There is no occupation that current evidence certifies as “AI-proof.” A better decision is to compare a career’s entry route, time and effort to become employable, median pay, projected growth, annual openings, local constraints, and the tasks technology may change. Use U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) figures as a national baseline, then verify state licensing, regional wages, training access, and local vacancies before enrolling.

This framework shows how to make that comparison without treating a projection as a guarantee. It uses two illustrative skilled-trade paths—electricians and heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers—to show why training route, pay, and demand must be read together.

What “AI-proof” can—and cannot—mean

“AI-proof” is useful shorthand for a career you believe may remain valuable as software and automation improve. It is not a measurable guarantee in the BLS data. Employment projections estimate how many jobs the economy may support under stated assumptions; they do not certify that an occupation is immune to artificial-intelligence-related change.

BLS projections also reflect population trends, business conditions, technology, replacement hiring, and other economic factors. Artificial intelligence is only one influence. An occupation can gain demand because organizations adopt AI, lose tasks to automation, or experience both effects at once. The relevant question is therefore not “Can AI ever affect this job?” but “How exposed are the job’s tasks, and does the occupation still offer a realistic route to work and income for me?”

BLS provides duties, work environment, typical education and training, median pay, and outlook in its Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH). Its wage figures come from the Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey. Read the methodology and definitions at BLS’s explanation of OOH occupational information.

Start with a consistent U.S. labor-market baseline

Do not mix figures from different projection vintages as if they were one forecast. The education-level analysis uses 2024–34 projections and 2024 wages, while the electrician and HVAC profiles below use May 2025 wages and 2025–35 projections. Keep the period and wage year attached to every number in your worksheet.

Measure Official figure How to interpret it
Average annual openings, all occupations, 2024–34 About 19 million per year Openings include people leaving an occupation or the labor force, not just newly created jobs.
Median annual wage, all occupations, 2024 $49,500 This is the middle of the wage distribution, not a starting-salary promise.
Net U.S. job growth, 2024–34 5.2 million jobs A national total across the economy, not a forecast for a particular occupation.
Total employment growth, 2024–34 3.1% Change in the number of jobs; it does not count replacement openings separately.
Fastest-growing sector, 2024–34 Healthcare and social assistance, 8.4% Sector-level context that cannot by itself identify an AI-resilient occupation.

These figures come from BLS’s education and projected-openings analysis and the 2024–34 Employment Projections release. The release states: The U.S. economy is projected to add 5.2 million jobs from 2024 to 2034. That statement describes the economy as a whole, not the safety of any individual career.

A six-part comparison method

Use the same questions for every occupation you are considering. A consistent method prevents a high wage from hiding a difficult entry route or a high growth rate from hiding a very small job market.

  1. Define the target job. Write the exact occupation title and the work setting you want. “Technology,” “healthcare,” or “the trades” is too broad for a useful comparison.
  2. Map the entry route. Record the typical education level, apprenticeship or certificate route, related work experience, on-the-job training, examinations, and licensing. Note which steps are paid employment and which require tuition.
  3. Measure time and access. Find the calendar length published by a recognized school, apprenticeship sponsor, or licensing authority for your location. If no source gives a duration for the specific path, do not substitute a generic boot-camp or degree length. Also record schedule, transportation, equipment, prerequisites, and selection requirements.
  4. Compare pay correctly. Use the median wage for the same year and geography, then seek local wage distributions and entry-level offers. A median describes the midpoint of workers’ pay; it is not what a new entrant is assured of earning.
  5. Read demand in two ways. Capture both projected percentage growth and average annual openings for the same period. Growth measures the change in total employment. Openings include replacement hiring, so a mature occupation can have many openings even with modest growth.
  6. Check task exposure and feasibility. Read the OOH duties and work-environment sections, identify which tasks could be assisted or automated, and list the human, physical, regulatory, or customer requirements that remain. Then verify that the local schedule, conditions, and licensing rules fit your circumstances.

You can turn the results into a personal scorecard by assigning weights that reflect your priorities—for example, entry accessibility, income, local openings, schedule, and tolerance for technology change. The weights are your decision tool, not a BLS statistic. Keep the underlying evidence visible so a single appealing score cannot conceal a deal-breaking constraint.

How to compare training time and entry requirements

BLS often reports education categories rather than one universal calendar duration. “Typical education” tells you the credential level associated with entry; it does not tell every reader how many months a particular program will take. Ask the institution or apprenticeship sponsor for a written schedule, paid and unpaid hours, completion requirements, and the credential or license earned.

Apprenticeship route

Electricians typically learn through an apprenticeship, and most states require electricians to be licensed. An apprenticeship can combine supervised work with classroom instruction, so compare the wage progression, work hours, classroom schedule, completion standard, and state licensing alignment rather than judging it only by tuition. The electrician profile is at BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook: Electricians.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Postsecondary nondegree route

Heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers typically need a postsecondary nondegree award. Lengthy on-the-job training is common, and licensing or certification may be required depending on the work and jurisdiction. Confirm whether a program prepares you for the specific exam or credential employers request, what tools and safety equipment you must supply, and whether it includes supervised field experience. See the BLS HVAC mechanics and installers profile.

Questions that reveal the real training burden

  • What is the published calendar length for this exact program and attendance pattern?
  • Can you earn wages while training, and how does pay change after each verified milestone?
  • Which education, age, background-check, driving, mathematics, or physical prerequisites apply?
  • Which state or local license, registration, or certification is required for the tasks I want to perform?
  • Are tools, protective equipment, examination fees, transportation, and unpaid practice included in the quoted cost?
  • What happens if a class is full, an apprenticeship sponsor has no opening, or I fail an examination?
  • Does the credential transfer if I move to another state?

Compare these answers in calendar time and total out-of-pocket cost. A shorter course may still leave you unable to work independently until you obtain supervised experience or a license; a paid apprenticeship may reduce tuition but require a competitive selection process or a commute.

How to compare pay without mistaking a median for a promise

Use the same wage reference year and geography for every option. National BLS medians are useful for a first screen, but regional pay can differ substantially by metropolitan area, industry, experience, overtime, and licensing status. Ask employers or a state labor-market information office for entry-level ranges and progression, and separate base wages from overtime, travel allowances, bonuses, and self-employment revenue.

Occupation Typical entry and training evidence Median annual wage Projected demand
Electricians Most learn through an apprenticeship; most states require licensing. $63,190 per year, May 2025, U.S. national median Employment projected to grow 9% from 2025 to 2035; about 72,700 openings per year on average.
Heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers Typically a postsecondary nondegree award; lengthy on-the-job training is typical; licensing or certification may be needed. $61,010 per year, May 2025, U.S. national median Employment projected to grow 11% from 2025 to 2035; about 40,600 openings per year on average.

The figures in this table are from the two current BLS OOH profiles linked above. They are national medians for May 2025, not advertised starting salaries or an individual forecast. Before choosing, look for the local median, the lower and upper wage percentiles where available, and the pay attached to the first license or certification you can realistically obtain.

How to read demand: growth, openings, and replacement hiring

Percentage growth and annual openings answer different questions. Growth tells you how quickly total employment is expected to change relative to its starting level. Annual openings tell you how many positions may become available on average, including jobs vacated when workers retire, change occupations, or leave the labor force.

In the trade comparison, HVAC has the higher projected growth rate for 2025–35, while electrician work has more projected annual openings. That does not establish that either path is safer from AI, nor does it indicate how many openings will be available in your county. A larger occupation can generate more openings even with a lower percentage increase; a small occupation can post a striking growth rate yet add relatively few jobs.

BLS gives the same warning at the national level: wind turbine service technicians and solar photovoltaic installers are among the fastest-growing occupations in the 2024–34 release, but together they are projected to add fewer than 20,000 jobs. A fast percentage is not a substitute for checking the absolute number of positions, their locations, and the credentials employers require.

When you record demand, write the projection period beside the number and keep growth and openings in separate columns. Do not combine the 2024–34 all-occupation figures with the 2025–35 occupation profiles to create a single ranking.

How AI uncertainty changes the comparison

Assess AI at the task level, not by job title or wage. For each occupation, list routine information handling, diagnostic or planning work, physical execution, interaction with customers or teams, compliance responsibilities, and decisions made under changing conditions. Then ask whether tools are likely to automate a task, assist a worker, or create new demand for the occupation. Only use task and work-environment descriptions documented for that occupation; do not infer resilience merely because work is well paid or performed in person.

The BLS 2024–34 release illustrates why technology can have mixed effects. It says demand for AI-based systems and data processing is expected to support demand for data scientists. It also says cyberattacks and data breaches are expected to contribute to demand for information security analysts. Technology can therefore increase demand in some occupations while changing the way work is performed. Those observations do not prove that any specific occupation is immune to future automation.

Treat an AI-resilience claim as a hypothesis to monitor. Favor paths where you can keep learning, earn recognized credentials, and move among employers or related specialties. Revisit the OOH profile, professional standards, employer postings, and local training options as tools and regulations change. A career decision should remain useful even if the technology forecast is wrong.

What the electrician and HVAC examples teach

Electrician path

The electrician route demonstrates a relatively formal earn-and-learn entry model. Apprenticeship is the typical training route, and state licensing is common. Your feasibility check should therefore focus on whether a sponsor is available nearby, how selection works, what supervised work is permitted before full licensure, and which examinations or hours your state recognizes. Compare construction, manufacturing, utilities, and maintenance employers because the work setting can affect schedule, travel, safety requirements, and pay progression.

Do not assume the national outlook applies uniformly. A region building housing, factories, data infrastructure, or renewable-energy projects may have a different hiring pattern from a region with little construction. Confirm local openings and licensing rules before paying for classroom training.

HVAC mechanics and installers path

The HVAC route demonstrates why a nondegree credential and substantial on-the-job learning still require a careful plan. Ask whether the program covers the equipment types used by local employers, refrigerant-handling or other legally required credentials, electrical and controls fundamentals, and troubleshooting in the field. Licensing and certification requirements can vary by jurisdiction and by the type of installation or repair.

Work may be seasonal or involve emergency calls, customer homes, rooftops, confined spaces, or travel, depending on the employer. Check the actual job postings in your area for schedule, driving, physical, and customer-service expectations. A nationally favorable outlook cannot tell you whether those conditions fit your health, transport, or family responsibilities.

Decision area Evidence to collect Decision question
Entry education OOH typical education; program or apprenticeship prerequisites Can I meet the prerequisites without an unplanned preparatory course?
Training calendar Published start dates, attendance pattern, supervised hours, completion standard Can I sustain the schedule and income gap until employability?
Credential and licensing State board rules, examination requirements, renewal, reciprocity Will this credential legally qualify me for the work I want?
Training cost Tuition, tools, safety equipment, transport, exam and license fees What is the total cost, and what expenses are excluded?
Pay National median by wage year; local ranges; overtime and progression Does realistic early-career pay cover my obligations?
Demand Projection period, growth rate, annual openings, local postings Are there enough accessible employers, not merely a high percentage?
Work conditions OOH work environment; employer schedules, travel, physical and customer requirements Can I perform the work safely and consistently?
Technology change Tasks likely to be assisted, automated, regulated, or newly created Can I keep adding valuable skills if tools change?

For a transparent decision, preserve the source date beside every entry. If a local wage or opening count is unavailable, continue looking through your state labor-market agency, licensing board, community college, apprenticeship sponsor, and current employer postings rather than treating the national number as a local guarantee.

Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them

  • Calling a projection “AI-proof.” Correct it by describing the projection as expected labor demand for a stated period and discussing task exposure separately.
  • Choosing the highest growth percentage. Add annual openings and the occupation’s absolute size. A small occupation can grow quickly while offering few accessible positions.
  • Using a median as a starting wage. Label the wage year and source, then obtain entry-level and local ranges.
  • Assuming a degree is always required. Check apprenticeship and postsecondary nondegree routes, along with licensing and supervised experience.
  • Ignoring replacement hiring. Remember that many openings arise when workers leave an occupation or the labor force; openings do not equal net new jobs.
  • Combining incompatible periods. Keep 2024–34 education-level figures separate from 2025–35 occupation-profile figures.
  • Skipping local rules. Verify state licensing, reciprocity, permits, and employer requirements before enrolling.
  • Overlooking feasibility. A path can look attractive nationally yet fail because of transport, schedule, physical demands, tuition, or limited local sponsors.

A practical sequence for making the decision

  1. Select three to five exact occupation titles rather than broad industries.
  2. Read each current OOH profile and save the publication date, education route, work environment, median wage year, projection period, growth, and openings.
  3. Contact the relevant state licensing authority and at least one local training or apprenticeship source to verify prerequisites, calendar length, cost, and credential recognition.
  4. Collect current local job postings and record location, schedule, license, experience, pay range, travel, and physical requirements.
  5. Separate facts from assumptions in your worksheet. Mark your own preferences—such as tolerance for travel or irregular hours—as decision criteria, not labor-market evidence.
  6. Rank the options using weights that reflect your financial and personal priorities, then test the top choice against a downside scenario: delayed training, lower starting pay, fewer local openings, or faster-than-expected task automation.
  7. Choose the path with an achievable entry plan and a way to continue learning, not the path with the most impressive single statistic.

This process produces a defensible comparison without promising immunity from AI. It also keeps the decision current: when BLS updates wages or projections, or when your state changes licensing rules, you can replace the affected evidence without rebuilding the entire analysis.
