For a family that wants one shared data allowance, compare the total cost and eligibility rules for every line—not just the advertised data figure. Telstra offers account-level sharing through eligible bundle add-ons; eligible Optus plans can pool data on one bill; Belong lets customers gift data rather than automatically pooling it. Boost says its services do not share data with one another.
How family data sharing works
“Family plan” can describe different arrangements. With an account-level pool, eligible services draw from a shared allowance. With data gifting, one customer transfers some data to another. A plan that offers neither may still be bought on the same household budget, but it does not meet a strict shared-pool requirement.
- Automatic pool: eligible services on an account use a common allowance.
- Data gifting: customers transfer data between services; this is not necessarily an automatic pool.
- Separate allowances: each line has its own data, with no sharing between services.

What to check before choosing
Calculate the whole household bill
Add the required primary or base plan and every additional SIM. A per-line figure is useful only when you state how many lines it covers and whether it includes a mandatory base service. Do not treat a shared allowance as a fixed allocation for each person.

Confirm that every plan is eligible
Sharing rules can exclude particular plan types, even within the same provider. For Optus, check the Critical Information Summary for each service and confirm the account limit. Telstra’s family arrangement requires an eligible Upfront Essential or Premium base plan before bundle add-ons can be attached.

Understand what happens when the pool runs out
Optus says services opted into Endless Data continue at up to 1.5 Mbps after the shared allowance is exhausted. If Endless Data is not selected, its support page says an extra 1GB for $10 is provided when the pool runs out. Check the applicable terms before relying on either treatment. Telstra says its bundle plans have no excess data charges; check the current plan terms for the applicable service conditions.
Match the allowance to real usage
Look at recent usage by line, not only the household total. A large allowance may be poor value if the family uses little data, while a pool can help when usage varies from month to month or among members. No single allocation suits every household.

Check coverage where each person uses the phone
Review carrier coverage for home, work, school and regular travel locations, and confirm device compatibility for the services you need. Coverage and speeds were not independently tested for this comparison, and availability can vary by location.

Compare who controls the account, how usage alerts work, whether one bill suits the household, and how easily a line can be changed or transferred. Telstra describes one monthly bill and no lock-in contracts for its bundle arrangement. Check current terms for all providers before signing up.

How to choose the right arrangement
- List the lines: count the people and any tablets or mobile broadband services that need a SIM.
- Review usage: use recent bills or account records to estimate each line’s typical data use and identify heavy-use months.
- Check eligibility: confirm the exact plan names, required base service, line cap and sharing mechanism in the provider’s current terms.
- Work out the recurring total: add the ongoing cost of the base plan and all lines. Separate any introductory bonus or discount from the standard price, and check its end date.
- Compare after-pool rules: decide whether the stated speed reduction, extra-data charge or other treatment fits the family’s needs.
- Check coverage and devices: review each member’s usual locations and confirm their phone supports the network features they expect to use.
Provider details to verify
Telstra: base plan plus bundle add-ons
Telstra’s family page says an eligible Upfront Essential or Premium Mobile Plan is required, with up to five Mobile and/or Data Bundle Plans available to share account data automatically. Its page also describes one monthly bill, no lock-in contracts and no excess data charges. The cited page does not state bundle prices, so calculate the actual total using the current plan details before comparing it with another provider. See Telstra’s bundle-plan terms.
Optus: check plan compatibility and pool treatment
Optus says eligible postpaid mobile and mobile broadband services on one bill contribute to a shared allowance. Once a service uses its own allowance, it draws from the rest of the pool. The support page also describes usage alerts and account or app monitoring. Because some plan types do not share with other plans, check each service’s Critical Information Summary rather than assuming that every Optus SIM can join the pool. The offer page surfaced four SIMs, 320GB shared monthly data and AU$165 per month. Dividing that price by four gives AU$41.25 per SIM, but it does not mean each person receives a separate 80GB allocation. The offer should be confirmed in the current checkout flow and Critical Information Summary; a discount shown on the page had an end date of 4 August 2026 and should not be treated as a current promotion. Check the Optus offer.

Belong’s mobile page describes month-to-month SIM-only plans, data banking when customers pay on time, and data sharing with other Belong mobile and data customers. Its sharing description is data gifting, so check how transfers work and whether that suits your household rather than treating the allowance as an automatic pool. Boost Mobile: not a pooled-data option
Boost’s support page says data cannot be shared between one Boost service and another. It therefore does not fit a household whose requirement is a shared data pool. Read Boost’s explanation.
