The best-value beer is not automatically the cheapest can or the largest case. Compare the exact beer, package volume, and amount you will actually pay, then divide total cost by total volume. Choose the lowest comparable unit price only among beers and quantities you genuinely want. A phone calculator is enough; no special app or retailer data is required.

What “best value” should mean

Value is a decision, not one universal number. For the same beer, cost per fluid ounce or litre gives an apples-to-apples comparison. For different beers, unit price measures quantity for money but says nothing about taste, freshness, brewing quality, style, or whether you will enjoy the product.

Use four checks before declaring a winner:

Check Question to answer
Product match Is it the same beer, variant, alcohol strength, and package type? If not, record the difference.
Unit price What is the total price divided by the total liquid volume?
Amount payable What will the register charge after applicable taxes, deposits, loyalty discounts, and purchase conditions?
Personal fit Will you use the whole package, and is the beer acceptable for the occasion?

The lowest figure is useful only when the products are acceptable substitutes. A cheaper case that sits unopened is not good value for your household.

Record the exact product and package

Match the beer before matching the price

Start with the name, style or variant, alcohol strength shown on the package, and whether the container is a can, bottle, or another format. “Lager” or “pale ale” is not a product match by itself. A store-brand beer, a light version, and a premium version may have different prices and volumes even when their labels look similar.

When comparing stores, use the same product identifier and package count wherever possible. If one shop sells a 12-pack and another sells a 24-pack, you are comparing package sizes, not merely shelf prices.

Count every container and read the volume

Write down both the number of containers and the volume of each container. Total volume is:

total volume = number of containers × volume per container

Check the unit printed on the package. Fluid ounces, millilitres, litres, pints, and other measures cannot be compared directly without conversion. Do not infer that two “12-packs” contain the same amount: a 12-pack of 355-millilitre cans and a 12-pack of 473-millilitre cans differ substantially.

Capture the price conditions

Photograph or note the shelf label, including the regular price, sale price, dates, and any wording such as “with card,” “buy two,” or “member price.” Record deposits or container fees separately if your jurisdiction charges them. A displayed price may be before or after tax depending on local practice; only the checkout total tells you what you will pay.

Calculate a comparable unit price

The core formula

unit price = total price ÷ total package volume

Use one unit throughout a comparison. If you use fluid ounces, every option must be expressed in fluid ounces. If you use litres, convert every option to litres. The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) describes unit-price labels as a cost per measure, such as an ounce or litre, and notes that consumers can calculate the figure with simple arithmetic. See NIST SP 1181 (2025 Ed.) and NIST’s consumer unit-pricing guidance.

Worked example

Suppose an illustrative package costs $18 and contains 144 fluid ounces. The calculation is $18 ÷ 144 = $0.125 per fluid ounce. This is arithmetic for demonstrating the method, not a reported local beer price.

To express a fluid-ounce result per litre, multiply by approximately 33.814:

cost per litre = cost per fluid ounce × 33.814

At $0.125 per fluid ounce, the equivalent is about $4.23 per litre. Keep the conversion factor and rounding consistent across every option.

Illustrative package comparison

The following figures are hypothetical examples showing why sticker price can mislead:

Package Total volume Illustrative price Price per fluid ounce
12 × 12 fl oz 144 fl oz $18.00 $0.125
18 × 12 fl oz 216 fl oz $26.00 About $0.120
24 × 16 fl oz 384 fl oz $45.00 About $0.117

The 24-pack has the highest checkout price but the lowest unit price in this illustration. That does not make it the right purchase if you will not use the extra cans or if the promotion requires more units than you need.

Container price versus volume price

Price per can or bottle answers “What does one container cost?” Unit price answers “How much liquid do I receive for my money?” Container price is useful for a single-serving budget; volume price is the fair comparison for different package sizes. Report both when a reader needs to plan the cash outlay and the quantity purchased.

Compare the same beer at different stores

Using the same beer controls for product differences and makes the calculation meaningful. Follow this sequence while standing in the shop or checking a store’s current listing:

  1. Write the exact product name, variant, container size, and pack count.
  2. Calculate the total volume once and reuse it for every store.
  3. Record each store’s ordinary price and any advertised sale price.
  4. Read the promotion terms: loyalty membership, minimum quantity, required combination, or specific payment method.
  5. Add charges that apply at checkout, such as deposits or taxes, and subtract only discounts you actually qualify for.
  6. Divide the resulting payable amount by total volume.
  7. At checkout, compare the scanned price with the shelf label and save the receipt.

If two stores show the same unit price, choose based on travel cost, availability, freshness, return policy, or the smaller package that better fits your plans. Those are practical costs even though they are not part of the liquid-price calculation.

Do not fill an unavailable value with an estimate. Mark it “not stated” until you can verify the label or receipt.

Compare different beers without pretending they are identical

When the products differ, present unit price as one axis rather than the verdict. A useful comparison notes:

  • Style and preference: whether each beer suits the drinker and occasion.
  • Strength: the alcohol percentage printed on each label, especially when a lower-strength and full-strength version are being compared.
  • Package fit: whether the available size creates leftovers or waste.
  • Unit price: cost per common volume unit.
  • Checkout cost: the amount due after all conditions.

Do not convert a lower unit price into a claim that one beer is better quality. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) warns that geographic average-price comparisons can reflect differences in brand, quality, and package size as well as price; that same caution applies to a shelf comparison. Read its explanation at BLS Average Price Data.

Decide how much weight to give each factor

For a party where everyone wants one familiar beer, unit price and total volume may dominate. For a tasting, a preferred style may matter more than a small price difference. For occasional drinking, a smaller package can be better value in practice if the larger one leads to waste. State the trade-off instead of declaring the cheapest liquid universally best.

Handle promotions, taxes, deposits, and loyalty pricing

Promotions

A sale price is comparable only if you can meet its terms. Check whether the discount requires a loyalty card, a minimum number of packages, a mix-and-match purchase, a particular day, or a coupon. Divide the actual discounted total by the volume you take home, not by the headline percentage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Taxes and deposits

Tax and container-deposit treatment varies by jurisdiction. The UK government’s price-marking guidance says displayed selling prices should include taxes under its rules, but that is not a worldwide standard; read the UK Price Marking Order guidance only as a UK example. In another location, tax may be added at the register or a refundable deposit may appear separately. Use the final legal checkout total for your decision and keep refundable deposits identified rather than silently treating them as beer cost.

Large packages and overbuying

Never assume the biggest pack is cheapest per unit. The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) gives a non-beer illustration: a 600-millilitre juice bottle at 95 pence is 15.8 pence per 100 millilitres, a one-litre bottle at £2 is 20 pence per 100 millilitres, and a 1.5-litre bottle at £3.50 is 23.3 pence per 100 millilitres. The larger container costs more per volume in that example. The CMA’s consumer guidance is at Unit pricing: information for consumers.

Know what unit-price labels do—and do not—guarantee

Some retailers print a per-litre or per-ounce figure; others show only a package price. Label availability and format depend on local rules. NIST says U.S. unit-pricing regulations differ by jurisdiction. Its consumer project page, accessed October 13, 2026, reports that 19 states and two territories had implemented unit-pricing laws or regulations, with mandatory provisions in 11 jurisdictions; this is time-sensitive and should be checked against current local law.

Australia illustrates why you must not generalize. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says covered grocery retailers generally display unit prices, commonly per litre for beverages, while alcoholic beverages are exempt from the code’s unit-pricing requirement. See the ACCC Unit Pricing Code.

If your shelf lacks a unit price, calculate it yourself and ask staff to clarify an unclear label. A missing unit figure does not make package prices comparable.

Use government statistics only for broad context

BLS average-price tables can indicate price levels for selected items in a given month, but they are estimates rather than live quotes from your nearby stores. BLS says beer and wine observations in its average-price collection are priced bimonthly. Geographic comparisons can also reflect differences in brands, quality, and sizes. Therefore, those tables cannot prove which local retailer has the lowest price today.

Alcohol-pricing policy can further change what shoppers see. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention describes minimum-pricing policies used in some jurisdictions and distinguishes a minimum price per standard drink from a minimum tied to a specified container size. Its overview at About Minimum Pricing Policies explains the policy concepts; it is not a current store-price list.

A repeatable in-store workflow

  1. Set the comparison goal. Decide whether you are matching one beer across stores or choosing among acceptable substitutes.
  2. Photograph the label. Capture product identity, pack count, container volume, and all promotion text.
  3. Normalize units. Convert every option to litres or fluid ounces before comparing.
  4. Compute volume. Multiply container count by container size; recheck the arithmetic.
  5. Determine payable price. Apply only discounts you qualify for and add applicable taxes, deposits, or fees.
  6. Calculate unit cost. Divide payable price by total volume and round consistently.
  7. Check quantity fit. Reject a nominal bargain if the package exceeds what you can use responsibly or conveniently.
  8. Compare acceptable alternatives. Note differences in style, strength, and quality rather than hiding them in one number.
  9. Verify at the register. If the scanned total differs from the displayed price, ask staff which price and promotion terms apply before completing the purchase.
  10. Save your worksheet. Prices and promotions change; a dated record prevents an old comparison from being mistaken for a current quote.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

Comparing sticker prices

Symptom: a 24-pack looks more expensive than a 12-pack. Fix: calculate total volume and unit price before judging.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mixing measurement systems

Symptom: one option is shown per litre and another per fluid ounce. Fix: convert both to the same unit; approximately 33.814 fluid ounces equal one litre.

Ignoring promotion conditions

Symptom: the shelf advertises a lower price but the register charges more. Fix: check card, quantity, date, and coupon requirements and show the label to staff.

Treating a different beer as an exact substitute

Symptom: the cheapest product wins despite a different style or strength. Fix: mark the products as different and decide whether the substitute is genuinely acceptable.

Assuming a government average is today’s local price

Symptom: a published average conflicts with nearby shelves. Fix: use the average only for broad context; rely on a dated local label and receipt for a purchase decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Forgetting the final total

Symptom: tax or a container deposit changes the apparent bargain. Fix: include applicable checkout charges and distinguish refundable deposits from nonrefundable cost.

A simple decision rule

Choose the option that has the lowest verified cost per common volume unit among products you would actually drink, after applying the promotion terms and checkout charges. If the unit prices are close, prefer the package that matches your consumption, reduces waste, and is easiest to buy. If the products differ materially, show the unit-price difference alongside the style, strength, and quality trade-offs instead of presenting a false single winner.
