The most reliable way to compare AI companies is to compare the specific business segment, product, buyer and revenue mechanism—not an “AI company” label. A chip designer, a cloud platform, an enterprise software provider and a robot-autonomy vendor create value at different layers and require different evidence. Classify the offering first, then compare performance, deployment burden, economics and uncertainty within that layer.
Start with the three AI business layers
AI businesses generally fall into three analytical layers. They are not mutually exclusive: one company may sell equipment, cloud capacity, model access, applications and physical automation at the same time. Compare the relevant segment rather than forcing the whole company into one category.
| Layer | What is sold | Typical buyer | Useful evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Infrastructure | Accelerators, CPUs, servers, networking, data-center systems, cloud compute, platform services and model infrastructure | Cloud providers, laboratories, enterprises, governments and developers | Capacity, performance, availability, power and networking requirements, software ecosystem, utilization, customer concentration and segment revenue |
| Applications | Software or services that put AI into customer or employee workflows | Businesses, public-sector organizations, professionals and consumers | Task accuracy, speed, adoption, repeat usage, integration effort, security, reliability, pricing and cost to serve |
| Robotics and physical AI | Autonomy software combined with robots or vehicles, integration, engineering, manufacturing and deployment or service work | Factories, warehouses, infrastructure operators, defense and other site-based customers | Real-world task reliability, hardware compatibility, safety, uptime, maintenance, deployment cost, repeatability and human supervision |
NVIDIA’s FY2026 shareholder letter describes applications as the point where infrastructure becomes economic and social value. Alibaba’s cloud reporting combines infrastructure, platform and model services. Palladyne describes autonomy products spanning industrial robots and unmanned platforms. Those examples illustrate why a company can participate in several layers while still requiring segment-level analysis.

Before comparing technical specifications, write down the paying customer, the product delivered and the way money changes hands. Keep hardware sales, cloud consumption, model or API usage, software subscriptions, integration work and robotics deployment or service revenue in separate columns. A company-level revenue number is not automatically an AI revenue number.

| Question | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Who pays? | Cloud provider, enterprise department, developer, manufacturer, government or another intermediary | The buyer determines purchasing criteria, sales cycles, contract size and concentration risk. |
| What is delivered? | Chip, server, cloud capacity, model access, application workflow, robot, autonomy software or engineering service | Two companies described as AI vendors may sell entirely different units of value. |
| How is it priced? | One-time hardware sale, usage-based consumption, per-seat subscription, API call, project fee, lease, deployment fee or service contract | Pricing determines recurring revenue, utilization sensitivity and gross-margin behavior. |
| Where is the figure reported? | Company total, operating segment, product line, geography or customer cohort | Scope prevents a segment figure from being mistaken for total-company AI exposure. |
| What period does it cover? | Fiscal quarter, fiscal year, trailing period, annualized run rate or forecast | Historical results, annualized measures and forecasts are not interchangeable. |
Alibaba is a useful example of why this mapping is necessary. Its cloud business spans infrastructure, platform and model services, while a company release separately identifies AI-related products within cloud external revenue. A comparison should therefore label each figure as cloud revenue, AI-related product revenue or another defined measure instead of calling all of it “AI revenue.”
How to compare infrastructure companies
Infrastructure is the enabling layer: compute, memory, networking, software stacks and the cloud services that expose them. Compare infrastructure vendors on the conditions under which customers can obtain useful work, not on a single peak-performance number.
Performance and capacity
- Record the workload used for a performance claim: model training, inference, database processing or another task.
- Separate peak throughput from sustained throughput at the customer’s scale.
- Check memory capacity and bandwidth, interconnect performance, cluster size and scaling behavior.
- For cloud services, compare the available instance types, regional capacity and practical quota limits.
A faster component may not produce a faster system if memory, networking, software compatibility or supply constraints dominate. Ask whether the reported result applies to one accelerator, a server, a cluster or an entire cloud service.
Cost, availability and utilization
- Compare purchase price or hourly cloud rate with the amount of useful work delivered.
- Include electricity, cooling, facility construction, networking and operations in a total-cost estimate.
- Check delivery lead times, geographic availability and whether capacity is reserved, shared or subject to quota.
- Measure utilization: idle capacity can erase an attractive theoretical price.
Infrastructure economics are also affected by customer concentration. A vendor with a few very large buyers may report rapid growth while remaining exposed to changes in one customer’s capital plan.
Software ecosystem and interoperability
Hardware is only useful when developers can run the required frameworks, compilers, libraries and management tools. Compare the maturity of the software stack, migration effort from an incumbent platform, support for open standards and the ability to deploy on-premises or in multiple clouds. Treat ecosystem breadth as a switching-cost and execution question, not as proof that one platform is universally superior.

Infrastructure evidence to request
- Product specifications tied to a named model and version.
- Customer deployments or cloud consumption data, with the period and scope stated.
- Power, cooling and networking requirements for the intended configuration.
- Availability by region and expected capacity at the time of purchase.
- Revenue, backlog or utilization figures that identify the relevant segment.
How to compare AI application companies
Application vendors turn models and infrastructure into a workflow. The central question is not whether a model can generate an impressive demonstration, but whether the product completes a customer task accurately, reliably and at an acceptable cost.
Task quality, accuracy and speed
Define the task and the error that matters. A document-extraction product may be judged on field-level accuracy; a support assistant may be judged on resolved cases and escalation rates; a coding tool may be judged on accepted changes and review time. Record latency, throughput and availability under the customer’s real workload. Benchmark scores that do not match the intended task should not drive the decision.
Workflow fit and integration
- List the systems the product must connect to, such as identity, data stores, ticketing, finance or production software.
- Estimate configuration, data preparation, permissions and change-management work.
- Check whether deployment is cloud-only, on-premises, hybrid or available through more than one model.
- Determine how administrators monitor outputs, correct errors and roll back changes.
Veritone’s 2025 Form 10-K names application breadth, cognitive-processing accuracy and speed, cloud and on-premises deployment, ease of deployment and integration, scalability, reliability, security and cost as competitive factors. Those are issuer-stated criteria rather than an independent universal scorecard, but they provide a practical checklist for evaluating any application vendor.
Adoption, retention and unit economics
Look for paid customers, active users, repeat usage, renewal or retention measures and usage-based expansion where disclosed. Separate pilots from production deployments. A large user count can conceal low activity; a small number of customers can be economically attractive if usage is deep and recurring.
Model cost to serve as well as price. Inference, storage, human review, support and integration labor can rise with usage. A subscription that appears inexpensive at low volume may become costly when every employee or transaction invokes a model.

Security, reliability and governance
- Identify data-residency, access-control and audit requirements.
- Check uptime commitments and the process for handling model or data failures.
- Ask how sensitive information is isolated and whether customer data is used for training.
- Define human approval points for high-impact decisions.
Security and reliability are part of product performance because an inaccurate or unavailable system can create operational cost even when its benchmark accuracy is high.
How to compare robotics and physical-AI companies
Robotics combines software with hardware, physical environments, integration and ongoing service. A demonstration in a controlled setting is not evidence of reliable production operation.
Define the physical task
Specify the object, environment, speed, tolerance and consequence of failure. “Autonomous picking” could mean one known item in a structured bin or varied objects in a busy warehouse; those are different products. Record the range of lighting, surfaces, obstacles, payloads and weather the system is expected to handle.
Measure reliability and uptime in context
- Use task success rate, intervention frequency and recovery time for the actual site.
- Record uptime, charging or refueling requirements and planned maintenance.
- Include connectivity limits, sensor occlusion and degraded-operation behavior.
- Measure throughput after accounting for human handoffs, not just autonomous motion time.
Human oversight must be explicit. Determine who approves actions, who handles exceptions and how many operators are needed per robot or vehicle. A system that requires frequent intervention may still be valuable, but its labor model must be included in the comparison.
Hardware compatibility and deployment burden
Ask which robot or vehicle platforms are supported, whether the vendor supplies hardware, and what modifications are required. Integration may involve safety-rated controls, site mapping, network changes, fixtures, training and compliance reviews. Compare the time and engineering cost to reach production, not only the software license.

- Document spare parts, firmware updates, preventive maintenance and service response.
- Compare results across multiple sites or customers rather than one showcase installation.
Palladyne’s filing describes autonomy products for industrial robots and unmanned platforms, along with intended uses and strategy. Those descriptions establish the product scope; they do not by themselves establish independent production results or guaranteed adoption.
Use financial figures without mixing scopes
Put the fiscal period, currency, geography and reporting scope beside every number. Distinguish audited or reported historical results from management forecasts and annualized rates. Do not label total-company revenue as AI revenue unless the company makes that attribution.
| Company and measure | Reported figure | Correct interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA Corporation, FY2026 | $216 billion revenue; $130 billion operating income; $194 billion data-center revenue, up 68% year over year | Company-reported annual figures. Data-center revenue is a segment measure, not total AI-market revenue. |
| Alibaba Group, referenced March quarter in its 2026 release | RMB 41,626 million Cloud Intelligence Group revenue; external revenue growth of 40% | Period-specific company results for the cloud group and its external revenue; not a measure of all Alibaba AI revenue. |
| Alibaba Group, 2026 release | AI-related products were 30% of Cloud external revenue; annualized AI-related product revenue exceeded RMB 35.8 billion | The 30% share has a defined cloud-external-revenue denominator. RMB 35.8 billion is annualized, not audited full-year revenue. |
| Gartner ranking cited by Alibaba’s FY2025 annual report | Fourth worldwide and first in Asia Pacific by 2024 IaaS revenue | This is a Gartner 2025 ranking for 2024 IaaS revenue, as cited by Alibaba. It is not an all-cloud or AI-market ranking. |
Percentages are comparable only when the numerator and denominator use compatible definitions. A cloud segment’s AI-product share cannot be directly compared with another company’s total-company AI estimate unless both scopes are aligned.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Separate reported evidence, company claims and forecasts
Company filings and releases are authoritative for what the issuer reports about its own business, but they are not neutral proof that a product is best. Label statements according to their status:
- Historical result: a reported figure for a completed period.
- Company-described capability: a product feature or competitive claim stated by the issuer.
- Customer evidence: a named deployment, usage measure or contract described with scope and date.
- Forecast or intended use: management’s expectation, plan or strategy, which may not occur.
- Annualized measure: a run rate derived from a period or current pace, not realized full-year revenue.
Alibaba CEO Eddie Wu said, “This quarter, we achieved accelerated breakthroughs across models, cloud infrastructure, and applications.” That is management commentary and should be read as such. Palladyne’s filing cautions that statements about plans and strategy involve uncertainty. Keep those statements separate from realized operating results.

A repeatable comparison worksheet
Use the following sequence for any two or more companies. Complete it separately for each segment when a company spans layers.
- Name the layer: infrastructure, application or robotics. If the product crosses layers, identify the component being compared.
- Identify the payer: record the buyer, buying department and whether another provider is the immediate customer.
- Define the unit of sale: hardware unit, cloud instance-hour, API call, seat, workflow, robot, project or service contract.
- Capture the revenue line: write the exact segment or product label, reporting period, currency and geography.
- Specify the operating task: state the workload, workflow or physical task and the failure that matters.
- Collect like-for-like performance evidence: use the same scale, latency target, reliability definition and deployment conditions where possible.
- Price the complete deployment: include compute, software, integration, labor, power, maintenance, safety and switching costs.
- Assess concentration and repeatability: check customer concentration, number of production sites, renewal or repeat usage and dependence on one platform.
- Label uncertainty: mark every item as reported result, issuer claim, customer evidence, annualized figure or forecast.
- Write a conditional conclusion: state which offering fits the defined task and assumptions, rather than naming a universal winner.
Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them
Using one “AI score” across all companies
Correct it by scoring within the layer. Infrastructure needs capacity, cost and ecosystem measures; applications need workflow outcomes and adoption; robotics needs physical reliability, safety and service economics.
Treating total revenue as AI revenue
Correct it by recording the segment, denominator and period. If attribution is not disclosed, say that AI-specific revenue is not stated rather than estimating it.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Comparing a forecast with a historical result
Correct it by labeling forecasts and annualized rates directly in the table or sentence. Never present an expected revenue milestone as realized annual revenue.
Equating a demonstration with production capability
Correct it by asking for deployment count, intervention rate, uptime, maintenance requirements and results across sites. For robotics especially, include the human role and physical variability.
Ignoring deployment and integration cost
Correct it by pricing data preparation, connectors, engineering, operator training, safety work, support and ongoing model or firmware changes.
Comparing technical claims under different conditions
Correct it by documenting model or product version, workload, hardware, scale, latency target, data set, geography and date. If conditions cannot be aligned, present the claims as context rather than a head-to-head result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFinal decision checklist
- Have you identified the exact layer and segment?
- Do you know who pays and what unit is purchased?
- Is each revenue figure scoped by period, currency, geography and attribution?
- Are performance measures tied to the reader’s actual workload or physical task?
- Have you included deployment, integration, security, reliability and total cost?
- For robotics, have you evaluated safety, maintenance, uptime and human supervision?
- Are issuer claims, customer evidence, historical results, annualized rates and forecasts clearly separated?
- Have you avoided ranking companies when the underlying measures are not comparable?
The best comparison is therefore conditional: this offering, for this buyer, on this workload, at this deployment scale and cost, supported by evidence of this quality. That method remains useful whether the companies sell chips, cloud capacity, applications, autonomous robots or several of those products together.
