The best payment platform is the one that fits your company’s registration country, customer markets, payment mix, technical setup and payout needs. Compare providers using your own transaction data rather than a headline rate. Price every payment method, check merchant eligibility and buyer coverage, verify checkout and compliance work, and confirm how funds are settled and reconciled. Official documentation from Adyen, Square and Stripe shows that availability, fees and features vary by country and use case; it does not support one universal winner.

Start with a profile of the business you actually operate

Before opening a pricing page, write down the facts that determine eligibility and cost. A platform may serve buyers in a country where it cannot onboard your business, or support cards while lacking the local wallet your customers expect.

  • Registration and operating country: Record the legal entity’s country, where your team operates and the country in which a payment account would be activated.
  • Customer locations: List the countries from which buyers pay, not just the country shown on your storefront.
  • Sales channels: Separate website checkout, mobile app, invoices, subscriptions, marketplace transactions and any in-person sales.
  • Transaction pattern: Estimate monthly transaction count, average order value, refund rate, dispute exposure and the share of domestic, international, card, wallet and bank-based payments.
  • Settlement requirements: Identify the currencies in which you need to receive funds and the bank accounts that should receive payouts.
  • Technical capacity: Note whether you can maintain an API integration, need a hosted checkout, use an e-commerce plug-in or require a platform with built-in seller onboarding.

This profile becomes the test case for every provider. Re-run it when your country, product category, sales channels or customer mix changes.

Compare total cost, not the advertised rate

A single percentage cannot describe your payment cost. Adyen describes its pricing as a fixed processing fee plus a fee determined by the payment method. Its published pricing is indicative, and minimum invoices and eligibility can depend on the business model. Square’s documentation notes that international transaction fees may be added for cards issued outside the seller’s home country in covered markets. Treat both statements as reasons to model your own mix, not as a promise of a particular rate.

Build a transaction-level cost model

  1. Group transactions by method. Create rows for domestic cards, international cards, digital wallets, bank-based methods and any locally important method you plan to offer.
  2. Enter the expected count and average ticket. Use separate rows for high-value and low-value orders when their mix is materially different; fixed fees have a larger effect on small tickets.
  3. Apply the provider’s current method-specific charges. Include the fixed processing component and the payment-method component where the provider uses that structure. Link each figure to the provider’s country-specific pricing page or written quote.
  4. Add cross-border and currency costs. Model cards issued abroad, currency conversion and any payout conversion rather than assuming that the customer’s displayed currency is your settlement currency.
  5. Include refunds and disputes. Record whether a provider returns, retains or separately charges any processing amount when a payment is refunded, and budget for dispute-related fees where applicable.
  6. Calculate a blended result. Divide total modeled charges by total processed volume. Compare that blended cost with your current provider and with a second scenario in which your payment mix changes.

Do not copy a live rate into a permanent forecast without dating it. Commercial terms can change, and the Adyen pricing page specifically presents rates and examples that must be checked for the relevant country and payment method.

Adyen describes Interchange++ as “a pricing model which accurately tracks Interchange rates and scheme fees right down to a transaction level.” That is an official vendor description, not an independent performance assessment. Ask each shortlisted provider how its pricing is calculated and which costs appear on the settlement report.

Confirm that both your business and your buyers are supported

Merchant availability and customer payment coverage are separate checks. Start with the provider’s onboarding-country list, then test every market in which you expect to sell.

Merchant eligibility

Adyen’s platform documentation lists onboarding countries and acquiring regions; review those lists for the legal entity you intend to use at Adyen Platforms. Square says card acceptance through its app is currently available only in specified countries and that the seller must be in the country where the Square account was activated. Its country and card rules are documented in Square’s accepted-cards guidance. A global marketing page is not proof that your exact product, account type or country is eligible.

Ask the provider, in writing, about restricted industries, identity checks, beneficial-owner documentation, required local bank accounts and whether a change of legal entity or country requires a new account.

Buyer-country coverage

List the cards, wallets and locally preferred payment methods your customers use in each market. Confirm that the provider can present those methods in your checkout, settle them to your account and support refunds in the required currency. A provider may accept an international card while not offering the wallet or bank method that drives conversion in a particular country.

For Stripe, use the country availability documentation to check which features are available in the country of your account. Verify the specific product—payments, payouts, subscriptions or marketplace functions—rather than assuming all features share the same availability.

Map payment methods to the checkout customers will see

Make a country-by-country matrix with four columns: customer country, currency shown, payment methods offered and refund method. Include cards, wallets, bank redirects, account-to-account payments and any method required by your industry. Then test the complete path on a real device or a provider sandbox.

  • Cards: Check supported card brands, debit and credit handling, saved-card or token requirements and whether card-present acceptance is a separate product.
  • Wallets and local methods: Confirm activation requirements, redirect behavior, recurring-payment support and the method’s refund and dispute process.
  • Currency display: Decide whether prices are localized, whether the customer chooses a currency and which currency appears on receipts.
  • Failure handling: Test declines, authentication requests, cancelled redirects, duplicate submissions and delayed asynchronous confirmations.

Never promise a payment method solely because a provider lists it in a general catalog. Availability can depend on your country, contract, integration and customer location.

Choose the checkout and integration model you can maintain

Payment selection is also a software and compliance decision. Compare hosted checkout, embedded fields, mobile SDKs, APIs, plug-ins, webhooks, test environments, documentation quality and the engineering effort needed to keep them current.

Hosted or provider-managed checkout

A hosted page can reduce the amount of card data your systems handle and may simplify updates for new payment methods. Check how much control you retain over branding, localization, redirects, webhooks, customer accounts and recovery after a failed payment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Client-side or embedded collection

Adyen documents PCI-compliant client-side methods for collecting and encrypting card information. Its card documentation also says PCI DSS documentation can be required depending on the integration. Read the exact integration’s compliance requirements before choosing embedded fields; the word “hosted” alone does not define your obligations.

Direct API and platform integration

An API gives control over order creation, payment state, partial captures, refunds and reconciliation, but your team must handle idempotency, secure key storage, webhook verification, retries and version changes. Define the payment state machine before coding: authorized, captured, failed, cancelled, refunded and disputed should each map to an order state that accounting can understand.

For every integration, document who owns the following tasks:

  • Collecting and protecting payment details.
  • Requesting customer authentication when required.
  • Listening for asynchronous success or failure notifications.
  • Issuing full and partial refunds.
  • Reconciling provider transactions with orders and bank deposits.
  • Responding to disputes and retaining evidence.

Assess platform functions for your operating model

A simple online shop and a marketplace have different requirements. Adyen for Platforms documents seller onboarding and verification, payment processing, split payments, managed or custom payouts, risk management and reconciliation. Those capabilities matter when your business collects money for multiple sellers; they may add unnecessary complexity to a single-merchant store.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Subscriptions

Confirm recurring-payment support, retry rules, mandate or authorization requirements, prorations, plan changes, cancellations and how failed renewals appear in reports. Test a renewal failure and a refund, not just the initial checkout.

Marketplaces and split payments

Determine whether the provider can verify sellers, allocate a payment among parties, retain funds where legally permitted, calculate your commission and pay sellers on your schedule. Ask who is responsible for refunds, disputes, negative balances and tax or regulatory reporting.

Reporting and reconciliation

Request sample settlement and transaction reports. Check whether each order can be matched to authorization, capture, refund, fee, dispute and payout records. Confirm export formats, API access, time zones, payout identifiers and the treatment of partial refunds. A low processing rate is not useful if your finance team must reconcile transactions manually.

Square Reader for magstripe (with Lightning connector)
  • Pay one transparent rate per swipe for Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express.
  • Works in conjunction with most downloadable Square point-of-sale apps on your device. Customers can pay, tip and sign directly on your device. Track payments in cash, gift cards and more. Also lets you send receipts via e-mail or text message, makes it easy to apply discounts, keeps a data and sales history log and more.
  • Accepts magstripe credit card payments, including those from Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express (fees apply).
  • App sends deposits to your bank account within 1 to 2 business days, or enjoy instant deposits (fees apply).

Check payout timing, currencies and bank-account behavior

Settlement is different from a successful customer payment. Ask when funds become available, when a payout is initiated, which events delay it and whether weekends or holidays change the schedule. Confirm minimum payout amounts, reserve policies and what happens when refunds or disputes exceed the available balance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Currency handling deserves its own test. Adyen’s pricing FAQ asks, “Do you support multi-currency transactions?” and says Adyen can link multiple bank accounts in multiple currencies to avoid conversion. That is provider-specific documentation; do not assume another provider settles in the same way. For each provider, record:

  • Customer-presentment currencies.
  • Processing and settlement currencies.
  • Available bank-account currencies.
  • Conversion point and exchange-rate source.
  • Fees for conversion or cross-border payout.
  • Currency used for refunds and chargebacks.

Run a sample from checkout to bank statement. Verify that the amount, currency, fee and payout reference remain traceable at every stage.

Evaluate authentication, fraud controls and compliance responsibilities

Security features should be assessed as controls and responsibilities, not as a reason to declare one provider categorically safer. Review available risk rules, velocity limits, device or behavioral signals, manual review, blocklists, dispute workflows and reporting. Determine which controls are included, which require configuration and which generate additional charges.

Adyen provides a 3D Secure integration path and documents PCI-related requirements for its card integrations at Adyen’s card documentation. Use that documentation to identify the data flow and evidence your implementation must maintain. Ask any provider:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • When is 3D Secure or another authentication step triggered?
  • Who handles exemptions and what happens when authentication fails?
  • Which card data, if any, touches your systems?
  • What logs and evidence are available for a dispute?
  • How are suspected fraud, account takeover and friendly-fraud cases escalated?

Have legal and security teams confirm obligations for your countries and business model. A provider’s tooling does not transfer every compliance duty away from the merchant.

Decide whether you need in-person hardware

Online-only sellers do not need a card reader. A business that also sells at events, stores or service locations may need card-present acceptance and a way to connect those payments to its online order and inventory systems.

Square identifies Square Readers and Square Terminal as hardware for in-person payments and documents APIs and SDKs for connecting devices to custom applications at Square’s API pricing documentation. Confirm the country, device model, connectivity, receipt options, offline behavior, replacement process and compatibility with your account before purchasing. Hardware availability and pricing can change; do not treat a reader as a prerequisite for online checkout.

Use a weighted scorecard instead of a popularity contest

Score each candidate against the facts that matter to your business. Weight cost and eligibility heavily when margins or geography are decisive; weight integration and reconciliation more heavily when you operate a complex platform.

Total cost What is the blended cost for domestic, international, wallet and other methods, including refunds and disputes? Dated country- and method-specific pricing or a written quote
Eligibility Can this legal entity open the required account and receive payouts? Onboarding-country list and eligibility confirmation
Buyer coverage Are the cards, wallets and local methods needed in each target market available? Method availability by country and currency
Integration Can your team maintain the checkout, APIs, SDKs, webhooks and updates? Technical architecture, sandbox results and compliance scope
Business model Are subscriptions, seller onboarding, split payments or custom payouts required? Feature documentation and contract terms
Settlement When and in which currencies will funds reach the right bank account? Settlement schedule, currency rules and sample reports

A practical comparison process

  1. Gather 90 days of payment data. Break volume and count down by country, currency, method, ticket size, refunds and disputes.
  2. Define must-have markets and methods. Include the countries where the business is registered and where customers pay.
  3. Shortlist providers with documented eligibility. Check Adyen’s platform documentation, Square’s card-acceptance rules and Stripe’s country availability information for the relevant account country and product.
  4. Request exact commercial terms. Ask for method-level fees, international charges, currency conversion, minimums, reserves, refunds and disputes.
  5. Prototype the checkout. Test successful payments, declines, authentication, redirects, duplicate requests, webhooks, partial refunds and asynchronous confirmation.
  6. Reconcile a complete test cycle. Match an order to the provider record, fee, refund, settlement report and bank deposit.
  7. Review security and compliance. Map card-data handling, PCI evidence, authentication, fraud rules, access controls and dispute responsibilities.
  8. Run sensitivity scenarios. Recalculate cost if international volume doubles, average ticket falls, a wallet becomes dominant or refund rates rise.
  9. Confirm contract and exit terms. Check reserves, payout holds, data export, account closure, migration support and notice periods.
  10. Recheck before launch and periodically afterward. Pricing, features, eligibility, hardware and partner terms can change; verify them against current provider documentation.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Choosing the lowest headline rate: Replace it with a blended model that includes method, cross-border, currency, refund and dispute costs.
  • Confusing buyer reach with merchant eligibility: Verify the country of the legal entity and the country in which the account will be activated.
  • Assuming cards cover every market: Map local wallets and bank methods before committing to a checkout.
  • Ignoring reconciliation: Require sample reports and prove that every payout can be matched to orders and fees.
  • Treating a hosted page as full compliance outsourcing: Read the integration-specific PCI and authentication requirements.
  • Buying hardware for an online-only operation: Purchase readers or terminals only when card-present sales justify them and compatibility is confirmed.
  • Testing only the happy path: Exercise declines, 3D Secure, duplicate submissions, delayed webhooks, refunds and disputes in the sandbox.
  • Making a permanent decision from volatile terms: Date your assumptions and schedule a review whenever your markets or payment mix change.

What a defensible final choice looks like

A sound decision record names the legal entity and target markets, shows the modeled payment mix, lists supported methods and currencies, documents integration and compliance work, and explains payout and reconciliation behavior. It also records which assumptions would trigger a re-evaluation. Because provider documentation shows meaningful geographic and use-case differences, the defensible conclusion is usually conditional: choose the platform that passes your non-negotiable eligibility, payment-method and settlement tests at an acceptable total cost, then validate the result against current terms before signing.

Frequently asked questions

Should a small online shop use a platform designed for marketplaces?

Only if it needs seller onboarding, split payments or managed payouts. Adyen’s platform documentation describes those functions for platform businesses; a single-merchant shop may be better served by a simpler checkout and reporting model.

How often should payment-platform assumptions be reviewed?

Review them whenever you enter a new country, add a payment method, change currencies, introduce subscriptions or begin in-person sales. Recheck pricing, eligibility, features and hardware compatibility before launch because those terms can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should be tested before switching providers?

Test successful and failed payments, authentication, redirects, duplicate requests, webhook delays, partial and full refunds, disputes, settlement reports and a bank reconciliation. Include the devices and currencies your customers actually use.

Is multi-currency checkout the same as multi-currency settlement?

No. A provider may let customers pay in several currencies while converting before payout. Confirm presentment, processing, settlement, bank-account and refund currencies separately. Adyen’s pricing FAQ describes linking multiple currency bank accounts, but that behavior is provider-specific.
