Compare the security job, evidence and operating model—not the word “AI.” An AI-powered product may improve detection or triage, while a conventional product may provide stronger prevention, predictable controls or easier validation. The right choice depends on the assets you must protect, the data each tool can see, the actions it can take, and whether your team can operate it safely.
Use the framework below to compare candidates against the same threats, systems, time period and success measures. Treat vendor AI claims as hypotheses to verify, and keep patching, exposure reduction, multifactor authentication and recovery controls in place regardless of which software you select.
Start with the security outcome you need
“AI security tool” and “traditional cybersecurity software” are broad marketing categories. They do not tell you whether a product prevents malware, detects suspicious behavior, investigates incidents, isolates a device or restores a system. Define the job first, then assess how the product performs it.
The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) describes endpoint detection and response (EDR) as combining endpoint and network event data to help detect malicious activity. Endpoint protection platforms (EPPs) with EDR modules can prevent file-based malware and support detection, investigation and remediation. Extended detection and response (XDR) broadens visibility by integrating endpoints with cloud, email and other security systems. These capabilities can exist in products marketed as either AI-enabled or conventional, so compare the functions directly:

| Security job | Questions to ask every candidate |
|---|---|
| Prevention | Which files, processes, applications, identities or connections can be blocked? Is blocking automatic, policy-based or analyst-approved? What happens when the service is unavailable? |
| Detection | What events and data sources are analyzed? Which detections are rules, signatures, behavior models or other methods? How quickly are alerts produced? |
| Investigation | Can analysts reconstruct a timeline, query historical data, pivot between users and devices, and preserve evidence for later review? |
| Containment and response | Can the product isolate a host, disable an account, stop a process, block a domain or quarantine a file? Which actions require approval? |
| Remediation and recovery | Does it remove persistence, restore settings, identify affected systems and document what changed? What must be done in another system? |
For ransomware resilience, CISA recommends application allowlisting and/or EDR, along with keeping antivirus and anti-malware software and signatures updated. That guidance treats layered controls as complementary rather than presenting an AI label as a replacement for established protection.
CISA’s #StopRansomware Guide explains these recommendations.
Map coverage and telemetry before comparing detection claims
A detection engine cannot analyze data it never receives. Make an inventory of the assets and signals that matter to your threat model, then verify the exact coverage of each candidate. “Supported” may mean a native sensor, an integration that needs a separate license, or a connector that you must build and maintain.

| Data source | Verification questions | Typical gap to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Endpoints and servers | Which operating-system versions are supported? Is coverage available for laptops, servers, virtual machines and disconnected devices? What telemetry remains when the agent is offline? | Server or legacy-system coverage may require a different agent or may be excluded. |
| Network | Does the product ingest network events directly, through sensors, or from another platform? Can it correlate network and endpoint activity? | Network visibility may be limited to selected traffic or require separate infrastructure. |
| Cloud workloads | Which cloud services, accounts, containers and identities are covered? Are logs collected continuously or only on demand? | Coverage can vary by cloud service and region, even within one provider. |
| Email and collaboration | Can the tool inspect messages, links, attachments and account behavior? Is protection inline or retrospective? | An endpoint product may not see the original phishing message or cloud-only activity. |
| Identity | Can events be tied to users, service accounts, privileges and authentication context? Are multifactor and conditional-access signals available? | Identity correlation may depend on a separate directory or access product. |
| Applications and devices | Can you create allowlists, block unauthorized software and identify unmanaged assets? | Inventory and application control may be separate modules. |
CISA’s capability descriptions distinguish the narrower endpoint focus of EDR from the cross-domain integration expected of XDR. Read the definitions in the Security Capabilities Catalog and CDM Technical Capabilities, Volume 2, then test whether a candidate actually covers your environment.
Do not equate anomaly detection with artificial intelligence
CISA defines anomalous event detection as finding observations that differ from normal behavior and may indicate an incident or behavioral change. That functional definition does not say that every anomaly detector uses machine learning or any other AI technique. A product may use statistical thresholds, rules, signatures, supervised models, unsupervised models or a combination.

- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
- The precise task: classification, prioritization, summarization, behavioral detection, investigation assistance or automated response.
- The data used to build and operate the model, including whether customer data is retained or used to improve a shared service.
- How the system handles missing, poisoned, manipulated or unusual data.
- How often models, rules and detection content change, and how changes are tested and rolled back.
- What explanation, supporting events or confidence information an analyst receives.
- How a human can approve, override or audit a recommendation.
Require a demonstration with representative events rather than a generic claim that the product is “AI-powered.” Record which results were measured, which were illustrative, and which came from a vendor assertion.
Separate measured evidence from marketing claims
No directly comparable published statistic showing that AI-powered security software is categorically more effective than traditional software was established in the available CISA material. Do not fill that gap with an unsourced accuracy percentage or a universal ranking. Instead, request evidence that matches your risks.
Evidence to request
- Detection and prevention results for the operating systems, applications and attack techniques relevant to your organization.
- Test conditions: data set, duration, sensor configuration, exclusions, network access and whether analysts were involved.
- False-positive and false-negative information, including how unknown or previously unseen activity was treated.
- Time-to-alert, time-to-investigate and time-to-contain measurements from a controlled pilot.
- Resource impact on endpoints, servers and network links under normal and peak loads.
- Independent evaluations or reproducible customer test results, with their dates and limitations.
Ask for raw event records and an explanation of how each result was calculated. A high alert count is not the same as useful detection, and an automated action is not necessarily a successful response.
Use a controlled, scenario-based comparison
Comparing tools under different conditions produces an attractive but unreliable result. Use the same assets, attack scenarios, time window, policies and success criteria for every candidate.
- Define the threat model. List the threats that matter to your organization, such as ransomware, credential theft, supply-chain compromise, insider misuse or cloud-account takeover. Identify business-critical systems and acceptable response times.
- Document the baseline. Record current antivirus or EPP policies, EDR or XDR coverage, logging, patch status, identity controls, analyst procedures and known visibility gaps.
- Choose representative scenarios. Include benign administrative activity, routine software updates and unusual but legitimate behavior so that nuisance alerts are visible alongside malicious cases.
- Standardize configuration. Give each candidate equivalent telemetry, retention, exclusions, permissions and analyst access. Document every setting that could affect results.
- Measure outcomes. Track prevention, detection, investigation time, containment time, remediation completeness, false positives, endpoint performance and analyst effort.
- Review failures. For every missed or incorrect alert, determine whether the cause was absent telemetry, a disabled control, an integration problem, a model limitation or an analyst workflow issue.
- Make uncertainty explicit. Label each result as measured in your pilot, independently tested, vendor-reported or not established. Do not generalize a short pilot beyond its conditions.
Assess response automation and human control
Automation can reduce response time, but it also increases the consequence of a bad decision. CISA describes security orchestration, automation and response (SOAR) as defining, prioritizing and automating incident response. Automation is a capability to evaluate, not proof that a product uses AI.

- The trigger and the evidence required.
- Whether the action is immediate, queued for approval or advisory only.
- Who can authorize, cancel or reverse it.
- What happens if the target is a domain controller, production server, shared account or safety-critical system.
- Whether the action and its rationale are logged immutably.
- How the organization rehearses the action and restores service after an error.
A useful design often combines low-risk automatic actions, such as quarantining a known malicious file, with approval gates for disruptive actions, such as isolating a production host or disabling a privileged account.
Evaluate AI-specific security and privacy risks
An AI feature adds another system to secure. CISA’s artificial-intelligence roadmap calls for addressing cybersecurity and resilience risks created by AI adoption and for adapting secure-by-design practices. Its international procurement guidance likewise encourages organizations to choose secure-by-design digital products and services.

- Isolation between customers and controls preventing one tenant’s data from influencing another.
- Protection against prompt injection, data poisoning, evasion, model extraction and unauthorized model changes.
- Secure software-development practices, vulnerability disclosure and incident notification.
- Access controls for model administration, training data and response permissions.
- Fallback behavior when the model, cloud service or connectivity is unavailable.
- Audit records that show the input, recommendation, user decision and resulting action.
Do not assume that a conventional product is automatically safer or that an AI-enabled product is automatically riskier. Require evidence about the architecture and controls of the specific service.
Check operational fit, not just technical capability
A technically impressive platform can fail if your team cannot deploy, tune and investigate it. Compare the work required before purchase and during steady-state operation.
| Operational area | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Deployment | Agent rollout, network changes, cloud permissions, legacy-system support, update process and rollback plan. |
| Analyst workflow | Alert grouping, search, timelines, case management, evidence export, escalation and integration with ticketing or identity systems. |
| Tuning | How exclusions, policies and detection thresholds are changed, tested, approved and audited. |
| Staffing and skills | Hours needed for monitoring, investigation, engineering, threat hunting and incident response; training and certification requirements. |
| Availability | Local versus cloud dependencies, offline behavior, service-level commitments, maintenance windows and disaster-recovery arrangements. |
| Data lifecycle | Retention periods, storage location, export formats, legal holds and deletion at contract end. |
Ask the supplier to perform the complete workflow with your administrators: onboard an asset, investigate an alert, obtain approval, contain a system, reverse the action and export the record. The exercise reveals integration and staffing demands that a feature list hides.

Keep foundational controls in the comparison
Security software is one layer of a risk-management program. CISA’s internet-exposure guidance recommends routine assessment and monitoring, patching, replacing unsupported systems and using multifactor authentication (MFA) where possible for exposed assets. Those controls remain necessary when a tool has advanced analytics.
Include the following checks in the same decision:
- Are internet-facing services inventoried and scanned regularly?
- Are critical patches installed within a defined, measured time?
- Have unsupported operating systems and appliances been removed or isolated?
- Is MFA enabled for remote access, administrators and other exposed accounts?
- Are backups protected from alteration and tested for restoration?
- Can the organization identify, contain, eradicate and recover from an incident?
Use the Internet Exposure Reduction Guidance for exposure-management questions. Organize the overall program around the Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond and Recover goals in CISA’s Cybersecurity Performance Goals FAQ.

Score every candidate against weighted criteria agreed by security, IT, privacy, legal and business owners. A simple 0–3 scale works: 0 means absent, 1 partly meets the need, 2 meets it with conditions, and 3 is demonstrated in your environment. Keep “not stated” separate from a zero; missing evidence is a procurement risk, not proof that the capability does not exist.
| Scorecard category | Evidence required before selection |
|---|---|
| Coverage | Supported assets, data sources, integrations, licensing boundaries and known blind spots. |
| Security outcomes | Prevention, detection, investigation, response and remediation results for agreed scenarios. |
| Detection quality | Test conditions, false-positive and false-negative data, alert context and update governance. |
| AI transparency | Named AI functions, data handling, human review, model-change process and fallback behavior. |
| Response safety | Permissions, approval gates, reversibility, audit trails and recovery procedures. |
| Operations | Deployment effort, analyst workload, tuning process, skills and support model. |
| Resilience and trust | Secure-development evidence, vulnerability handling, service continuity, privacy terms and exit plan. |
| Program fit | How the product complements patching, MFA, exposure management, backups and the incident-response plan. |
Have at least two reviewers independently score the evidence, then resolve differences with documented proof. Re-score after a pilot; a product that looks strong in a demonstration but requires unplanned modules or manual work should not retain its initial score.

Counting alerts as effectiveness
Why it fails: More alerts can increase workload without improving protection.
Fix: Measure validated incidents, analyst time, false positives and containment results together.
Assuming anomaly detection is self-explanatory
Why it fails: Anomaly methods differ, and unusual behavior can be legitimate.
Fix: Ask what baseline, data, threshold and explanation support each alert.
Ignoring integration and permissions
Why it fails: A product cannot correlate or respond without the required logs and authority.
Fix: Test onboarding, data flow, approval and rollback in a pilot with production-like systems.
Letting software substitute for fundamentals
Why it fails: Unpatched, unsupported or internet-exposed systems remain vulnerable regardless of analytics.
Recommended Free Tools
Fix: Make patching, exposure reduction, MFA and tested recovery explicit procurement gates.
A practical decision rule
Select the candidate that demonstrably covers your critical assets, produces evidence your team can act on, automates only within acceptable risk, and fits the organization’s operating capacity. If an AI feature cannot be explained, measured or governed, treat it as unproven and value the underlying control—not the label. Retain conventional prevention and policy controls where they perform predictably, and add analytics or automation where your threat model and staff can support them.
