The most reliable way to compare AI chatbots on privacy is to compare each control separately—not to treat a single “private” setting as a guarantee. Check whether chats can be used for model training, whether they remain in history, how deletion works, what temporary modes retain, whether memory is separate, who can review content, what feedback does, and what happens to connected apps and uploads. The answer also changes with the account: consumer, school, business, Enterprise, and API products can have different terms.
What a privacy comparison should measure
Chatbot settings often use similar words for different actions. “Turn off training,” “delete history,” “temporary chat,” and “turn off memory” are separate controls with different effects. A useful comparison records the behavior of each setting, its exceptions, and the account or product surface where it applies.
Training use
A training control determines whether new conversations may be used to improve or train models. It normally does not erase existing history, remove a conversation from your account, or prevent every form of processing. Providers may still process content for security, abuse prevention, legal compliance, support, or service operation. Some providers also describe feedback or safety investigations as exceptions.

History is the copy you can see in the product or account. Deleting a chat changes that account view and starts the provider’s deletion process; it is not necessarily the same as removing backups, de-identified material, safety records, feedback records, or data already incorporated into a model.

Temporary, incognito, or activity-off modes
These modes usually prevent a chat from appearing in ordinary history and may exclude it from model improvement. They still can retain a short-lived copy for safety, abuse prevention, response generation, feedback handling, or other service operations. Read the stated period and exceptions instead of assuming “temporary” means “never stored.”
Memory and personalization
Memory stores facts or preferences for use in later conversations. It is distinct from both chat history and training. Turning memory off does not necessarily delete facts already saved, and it does not always remove limited context used for safety. Check the memory-management screen separately from the training switch.
Human review and safety processing
Authorized employees, contractors, or service providers may review limited content for abuse investigations, support, legal requests, quality work, or safety classification. A training opt-out is therefore not a promise that no person or automated safety system can process a chat.

Feedback, uploads, and connected apps
Submitting a thumbs-up, thumbs-down, report, or written comment can attach the related conversation to a separate review or improvement workflow. Files, browser or workspace connectors, device signals, location, audio, live video, and screen sharing can introduce additional data flows. The connected service may apply its own terms as well as the chatbot provider’s terms.

How each service’s controls work
ChatGPT
In a consumer ChatGPT account, open the data controls and switch off Improve the model for everyone to prevent new conversations and tasks from being used to train OpenAI models. The switch does not delete saved conversations or hide them from your history. Delete those chats separately if you no longer want them in the account.
Use Temporary Chat when you want a conversation excluded from history, memory creation or updates, and model improvement while it remains temporary. OpenAI says it may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety. If you save that conversation, it becomes an ordinary chat. A thumbs-up, thumbs-down, or other feedback can create a separate exception: OpenAI says the associated conversation may be used for training even after the general opt-out.

Disabling it does not automatically remove saved memories, and OpenAI notes that limited safety-relevant context can still be used in rare high-risk situations. Consumer chats can receive limited authorized access for safety incidents, support, legal matters, or model improvement when the user has not opted out. OpenAI describes different defaults for managed workspaces and API data, so do not apply consumer settings to an organization account without checking its policy.
Claude
Anthropic’s consumer training guidance covers Claude Free, Pro, and Max accounts, including those accounts’ Claude Code use. It says chats and coding sessions may be used to improve models when the user permits improvement, when a session is flagged for safety review, or when the user explicitly opts in through another route. Turn on Incognito for a chat that should not be used to improve Claude, even if model improvement is otherwise enabled.
Turning the improvement setting off excludes previous and new chats from future training, but it cannot remove material from a training run already in progress or from models that have already been trained. If you submit feedback, Anthropic says the related conversation may be retained for up to five years and used for improvement, research, or service analysis as permitted.

Anthropic describes more than one retention path. Chats or coding sessions that the user allows for improvement may be retained in de-identified form for up to five years in model-training pipelines. A session flagged as a Usage Policy violation may have inputs and outputs retained for up to two years, while safety-classification scores may be retained for up to seven years. Those are conditional periods, not a claim that every Claude chat is stored for those lengths.

Google’s Keep Activity control governs whether future chats appear in Gemini Apps Activity and may be used to improve services. Turning it off does not mean immediate deletion: Google says chats remain for 72 hours so Gemini can respond, handle feedback, and protect Google, users, and the public. Temporary Chats also remain for 72 hours and are not used to train Google’s AI models.
When Keep Activity is on, Google says activity may improve services, including training generative models. The default auto-delete period is 18 months, with choices of 3 months, 36 months, or indefinite retention. Google also says some data reviewed by service providers is disconnected from the Google account and retained for up to three years; deleting Gemini activity does not delete that reviewed copy.
Gemini’s privacy surface extends beyond the activity switch. Connected apps, device and location signals, audio, Live video, screen sharing, and personalization can each affect what data is processed. Google warns: “Please don’t enter confidential information that you wouldn’t want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve our services, including machine-learning technologies.” Work or school accounts can have different terms from personal accounts.
Retention periods need their condition attached
A number without its trigger is misleading. These provider-stated durations describe different data types and situations:

These are policy durations stated by the providers, not an independent cross-provider statistic. A deletion request, safety copy, feedback record, de-identified training data, and material already reviewed by a person can follow different schedules.
Consumer, work, school, and API accounts are not interchangeable
Identify the account before comparing a setting. A personal subscription and a business workspace may display similar controls while applying different contractual terms, administrator retention rules, or training defaults.
- ChatGPT: OpenAI says managed business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare, and API data are not used to improve models by default, subject to workspace settings and policies. Confirm the administrator’s configuration and your organization’s data-processing terms.
- Claude: The cited consumer training guidance applies to Free, Pro, and Max and points commercial users to separate terms. Do not infer that a commercial workspace follows the consumer retention language.
- Gemini: Google says work or school accounts may have different handling terms. An administrator may control activity, connected services, and retention in ways unavailable to a personal account.
For regulated, confidential, or customer data, the organization should approve the exact product, workspace configuration, connectors, retention policy, and incident process. A personal account is not an acceptable substitute merely because it has a temporary mode.

- Identify the product surface. Record the provider, app or API, plan, account type, country or region, and whether an administrator manages it. Note whether you are using a web app, mobile app, coding tool, connector, or embedded assistant.
- Locate the training control. Write down the exact label, what future data it covers, and whether it affects existing chats. Check for exceptions involving feedback, safety flags, legal requests, or service operation.
- Test history separately. Determine whether a new chat appears in history, whether deleting it removes it from the visible account, and what the provider says about backups, de-identification, security copies, or legal retention.
- Inspect temporary or incognito behavior. Verify whether the mode suppresses history, memory, and training. Record the stated retention window and whether saving, exporting, sharing, or feedback converts the chat to another workflow.
- Review memory and personalization. Open the memory-management screen, list saved items, delete any you do not need, and check whether personalization uses other account activity. Do not assume the training switch controls these features.
- Read human-review language. Look for safety review, abuse detection, support access, service providers, quality analysis, and legal disclosures. Ask whether reviewers see raw content, de-identified content, metadata, or feedback-linked conversations.
- Audit feedback behavior. Before rating an answer or reporting a problem, check whether the conversation will be retained or used for improvement. Treat feedback as a new data-sharing decision.
- Inventory inputs and connectors. List uploaded files, images, code repositories, calendars, email, cloud drives, browser tools, location, microphone, camera, Live video, screen sharing, and third-party actions. Check both the chatbot policy and the connected service’s policy.
- Capture the evidence date. Save the provider help-page URL and the date you checked it. Settings and labels change, and a later product update can invalidate an old screenshot.
- Apply a data-minimization rule. Remove names, account numbers, secrets, customer records, private keys, and unnecessary context. If the remaining information would still be harmful if reviewed, do not enter it without organizational approval.
Safety and confidentiality limits
Privacy controls do not make generated answers accurate, harmless, or confidential. Google warns that Gemini can produce inaccurate or offensive information and can make mistakes while taking actions, including unexpectedly sharing data with third parties. A setting that reduces model-improvement use does not prevent a wrong answer, a malicious prompt, a compromised connector, or an accidental disclosure in the output.
OpenAI describes encryption in transit and at rest and certifications or assessments for specified products, including business and API scopes, on its security and privacy page. Those statements have product boundaries; they should not be read as identical contractual protection for every consumer account.

For sensitive work, separate three questions: Can the provider use this input to improve a model? Can the provider retain or review it for safety or service operation? and Can the output or a connected action expose it elsewhere? A “no” to the first question does not answer the other two.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“Training off means the chat is private.”
Correction: turn off training, then separately delete history, review memory, inspect temporary-mode retention, and read safety and feedback exceptions.
“Temporary means instantly deleted.”
Correction: check the provider’s stated safety or service window. OpenAI describes up to 30 days for a Temporary Chat copy; Google describes 72 hours for Gemini Temporary Chats and chats made with Keep Activity off.
“Deleting activity removes every copy.”
Correction: ask whether de-identified, reviewed, backup, legal, safety, or feedback records follow another schedule. Google specifically notes that some service-provider-reviewed data can remain for up to three years after account activity is deleted.
“Memory off removes what the chatbot knows.”
Correction: inspect and delete saved memories, clear ordinary history where needed, and check separate personalization or connected-service activity.
“A consumer setting applies to my company workspace.”
Correction: verify the exact business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare, commercial, or API terms and the administrator’s settings. The consumer pages for these providers do not establish identical behavior for managed products.
“A thumbs-down is harmless.”
Correction: treat feedback as a possible new retention and improvement path. Anthropic says feedback-linked conversations may be retained for up to five years; OpenAI and Google also describe feedback exceptions.

Pre-use checklist for sensitive material
- Confirm whether the account is personal, work, school, Enterprise, commercial, or API.
- Read the current training or activity label and its exceptions.
- Decide whether the conversation must stay out of history and memory.
- Check temporary or incognito retention rather than assuming zero storage.
- Review and delete saved memories that are not required.
- Understand human-review, safety, legal, and abuse-prevention access.
- Do not submit feedback containing confidential context unless approved.
- Disconnect unnecessary apps and revoke unused file, device, location, camera, microphone, or screen permissions.
- Remove secrets and identifying details from prompts and uploads.
- Recheck the provider’s help page and your organization’s policy whenever the product, plan, or account changes.
Bottom line
Compare AI chatbots control by control and condition by condition. ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini Apps each provide ways to reduce model-improvement use, but each also describes safety, feedback, service-operation, retention, or connected-app exceptions. The meaningful decision is whether a specific account and configuration meet your data policy—not which service carries a blanket “private” label.
