There is no universal winner. The best choice depends on the exact itinerary, operating aircraft, seat map, lounge eligibility and fare rules—not the cabin name shown in a search result. Compare the three products flight by flight, then verify the ticket’s conditions before paying.
Delta publishes current details for Delta One, and American publishes current descriptions of Flagship Business. The readily available United Polaris material cited here is from 2016, so it cannot establish United’s current seat layouts, lounge rules or fare restrictions. Treat any Polaris decision as itinerary-specific and confirm the live terms during booking.
What the three cabin names actually mean
“Business class” is not a single, standardized product. Airlines use different labels for different aircraft, routes and fare families. A ticket can carry a premium-sounding name while offering a different seat, lounge or refund policy from another flight operated by the same airline.

Delta markets Delta One on long-haul international routes and selected long-haul domestic services. Its current product page describes 180-degree lie-flat seats, chef-curated dining, Missoni bedding, amenity kits and priority service. Privacy is aircraft-dependent: Delta says full-height suite doors and center privacy dividers are available on most Airbus A350 and A330-900 flights, while configurations vary by aircraft. The aircraft statement is not a guarantee for every flight sold as Delta One, so inspect the seat map for your specific departure.

Delta also sells several fare experiences under the Delta One product information: Basic Business, Classic and Extra. Their change, cancellation, seat-assignment, mileage-earning, check-in and lounge terms are not interchangeable. The page identifies a future policy change for travel on or after January 19, 2027: Basic Business will no longer include Delta One check-in or Delta One Lounge access, while Classic and Extra retain those benefits as listed. Recheck the displayed rules for your travel date.
United Polaris
Polaris is United’s premium international business-class label. The official United announcement available for reference is dated June 2, 2016 and introduced planned bedding, amenity kits and Polaris Lounge service. That announcement is useful historical context, but it is too old to prove current seat layouts, lounge eligibility, fare restrictions or onboard amenities. A current Polaris comparison therefore has to rely on the exact flight display, seat map and United’s current rules at purchase time.
American Flagship Business
American describes Flagship Business as a lie-flat product on specified international routes and selected mainland-to-Hawaii flights. Its listed aircraft include the Boeing 777-200, 777-300, 787-8, 787-9 and Airbus A321T. American’s separate Business product covers shorter international service and some South American flights; American notes that some of those aircraft do not have lie-flat seats. Do not assume that every American ticket labelled Business is Flagship Business.

Compare route eligibility before comparing comfort
The first question is whether the itinerary actually qualifies for the product you want.

- Identify the marketed service. Confirm that the flight is sold as Delta One, United Polaris or American Flagship Business rather than a generic business cabin.
- Check every segment. A connecting itinerary can include different cabins, aircraft or operating carriers. A short feeder flight may not provide a lie-flat seat or the same ground benefits as the long-haul segment.
- Read the route qualification. American’s Flagship Business page limits the product to specified international routes and selected mainland-to-Hawaii services. Delta One is also limited to long-haul international and selected long-haul domestic routes. Polaris eligibility depends on United’s current route and ticket rules.
- Look for a product change after purchase. Airlines can substitute aircraft or change a schedule. Save the original seat map and recheck your reservation if the aircraft changes.
Route labels can be especially misleading on codeshares. The airline selling the ticket may not be the airline operating the aircraft, and the operating carrier’s seat map and lounge rules can control what you receive. Record the operating carrier for each segment before comparing prices.
Aircraft and seat maps determine privacy
Cabin names tell you less than the aircraft type and layout. Use the seat map shown for the exact flight, not a generic fleet diagram.

| Product | Aircraft information published for the product | What the seat map can confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Delta One | Delta says suite doors and center privacy dividers are on most A350 and A330-900 flights; configurations vary by aircraft. | Whether your flight has a suite, a center divider, direct aisle access and the particular row pattern. |
| United Polaris | Current aircraft and layout details are not established by the cited official material. The available United announcement is from 2016. | The live seat map is the authority for your reservation; do not infer a current layout from the historical announcement. |
| American Flagship Business | American lists 777-200, 777-300, 787-8, 787-9 and A321T aircraft. A newly retrofitted 777-300ER announced in October 2026 has 70 Flagship Suite seats. | Whether your flight is the announced retrofit or another configuration, plus door availability, storage and seat position. |
How to read the map
- Check aisle access. A 1-2-1 map usually gives every passenger direct aisle access, but the exact pattern matters. A 2-2-2 map can require climbing over a seatmate.
- Check paired center seats. Some layouts place two seats together with a divider; others provide doors or a fixed partition. Choose a window or center position according to whether you want conversation or isolation.
- Check the seat pitch around galleys and lavatories. A lie-flat seat can still be noisy or exposed if it is adjacent to a galley, lavatory or crew rest area.
- Check the aircraft code after a schedule change. A replacement aircraft may have a different number of rows or a different privacy design.
Delta’s description of suites applies to “most” A350 and A330-900 flights, not all of them. American’s 777-300ER announcement applies to a specific retrofit. Those qualifications are why a seat map is more reliable than a product name.
Lounge and airport benefits
Delta One Lounges
Delta lists Delta One Lounges at John F. Kennedy International Airport, Los Angeles, Boston and Seattle. Its lounge policy describes access for same-day Delta One ticket holders. A Delta Sky Club membership or qualifying card credential alone does not provide entry to a Delta One Lounge. Check whether your ticket is issued and marketed as Delta One and whether the lounge is at your departure airport.
Delta’s fare information also matters. For travel on or after January 19, 2027, Basic Business loses Delta One check-in and Delta One Lounge access under the policy described on Delta’s product page. Classic and Extra retain those benefits as listed there. The effective date is tied to travel, not simply the date you buy the ticket.

American Flagship Lounges
American says Flagship Lounge access depends on qualifying ticketed service and same-day itinerary conditions. A Flagship Business label on one segment does not automatically establish access at every airport on a multi-segment trip. Review the current Flagship Lounge rules for your routing and ticket.

United Polaris lounge eligibility
The current United lounge rules are not established by the 2016 launch announcement. Do not assume that a Polaris-branded ticket, a connection or a status benefit guarantees entry. Confirm the lounge shown for your itinerary in United’s current booking and airport information, including whether access is limited to the departure airport or a qualifying same-day international segment.
Ground-service questions to ask
- Is priority check-in included in the exact fare family?
- Does the lounge admit this ticket, at this airport, on this date?
- Does a connection on another airline change the access rule?
- Are you relying on a credit card or membership that the lounge explicitly excludes?
Fare rules can outweigh a nicer seat
Compare the conditions attached to the fare, not just the cabin price. A cheaper premium fare can be poor value if it removes the flexibility or airport benefits you need.

Before payment, expand the fare conditions and save the page or confirmation email. Look specifically for refundability, change fees or fare differences, seat selection, upgrade restrictions, mileage credit and lounge access. A cabin seat does not by itself establish any of those benefits.
Onboard service: what is documented
| Product | Published onboard features | How to interpret the claim |
|---|---|---|
| Delta One | 180-degree lie-flat seats, chef-curated dining, Missoni bedding, amenity kits and priority service. | These are Delta’s product descriptions; the seat and service vary by aircraft and route. |
| United Polaris | The June 2, 2016 launch announcement describes planned bedding, amenity kits and Polaris Lounge service. | Historical context only; it does not verify the current Polaris seat, meal, bedding or lounge program. |
| American Flagship Business | Fully lie-flat seats, multi-course dining and complimentary entertainment; the announced 777-300ER retrofit adds suite doors, storage and a chaise-lounge position. | Features depend on the aircraft and whether the announced retrofit operates your flight. |
None of these descriptions is an independent comfort test. Use them to identify what to verify: seat angle, privacy, storage, bedding, meal timing and entertainment on the exact aircraft.

A repeatable comparison process
- Search identical dates and city pairs. Comparing different departure times or connection patterns can hide a product difference behind a price difference.
- Write down the product shown for every segment. Use the exact labels, including whether a segment is generic Business rather than Flagship Business or Delta One.
- Record the operating carrier and aircraft. Do this before opening reviews or seat maps.
- Open the seat map. Confirm lie-flat availability, aisle access, suite doors or dividers, row location and any blocked seats.
- Check lounge eligibility at the airport you will actually use. Delta One Lounges, American Flagship Lounges and United Polaris facilities have different conditions.
- Expand fare conditions. Compare cancellation, changes, seat selection, mileage earning, check-in and lounge wording.
- Price the whole itinerary. Include positioning flights, overnight connections, baggage needs and the cost of buying flexibility separately.
- Recheck shortly before departure. Aircraft assignments, schedules, lounge policies and fare terms can change. If the aircraft changes, inspect the new seat map and decide whether to keep or change the booking.
Which product fits which priority?
Choose Delta One when the specific flight offers the privacy you want
Delta is the clearest choice when your route has a Delta One suite configuration you prefer and the fare includes the airport benefits you need. Confirm the aircraft rather than assuming every Delta One flight has a door. If you travel on or after January 19, 2027, avoid Basic Business when Delta One check-in or lounge access is important.
Choose American Flagship Business when the route and aircraft qualify
American is worth prioritizing when your itinerary is one of the specified Flagship routes and the seat map shows a lie-flat configuration you like. The announced retrofitted 777-300ER may be attractive if your flight is specifically scheduled with that aircraft, but the announcement does not make the feature universal across American’s fleet.
Choose United Polaris only after verifying current itinerary terms
Polaris can be a reasonable choice when United’s live booking display provides the schedule, seat and fare flexibility you value. Because the available official product announcement is from 2016, do not use it to infer today’s lounge access, seat design or amenity kit. Make the decision from the current reservation details.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every business seat is lie-flat
American explicitly separates Flagship Business from its regular Business product, and some regular Business flights do not have lie-flat seats. Confirm the aircraft and seat map.
Using a generic fleet article instead of the live map
Airlines can operate multiple layouts within one aircraft family. The map attached to your flight is the useful evidence.

Confusing membership with premium-cabin access
Delta states that Sky Club membership or qualifying card credentials alone do not grant Delta One Lounge entry. Check the ticket-based rule for the lounge you plan to use.
Ignoring the operating carrier
A codeshare can place you on another airline’s aircraft, with different seats and ground benefits. Read the “operated by” line for every segment.
Treating a historical announcement as current policy
The United Polaris announcement dated June 2, 2016 describes the launch concept, not today’s fare or lounge rules. Current eligibility must come from the live booking and current United policy.
Comparing price without comparing flexibility
A lower fare may remove cancellation, changes, seat selection or lounge benefits. Expand the fare conditions before deciding that one ticket is cheaper in practical terms.

Bottom line
Compare the flight, not the label: route qualification, operating carrier, aircraft, seat map, lounge rule and fare conditions determine the real value. Delta and American provide detailed, qualified descriptions of their products; current Polaris details must be confirmed from United’s live itinerary because the available official announcement is historical. Recheck all of those items immediately before booking and again after any aircraft change.
