidence says about accuracy
| Evidence | Protocol and reference | Reported result | What you may and may not conclude |
|---|---|---|---|
| AirPods Pro 3, PLOS Digital Health, 2026 | Controlled graded treadmill validation; 40 adults; 16,735 paired five-second epochs; Polar H10 chest-worn ECG-derived reference | Mean bias of −0.03 beats per minute | The average signed difference was nearly zero in this study. It does not mean every five-second sample matched, and it does not establish performance during free-living workouts, other sports, or every wearer. |
| Apple Watch, Apple report, November 2024 | Apple’s performance table; accuracy defined as the fraction of published measurements within a specified range of a chest-strap reference; availability reported separately | For all-terrain running, 88% of measurements were within 5 beats per minute and 94% were within 10 beats per minute | These are Apple’s reported results under its stated methods, not a guarantee for an individual user. Accuracy and availability are different quantities. |
| Older earbud evidence, 2019 | A Jabra earbud and Mio Alpha wrist monitor compared with a Polar chest strap during aerobic and resistance exercise | The study demonstrates that ear-worn monitoring has been evaluated | The products and test conditions are older. The findings cannot be carried over to AirPods Pro 3 or to another current earbud without new evidence. |
The AirPods result and Apple’s Watch report answer different questions. One is an independent controlled treadmill validation of a specific earbud model; the other is Apple’s own report with its own methods and activity categories. Neither supplies a head-to-head result for AirPods Pro 3, Apple Watch, and a Polar H10 across many activities and users.
How to interpret disagreement in your own workout
A nearly constant offset
If the earbud or Watch stays consistently above or below the chest strap by a similar amount, inspect fit and timestamp alignment first. A stable offset can also reflect systematic processing differences. For training zones, document the offset rather than silently mixing thresholds calculated from different devices.
Short spikes during movement
A burst of disagreement during arm swings, lifting, or changes of direction points toward motion sensitivity or a temporary loss of optical contact. Compare the timing with the activity video or your workout notes. If only one device spikes while the others remain stable, mark the episode rather than letting it dominate the workout average.
Delayed changes after an interval
Check whether the devices publish at different intervals before concluding that one is slow. Align the first post-interval samples to the same clock time. Then compare the duration of the transition, not just the value shown when you glanced at the screen.
Gaps rather than wrong-looking numbers
Missing values are a separate result. A device may decide that the signal quality is insufficient and omit a reading. Record the length and location of every gap. A stream with a modest error when present but frequent gaps may be less useful for your training than a stream with slightly larger error and continuous coverage.

Which reading should you trust during a workout?
For a personal comparison, use the chest strap as the operational reference when it is fitted correctly and produces a continuous signal. Then select the earbud or Watch that gives you the best combination of agreement, coverage, and useful response for the activity you actually perform. Do not declare a universal winner from one treadmill protocol or from one workout on your wrist.
- For steady running or cycling: rhythmic movement is generally friendlier to Apple Watch optical sensing, so a well-fitted Watch may track closely enough for your training. Verify that with your own aligned records.
- For intervals: emphasize transition timing and missing intervals, not only the workout average. A chest strap is a practical reference for this purpose, while the earbud and Watch streams show how your chosen wearable behaves.
- For irregular sports: expect motion to matter more. Tennis and boxing are specifically identified by Apple as examples of activities in which consistent optical readings can be harder. Compare coverage and error during the exact sport rather than extrapolating from a run.
- For a workout with no strap: use the wearable that has the fewest gaps and the most repeatable results across repeated sessions. Treat its values as exercise-monitoring data, not as a diagnostic measurement.
None of these consumer readings should be used to diagnose a heart condition or to override medical advice. If a value is alarming or symptoms occur, stop the activity and seek appropriate medical care rather than resolving the question by comparing gadgets.

The files start at different times
Find the actual first timestamp containing a heart-rate value, not merely the time you tapped “Start.” Remove the unmatched leading and trailing periods, then recalculate the comparisons on the shared window.
The Watch is inconsistent
Refit it snugly on top of the wrist. Consider whether the test was performed in cold conditions, whether a tattoo crosses the sensor area, or whether the activity involved irregular arm motion. Apple recommends an external Bluetooth chest strap when a consistent reading remains difficult.
The earbud stream has unexplained gaps
Check the saved workout record and source labels. A missing interval may reflect the device’s signal-quality decision rather than a zero heart rate. Note whether the gaps coincide with movement or a change in earbud position, and repeat the same activity before drawing a conclusion.

The screen shows a value you did not expect
Review connected monitors and app behavior. Apple supports multiple heart-rate streams in some combinations, and the source presented by an app is product- and software-dependent. Use the recorded data to identify the sensor that supplied each series.
The chest strap looks unstable
Recheck electrode contact and placement, confirm that the strap is the intended connected source, and repeat the test. Do not use a noisy strap as the reference simply because it is a chest device.
Build a comparison that remains useful over time
One workout can reveal a setup problem, but repeated sessions reveal whether the behavior is consistent. Keep the same timestamp-alignment method and record the activity, environmental conditions, sensor fit, and any intervals. If your goal is general training, include at least one rhythmic workout and one activity with irregular movement. If you care only about running, you can focus on several running intensities while still testing both steady effort and intervals.

Report the result in a way another person could reproduce: identify the earbud and Watch models, the chest strap used as reference, the activity, the shared time window, the epoch or sampling method, the error summary, and the missing-data intervals. This prevents a near-zero average from being mistaken for perfect point-by-point agreement.
Limits of the available evidence
There is no cited head-to-head study covering AirPods Pro 3, Apple Watch, and Polar H10 across a broad set of activities, body types, environmental conditions, and free-living workouts. The AirPods evidence comes from a controlled graded treadmill protocol, while the Watch figures come from Apple’s report and methods. Product firmware, app compatibility, source-prioritization behavior, and retail details can change, so verify those items in the current device documentation when setting up a test.
The defensible conclusion is therefore conditional: compare your three streams under the same conditions, align their timestamps, treat the chest strap as a practical reference rather than an absolute authority, and judge each wearable by agreement, coverage, and response in the workouts that matter to you.
