Your Android phone’s security support can vary by model, market, and carrier. Before buying, compare the exact model’s support duration and start date, then check whether the relevant updates and safety features are available for your version. A long support commitment matters, but it does not mean every Android phone receives updates at the same time or offers identical protections.
What to compare when phone safety matters
There is no sound basis in the available manufacturer information for naming one Android phone the “safest” across all models and regions. Instead, compare the factors that determine how long a phone is expected to receive security updates and which protections it can use.
- Length of security support: Look for a stated duration or a specific final support date.
- Start of the clock: Find out when the commitment begins. It may be based on the model’s availability, not your purchase date.
- Scope: Confirm that the policy covers the exact model, market, and carrier variant you are considering.
- Delivery: Check whether the manufacturer states an update frequency, and do not assume all eligible devices receive updates simultaneously.
- Feature availability: Verify that a particular safety protection is supported on that model and in your region.
These checks are particularly important when buying a used phone: an older device may have less time remaining under its original support commitment.

How long do Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy phones receive updates?
The published commitments below are not directly equivalent. Google specifies which Pixel models are covered and when its support clock begins. Samsung describes support of up to seven years for Galaxy mobile devices, with availability and timing varying by product and market.

For either manufacturer, ask for the support terms that apply to the precise model you plan to buy. A family-level statement is not a substitute for confirming a particular phone’s eligibility and remaining support period.
Why an eligible phone may not get an update immediately
Support duration and update delivery are separate questions. Samsung says carriers develop and release updates, and distribution can happen in waves. Its guidance also notes that unlocked phones can receive updates later than carrier-branded devices. As a result, a phone can be covered by a support policy without receiving a particular update on the same day as another variant.

When timing matters, check update availability for the exact model and carrier version rather than relying only on the headline support period. Samsung’s update availability and carrier guidance explains these rollout caveats.

Check the phone’s current Android version and security-update level
On a phone you already own—or a device you can inspect before buying—check the installed software status. Google says the Android version and security-update level are shown in Settings. On Samsung Galaxy devices, use the Software update settings; the menu path can vary by model, software version, and provider.

- Open Settings and find the section showing the Android version and security-update level. Google’s Pixel update-policy page explains where to check those details.
- On a Galaxy phone, open Settings and look for Software update to check for updates. Follow Samsung’s Galaxy update instructions; menu names and locations may differ by model, software version, and provider.
- Record the exact model and carrier variant, then compare them with the manufacturer’s support terms and the phone’s current update status.
A displayed security-update level tells you what is installed on the device; it does not, by itself, establish how long the manufacturer will continue supporting that model.
Do safety features mean every Android phone offers the same protection?
No. A vendor’s feature description is not proof that every Android device has the same feature or that it will work in every circumstance. Google describes Pixel-specific protections on its Pixel privacy and security page. For example, Google states, “Every Pixel comes with factory reset protection for enhanced anti-theft security.” That is Google’s description of its products, not an independent comparative test of Android phones.

Emergency features also have practical limits. Google cautions that a feature dependent on network connectivity and other factors “may not be reliable for emergency communications or available in all areas.” Check the feature’s availability and conditions for the specific device and location rather than treating its presence in product materials as a guarantee.
Google’s 2026 Android security and privacy overview says some features initially launch on Pixel. That is another reason not to assume that a protection announced for Android is immediately available on every manufacturer’s phone.

Questions to ask before buying a new or used Android phone
- What is the exact model number and carrier variant?
- How long will this model receive security updates, and when does that period begin?
- How much of the support period remains, based on the model’s start date?
- Do the terms apply in my market and to this carrier version?
- Does the manufacturer state an update frequency, and are there rollout conditions?
- Are the safety features I care about available on this model and in my region?
Google and Samsung’s published policies provide useful examples, but they do not establish a complete comparison of every Android manufacturer and model. Confirm the terms for the phone in front of you instead of treating an operating-system label or a broad support headline as a guarantee of equal safety.
