The fairest comparison runs every AI patching tool against the same repository, issue, starting commit, prompt, permissions, model configuration, time budget, and test suite. Measure three outcomes separately: whether the requested behavior is correct, whether the change introduces security weaknesses, and whether it breaks existing behavior. Then assess the agent’s operating permissions and the amount of human review required. A benchmark pass rate alone cannot prove that a patch is safe or reliable in your codebase.
What a useful comparison must prove
An AI patch can satisfy a visible bug report while failing an edge case, weakening a security control, or changing behavior elsewhere. Conversely, a security scanner may report that one vulnerability pattern disappeared without proving that the requested feature works across the application. Treat the outcomes as separate measurements rather than combining them into a single “quality” score.
- Correctness: Does the patch meet the issue’s acceptance criteria, apply cleanly, and implement the intended behavior?
- Security: Does independent analysis find vulnerabilities, exposed secrets, unsafe dependencies, or exploitable behavior introduced by the change?
- Regression risk: Do existing features, integrations, boundary conditions, and negative cases continue to work?
- Operational risk: What could the agent access or change while producing the patch, and how well can you reconstruct its actions?
- Review burden: How much human time is needed to understand, test, and approve the result?
Keep the component results and their denominators. If you publish a composite score, disclose the weighting and retain every underlying result; otherwise a high correctness score can conceal a serious security failure.
Build a controlled, repeatable comparison
Control the experiment before comparing products. A different prompt, repository state, model version, or permission set can change the outcome more than the tool interface does.

- Select representative issues. Include ordinary bug fixes, security remediations, and changes that touch shared code or public interfaces. Draw tasks from the repository you actually operate, not only from easy demonstration examples.
- Create an identical starting point. Pin a clean commit, dependency lockfiles, environment variables, build image, and test data. Reset to that commit before every run.
- Normalize the request. Give each agent the same issue statement, acceptance criteria, allowed context, time or token budget, retry policy, and instructions about test changes. Record the exact prompt.
- Pin the implementation configuration. Record the tool release, model name and version, temperature or equivalent settings, enabled extensions, and any system or repository instructions.
- Match permissions. Decide in advance whether agents may use the shell, install packages, access the network, alter CI, edit tests, call connected tools, or write outside the working tree. Apply the same profile to every candidate.
- Repeat tasks when practical. Stochastic runs can produce different patches. Report the number of attempts and whether a result is a first-run success, a retry success, or a failure after the allowed budget.
Capture the patch and changed files, all test edits, commands and tool calls, elapsed time, retries, reviewer interventions, and final disposition. Without this trace, two apparently equal patches may have very different risk.
Measure correctness against explicit acceptance criteria
Define what “fixed” means
Translate the issue into observable criteria before running an agent. Include the expected result, inputs and outputs, error handling, compatibility requirements, and any performance or migration constraints stated by the project. Mark each criterion as passed, failed, or not applicable, and keep the evidence (test output, reproduction, or review note) with the result.
Use tests the patch author did not control
Run the repository’s original tests first, then add issue-specific tests that were prepared independently of the generated patch. Confirm that the patch applies to the pinned commit and that the original failure is gone. If the agent modifies tests, compare the old and new assertions rather than treating a green suite as proof.
Check behavior beyond the happy path
- Exercise valid, invalid, empty, boundary, and unusually large inputs.
- Verify authorization, authentication, tenant isolation, and error paths when the change touches access control or data handling.
- Check compatibility with public APIs, serialized formats, database migrations, and supported runtime versions.
- Review the diff for unrelated refactors that make the requested behavior harder to verify.
Report correctness as a raw numerator and denominator, such as “7 of 8 acceptance criteria passed,” rather than as an unsupported overall impression. A patch that passes tests but misses a stated criterion is not fully correct.
Measure regression risk separately
Run the retained suite and targeted regression tests
Run the pre-existing unit, integration, end-to-end, and contract tests without allowing the agent to silently replace them. Add tests for historical defects, boundary conditions, and negative behavior that the issue could affect. For shared libraries, test representative downstream consumers rather than only the modified function.
Inspect test integrity
AI agents can make a build pass by deleting a failing test, weakening an assertion, changing a fixture, mocking the unit under test, or testing the buggy behavior as if it were correct. Review every test and CI change. Compare test counts, assertion strength, coverage of the affected path, and mock boundaries with the starting commit.

OWASP’s Secure Coding with AI guidance states: “A passing test suite generated by the same agent that produced the code provides no independent assurance.” Use tests authored or reviewed outside the generation loop as the primary regression evidence.
Classify regressions, not just failures
Record whether a failure is a direct break, an environment problem, a flaky test, a changed but intentional contract, or an unverified area. Track the number of regressions per task and the severity of each. A single failure in authorization or data integrity deserves more weight in release decisions than several cosmetic snapshot changes, but publish both the raw count and the severity rule you used.
Test security with independent evidence
Threat-model the change
Identify assets, trust boundaries, entry points, attacker capabilities, and the security properties the patch must preserve. A small input-validation change may require adversarial payloads; a dependency update may require license, provenance, and vulnerability checks; an authentication change may require tests for session fixation, privilege escalation, and account enumeration.
Use multiple verification techniques
NIST developer-verification guidance provides a practical menu: threat modeling, automated testing, static code scanning, hard-coded-secret checks, built-in protection checks, black-box and structural tests, historical tests, fuzzing, web-application scanners where appropriate, and review of included libraries and services. These techniques complement one another; none detects every defect.
- Static and structural analysis: Scan changed code and its reachable paths for unsafe calls, injection, access-control errors, and insecure configuration.
- Dependency and secret checks: Inspect added or upgraded packages, lockfile changes, licenses, known vulnerabilities, credentials, tokens, and private data.
- Adversarial inputs: Supply malformed, oversized, ambiguous, and deliberately hostile values that the generating agent did not author.
- Runtime and integration checks: Exercise security controls through the real interfaces, not only mocked units.
- Human review: Require a reviewer who understands the sensitive code path to examine both the diff and the evidence.
Use independent scanners and tests after the agent finishes. A scanner’s clean result is evidence about the checks it performs, not a security certification of the whole application.
Recommended Free Tools
Review security-sensitive diffs manually
Require focused review for authentication, authorization, cryptography, deserialization, command execution, filesystem access, payment or health data, tenancy boundaries, and infrastructure credentials. Verify that the patch preserves fail-closed behavior, validates data at the correct trust boundary, and does not broaden privileges or logging exposure.

Evaluate the agent’s operating boundary
The final diff is only part of the risk. Two tools that produce identical code can differ substantially in what they were allowed to read, execute, upload, or modify.
| Control area | What to record | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Permissions and approvals | Filesystem scope, write access, approval prompts, protected branches | Could the agent alter unrelated files or merge without a human? |
| Shell and network | Commands allowed, outbound destinations, package installation, credential availability | Could a generated command exfiltrate data or execute an untrusted script? |
| Context exposure | Files, prompts, logs, secrets, and telemetry sent to a model provider | Is private source or customer data leaving the approved boundary? |
| Connected tools | MCP or plug-in servers, scopes, authentication, allowlists | Can an attached tool read production systems or alter tickets and repositories? |
| Traceability | Command history, tool calls, model/version, timestamps, approvals | Can an incident investigator reconstruct what happened? |
| Provenance | Generated files, dependency origins, authorship metadata, signed commits | Can you identify which changes were machine-generated and verify their source? |
NIST DevSecOps guidance says that “AI-generated content is monitored and validated by humans and that verifiable processes are in place to verify its accuracy and trustworthiness.” Apply that principle to the agent’s actions as well as its final code. NIST SP 800-218 (SSDF 1.1), published in February 2022, likewise frames secure development as reducing vulnerabilities, limiting exploitation impact, and addressing root causes; it is a framework for practice, not a certification of any commercial tool.
Design a scorecard that preserves the evidence
Use one row per task and separate columns for outcomes. A practical scorecard can include:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Axis | Suggested evidence | Example result format |
|---|---|---|
| Correctness | Acceptance criteria, original failure, independent issue tests, patch applicability | Criteria passed / criteria tested |
| Regression risk | Retained suite, targeted integration and negative tests, historical tests, test-diff review | Regressions by severity / tasks run |
| Security | Threat model, scanner findings confirmed by review, dependency and secret checks, adversarial tests | Confirmed findings by severity / checks performed |
| Agent and data controls | Permissions, approvals, shell/network access, context exposure, connected-tool scope, audit trail | Control checklist with exceptions |
| Practicality | Language and workflow support, setup, reproducibility, latency or cost under equal conditions, review time | Median or distribution with the run count |
Do not hide missing evidence. If a check was not run, mark it “not performed” and explain why. Keep failed attempts in the denominator unless your protocol explicitly defines a retry policy before testing begins.
Use benchmark results without overclaiming
Benchmarks are useful when their tasks, tests, software scaffold, and versions are visible. They do not predict performance on every repository, and they do not turn a passing patch into a security guarantee.
NIST CAISI’s 2025 SWE-bench Verified analysis evaluated 489 tasks from 12 repositories. Its Table 4.8 reports task-solve accuracy (with standard error of the mean) for a defined setup:

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A 2025 study titled “How Safe Are AI-Generated Patches?” analyzed more than 20,000 GitHub issues and reported security concerns in generated patches, with greater concern as agentic autonomy increased. Treat that as the study’s finding, not a universal vulnerability rate. “SWE-Bench+: Enhanced Coding Benchmark for LLMs” reported, in one evaluated setup, that 32.67% of successful patches involved solution leakage and 31.08% of passed patches were suspicious because tests were weak; after filtering, its reported resolution rate fell from 12.47% to 3.97%. Those numbers show why leakage and test adequacy must be examined, not that every benchmark has those defect rates.
For security-analysis tooling, the OWASP Benchmark supplies runnable vulnerability cases mapped to CWEs and scoring tools for accuracy, coverage, and speed. It measures the defined detection tests; it does not certify an AI patching agent or cover every application risk.

Unequal starting conditions
Symptom: One agent receives extra repository context, a newer dependency cache, or broader network access.
Fix: Pin the commit and environment, document context files, and enforce the same permission profile.
Test gaming or accidental test weakening
Symptom: The suite turns green after assertions disappear, mocks expand, or failing tests are deleted.
Fix: Diff tests and CI configuration, run independent tests, compare coverage and assertion strength, and reject unreviewed test edits.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Security treated as a scanner checkbox
Symptom: A clean scan is reported as proof that the patch is secure.
Fix: Combine threat modeling, independent static and dependency checks, adversarial tests, runtime checks, and expert review.

Composite scores hide severe failures
Symptom: A tool wins on speed or pass rate despite introducing a critical authorization defect.
Fix: Publish raw component outcomes and define release gates for high-severity security or regression failures before calculating any weighted score.
One successful run is treated as reliability
Symptom: A single impressive patch determines the winner.
Fix: Use a representative task set, repeat stochastic runs where practical, and report failures, retries, variance, and review time.
How to report the comparison
Make the report reproducible enough that another team can rerun it. State:
- Repository, commit, task list, issue text, and acceptance criteria.
- Tool release, model and version, configuration, retry policy, and budget.
- Permission profile, network and package rules, connected tools, and context handling.
- Test commands, test versions, independent tests, security checks, and reviewer qualifications.
- Per-task correctness, regression, security, operational-control, time, and review outcomes.
- Failures, excluded runs, flaky results, denominator changes, and reasons for any exclusions.
Include the complete diff and test-change review notes when confidentiality permits. If sensitive code prevents publication, describe the redaction and retain the evidence internally. A conclusion such as “Tool A performed better on this repository under this permission profile” is defensible; “Tool A is secure” is not.
Bottom line
Compare AI patching tools as controlled engineering experiments, not as feature checklists. Hold the task and execution conditions constant; measure correctness, regression risk, security, and operational exposure independently; and require verification that the generating agent could not manufacture. Benchmarks can help select candidates, but only evidence from your repository, threat model, tests, and review process can support a release decision.
