Compare blockchain transactions on three separate axes: the fee basis, the priority mechanism, and the settlement milestone. Bitcoin prices signed transaction bytes against competing demand for block space; Ethereum charges for gas through a protocol-set base fee plus an optional validator tip; Solana charges a per-signature base fee with an optional compute-based priority fee. In all three systems, paying more improves an inclusion incentive or scheduling score, but does not guarantee a fixed completion time.

A useful comparison therefore records the same transaction type, the chain and network, the fee in that chain’s native unit, the observation time, and whether the measured event is broadcast, block inclusion, confirmation, or finality. Treating a low-cost transfer, a contract swap, and a finalized transaction as interchangeable produces misleading conclusions.

Start with the three measurements that are often confused

Before comparing networks, define what each number means. A wallet may display one number while an exchange, explorer, or application reports another stage of the same transaction.

Fee

The fee is what the protocol collects for processing the transaction. Its calculation depends on the chain and the transaction’s resources. Bitcoin primarily prices the signed transaction’s byte size. Ethereum prices computational work in gas. Solana combines a base charge for signatures with optional compute-unit prioritization.

Priority

Priority is the incentive or scheduling weight that can make a transaction more attractive to block producers or validators. A higher fee rate, tip, or compute-unit price can improve the odds of earlier selection. It is not a reservation for a block slot and cannot override an invalid transaction, an expired transaction, unavailable application liquidity, or a congested route.

Inclusion, confirmation, and finality

Inclusion means the transaction appears in a block or ledger entry. Confirmation usually means the network has observed additional progress after inclusion. Finality is the protocol’s stronger assurance that the state will not be reverted under the protocol’s normal assumptions. These milestones have different meanings and should never be compared as though they were one stopwatch reading.

How each chain calculates fees

Bitcoin: signed bytes and fee-per-byte competition

Bitcoin fees are a price for scarce block space. The Bitcoin developer guide describes the fee as depending on the total byte size of the signed transaction and current demand for space in mined blocks. A transaction with more inputs or outputs generally occupies more bytes than a simple transaction, so two payments of the same bitcoin amount can have different fees.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Miners select transactions according to the fee revenue they can obtain from the available block space. In practice, transactions are compared by fee per byte (often displayed by wallets as satoshis per virtual byte), after any higher-priority handling a miner may apply. A wallet estimate is therefore a market estimate, not a promise that the transaction will be in the next block.

  • What changes the fee: signed size, number and type of inputs, number of outputs, and demand for block space.
  • What a higher rate buys: a stronger position in miners’ fee-per-byte ordering.
  • What it does not buy: a guaranteed block, a guaranteed number of minutes, or protection from an invalid or conflicting transaction.

Do not compare a bitcoin-per-byte quote directly with a gwei or lamport quote. Record the native rate first, then convert to a common currency only with a timestamp and the same transaction description.

Ethereum: gas, base fee, and priority tip

Ethereum charges for computational work in gas. A simple native-asset transfer uses a protocol-defined gas amount, while a token transfer, swap, bridge, or other smart-contract call can consume substantially more gas because it executes more operations and touches more state.

Ethereum’s fee has two principal parts. The base fee is set by the protocol in response to block demand and is burned. The priority fee (tip) is offered to validators as an incentive to include the transaction. The total paid is based on gas consumed and the applicable per-unit prices, subject to the transaction’s fee limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ethereum’s gas documentation gives a worked example rather than a market forecast: 21,000 gas units at a 10 gwei base fee plus a 2 gwei tip equals 252,000 gwei, or 0.000252 ETH. That figure is an illustration of the arithmetic, not a current fee estimate.

  • Simple transfer: lower and more predictable gas use than a multi-step contract interaction.
  • Contract call: gas use varies with the operation and state touched; a quoted tip alone cannot describe the total cost.
  • Priority effect: increasing the tip can improve inclusion prospects when validators have competing transactions.

A transaction can remain pending if its offered priority is unattractive for current demand. Conversely, a high tip cannot make an operation succeed if the contract reverts, the account lacks funds, or the transaction’s nonce conflicts with another pending transaction.

Solana: per-signature base fee and compute prioritization

Solana applies a base fee per signature. A transaction that requires multiple signatures can therefore cost more than one requiring only one, even before any priority setting is added.

Solana also supports an optional prioritization fee through compute-budget instructions. The transaction specifies a compute-unit price and a compute-unit limit; the resulting compute-based charge increases scheduling priority. The limit describes the resources the transaction may consume, while the price expresses how much the sender is willing to pay per compute unit. These settings should match the application’s actual workload rather than being copied blindly between unrelated transactions.

Solana’s production-readiness documentation gives an illustrative range of about $0.001–$0.005 for a simple USDC transfer in normal conditions and about $0.01–$0.05 during congestion, with peaks potentially higher. The page does not establish a publication year for that range, so treat it as a general example, not a live quote or a cross-chain ranking.

  • Optional priority component: based on compute-unit settings and used by the scheduler.
  • Operational concern: applications still need to track confirmation and handle expiry or congestion; a priority setting is not a settlement guarantee.

Comparison table: put unlike units into separate columns

Axis Bitcoin Ethereum Solana
Fee basis Signed transaction byte size multiplied by a fee rate, with block-space demand determining competitive rates. Gas consumed, priced through a protocol-set base fee plus a priority tip. Base fee per signature plus an optional compute-based prioritization fee.
Priority control Fee-per-byte competition in miner selection. Priority tip encourages validator inclusion. Compute-unit price in compute-budget instructions affects scheduler priority.
What “faster” should mean Earlier block inclusion, subject to miner selection and congestion. Time to inclusion, followed by justified and finalized milestones. Scheduling and processing followed by confirmation tracking.
Typical transaction variable Inputs, outputs, and signed size. Contract complexity and gas consumed. Signature count, compute-unit limit, and compute-unit price.
Failure caveat A wallet estimate does not guarantee a block slot. An offered fee can be too low for timely inclusion; a contract can also fail after consuming gas. The transaction fee remains payable when execution fails.

Why priority improves odds instead of guaranteeing speed

Each network has a scarce processing resource: Bitcoin block bytes, Ethereum block gas, and Solana execution and scheduling capacity. A fee or tip tells the block producer or scheduler how much value the sender places on that resource. When demand exceeds available capacity, higher-paying transactions are generally more attractive.

Several conditions can defeat a simple “pay more, finish faster” assumption:

  • Validity: an invalid signature, incorrect nonce, insufficient balance, or failed program/contract check prevents successful settlement regardless of the fee.
  • Congestion: a fee that was competitive when broadcast can become ordinary when demand rises.
  • Expiry: some transaction formats or recent-block references become unusable after a validity window.
  • Application conditions: a swap may wait for slippage limits, a bridge may await a separate process, and an exchange may delay crediting after on-chain inclusion.
  • Infrastructure: wallet and RPC nodes can delay broadcast, reject an underpriced replacement, or report a stale status.

Use priority as a probability control. A sound statement is “this setting raises the chance of earlier inclusion under current conditions,” not “this setting confirms instantly.”

Measure the right settlement milestone

Broadcast or pending

Broadcast is the point at which a wallet or RPC submits the transaction to a node. Pending means the transaction is known to a node or pending pool but is not yet included. Neither state proves that the chain has accepted the transaction into its canonical history.

Block or ledger inclusion

Inclusion is the first on-chain appearance. For Bitcoin, this is a mined block. For Ethereum, it is inclusion in a block. For Solana, it is processing in the ledger. Inclusion is often the fastest milestone to observe, but it may not be the milestone a merchant or bridge requires.

Confirmation

Confirmation measures additional network progress after inclusion. The exact rule varies by application. A wallet may show one confirmation, an exchange may require several blocks, and Solana production guidance emphasizes actively tracking confirmation rather than assuming that submission equals completion.

Ethereum justified and finalized states

Ethereum’s transaction lifecycle documentation distinguishes pending-pool broadcast and block inclusion from later justified and finalized states. A report that says “Ethereum takes 12 seconds” is incomplete unless it says which of those stages was timed and under what network conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Finality and business acceptance

Finality is a protocol-level property; an exchange’s credit policy is an application-level rule. A transfer can be final on-chain while a service still waits for internal risk checks. Conversely, a service may display a deposit after inclusion while accepting a residual reorganization risk. Always name the milestone and the accepting party.

A repeatable method for an apples-to-apples comparison

  1. Define the transaction. Specify native-asset transfer, token transfer, swap, contract call, bridge operation, or another action. Include input and output counts for Bitcoin, the contract function for Ethereum, and expected signatures and compute behavior for Solana.
  2. Choose the network and date. Record mainnet or testnet, the observation date and time in UTC, and the wallet or RPC used. Fee markets change quickly, so an undated number is not a durable benchmark.
  3. Capture the native fee quote. Record bitcoin per byte (or the wallet’s equivalent), Ethereum gas limit and base/priority prices in gwei, or Solana signature and compute-budget settings. Keep the original units before any currency conversion.
  4. Record the transaction identifier. Save the transaction ID or signature, the submitted settings, and whether the wallet changed them during a replacement attempt.
  5. Time separate milestones. Measure broadcast-to-inclusion, inclusion-to-confirmation, and, where applicable, inclusion-to-finality as separate intervals.
  6. Repeat enough times to describe variability. Report the sample size and whether the result is a median, range, or single observation. A single fast transaction is not a network-wide typical time.
  7. Convert to fiat only at the end. Use the same price timestamp and currency for all chains, and state whether the value is a one-time observed cost or a recurring estimate.

Worked comparison examples

Bitcoin payment with changing transaction size

Suppose two payments use the same fee rate. The transaction with more inputs and outputs occupies more signed bytes, so its total bitcoin fee is higher even though its fee rate is identical. If the mempool becomes crowded, both transactions may wait, while a replacement paying a higher fee per byte may move ahead. The meaningful comparison is the fee rate, total byte size, and time to the chosen confirmation threshold.

Ethereum transfer versus contract swap

A 21,000-gas native transfer can be used to demonstrate arithmetic, but it cannot stand in for a decentralized-exchange swap. A swap may consume a different amount of gas and may fail its application conditions even after a validator includes it. Compare the gas actually consumed, base fee, priority tip, and inclusion-to-finality interval for each transaction type.

Solana transfer with a priority setting

A simple one-signature transfer has the base signature fee. An application that adds compute-budget instructions can pay an extra prioritization charge to improve scheduling during congestion. If the program fails, Solana documentation states that the transaction fee is still charged. Therefore, a cost comparison must include both successful and failed-attempt outcomes when failure is plausible.

How to use fee estimators and explorers without overstating precision

  • the estimator’s network and timestamp;
  • the transaction type it assumes;
  • whether the number is a fee rate, a total fee, a tip, or a maximum;
  • the inclusion or finality target behind labels such as fast, normal, or slow;
  • whether replacement transactions can be broadcast if the first setting becomes uncompetitive;
  • the wallet’s treatment of unused gas limits, compute limits, and failed execution.

After submission, use an explorer or RPC response to verify the actual fee, block or slot, and status. Do not infer finality from a green “submitted” message. If an estimator offers no transaction type, timestamp, or milestone definition, present its output as an unqualified suggestion rather than a benchmark.

Common comparison mistakes and their fixes

Comparing token amounts instead of resource prices

One chain’s native token amount is not comparable with another’s. First compare the resource being purchased—bytes, gas, signatures, or compute units—then apply a common fiat price at a stated time.

Calling every on-chain event a confirmation

Replace vague wording with a milestone label: broadcast, pending, included, confirmed after a specified number of blocks or slots, justified, or finalized.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using a simple transfer to represent every transaction

Separate native transfers, token transfers, swaps, bridges, and other contract or program calls. Their resource use and failure modes differ.

Treating a priority fee as a guaranteed deadline

Describe priority as an incentive or scheduling weight. Keep validity, congestion, expiry, and application-level delays in the timing discussion.

Ignoring failed transactions

Check each protocol’s fee-on-failure behavior. On Solana, the transaction fee remains payable when execution fails, so a successful-only cost estimate can understate the amount a user risks spending.

Quoting an undated “average”

Fee levels and confirmation times are volatile. Attach the date, UTC time, network, transaction type, sample size, and statistic to every live figure. No synchronized current benchmark for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana is available, so do not present one without fresh matched measurements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decision framework: choose what to optimize

  • If cost is the priority: define the exact transaction and compare native resource requirements and observed fees, not headline token amounts.
  • If earliest inclusion matters: use the current fee market and an appropriate priority setting, then monitor the transaction rather than assuming the estimate is binding.
  • If irreversible settlement matters: select and report a confirmation or finality threshold appropriate to the recipient, not merely first inclusion.
  • If failure is expensive: include simulation or preflight checks where available, verify balances and parameters, and account for fees that may still be charged on failure.
  • If you are publishing a benchmark: run matched transaction types, timestamp every observation, disclose infrastructure, and report variability instead of a single “fastest” number.

Practical checklist before you publish or send a comparison

  • Have you named the chain, network, and transaction type?
  • Are fees shown first in native units with their calculation basis?
  • Have you separated fee, priority, inclusion, confirmation, and finality?
  • Does every timing number state the measured milestone?
  • Are live figures dated and tied to a sample or observation method?
  • Have you explained how contract complexity, signatures, inputs, outputs, or compute units change the result?
  • Have you avoided presenting an illustrative Solana range or Ethereum arithmetic example as a current quote?
  • Have you stated the relevant failure behavior, including Solana’s fee on failed execution?

The Bottom Line

There is no universal cheapest or fastest blockchain transaction. Compare the same operation in its native fee units, describe how priority affects selection or scheduling, and report the exact milestone— inclusion, confirmation, or finality—before drawing a conclusion.
