Calculate both figures over the identical holding period. Price return measures only the change in the quoted share price. Total return adds dividends or other investment income, using the dividend convention stated by the data source—cash received or dividends assumed to be reinvested.

For a simple holding with no other cash flows, divide the price change by the starting price for price return. For dividend-inclusive total return, add per-share dividends to the price change before dividing by the starting price. Then check dates, currency, reinvestment treatment, fees and taxes before deciding what the difference means.

Price return and total return answer different questions

A stock can have a modest price change while still producing meaningful income for its owner. Looking at the share-price chart alone therefore does not always describe the investor’s economic result. Price return isolates what happened to the quoted price. Total return asks what happened to the value of the investment after adding distributions such as dividends.

Measure What it includes What it is useful for
Price return Change from the starting share price to the ending share price Judging price movement, chart performance, or the price component of an index
Total return Price change plus dividends or other investment income; the source may assume cash or reinvestment Comparing the investment’s overall pre-expense performance with a benchmark that uses the same convention

FINRA summarizes the concept as “Total return = Gain or loss in value + Investment earnings” in its investor-education material. A total-return figure is not automatically the amount that arrived in your account: a published series can reinvest distributions, while your account may have withheld taxes, charged costs or paid the dividend in cash.

If a stock paid no dividend or other distribution during the period, the two percentages are the same before costs. When income exists, the difference between them is the income component and, in a reinvested series, the effect of putting that income back to work.

Set up a like-for-like comparison

Most misleading comparisons use two numbers that look similar but were calculated on different bases. Gather the inputs below before doing any arithmetic.

1. Use the same security

Confirm that both figures refer to the same company, share class and listing. A stock’s price return should not be compared with a total-return series for a different class, fund or index. For an index, read the methodology name carefully: a price index and its total-return counterpart are separate series.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Match the start and end dates

Write down the exact start date, end date and price observation used at each endpoint. Decide whether the source uses a closing price, an adjusted value or another specified observation. A one-day mismatch can include or exclude a dividend or a large price move. If two returns cover different lengths of time, they describe different holding periods and should not be presented as a direct contest.

3. Identify the income convention

List every dividend or distribution per share paid during the period. Then determine whether the reported total return treats it as cash or assumes reinvestment. A cash-dividend calculation adds the distributions once. A reinvested series also reflects the additional shares or index units purchased and their subsequent movement.

4. Keep the currency and measurement basis consistent

Use the same currency for the starting price, ending price and distributions. Confirm that both figures are either before or after the same kinds of adjustments. If one number is a local-currency return and the other includes a currency conversion, the difference may reflect the measurement basis rather than the stock’s performance.

5. Separate market return from personal costs

Mark each figure as before or after fees and taxes. FINRA’s example explicitly notes that commissions and taxes can change an investor’s actual outcome. A benchmark return normally describes the benchmark methodology, not the charges or tax position in your brokerage account.

Price return (%) = (Ending share price − Starting share price) ÷ Starting share price × 100

The starting price is the denominator because it represents the capital initially exposed to the investment. For example, if the ending price is above the starting price, the result is positive; if it is below, the result is negative. This calculation deliberately ignores dividends. That is a feature when the question is specifically how the quoted price moved, not a claim that the shareholder received no economic benefit.

Keep the unrounded prices through the calculation and round only the displayed result. Rounding each input first can create a small difference when you reconcile the result with a data provider.

Calculate dividend-inclusive total return

When dividends are received in cash and there are no other cash flows, add the per-share dividends to the price change:

Dividend-inclusive total return (%) = (Ending share price − Starting share price + Dividends received per share) ÷ Starting share price × 100

If there were several payments, use their total per-share amount. This expression assumes the dividend is not reinvested and that the comparison is before fees and taxes. It answers a practical question such as, “How much value came from the price change plus the cash distributions?”

Total return can still be negative. A sufficiently large fall in the share price can outweigh all dividends received. Conversely, a stock whose price is unchanged can have a positive total return if it paid income during the period. Neither result is a promise about future performance; market-linked investments can lose value.

FINRA’s worked example: $30 purchase, $35 sale and a $1 dividend

FINRA’s investor-education example describes buying a stock for $30 a share and selling it for $35. It says the return is a $5-per-share gain before subtracting commissions or other fees. If the stock paid a $1-per-share dividend while it was owned, the total return was a $6-per-share gain before expenses.

Item Calculation Result
Starting price Purchase price $30 per share
Ending price Sale price $35 per share
Price gain $35 − $30 $5 per share
Dividend Cash paid while owned $1 per share
Total gain before expenses $5 price gain + $1 dividend $6 per share
Simple price return $5 ÷ $30 × 100 16.7%, arithmetic derived from the example
Simple dividend-inclusive total return $6 ÷ $30 × 100 20.0%, arithmetic derived from the example

The 16.7% and 20.0% percentages are calculations from FINRA’s stated prices and dividend, not additional figures quoted by FINRA. They assume no dividend reinvestment, fees, taxes or other cash flows. Subtracting a commission or tax from the $6 gain would reduce the investor’s realized result, but it would not change the stock’s published price return.

Cash dividends and reinvested dividends are different conventions

Two sources can both call a number “total return” while modeling the dividend differently. Before comparing them, find the convention in the index, fund or data-provider documentation.

Convention How the distribution is treated What the result represents
Cash distribution The dividend is added once as money received per share Price change plus the stated cash income, before personal costs and taxes
Reinvestment The distribution is used to buy additional shares or index units according to the series methodology The value of the original holding plus the later value of reinvested income

Reinvestment introduces timing. A dividend that is reinvested earlier has more time to participate in later price movements than one reinvested at the end of the period. The exact result therefore depends on the source’s rules, including the date used for the reinvestment and how fractional units are handled. Do not combine a cash-dividend formula with a series that already embeds reinvestment; that would count the same income twice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a personal account, the dividend’s payment date, the price at which a reinvestment occurred, withholding and any elected cash treatment can all differ from a standardized index calculation. Label the result clearly instead of treating the standardized number as a statement of what every shareholder earned.

How an index total-return series differs from its price index

An SEC-hosted 2026 filing describing the S&P 500 methodology distinguishes the price index from the total-return index. The price index reflects stock-price changes. The total-return index reflects those price movements and reinvested dividend income. The filing explains that ordinary cash dividends are applied on the ex-dividend date and also discusses special dividends and index adjustments. Read the methodology at the SEC-hosted filing.

This is an index-construction rule, not a universal rule for an individual brokerage account. An index has defined constituents, weighting rules and adjustment procedures. Your account has its own purchase dates, share quantities, dividend elections, taxes and transaction costs. When comparing a stock with an index, compare price with price or total return with total return, and state whether the index income is reinvested.

Special dividends deserve particular care. A data provider may adjust the index level, distribute the value through a methodology rule or classify the event differently from an ordinary dividend. If the provider does not state how a particular distribution was handled, do not infer it from the headline number; use the documented series definition or mark the convention as unknown.

Account for fees, taxes and other cash flows

The formulas above describe a simple buy-and-hold period: one starting position, one ending position and, at most, dividends received per share. Real accounts may include purchases, sales, contributions, withdrawals, commissions, fund expenses, tax withholding or taxes on realized gains. Those events mean the simple percentage may not equal the account’s personal rate of return.

Keep two answers separate:

  • Security or benchmark return: the result from the stated prices, distributions and methodology, usually before your personal costs.
  • Investor outcome: what remains after commissions, other expenses, withholding and taxes, using your actual transaction dates and cash flows.

FINRA’s $30 example labels the $5 price gain and $6 total gain as before expenses. Preserve that qualification whenever you reuse the example. A pre-expense total return is useful for comparing securities on a common basis; it is not a guarantee of the amount an investor keeps.

If you made additional purchases or withdrawals, do not quietly insert them into the dividend-inclusive formula. Record each cash flow and use a return method designed for multiple cash flows, or report the simple holding-period calculation only for the original lot. The important point is to disclose which calculation you performed.

Interpret the sign and the gap between the two returns

The relationship between the two figures provides a quick diagnostic, but it does not replace checking the methodology.

Observed pattern What it can mean What to verify
Price return and total return are equal No dividend or distribution was included, or the period excluded it Whether the security paid income and whether the source reports a total-return series
Total return is higher than price return Income added value, with or without reinvestment Dividend amount, reinvestment assumption and whether fees are included
Both returns are negative The price decline was larger than the income contribution That the dates and signs were entered correctly; income does not guarantee a positive result
Price return is negative but total return is positive Income more than offset the price decline under the stated convention That the distribution belongs to the holding period and was not counted twice
The gap is unexpectedly large Different reinvestment, currency, date, adjustment or fee treatment Each series’ documentation and the exact observations used

Use the gap as a prompt to investigate, not as proof that one provider is wrong. A reinvested series can diverge from a cash-dividend calculation even when both start from the same share price.

Build the comparison in a spreadsheet

A small worksheet makes the assumptions visible and reduces transcription errors. Set up one row for the security and use columns with explicit labels:

  1. Starting price: enter the exact starting observation in cell A2.
  2. Ending price: enter the exact ending observation in cell B2.
  3. Dividends per share: enter the sum of qualifying cash distributions in cell C2. Enter zero when none were paid.
  4. Price return: in D2, enter =(B2-A2)/A2 and format the result as a percentage.
  5. Cash-dividend total return: in E2, enter =(B2-A2+C2)/A2 and format it as a percentage.
  6. Assumption note: in a separate note column, record the dates, currency, whether C2 is cash or reinvested income, and whether the figures are before fees and taxes.

For a reinvested published series, do not use the cash-dividend formula unless the provider says that is its convention. Enter the provider’s total-return value as a separate comparison field and retain the source definition beside it. This prevents a spreadsheet from appearing more precise than the underlying data.

Test the worksheet with FINRA’s illustration: A2 is 30, B2 is 35 and C2 is 1. The formulas produce 16.666…% and 20.0%, which you can display as 16.7% and 20.0% after rounding.

Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them

Comparing different dates

Symptom: one return starts before a dividend or ends after a major price move included in the other. Fix: record both start and end dates and use the same observations for both calculations.

Mixing a price index with a total-return index

Symptom: the total-return series appears higher and the difference is attributed entirely to management skill. Fix: compare like with like: price against price, or total return against total return with the same distribution convention.

Adding a dividend to a number that already reinvests it

Symptom: the calculated result is higher than both published figures. Fix: read the series definition. If dividends are reinvested in the reported total return, do not add them again as cash.

Forgetting the denominator

Symptom: the gain is divided by the ending price or by an average price. Fix: for the simple holding-period formula, divide by the starting price—the amount initially invested per share.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reporting dollars as a percentage

Symptom: the $5 gain in FINRA’s example is called a 5% return. Fix: divide by the $30 starting price: $5 is a per-share gain, while 16.7% is the corresponding simple price return.

Ignoring fees and taxes

Symptom: a pre-expense figure is presented as the investor’s take-home result. Fix: label the published or arithmetic result before expenses and calculate personal costs separately.

Using inconsistent currencies

Symptom: a local-currency stock return is compared with a converted benchmark return. Fix: convert both inputs under the same stated basis or keep the comparison in one currency.

Assuming income guarantees a gain

Symptom: a dividend is treated as proof that total return must be positive. Fix: check the net price change; a large decline can outweigh all distributions.

Choose the return that matches your question

Your question Use Reason
How much did the quoted share price move? Price return It removes dividend income and isolates the price component.
What did the holding produce including cash dividends? Dividend-inclusive total return It adds per-share income to the price change.
How did a benchmark perform with distributions put back into the series? A documented reinvested total-return series It follows the benchmark’s stated reinvestment methodology.
How much did I personally keep? An account-level calculation after applicable costs and taxes Your transaction dates, dividend election and tax treatment may differ from the standardized return.

When publishing or recording a comparison, put the convention in the label itself—for example, “simple price return,” “cash-dividend total return, before expenses,” or “reinvested total-return index.” That short label prevents readers from treating unlike numbers as interchangeable.

Final checks before you rely on the comparison

  • Both figures use the same security and start and end dates.
  • Starting and ending prices come from the same type of observation.
  • All qualifying dividends or distributions are identified.
  • The total-return convention says whether income is paid in cash or reinvested.
  • Currency and adjustment rules match.
  • Fees, commissions, taxes and other cash flows are labeled as included or excluded.
  • The result is presented as a historical calculation, not a promise that the investment will gain value.

Once those checks pass, the comparison is straightforward: price return tells you what happened to the quote, while total return adds the investment income under a specified convention. The difference is meaningful only when the two numbers share the same dates, basis and treatment of distributions.
