Steam’s player counter cannot tell you how many people play a game on every platform. It is a real-time, concurrent snapshot of Steam users, while PlayStation, Xbox and Epic Games Store figures may use different definitions, time windows and coverage. A defensible comparison starts by choosing one metric, fixing the same period and geography, and identifying whether each value is a public observation, first-party telemetry or a modelled estimate.
What a Steam player count actually measures
Steam exposes a number of users who are playing Steam games at the same moment. That is a concurrent-user measure, not a count of distinct people over a day or month. A person who plays for several sessions can contribute to many concurrent snapshots, while someone who owns the game but is offline contributes none.
For scale, Valve’s Steam statistics page showed 28,671,358 current concurrent users and a 41,889,474 peak on October 17, 2026. Those figures describe the entire Steam platform, not an individual game. A game’s own peak is the highest simultaneous Steam population observed for that title during the selected period.
- Current concurrent: users playing at the instant of the observation.
- Peak concurrent: the highest simultaneous count in a period.
- Average concurrent: the arithmetic average of concurrent observations; it is still not a unique-player total.
- Daily active users (DAU): distinct accounts active during a calendar day.
- Monthly active users (MAU): distinct accounts active during a month.
- Owners or sales: people who acquired the title, whether or not they played in the period.
- Hours played: total play time, which cannot be converted to unique players without additional assumptions.
Never compare a Steam peak with a console MAU estimate, or a Steam average with game sales. They answer different questions and will produce a misleading ratio even when every number is accurately reported.

Why Steam charts do not include console or Epic Games Store players
Steam’s public counter observes Steam activity only. It has no visibility into a title running on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch or the Epic Games Store. Cross-play makes the distinction easy to miss: a Steam player and a console player may appear together in one match, but only the Steam account contributes to Steam’s public number.
Console platform holders generally do not publish a live, per-game concurrent counter. A developer or publisher can see that activity in its own telemetry, subject to the game’s account system and privacy rules. When that first-party data is unavailable, analysts may use a named panel, survey or statistical model. Such a result must be labelled an estimate, with its methodology and uncertainty, rather than presented as an official PlayStation or Xbox count.
Epic has two different scopes that should not be conflated:
- Epic Games Store activity: players using the PC storefront to launch the game.
- Epic account or service activity: accounts connected to Epic services, potentially including people playing on other platforms.
Epic Online Services describes a developer capability as “One data set for all platforms.” That unified view exists only when the game implements the relevant services and the developer collects and reports the data. It does not make the Epic Games Store’s public information a universal player counter.
Epic Online Services announced more than 750 million Epic Games accounts in 2023. That is an ecosystem account figure, not the number of people playing a particular game, and it should never be substituted for a game-level audience.
Choose the metric before collecting numbers
Write the comparison question in one sentence, including the unit. “How many people were concurrently playing worldwide on the completed UTC day?” is answerable; “Which platform has the most players?” is not until “players” and the time period are defined.

If only concurrent data are available, compare concurrent data on every platform and call the result a simultaneous-population comparison. Do not quietly change to DAU or MAU for one platform to fill a gap.

Record the start and end in UTC, the time-zone convention, and whether the period is a launch, update, season, weekend or ordinary steady-state interval. A launch-day peak and a quiet Tuesday average describe different phases of a game’s life.
SteamPeaks states that its comparison tool uses UTC calendar days and warns that “today” is a partial day. Use completed UTC days when calculating averages. Also record the game build, season, event, free-to-play change or major patch in effect; a platform split can change after an update even when the audience is healthy.
For an intraday comparison, save the exact timestamp and interval length. For a daily comparison, save the full UTC date. For a monthly comparison, specify the calendar month and whether the provider reports distinct accounts or an extrapolation.
Capture and label Steam data correctly
Use the current and peak values for the same title
Record the game’s current concurrent count, the selected period’s peak, and—when available—the average for a completed day. Keep the observation time beside each value. A current value changes continuously; it is not interchangeable with the previous day’s peak.
Understand sampled historical charts
SteamPeaks documents five-minute observations for heavily played games. Its daily average is “the mean of the observed minute buckets after duplicate samples are removed,” and it explicitly says this is “an average number of concurrent players, never a count of unique people.” Sampling can miss short spikes, and coverage may be partial, so preserve the provider’s coverage note with the number.

Separate platform-wide context from game-level data
Valve’s 28,671,358 current users and 41,889,474 peak on October 17, 2026 are useful context for Steam’s overall scale. They must not be inserted into a game comparison as if they were that title’s audience. A game-level row should name the title, the exact window and the source that observed it.
Obtain PlayStation and Xbox figures without guessing
Prefer developer or publisher telemetry
The strongest source is the game operator’s cross-platform event data, with a definition such as “distinct accounts active in UTC during the period” or “maximum simultaneous sessions.” Ask whether the value includes free trials, subscription access, private test builds, bots and players who opted out of cross-play.
Use named estimates only when their method is disclosed
If first-party figures are unavailable, a measurement provider may model console activity from panels, surveys, public signals or other inputs. Identify the provider, geography, period and uncertainty interval. Write “estimated PlayStation DAU” rather than “PlayStation players” and do not convert the estimate into a precise count of platform-owner users.

Do not infer a console split from matchmaking
Queue times, lobby size, streamer observations and cross-play anecdotes cannot reveal the platform mix. Matchmaking may pool regions, bots and multiple input pools, and the sample is biased toward the observer’s schedule. Without a cited model, these observations are qualitative context only.
Measure Epic activity at the right layer
Epic Games Store storefront population
A storefront figure should mean players who launched the PC build through the Epic Games Store during the stated window. It does not automatically include Steam users, console users or people authenticated through an Epic account elsewhere.
Epic Online Services account-linked population
When a developer implements Epic Online Services and links identities across platforms, it can report a unified game population. Confirm whether the reported unit is an account, a device, a session or a distinct person, and whether linked Steam, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch identities are de-duplicated.

Keep the 750-million-account figure in context
The more-than-750-million Epic Games accounts announced in 2023 describe the service ecosystem. They are not a denominator for calculating a game’s market share and do not reveal how many accounts were active in that game during any period.

Normalize scope before comparing rows
Put these fields beside every number:
- Metric and unit: concurrent, DAU, MAU, unique players, hours, owners or sales.
- Window: exact UTC start and end, or a completed UTC day, week or month.
- Geography: worldwide or named countries and regions.
- Access model: paid ownership, free-to-play, trial, subscription or cloud access.
- Platform scope: storefront-only, console-only or a cross-platform account population.
- Build and event: game version, season, launch phase or patch.
- Evidence type: public observation, first-party telemetry, panel or model.
- Coverage and uncertainty: sample interval, missing periods, confidence interval and provider caveats.
If one platform covers worldwide concurrent users and another covers United States MAU, show separate rows and explain the mismatch. Do not manufacture a ratio from incompatible scopes.
Account for overlap across platforms
Adding platform totals can double-count people. A player may own the game on Steam and Xbox, switch devices during the month, or link both identities to one Epic account. Even a perfect sum of account records would not necessarily equal distinct human beings.
Ask whether the source de-duplicates linked identities. If it does, report the unified unique-player value and list platform participation separately. If it does not, present each platform row independently and state that the totals are not additive. A concurrent comparison is especially vulnerable to overlap: the same person can be counted on different platforms at different times within the window.

Use a table that exposes the definitions instead of hiding them in a footnote:

Use “not stated” when a source does not disclose a field. That is more honest than filling a blank with a guessed value.

Use modelled intelligence with explicit uncertainty
For professional benchmarking, Sensor Tower’s Video Game Insights product says it covers more than 140,000 games, provides over 10 years of daily time series and aggregates data from more than 4 million public player profiles. Those statements describe the product’s coverage and data basis, not a guarantee that any one game’s platform count is exact. Treat its console or PC figures as modelled measurements unless the provider identifies them as first-party reports, and retain the stated confidence or caveat.
A model is useful for directional comparisons—such as identifying whether console activity is likely larger than Steam activity—but precision should match the evidence. Report a range when the provider supplies one, and avoid ranking platforms when uncertainty intervals overlap.
Common failure modes and fixes
Calling a peak “the player base”
Problem: A peak is mistaken for total owners or monthly reach.
Fix: Label it “maximum concurrent Steam players during [window]” and use DAU, MAU or unique accounts for audience size.

Problem: The day is still incomplete, so its average and peak are biased downward or unstable.
Fix: Wait for a completed UTC day and record the exact date.
Mixing regions or access rules
Problem: Worldwide free-to-play Steam data are compared with a regional paid-console estimate.
Fix: Match geography and eligibility, or keep separate rows with an explicit scope warning.
Treating an estimate as an official count
Problem: A panel or model is presented as PlayStation or Xbox telemetry.
Fix: Name the provider, call it estimated, and include its method and uncertainty.
Summing linked accounts
Problem: Steam, Epic and console totals are added to produce a worldwide audience.
Fix: Check identity de-duplication; otherwise report platform values separately and say the sum may double-count.
Assuming cross-play proves equal platform populations
Problem: Busy mixed lobbies are treated as evidence that every platform is equally large.
Fix: Use telemetry or a documented estimate. Matchmaking visibility is not a platform census.
A repeatable eight-step workflow
- Name the metric. Select concurrent players, DAU, MAU, unique players, hours, owners or sales.
- Freeze the window. Write UTC start and end, launch or steady-state context, and the build or season.
- Capture Steam. Save current count, period peak and completed-day average, each labelled concurrent.
- Obtain console data. Prefer publisher telemetry; otherwise cite a named provider and its estimate method.
- Obtain Epic data. Separate Epic Games Store activity from Epic Online Services account-linked telemetry.
- Normalize scope. Match regions, access models, eligibility, cross-play rules and version.
- Show uncertainty. Include sample coverage, ranges and confidence notes for modelled values.
- Explain overlap. State whether linked identities are de-duplicated before anyone interprets totals.
Following these steps lets a reader distinguish a directly observed Steam snapshot from an estimated console audience and a developer’s de-duplicated cross-platform count. It also explains why a game can look modest on Steam charts yet produce busy cross-play matches: the visible Steam slice may be only one part of a larger, differently measured audience.
