ASIC Quality is a GPU hardware reading, not an FPS result or a standardized performance score. A percentage shown for one GPU should not be used to rank it against a different model unless the software publisher documents that both readings share a comparable calibration. To compare performance, use the same named benchmark or game workload, with matching versions, resolution, and settings.

This distinction matters because a neat percentage looks easier to compare than a complete test setup. It is tempting to assume that a card showing a higher value must be faster, more efficient, or a better overclocker. The documented evidence does not support those conclusions. Treat ASIC Quality as one tool-specific observation, then use repeatable benchmark or game results to answer performance questions.

What ASIC Quality tells you—and what it does not

ASIC Quality is a value reported for some GPUs by monitoring software. It describes a hardware characteristic as interpreted by that tool; it is not a direct measurement of frame rate, benchmark performance, value for money, or a guaranteed overclocking result.

The percentage can look like a universal rating, but the available documentation does not establish a single calibration that makes readings comparable across GPU vendors, generations, or models. A higher displayed percentage therefore does not, by itself, establish that a card is faster than another card. It also does not tell you how much a card cost, how much power it uses in a particular game, or whether its cooler can sustain a given clock.

Why a percentage can mislead

Percentages invite direct ranking, but that is only sound when the scale has a documented common basis. HWiNFO release notes show that ASIC Quality reporting was added for selected GPU families at different times. Support notes for named families do not define a universal cross-generation or cross-vendor scale.

Think of the field as a reading with a context attached: the exact device, the software that decoded its hardware information, and the calibration used for that device family. Remove that context and the number becomes easy to overinterpret. Two percentages can be numerically different while still lacking a documented relationship that lets you calculate a speed advantage.

The absence of a universal scale also means that a percentage should not be averaged across a collection of cards, used to create a league table of different models, or presented as a quality grade shared by all manufacturers. Without a published common calibration, those operations imply precision the measurement does not provide.

What does NVIDIA GPU SPEEDO mean?

For newer NVIDIA GPUs, secondary reporting describes HWiNFO’s ASIC Quality percentage as being derived from a hardware-defined SPEEDO value, with a range specific to the GPU model. That account also characterizes the reading as reflecting factory voltage and frequency characteristics.

Those points help explain why a percentage may appear for a recent NVIDIA card, but they do not establish a universal NVIDIA rating system. NVIDIA documentation located for this topic does not explain the exact conversion formula or calibration range. Do not state a precise SPEEDO-to-percentage formula, assume that every NVIDIA generation uses the same range, or imply that NVIDIA endorses the displayed percentage as a cross-model score. Describe it as the value reported by the monitoring software and identify the model and software version.

SPEEDO should therefore be treated as an implementation detail behind a tool’s reading, not as a replacement for testing. Even if two cards expose a SPEEDO-derived percentage, you still need a common workload to determine which one performs better under the conditions that matter to you.

Can you compare ASIC Quality between GPUs?

You can record the readings as observations about particular cards, but you should not treat them as a performance comparison across different models. For a fair report, identify the exact GPU model and monitoring-software version, and label the percentage as that tool’s reading. Do not turn the number into a conclusion about gaming speed, overall quality, or overclocking headroom.

Even within one GPU family, do not assume that the scale or interpretation is identical unless the software publisher documents that point. HWiNFO’s release history establishes support for particular families, not a universal conversion rule. If the field is absent, that can reflect device or software support rather than a value of zero.

A comparison can be useful when its question is narrow. For example, you may document that two samples report different values in the same monitoring application, then investigate whether their operating conditions, firmware, and model identifiers differ. That is a record of hardware readings. It is not evidence that one sample will render more frames or deliver a specific overclock.

ASIC Quality versus performance evidence

Question Appropriate evidence What ASIC Quality can contribute
Which GPU is faster in a defined test? The same named benchmark, version, test, and score type At most, a separately recorded hardware reading
Which card runs a game faster? The same game, resolution, visual settings, build, and frame-rate measure Context about the tested sample, not an FPS prediction
Does a card have a guaranteed better overclock? Controlled overclocking tests and stability results No guarantee; the percentage alone is insufficient
Which purchase is better value? Price, measured performance, power, features, and warranty considered together Not a value score

How to compare actual GPU performance

Start with the workload you care about. Benchmark results are meaningful only in the context of the test and its scoring method; game results need the game and its settings. Keep the measurement method consistent rather than substituting an ASIC Quality percentage for performance data.

  1. Choose a relevant workload. For a general synthetic comparison, select a named benchmark and test, such as 3DMark Time Spy Graphics. For a game-focused decision, select the game or games you actually want to play. A workload that reflects the reader’s intended use is more informative than a convenient but unrelated test.
  2. Match the test and version. Compare the same benchmark test and version, not different tests or a graphics sub-score against a combined score. For game testing, use the same game build where possible. If the benchmark version differs, state that limitation instead of presenting the numbers as directly equivalent.
  3. Match the settings. For games, state resolution and visual-quality settings. For benchmarks, identify the test and any settings that affect the run. A result at one resolution or quality preset answers a different question from a result at another.
  4. Use the same performance measure. Compare like with like: for example, the same benchmark score type or the same reported frame-rate measure. Do not mix frame rates with scores or distinct benchmark sub-scores. If one result is an average frame rate, the other should use the same published measure.
  5. Report the conditions. Identify the GPU models and the workload details so a reader can understand what the result does—and does not—show. Include the benchmark or game name, version when known, resolution, visual settings, and score or frame-rate measure.
  6. Keep ASIC Quality separate. If useful, list the reading alongside the performance results as a separate hardware-software observation. Do not use it to explain a performance difference unless evidence independently establishes that relationship.

What a benchmark score represents

UL’s Time Spy documentation defines its Graphics score using frame rates from its graphics tests and a scaling constant. That score belongs to the specific test and calculation; it is not a general-purpose percentage that can be equated with ASIC Quality.

This distinction applies even when two results are both called “scores.” A score is meaningful because the benchmark defines the workload, the measured component, and the calculation that turns measurements into a reported number. If any of those elements change, the comparison may no longer be like for like.

UL’s Fire Strike documentation also distinguishes Graphics, Physics, and Combined scores. Those are different test components, so a comparison should use the same score type for both GPUs. A Graphics score for one card and a Combined score for another would not be an apples-to-apples result. Likewise, do not silently substitute a Physics or Combined result for a Graphics result simply because both appear on the same benchmark screen.

What game estimates can—and cannot—show

UL describes its game-performance estimates as based on correlations between 3DMark results and average frame rates in selected games under specific settings. Those estimates are tied to those measured relationships and conditions; they are not a universal conversion from ASIC Quality to frame rate.

For a game comparison, report the game, resolution, graphics settings, and frame-rate measure. If the estimate comes from a benchmark’s prediction feature rather than direct game testing, identify it as an estimate rather than presenting it as a measured result. A prediction based on a selected set of games may not represent another game, another graphics preset, or another resolution.

Direct testing and predicted results should not be blended without explanation. A directly measured result tells readers what happened in the stated run. A benchmark estimate tells readers what the benchmark’s correlation model projects under its defined conditions. Neither is an ASIC Quality score.

How to report an ASIC Quality reading responsibly

A useful report keeps the reading reproducible and prevents readers from mistaking it for a benchmark. Include the GPU model and monitoring-software version, then state plainly that the percentage is the tool’s reading. If you also report performance, place that in a separate result with its own workload and settings.

  • Identify the device: name the GPU model, not just the vendor or product family. A board partner’s product name may not be enough if several GPU models share a similar retail label.
  • Identify the tool: name HWiNFO and its version when that is the source of the reading. Support and interpretation can change between releases.
  • Separate the measures: label ASIC Quality and performance results independently. Put the percentage in a hardware-reading column or paragraph rather than in a benchmark ranking.
  • Name the test conditions: include benchmark test/version or game, resolution, and visual settings as relevant. Identify the score type or frame-rate measure as well.
  • Avoid unsupported inferences: do not say the percentage predicts higher FPS, better value, lower power, or a guaranteed overclock.
  • Preserve the limitation: if the calibration relationship is undocumented, say so. A transparent limitation is more useful than a confident but unsupported conversion.

If a report compares several cards, repeat the same format for every sample. Inconsistent labels can create a false impression that one card was measured more precisely than another. A reader should be able to tell which statements describe the tool and which describe an actual performance test.

Why the field may not appear on your GPU

HWiNFO support is not universal or fixed. Its 2016 release notes list reporting support for AMD RV7xx/M9x and NVIDIA Fermi, Kepler, and Maxwell GPUs; its 2022 release notes add AMD Vega and Navi discrete GPUs. These entries document selected families supported in those releases, not every GPU that exists today.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The dates matter because support was added in stages. A release note naming one set of families does not promise that a later or unrelated family exposes the same field. Conversely, the fact that a reading appeared for one generation does not mean every board based on that generation will expose it identically.

If you cannot find the field, check the GPU model and the version history for your installed HWiNFO release. Do not assume that every GPU exposes the same reading, or that a missing field means the card is defective. The relevant support may differ by family and software version. Recheck the official version history when documenting current availability, because monitoring-software support can change.

A practical way to interpret two cards’ results

Suppose two cards show different ASIC Quality percentages. The readings alone do not establish which card will deliver more frames. First check whether the readings come from the same monitoring tool and whether the publisher documents a shared calibration for those exact models. If that is not established, keep the percentages as separate observations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Then compare the cards using a shared performance test: the same named benchmark test, version, and score type, or the same game at matching resolution and settings. If the results differ, the benchmark or game run is the evidence about performance under those conditions; the ASIC Quality values do not replace or explain that test.

If the cards are different models, also keep the comparison question narrow. A result in one game at one resolution does not establish a universal ranking in every workload. Report what was measured, avoid extending it to untested workloads, and do not convert a percentage difference into a claimed FPS difference.

Does higher ASIC Quality mean better performance?

No documented rule here connects a higher displayed percentage to higher gaming performance. Performance depends on the GPU model and architecture, clocks under the test conditions, workload behavior, software, and the benchmark or game settings. The ASIC reading is not a substitute for measuring those conditions.

The same caution applies to value and efficiency. A percentage does not include purchase price, cooling design, board power, driver behavior, or the settings used in a game. Those questions require their own evidence.

Does ASIC Quality predict overclocking?

Do not treat the reading as a guaranteed overclocking indicator. The evidence does not establish that a higher value guarantees a higher stable clock, a particular voltage requirement, or a specific performance uplift. Stable overclocking outcomes require controlled testing of the individual card and its operating conditions.

If you discuss overclocking, report the actual settings and stability results separately from ASIC Quality. Do not imply that the percentage caused the result or that another card with a similar reading will behave the same way.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Ranking unlike models by percentage: the displayed scale is not established as universally comparable across generations or vendors.
  • Calling ASIC Quality a benchmark: it is a reported characteristic, not an FPS result or a named test score.
  • Assuming it predicts overclocking: the evidence here does not establish that a higher reading guarantees a better overclock or any specific outcome.
  • Mixing benchmark scores: use the same test and score type, since benchmarks may publish distinct Graphics, Physics, and Combined results.
  • Leaving out game settings: frame rates without the game, resolution, and visual-quality settings are difficult to interpret as a fair comparison.
  • Mixing estimates with measurements: identify whether a result is a benchmark-derived estimate or a directly tested game result.
  • Leaving out software version: HWiNFO support and reporting can differ by release, so name the version used.
  • Assuming every GPU supports the field: HWiNFO release notes identify specific families and versions; support should be checked for the device and software in use.
  • Inventing a formula: the exact NVIDIA SPEEDO-to-percentage conversion and model calibration range are not documented in the material used here.

A concise checklist for a fair comparison

  1. Write down each exact GPU model.
  2. Record the monitoring tool and version if ASIC Quality is shown.
  3. Label the ASIC percentage as a tool-specific hardware reading.
  4. Select one named benchmark test or one defined game workload.
  5. Match benchmark version, game build where possible, resolution, and visual settings.
  6. Use the same score type or frame-rate measure for every card.
  7. Keep benchmark results and ASIC readings in separate columns or sections.
  8. State clearly when a game result is an estimate rather than a direct measurement.
  9. Avoid claims about universal speed, value, efficiency, or overclocking based only on the percentage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ASIC Quality on a GPU?

It is a hardware-related value reported by some monitoring software for supported GPUs. It is a tool-specific reading, not an FPS result, named benchmark score, value rating, or guaranteed overclocking measure.

Can I compare ASIC Quality between GPUs?

You can record readings for individual cards, but do not rank different models by percentage unless the software publisher documents a common calibration for those exact devices. HWiNFO support notes identify selected families and releases rather than one universal scale.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does higher ASIC Quality mean better performance?

Not on the evidence available here. Use the same benchmark test or the same game at matching resolution and settings to compare performance. A higher displayed percentage alone does not establish higher frame rates.

What does NVIDIA GPU SPEEDO mean?

Recent secondary reporting describes HWiNFO’s newer NVIDIA percentage as derived from a hardware-defined SPEEDO value, with model-specific scaling and a relationship to factory voltage and frequency characteristics. The exact conversion formula and calibration range are not explained in the NVIDIA documentation located for this topic.

Why is ASIC Quality missing in HWiNFO?

HWiNFO support is selective and has changed by release. Its 2016 notes list AMD RV7xx/M9x and NVIDIA Fermi, Kepler, and Maxwell support, while 2022 notes add AMD Vega and Navi discrete GPUs. Check your exact GPU and HWiNFO version; a missing field is not a value of zero.

How should I compare two GPUs for gaming?

Use the same game, game build where possible, resolution, visual-quality settings, and reported frame-rate measure. If you use a benchmark estimate, identify it as an estimate. Keep ASIC Quality as a separate observation rather than a performance substitute.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can ASIC Quality tell me which card will overclock better?

No guarantee is established. A stable overclock requires testing the individual card under defined voltage, frequency, cooling, and workload conditions. Report those results separately from the ASIC reading.

Can a 3DMark score be compared with ASIC Quality?

No. A 3DMark score belongs to a defined test and scoring method. Time Spy’s Graphics score uses frame rates from its graphics tests and a scaling constant, while Fire Strike publishes distinct Graphics, Physics, and Combined scores. Use the same benchmark test and score type when comparing GPUs.

The Bottom Line

ASIC Quality is a tool-reported GPU characteristic, not a cross-model performance benchmark. Record the exact GPU and HWiNFO version, treat the percentage as a contextual observation, and do not infer FPS, value, or guaranteed overclocking ability from it. For performance decisions, compare the same named benchmark test or directly tested game with matching version, resolution, settings, and score or frame-rate measure.
