Short answer: compare a clearly defined Bitcoin exposure with a broad stock benchmark such as the S&P 500 and a defined gold exposure over the same dates, currency and return frequency. Measure each asset’s standalone volatility, its correlation with the stock portfolio, its behavior in the market’s worst months and its contribution to total portfolio risk. In the cited periods, Bitcoin was far more volatile than stocks or gold, while its correlation with stocks moved from near zero to materially positive. A low correlation therefore does not automatically make it a good diversifier, and the available history is not enough to establish Bitcoin or crypto generally as a dependable inflation hedge.
The evidence is also proxy-specific. Most quantitative studies discussed here measure Bitcoin, not every cryptocurrency, and use the U.S. S&P 500 rather than all global equities. Historical results describe particular windows; they are not forecasts or personal allocation advice.
What a fair comparison must control
Crypto, stocks and gold are not single, interchangeable instruments. “Crypto” might mean Bitcoin, a basket of tokens, a fund that tracks futures or a custody account. “Stocks” might mean the S&P 500, a global index or one company. “Gold” might mean spot gold, a physically backed fund, futures or mining shares. Their return series, trading hours, fees, custody arrangements and tax treatment can differ before risk is measured.
A defensible comparison makes these choices explicit:

The comparison below uses figures from Fidelity, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Gold Council, BlackRock Investment Strategy and Vanguard. Each organization used its own dates, benchmarks and methods, so the numbers should not be combined as if they came from one dataset.
Choose the proxies before looking at results
| Exposure | Proxy used in the cited evidence | What that proxy does—and does not—represent |
|---|---|---|
| Crypto | Bitcoin (BTC), sometimes described through a Bitcoin-linked investment | Evidence about Bitcoin cannot be generalized automatically to smaller tokens, stablecoins, decentralized-finance assets or a diversified crypto basket. |
| Stocks | U.S. S&P 500 | A large-cap U.S. equity benchmark, not every U.S. company or the global stock market. |
| Gold | Gold price or a gold-linked exposure, depending on the study | Gold bullion exposure is different from gold-mining shares, futures and leveraged products. |
Fidelity’s portfolio work is explicitly Bitcoin-specific and uses historical data through March 31, 2024 (Fidelity Investments). BlackRock’s more recent page reports correlations through March 31, 2026 and defines its own stock and alternative-asset indexes (BlackRock Investment Strategy). The IMF and World Gold Council use still-different windows. A result is meaningful only with its proxy and dates attached.
Measure standalone volatility first
Standalone volatility describes how widely an asset’s periodic returns move around their average. A common process is to calculate monthly or weekly percentage returns, find their standard deviation and annualize it (for monthly data, multiply by the square root of 12). Use the same frequency and annualization for all assets.

Volatility treats a large gain and a large loss as equally large movements. It is therefore a measure of uncertainty, not a forecast of a loss and not a complete definition of risk. Still, it establishes how much position size an asset can consume in a portfolio.
Bitcoin’s volatility was much higher in the World Gold Council comparison
The World Gold Council reported that, over the two years ending January 25, 2021, Bitcoin was about three times as volatile as the S&P 500 or Nasdaq and more than 4.5 times as volatile as gold. The comparison comes from an organization focused on gold and is tied to that dated sample, but it illustrates the scale difference: equal dollar positions would not have equal variability (World Gold Council).

Do not turn that ratio into a permanent conversion factor. Crypto trading venues, market structure and institutional participation change, and a different window can produce a different estimate. Recalculate volatility for the period relevant to your decision and show the dates beside the result.
Separate upside variability from loss risk
Because volatility counts upside and downside together, add downside measures to your worksheet. Useful additions include the worst monthly return, the fifth-percentile return, maximum drawdown and the median return during months when the S&P 500 fell sharply. These do not replace volatility; they show whether an apparently attractive average is accompanied by losses that an investor may not tolerate.
Use correlation to study co-movement, not to declare a hedge
Correlation ranges from -1 to +1 and summarizes how two return series moved together in a selected window. A value near zero means little linear co-movement in that sample; it does not mean the assets are safe, independent or guaranteed to behave differently in the next crisis.
Why the Bitcoin–stock relationship changed
| Source and period | Bitcoin–S&P 500 correlation | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| IMF, 2017–2019 | 0.01 | Nearly no linear co-movement in this pre-2020 window. |
| IMF, 2020–2021 | 0.36 | A materially more positive relationship, with greater spillovers during volatile episodes. |
| BlackRock Investment Strategy, analysis through March 31, 2026 | 0.53 | A positive relationship in BlackRock’s stated sample and index definitions; not a forecast. |
The IMF documented that crypto and equity prices moved more in sync in 2020–21 and that spillovers increased during episodes of market volatility (International Monetary Fund). That finding is a warning against using an old near-zero coefficient as a permanent diversification assumption.
BlackRock’s analysis through March 31, 2026 reported a 0.53 Bitcoin–stock correlation and a 0.19 gold–stock correlation in its measured period (BlackRock Investment Strategy). The two figures come from the page’s own definitions and window; they are not directly comparable with the IMF coefficients without harmonizing data and methodology. BlackRock also emphasizes that correlation must be considered alongside each asset’s volatility and return profile.

Test rolling and crisis correlations
A single full-period correlation can hide regime changes. Calculate rolling 12-month or 24-month correlations, then calculate correlations only in months when the S&P 500 declined. A relationship that looks independent in calm markets may become positive when investors de-risk together. Conversely, a negative number in a short crisis sample can be statistical noise. Report the number of observations and the dates for every calculation.

Diversification matters most when the core portfolio is under pressure. Sort the S&P 500’s monthly returns from worst to best, choose a rule such as the worst 10% or every month below zero, and compare the median and worst returns for Bitcoin, bonds and gold in exactly those months.
In Fidelity’s January 2018–March 2024 study, bonds and gold had better median returns than Bitcoin in the S&P 500’s worst months. Bitcoin tended to outperform in months when stocks were strong (Fidelity Investments). This pattern explains why a low or changing average correlation is not enough: an asset can diversify average returns yet fail to cushion the drawdowns for which diversification is purchased.
| Down-market question | What the Fidelity evidence indicates | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| What happened in the S&P 500’s worst months? | Bonds and gold had better median returns than Bitcoin in the cited study. | Evaluate each asset as a potential shock absorber, not only by full-period average return. |
| What happened in strong-stock months? | Bitcoin tended to outperform in strong-stock months. | Recognize that return enhancement and crisis protection can be different roles. |
Translate volatility and correlation into portfolio risk
Portfolio risk depends on position weights, each asset’s volatility and the covariances between assets. In simplified two-asset form, variance includes each asset’s weighted variance plus a covariance term. In practice, use a covariance matrix or a spreadsheet function such as a matrix multiplication of weights, covariance matrix and weights. Equal dollar weights do not create equal risk when one asset is several times as volatile as another.
Fidelity’s 60/40 substitution simulation
Fidelity simulated a traditional 60/40 stock-and-bond portfolio using January 2018 through March 2024 data. It then replaced small portions of the stock and/or bond allocation with Bitcoin:

| Bitcoin substitution tested | Share of simulated portfolio volatility attributed to Bitcoin | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| 1% of the stock allocation, or 0.5% of stocks and 0.5% of bonds | About 2.7% | A contribution to simulated portfolio volatility, not a predicted loss or return. |
| 5% of the stock allocation, or 2.5% of stocks and 2.5% of bonds | About 17.8% | The larger Bitcoin position consumed a disproportionately large share of total volatility. |
The result is a practical warning: a small dollar allocation can represent a much larger fraction of risk. Fidelity notes that correlations and portfolio implications can change as markets evolve. Its U.S.-context discussion also states that crypto holdings do not have FDIC or SIPC insurance and may be more susceptible to manipulation than securities.
Vanguard’s risk-budget illustration
Vanguard’s 2026 analysis estimated that a 2% contribution to total risk in its global 60/40 framework could correspond to about 11.5% gold or about 3.5% Bitcoin (Vanguard). These percentages are an illustration of how different standalone volatilities translate into position sizes, not an allocation recommendation.
Vanguard explicitly says the calculation uses standalone volatility and does not account for each asset’s correlation with the core portfolio. It also uses different sample windows from Fidelity. A complete risk-budget exercise must add the covariance terms, specify the investor’s actual holdings and rerun the calculation under multiple windows.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Address the inflation-hedge question separately
Inflation protection is a different test from stock diversification. To test it, compare each asset’s real return (nominal return minus inflation) during identified inflation episodes, not merely its correlation with the S&P 500. Specify the inflation index, country and lag between inflation data and asset returns.

The cited material does not establish a stable, general inflation hedge for Bitcoin or for crypto as a category. Bitcoin’s limited history spans different monetary, regulatory and market regimes, and its high volatility can dominate any relationship with consumer prices. Gold has a longer history, but a claim that it protects purchasing power in every period would still require a defined horizon and inflation measure. Treat inflation-hedge language as a hypothesis to test, not as a property guaranteed by the asset label.

A repeatable comparison workflow
- Write the decision question. Decide whether you are seeking long-term return potential, lower portfolio volatility, protection in stock sell-offs or protection against inflation. One asset may not serve all four roles.
- Lock the proxies. Record Bitcoin, the S&P 500 total-return or price index you will use, and the exact gold exposure. Do not mix a gold-mining equity index with bullion or a Bitcoin futures product with spot Bitcoin without labeling the difference.
- Set dates and frequency. Choose a start and end date, use a common currency and calculate synchronized daily, weekly or monthly returns. Note missing observations and different trading hours.
- Calculate standalone volatility. Report annualized standard deviation and add maximum drawdown and selected downside percentiles. Keep the sample dates beside every number.
- Calculate full-period and rolling correlations. Include Bitcoin–stock, gold–stock and, if relevant, Bitcoin–gold correlations. Add a stress-period correlation for months when stocks fell.
- Analyze down-market behavior. Identify the worst stock months, then report each asset’s median, average and worst return in that subset. State the selection rule before viewing results to avoid cherry-picking.
- Build the covariance matrix. Combine each proposed weight with its volatility and covariance. Run equal-dollar and equal-risk versions so the difference is visible.
- Stress the assumptions. Repeat the calculations with shorter and longer windows, excluding an unusual outlier period and using rolling estimates. A conclusion that survives only one window is fragile.
- Document instrument risks. For crypto, record custody, platform, liquidity, manipulation and insurance considerations. For funds or derivatives, include tracking error, leverage and rollover effects where applicable.
- Separate evidence from a decision. Historical statistics describe what happened in a sample. They do not determine a suitable allocation for a particular person, tax situation, time horizon or loss tolerance.
Common comparison mistakes
- Calling all crypto “Bitcoin.” The strongest cited statistics are Bitcoin-specific; other tokens can have different liquidity, issuance and failure risks.
- Comparing unmatched returns. A spot price, total-return index and fund with fees are not the same series. Use one return convention or explain the mismatch.
- Treating correlation as a guarantee. The IMF’s 0.01 correlation for 2017–19 rose to 0.36 in 2020–21, and BlackRock reported 0.53 through March 31, 2026 in its own analysis.
- Ignoring volatility. A low correlation can be overwhelmed by a very large standalone standard deviation, as the Fidelity and Vanguard risk-contribution illustrations show.
- Using average returns to judge crash protection. Test the months that matter: the stock market’s sharp declines.
- Mixing dates without labeling them. The World Gold Council’s volatility comparison ends January 25, 2021; Fidelity ends March 31, 2024; BlackRock’s cited analysis runs through March 31, 2026; Vanguard’s illustration is from 2026 and uses different sample windows.
- Presenting a risk illustration as advice. Fidelity’s 2.7% and 17.8% figures are shares of simulated volatility, while Vanguard’s 11.5% and 3.5% figures are standalone-volatility examples. Neither is a universal target.
- Assuming a historical inflation relationship will persist. Inflation regimes, interest rates, regulation and investor behavior can all change the result.
What the evidence supports—and what it does not
Can crypto enhance portfolio returns?
Bitcoin outperformed in strong-stock months in Fidelity’s study, so it may have raised returns in some historical portfolios. That observation comes with substantially higher volatility and does not show that future returns will be higher or compensate for the additional risk.
Can crypto improve diversification?
Sometimes, depending on the window and the stress period. The IMF’s near-zero 2017–19 correlation suggests little co-movement then, but the higher 2020–21 relationship and BlackRock’s 0.53 figure through March 31, 2026 show why diversification must be monitored. Downside results and risk contribution are more informative than correlation alone.
Can crypto hedge inflation?
The cited history is insufficient to make that a general claim. Test real returns during defined inflation episodes, and distinguish Bitcoin from other crypto assets. Do not infer an inflation hedge from a low stock correlation or from a period of nominal price appreciation.
Bottom line for a consistent comparison
Start with the proxy and dates, then calculate volatility, correlation, downside behavior and portfolio risk contribution in that order. The available evidence describes Bitcoin as a high-volatility exposure whose relationship with U.S. equities has changed over time. Gold and bonds offered better median results than Bitcoin in the S&P 500’s worst months in Fidelity’s cited sample, while Bitcoin tended to do better when stocks were strong. A small Bitcoin dollar weight can consume a large share of portfolio risk, and a risk-budget example that ignores correlation is only a first approximation. These findings can improve analysis, but they cannot substitute for a personal suitability assessment or a forecast.
