The reliable way to compare an appliance is to match the market, appliance type, capacity and test programme first, then convert the label’s standardized consumption into your own electricity and water costs. An EU A rating is not directly comparable with a U.S. EnergyGuide figure, and the cheapest appliance to run may not be the cheapest overall once purchase price, capacity and service life are included.
Start by writing down two facts: where the appliance will be sold and what type it is. Label scales, units, test assumptions and databases differ between the European Union and the United States, and a washing-machine figure cannot be compared with a dishwasher figure simply because both are expressed in kilowatt-hours.
1. Identify the market and appliance category
Before comparing numbers, record the country or market, appliance category, model capacity and the programme or test basis shown on each label. A label value is meaningful only within its category and standardized test.

- Market: EU labels and U.S. EnergyGuide labels use different systems. Do not rank an EU class letter against a U.S. class or annual-cost figure.
- Category: Compare washing machines with washing machines, dishwashers with dishwashers, and refrigerators with refrigerators.
- Service size: Keep drum capacity, place settings or refrigerator volume reasonably similar. A larger appliance can use more energy per cycle while still being the better choice for a larger household.
- Test basis: Note whether consumption is stated per cycle, per 100 cycles or as estimated annual use, and which programme produced the figure.
If you skip these checks, a lower-looking number can simply reflect a smaller capacity, a different programme or a different regulatory method.

2. Understand the label system in your market
European Union: the A-to-G rescaled label
The EU’s current product labels use a green-to-red A-to-G scale. For washing machines and washer-dryers, the A-to-G labels have applied since 1 March 2021. Older A+, A++ and A+++ marks were removed from several categories, including refrigerators, dishwashers and washing machines, during the 2021 rescaling. An old A+++ label and a current A label therefore do not represent the same scale.
The letter is a quick ranking within the current rules, not a bill estimate. Read the numerical consumption field beside it and check the capacity and programme used to obtain that value.
EU washing machines and washer-dryers
For washing machines, energy consumption is reported in kilowatt-hours per 100 cycles, based on the eco 40–60 programme. The label also gives water consumption per cycle, programme duration, airborne noise and capacity-related information. Washer-dryers have additional information because washing and drying can have different consumption patterns; make sure you are comparing the same operating mode.
EU dishwashers
The EU dishwasher label reports energy per 100 eco-programme cycles, rated place settings, programme duration, water per cycle and airborne noise. These requirements are set under Regulation (EU) 2019/2017. Compare place settings as well as energy: a model designed for more settings may be the more efficient choice for a full household load even if its per-cycle figure is higher.
EPREL: verify the exact EU model
Scanning the QR code on an EU label opens the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL). The public database is free and lets you search, sort and compare models sold in the EU. Depending on the product group, an entry may also include manufacturer links to spare parts, indicative costs or repair instructions. Check the exact model identifier, not merely a product family name, because regional variants can have different capacities or specifications.
United States: EnergyGuide and ENERGY STAR
In the United States, the yellow EnergyGuide label is intended for comparisons among similar models. ENERGY STAR’s dishwasher guidance says to use the label to determine a model’s energy use, compare similar models and estimate annual operating costs. Choose an appropriate capacity and consider features such as automatic-sensing cycles and selectable options.
EnergyGuide’s annual-use and annual-cost figures are standardized estimates. ENERGY STAR explains that the yearly cost is built from assumed annual consumption, average cycles per week and an average electricity price. The annual energy consumption (AEC) value itself does not appear on the EnergyGuide label, so the displayed dollar figure is not a prediction of your household bill.

U.S. refrigerator and freezer verification
The U.S. Department of Energy refrigerator/freezer rating tool allows searches by appliance type, brand, model and manufacturing year to discover estimated energy-consumption ranges. Its example of a 2000 Amana freezer estimates 537 kWh per year with a good door-seal condition. That number is tied to that model year and condition; it is not a general refrigerator benchmark.

3. Compare equivalent products with one worksheet
Create a row for each shortlisted model and fill in the same fields. This prevents a prominent class letter from hiding a difference in capacity or test assumptions.
| Comparison axis | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Energy | kWh per 100 cycles, kWh per cycle or estimated annual kWh; include the programme | Only matching units and test programmes can be compared directly. |
| Use pattern | Expected cycles, loads or operating hours per year | Your frequency determines how quickly a consumption difference affects cost. |
| Electricity price | Your tariff in currency per kWh, including time-of-use differences where relevant | Published annual dollars may use a different assumed rate. |
| Capacity | Washing load, place settings or refrigerator volume | A larger load may replace multiple smaller loads. |
| Water | Litres or gallons per cycle and your variable water/sewer rate | Water can be a material operating cost in some homes. |
| Time and sound | Eco-programme duration and noise emissions | A longer or louder appliance may be unsuitable even when its energy figure is lower. |
| Ownership cost | Purchase price plus estimated utility cost over a stated period | The lowest running cost does not automatically produce the lowest total cost. |
Keep the capacity within a sensible range. Comparing a compact dishwasher with a full-size model because their labels show similar kWh values can give a misleading result if the compact model requires two runs to handle the same dishes.
4. Read the actual consumption field, not just the class
Use the class as a screening tool, then compare the number behind it. For EU washers and dishwashers, the most useful figure is commonly kWh per 100 cycles on the specified eco programme. Divide by 100 to obtain an approximate kWh per standardized cycle.
Read the other fields at the same time:
- Water per cycle: Use it with your local water and sewer charges when those charges vary with consumption.
- Capacity: Match the rated load or place settings to how much you normally wash.
- Programme duration: Eco cycles can take longer; the lower energy figure does not mean the cycle is fast.
- Noise: The listed airborne-noise value matters for open-plan homes or appliances near bedrooms.
For U.S. models, read the EnergyGuide estimated yearly use and cost together with the assumptions printed on the label. Use them to rank similar models, then replace the assumed price and usage with your own figures where possible.
5. Convert a label value into your own electricity cost
For a value expressed per 100 cycles, use this formula:
Annual electricity cost = (label kWh per 100 cycles × expected annual cycles ÷ 100) × your electricity rate per kWh
This is an estimate based on standardized consumption. It is not a quotation for your utility bill.

Worked example: an EU dishwasher
Suppose one dishwasher shows 70 kWh per 100 eco cycles and you expect 280 cycles per year. At a household rate of $0.18 per kWh:

- Convert the label value to your usage: 70 × 280 ÷ 100 = 196 kWh per year.
- Apply your tariff: 196 × $0.18 = $35.28 per year for electricity.
If another equivalent model shows 90 kWh per 100 cycles, the same use would be 252 kWh per year, or $45.36 at that tariff. The $10.08 difference is meaningful only if capacity, programme, water use and purchase price are otherwise acceptable.
When the label gives kWh per cycle
Multiply the per-cycle value by your expected annual cycles and then by your tariff. Do not divide a per-cycle figure by 100; the 100-cycle conversion applies only when the label explicitly uses kWh per 100 cycles.
When the U.S. label gives annual cost
Use the displayed annual cost as a standardized comparison between similar models. To tailor it, identify the label’s assumed cycles and electricity price if shown, then recalculate with your own annual use and tariff. ENERGY STAR notes that the underlying annual-cost estimate uses average cycles per week and an average energy price, so a household with a different schedule or rate will see a different result.
6. Add water and sewer costs separately
If the label states water per cycle and your bill includes a variable water or sewer charge, calculate that component independently:
Annual water cost = litres (or gallons) per cycle × annual cycles × your combined variable water/sewer price per litre (or gallon)
For example, a dishwasher using 9 litres per eco cycle at 280 cycles uses 2,520 litres per year. Multiply 2,520 by the rate on your water bill. If your bill is mostly fixed or your water charge is negligible, record the usage for environmental and capacity decisions without assigning a false monetary saving.
Do not add water cost to an electricity-only comparison unless you have a defensible local rate. Water pricing structures vary substantially, and a standardized appliance label does not know your utility’s fixed charges, sewer tier or drought surcharge.

Total ownership cost = purchase price + (annual electricity cost × years) + (annual water cost × years)
Keep one-time and recurring amounts distinct. Do not treat a promotional electricity figure, an assumed federal-facility rate or a manufacturer’s indicative cost as a guaranteed household saving.
| Item | Model A | Model B |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase price | $700 | $820 |
| Electricity estimate at your tariff | $62/year | $44/year |
| Water estimate | $18/year | $15/year |
| Illustrative 8-year utilities | $640 | $472 |
| Illustrative 8-year total | $1,340 | $1,292 |
The table is an arithmetic example, not a market claim. It shows why a higher purchase price can be recovered through lower running costs, but only under the stated usage, tariff and ownership period. Include expected maintenance or replacement risk only when you have reliable, model-specific evidence; do not invent a repair allowance.

Capacity and loading
Choose a size that can handle your normal load. A smaller appliance with a lower per-cycle figure may consume more over a week if it forces extra cycles. Conversely, an oversized appliance can waste resources when routinely run half empty.
Programme choice and duration
Label values normally refer to a named standardized programme, not every setting. If you regularly use intensive, hot, rapid or drying programmes, your real consumption can differ. Record the programmes you actually expect to use and treat the label value as a consistent baseline for comparing models.
Noise and placement
Compare the listed noise emissions when the appliance will operate near living or sleeping areas. A small energy advantage may not justify a model that is disruptive in your floor plan.
Features that change use
Automatic sensing, half-load options, delayed starts and selectable temperatures can change how often and how intensively the appliance runs. A feature matters financially only if you will use it and it changes your cycles or resource use.
9. Verify the exact model and date
- Copy the complete model identifier from the appliance listing or label.
- Check the QR-linked EPREL entry for an EU product, confirming capacity, consumption, programme and noise fields.
- For a U.S. refrigerator or freezer, search the DOE rating tool by type, brand, model and manufacturing year.
- For U.S. dishwashers, compare the EnergyGuide figures for models with similar capacity and review the assumptions behind annual cost.
- Recheck the record immediately before purchase if the listing has changed; model suffixes and regional versions can differ.
Official databases are especially useful when retailer pages omit a field or mix specifications from several variants.

10. Common comparison mistakes and how to fix them
Mistake: treating an EU letter as a universal score
Fix: Compare only within the same current EU category and use the kWh figure. Do not compare an EU A label directly with a U.S. EnergyGuide annual-cost figure.
Mistake: comparing different capacities
Fix: Group models by similar load, place settings or volume before ranking energy use.
Mistake: using the label’s dollars as your bill
Fix: Replace the assumed electricity price and annual cycles with your tariff and routine. Keep the result labelled as an estimate.

Fix: Write down “eco 40–60,” “eco programme” or the exact U.S. test assumptions beside every number. Exclude figures that do not use a comparable basis.
Mistake: omitting water cost
Fix: Add water and sewer charges separately when they are variable and material; otherwise report water use without pretending it is a precise saving.
Mistake: assuming the most efficient model has the lowest total cost
Fix: Calculate purchase price plus utilities over a stated ownership period and then apply capacity, noise, duration and fit constraints.
Mistake: relying on an old label or a family-level listing
Fix: Confirm the current label and exact model record in EPREL or the relevant U.S. database. The EU scale changed in 2021, and U.S. refrigerator estimates can depend on manufacturing year and condition.

- Have I identified the market and the exact appliance category?
- Are the shortlisted models close enough in capacity to serve the same need?
- Do the energy figures use the same unit and programme basis?
- Have I converted per-100-cycle or per-cycle data using my expected annual use?
- Did I use my electricity tariff instead of an unexplained average?
- Are water and sewer charges material for this purchase, and did I calculate them separately?
- Will the programme duration and noise suit the installation location?
- Have I compared purchase price plus utilities over a stated ownership period?
- Did I verify the exact model in EPREL, the DOE lookup or the current EnergyGuide information?
12. Interpreting published dollar examples
Federal purchasing examples from the U.S. Department of Energy use explicit electricity-price assumptions: $0.099 per kWh on its refrigerator example and $0.09 per kWh on its dishwasher example. Those are federal-facility assumptions, not current residential tariffs. Use them only to understand how a published calculation was constructed, never as a substitute for the rate on your own bill.
Likewise, the DOE example of 537 kWh per year for a 2000 Amana freezer with good door seals is a model- and condition-specific illustration. It should not be used as a normal annual-use figure for all freezers.
What a good buying decision looks like
A defensible choice has a transparent trail: same market, same category, similar capacity, matching test basis, your own tariff, realistic annual use and a stated ownership period. The class letter helps you narrow the field; the consumption number and your arithmetic determine the likely operating cost; capacity, water, time, noise and fit determine whether the appliance will work well in your home. Verify the final model record before paying, because a polished retailer summary is not a substitute for the current official label data.
