The cheapest-looking iPhone deal is not necessarily the cheapest purchase. Compare the same model and storage, the same wireless service, and the same ownership period. Then add upfront taxes and fees, device payments, required plan charges, and other mandatory costs, and subtract only the trade-in and bill credits you are actually eligible to receive.

All-in cost for a fixed period = upfront taxes and fees + net device payments during the period + required service-plan charges during the period + other required charges − credits actually received. A zero-dollar device payment can still cost more if it requires a pricier plan or credits that disappear when you change service.

Start with one comparable total

Every offer should be converted into a cost for the same number of months and the same service package. A 24-month Apple financing offer cannot be fairly compared with a 36-month carrier promotion unless you calculate both over a common period or show both periods separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For each offer, calculate:

  • Taxes and fees due at checkout or signing.
  • Device installments, lease payments, or the outright device price during the comparison period.
  • The full price of the required wireless plan for the actual number of lines.
  • Activation, upgrade, shipping, or other mandatory charges.
  • Only the trade-in value and promotional bill credits that the customer qualifies to receive and is expected to collect.

Keep an immediate trade-in reduction separate from a future bill credit. An immediate reduction lowers the amount financed now. A monthly credit is conditional and arrives only while its eligibility rules continue to be met.

Define the comparison before collecting prices

Fix the iPhone configuration

Record the exact generation, model, storage capacity, color if it changes the price, and full retail price. Comparing a base model with a Pro model, or 128 GB with 512 GB, produces a misleading result even when the advertised monthly payments look similar.

Fix the service requirement

Write down the number of lines, expected data use, hotspot needs, international features, and any age or account eligibility. A one-line illustration may not apply to a family account. If a promotion requires a more expensive plan than the one you would otherwise choose, the difference is part of the promotion’s cost.

Choose an ownership horizon

Use the period that matches the decision: the installment term, the time you normally keep a phone, or the date you expect to change carriers. If an offer has 36 monthly credits but you may leave after 24 months, calculate the 24-month cost and show the unpaid device balance and credits that would be lost.

Build an offer worksheet

Collect these fields for Apple, carrier, and retailer routes before doing any arithmetic.

Field What to record Why it changes the result
Device Exact iPhone model, storage, and full retail price Different configurations have different financed balances and trade-in values.
Trade-in Your device, condition, quoted value, and when the value is paid A maximum advertised value is not a guaranteed value for every condition.
Device payment Monthly amount, number of payments, and amount due at signing The advertised monthly figure may exclude taxes or fees.
Wireless plan Price for your line count and the plan required by the offer A low phone payment can be offset by a higher service bill.
Promotion credit Credit amount per month, number of credits, start date, and eligibility rules Credits can stop when a line, plan, trade-in, or account condition changes.
Upfront charges Sales tax, activation or upgrade fee, shipping, and other separate charges These may be due outside the device installment.
Exit consequences Remaining device balance, forfeited credits, and payoff requirements after cancellation, plan change, or early upgrade The cost at your likely exit date may differ sharply from the advertised total.
Flexibility Lock status and carrier-switching restrictions A cheaper offer can be less useful if you need to move service before payoff.

Normalize credits and trade-ins

Immediate trade-in credit

When a trade-in is applied immediately toward the purchase or financing balance, subtract it once from the amount being financed. Do not also subtract the same value as a monthly promotion. Apple describes its Trade In process as credit toward a new iPhone; its support information says the financed amount is reduced by the value received for the old device.

Monthly bill credits

Carrier promotions commonly spread a discount across a fixed number of bills. Count a credit only for months in which the line, plan, qualifying trade-in, and every other stated condition remains satisfied. Record the first month in which the credit appears; a credit that starts after an account change should not be counted in earlier months.

Trade-in plus bill credit

Some offers use both mechanisms. Treat the trade-in value and the promotional credits as separate rows, then verify that the terms do not require you to choose one. Subtract each only once and only in the month or transaction in which it is actually received.

Compare the main purchase routes

Apple purchase with Trade In

An Apple purchase can reduce the financed or checkout amount by the value assigned to your old phone. The key questions are the exact condition-based value, when Apple receives and approves the device, and whether taxes are calculated before or after the credit in your transaction. Keep the receipt and final trade-in confirmation because the initial estimate can depend on inspection.

Apple Card Monthly Installments

Apple describes Apple Card Monthly Installments as a 0% APR option subject to credit approval and credit limit. For an iPhone, Apple says you select an eligible carrier at checkout; prepaid plans are not supported. Taxes and shipping are not included in the installment amount and are billed separately to the Apple Card, where the card’s variable APR can apply. Apple’s legal installment terms also describe taxes and fees based on the full retail price and possible carrier charges.

Use the amount shown at checkout rather than assuming that a displayed 0% device payment covers every purchase cost. Add the separately billed tax, shipping, and any carrier charge to the same comparison period.

Carrier installments with promotional credits

A carrier may advertise an iPhone as free or heavily discounted while collecting the retail price through installments and returning part of it as monthly bill credits. The phone portion cannot be evaluated without the qualifying plan, line requirements, trade-in rules, credit duration, and exit terms.

Calculate the plan premium over your realistic alternative. If the promotion requires a costlier plan, multiply that incremental price by every month in the comparison period, then add it to the net device cost. Use your own line count and eligibility; a one-line example is not a universal family-plan result.

Apple Upgrade lease

Apple announced Apple Upgrade in the United States in July 2026 as a leasing option. Eligible customers may use trade-in credit to reduce lease payments, but a lease is not the same as owning the phone through installments. Compare the full lease term, any return or upgrade conditions, and any buyout obligation with the period you intend to keep the device.

Apple says eligible participants in its prior iPhone Upgrade Program may have several routes, including Apple Upgrade, Apple Card Monthly Installments, an outright purchase, or carrier financing. Its September 2026 iPhone 18 Pro announcement gives example Apple Upgrade lease payments but excludes taxes and trade-in credits from those examples. Treat the monthly example as a starting figure, not as the total cost.

Account for lock and switching rules

Apple’s buying guidance says an iPhone purchased from Apple outright or through Apple financing is unlocked. Apple’s store FAQ says an iPhone financed through AT&T’s Installment Plan, T-Mobile’s Equipment Installment Plan, or Verizon’s Device Payment Program is locked until paid in full. Confirm the terms for the specific transaction because carrier policies and purchase routes can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A locked phone can affect your comparison even when the arithmetic favors the carrier. If you might switch before payoff, include the remaining installments and any credits that would be forfeited, and verify when the device becomes eligible for unlocking.

Use a common-period calculation

  1. Set the period. Choose, for example, the expected time on the account or the longest installment term. If your likely exit date is earlier, calculate that date separately.
  2. Enter the retail price and upfront charges. Include sales tax, activation or upgrade fees, shipping, and any amount due at signing.
  3. Enter device payments by month. Show the gross installment or lease payment before credits.
  4. Enter the service bill. Use the required plan price for the actual line count, not a headline price for a different account.
  5. Enter credits on their actual schedule. Start a monthly credit only when the terms say it begins and stop it when eligibility ends.
  6. Apply the trade-in once. Subtract an immediate value at checkout or the month it is credited; do not subtract it again from later bills.
  7. Model an early exit. Add the unpaid device balance and remove all future credits if cancellation, a plan change, or an early upgrade would trigger those results.
  8. Compare like with like. Put every route beside the same device, service package, and period before choosing.

A spreadsheet layout that prevents double counting

Create one row per month and columns for each cost component:

  • Month number.
  • Gross device payment.
  • Device bill credit.
  • Required plan charge.
  • Other monthly required charges.
  • One-time charges assigned to month zero.
  • Trade-in credit, entered once.
  • Net monthly cost.

For each month, calculate gross device payment minus that month’s bill credit, then add the plan and other required charges. Add taxes, activation, shipping, and the immediate trade-in adjustment in the transaction month. Sum the rows through the selected period. A second worksheet can model cancellation by ending credits on the cancellation month and adding the remaining payoff shown in the live agreement.

Illustrative three-year plan-cost scenario

Kiplinger’s October 2026 comparison reported the following illustrative three-year costs for one line and an iPhone 18 Pro scenario:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Plan scenario Reported three-year cost Reported possible saving from a lower-cost plan
T-Mobile Essential Savers 2.0 $3,000 $600 for the two T-Mobile examples
T-Mobile 55+ Essential Choice 55 2.0 $2,460 $600 for the two T-Mobile examples
Verizon Simplicity Plan $2,280 Not reported for this scenario
AT&T Value 2.0 $2,640 $360 for the AT&T example

These figures are the publisher’s specific one-line scenario, not universal carrier prices or guaranteed savings. They do not replace checking the current plan terms, eligibility, taxes, fees, device credits, and your own line count. The useful lesson is structural: the service total belongs beside the device total.

Check the offer at each decision point

Before ordering

  • Confirm the model, storage, retail price, and exact trade-in device and condition.
  • Read the required plan, line, new-customer, and account eligibility rules.
  • Record the number and timing of every expected credit.
  • Ask what happens to credits and installments after a plan change, cancellation, or early upgrade.
  • Calculate taxes and fees separately from the advertised monthly device payment.

At checkout or signing

  • Save the displayed installment or lease schedule.
  • Record the amount charged immediately and which charges are billed separately.
  • Verify whether the trade-in is an instant reduction, a later account credit, or a combination.
  • Check the device-lock and unlocking language for that transaction.

After the first bills

  • Confirm that the device payment matches the agreement.
  • Check that the promised credit appears and that the required plan remains active.
  • Keep shipping, trade-in acceptance, and promotional confirmation records.
  • Recalculate before changing plans or upgrading; a new offer can cause old credits to stop.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Calling the phone free

A device installment offset by credits is not automatically free. Include the required service, taxes, fees, credit duration, and eligibility conditions. Use “free phone payment” only when describing the narrow installment line, not the all-in cost.

Using the maximum trade-in value

Maximum values usually depend on a particular model and condition. Enter the quote for your exact phone after inspection and count it only once.

Comparing monthly device payments alone

A low device payment can hide a higher plan price. Add the plan premium over the full comparison period and use the same line count for every route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring taxes and separate charges

Apple’s financing materials specifically distinguish taxes, shipping, and possible carrier charges from the installment amount. Carrier agreements can also collect activation or upgrade fees separately. Put each charge in the worksheet rather than treating it as included.

Assuming every credit is guaranteed

A credit can depend on a qualifying trade-in, a specific plan, a new line, or remaining eligible for a stated term. Mark conditional credits in a separate column and model the cost if eligibility ends.

Comparing unequal periods

A 36-month promotion can look cheaper than a 24-month purchase simply because the discount is spread over more bills. Show both offers over a common period and disclose any balance or lost credits at the earlier exit date.

Forgetting lock status

If you may travel, change carriers, or sell the phone before payoff, include the practical cost of a lock and the conditions for unlocking. Verify the current transaction terms instead of relying on a general policy remembered from another purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to choose after the math

Choose an upfront or Apple-financed purchase when flexibility matters

An outright or Apple-financed iPhone can be easier to compare because the device cost is separated from a carrier’s long credit schedule. Apple states that phones bought from Apple outright or through Apple financing are unlocked. You still need to add taxes, shipping, and the service plan you choose.

Choose a carrier promotion when you will stay eligible

A carrier promotion can win when its required plan is one you would buy anyway, the trade-in value is realistic, and you expect to remain on the qualifying account through every credit month. Recalculate if any of those assumptions is uncertain.

Choose a lease when upgrading is the priority

A lease may fit someone who values a planned upgrade path more than ownership. Compare the total lease payments and conditions with the cost of buying and keeping the phone. Include return, upgrade, and buyout requirements in the same period calculation.

What to verify because offers change

Carrier promotions, trade-in values, taxes, fees, locks, and eligibility can change quickly. The cited Kiplinger figures are dated October 2026, and Apple’s Upgrade announcement and iPhone 18 Pro examples are from 2026. Treat them as dated illustrations, not permanent prices. Before purchasing, read the live offer, save its terms, and confirm the final checkout amounts for your account.

Bottom line

The right comparison is the cost of the phone and the service together, over the time you expect to keep the deal. Count only credits you can actually earn, separate immediate trade-in value from conditional monthly credits, include every upfront charge, and model what happens if you leave early. That calculation reveals whether a “free” iPhone is truly cheaper for your account.
