Compare the same game workload on the same physical hardware, with matching builds, settings and test conditions. Repeat the runs, report frame time in milliseconds as well as FPS, inspect CPU and GPU timings when available, and show run-to-run variation. The result describes that game and configuration—not every project that uses the engine.
What a fair engine-version comparison actually measures
An engine upgrade is not a controlled experiment if the old and new versions are tested with different scenes, resolutions, quality presets, drivers or build types. Those differences can be larger than the engine change itself. A fair comparison keeps the workload and the measurement conditions constant, changing only the engine version (and the code or asset changes that the upgrade necessarily requires).
The useful question is therefore specific: under a named build, on a named system, at a named resolution and graphics configuration, how did this game’s performance change? A result can show faster or slower frame production, different frame pacing, or a change in the limiting subsystem. It cannot establish a universal ranking of engine versions or predict performance on hardware you did not test.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDecide what “better” means before testing
- Higher throughput: more frames per second during the same workload.
- Lower frame time: fewer milliseconds required to produce each frame.
- Smoother pacing: fewer long frames and less severe spikes, even if the average FPS changes little.
- More headroom: lower game-thread, render-thread or GPU time, leaving capacity for effects, AI or higher resolution.
Write the primary goal down before you run anything. Otherwise it is easy to select the metric that makes an upgrade look best after seeing the results.

Define the comparison scope and record it
Give both builds an unambiguous identity. Record the game version or commit, engine version, platform, executable type and date. If the upgrade also changes shaders, assets, scripts, rendering APIs or project settings, list those changes rather than presenting the test as an engine-only result.
| Control to record | What to capture | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Game and engine | Game build identifier, old and new engine versions, source revision | A later hotfix or a different engine patch can alter performance independently. |
| Build configuration | Development, profiling or shipping/production build; compiler and optimization options | Instrumentation and optimization affect timings. Matching settings makes the comparison interpretable. |
| Rendering setup | Graphics API, resolution, quality options, upscaling, shadows, effects and texture settings | A preset or API change can move the bottleneck from the CPU to the GPU, or the reverse. |
| Display policy | VSync state, frame cap, refresh rate and window mode | A cap can hide the time the game would otherwise spend producing a frame. |
| System state | CPU, GPU, memory, operating-system build, driver version, power mode and background applications | Thermal throttling, driver changes and background work create variation unrelated to the engine. |
Godot’s optimization guidance specifically recommends rebuilding after changes with the exact same build settings as the baseline. Apply that principle to any engine: if matching is impossible, document the difference and treat it as part of the practical upgrade rather than silently attributing it to the engine.
Choose a workload that can be repeated
Prefer representative gameplay
A built-in benchmark is convenient when it is deterministic and available in both versions. Otherwise, use a scripted route through a representative level: the same player inputs, camera path, enemy count, simulation state and test duration each time. Include the part of the game you want to understand—ordinary play for a player-facing claim, or a known stress scene for diagnosis.
Godot contributor guidance calls testing real games the “golden standard.” A synthetic test can isolate a subsystem such as draw-call submission or physics, but it should be labeled as such and must not be treated as proof of overall game performance.
Make the run deterministic enough to compare
- Start from the same save, checkpoint or freshly loaded scene.
- Use a fixed route and fixed camera movement; record the input script or replay method.
- Keep random seeds, AI population, weather, time of day and simulation speed constant where the game permits.
- Choose and report a fixed duration. Include loading time only if loading is part of the question; otherwise measure after the scene has settled.
- Define a warm-up policy. For example, discard the first run if shader compilation or asset streaming makes it unlike normal play, and apply that rule to both versions.
If a scene cannot be reproduced exactly, capture enough detail for another tester to understand the difference and report the limitation. A repeatable imperfect workload is more useful than an impressive but one-off sequence.
Keep hardware and software conditions identical
Use the same physical computer for both versions whenever possible. Do not compare the old build on one graphics card with the new build on another and then call the result an engine improvement. If multiple systems are required, analyze each system separately and label the hardware; never average unlike bottlenecks into one number.

- Install the same operating-system build and GPU driver for both test passes. Record unavoidable updates.
- Use the same monitor resolution and refresh rate. Disable adaptive display features if they alter frame delivery, or keep them enabled identically and explain the choice.
- Set an identical power plan and fan or performance mode. Watch for temperature-related clock changes during long runs.
- Close unrelated applications, download clients, overlays and recording software. If capture is necessary, use the same capture method and settings for every run.
- Keep graphics options, field of view, resolution scaling, ray-tracing state and texture streaming settings identical.
Unreal Engine 4.27 profiling documentation warns that VSync can impose a 30- or 60-FPS ceiling and recommends profiling without it for more accurate timing. Remove VSync and any frame cap when measuring the engine’s unconstrained work, unless the purpose is specifically to evaluate the capped player experience. In that case, retain the cap for both builds and state it prominently.

Measure FPS, frame time and frame pacing
FPS is easy to read, but frame time in milliseconds tells you how long each frame actually took. Epic’s Unreal documentation describes both as performance measures and recommends milliseconds for profiling because the time budget is explicit. At 60 FPS, a frame has about 16.7 ms; at 30 FPS, about 33.3 ms. Averages alone can conceal intermittent 50-ms or 100-ms frames, so retain the distribution or a graph when the tool provides it.
| Metric | What it answers | How to report it |
|---|---|---|
| Average FPS | How many frames were produced on average during the interval | State the measured interval and whether the number is an arithmetic mean or a tool-reported average. |
| Frame time | How long each frame took to complete | Report milliseconds, preferably with median and high-percentile values or a frame-time plot. |
| Minimum or worst frames | Whether the run contains severe hitches | Define the window and avoid calling one isolated outlier a general minimum. |
| Game-thread time | Whether simulation, scripting or gameplay is limiting production | Use the engine’s timing counter when available; include units and capture method. |
| Render-thread time | Whether command submission and rendering preparation are limiting | Report it separately from game-thread time. |
| GPU time | Whether the graphics processor is the limiting stage | Record the GPU timer and resolution/settings used. |
| Frame-time spread | How repeatable and smooth the run is | Show every run or a central value with a stated spread. |
Use the timing breakdown to identify the bottleneck. If GPU time is near the frame time while game-thread time is low, an engine change that reduces CPU work may not raise FPS at that resolution. Conversely, a lower average FPS with fewer spikes can still produce a smoother experience. Do not add game-thread, render-thread and GPU times together as if they were always serial; engines overlap work, and the counters describe different stages.
Step-by-step test protocol
- Write the test question. Specify whether you are evaluating player-visible performance, a suspected regression, loading, a demanding scene or a subsystem.
- Freeze the workload. Select a built-in benchmark or document the exact scene, route, inputs, camera, duration, seed and warm-up treatment.
- Prepare matching builds. Rebuild old and new versions with the same optimization, packaging and configuration settings where possible. Record compiler, API and default-setting differences that cannot be matched.
- Prepare the test system. Confirm hardware, OS, driver, power mode, display mode and background-process policy. Reboot if that is part of your normal procedure and apply it to both versions.
- Set graphics and display options. Match resolution, quality, scaling, effects, VSync and frame-cap policy. For unconstrained profiling, disable VSync and caps in both builds.
- Choose measurement tools. Enable the engine’s FPS and timing counters or an external capture tool. Note whether an overlay, profiler or recorder is active because instrumentation can add overhead.
- Warm up consistently. Apply the same loading and shader-compilation rule to each version. Mark discarded warm-up runs instead of quietly deleting inconvenient data.
- Run multiple repetitions. Execute the identical route several times per build. Save raw FPS, frame-time and CPU/GPU timing data for every run.
- Check run validity. Reject and explain a run only for a predefined reason, such as an input error or unrelated system interruption. Do not discard a slow run merely because it weakens the conclusion.
- Analyze and report. Compare central values, spread, frame-time spikes and bottleneck timings. State the conditions and the limits of what the result can support.
How many repetitions are enough?
There is no universal number of runs or universal noise threshold for every game and computer. Run until the normal variation is visible and the conclusion does not depend on one lucky pass. Three runs may reveal obvious instability; a highly variable streaming scene may require more. Showing every run is preferable when the sample is small.
Godot’s current contributor optimization guidance says fluctuations of up to 10% are common and expected in its benchmark context. Treat that as guidance for that context, not permission to label every change below 10% meaningless. UL Benchmarks’ current Game testing FAQ gives an estimate of ±15% accuracy for UL’s own published game-performance estimation method; that figure is specific to UL’s method and is not a tolerance for your test.

Report the spread in the same units as the result. For example, state each run’s average FPS and the corresponding frame-time summary, then give the range or another clearly defined statistic. A 4% FPS increase with 8% run-to-run variation is inconclusive in that setup; a consistent reduction in 99th-percentile frame time across all runs is a different finding even if average FPS barely moves. Because no broadly applicable statistical threshold was identified for engine-version comparisons, explain your decision rather than invoking a made-up cutoff.

Interpreting changes without overclaiming
Separate throughput from smoothness
Compare both the central frame rate and the frame-time distribution. An engine update may leave the mean unchanged while removing periodic spikes, or raise the mean while introducing occasional hitches. Describe those as different outcomes instead of collapsing them into “faster” or “slower.”
Locate the limiting stage
Use available game-thread, render-thread and GPU timings to explain a change. A shift from game-thread limitation to GPU limitation may mean the update removed CPU overhead and exposed the next constraint. It is not evidence that every scene will scale the same way.
Compare against the observed spread
Ask whether the difference is larger and more consistent than normal variation. If only one of several runs moves, repeat the test and investigate background work, thermal state, streaming and instrumentation. If all runs move in the same direction, the evidence is stronger, but it still applies only to the tested workload and configuration.
Keep the conclusion local
A single title, scene and target system show how that title behaves under those conditions. Do not extrapolate to every game using the engine, to another graphics card, or to a different resolution without additional controlled tests. If you test several scenes or systems, present them as separate results so readers can see where the behavior changes.
Common failure modes and their fixes
A frame cap hides the difference
Symptom: both builds report exactly 60 FPS or 30 FPS despite different workload complexity. Fix: disable VSync and software caps for an unconstrained profile, or explicitly frame the result as capped-play experience and keep the cap identical.
The builds are not equivalent
Symptom: one version uses a development build, different quality defaults or a different graphics API. Fix: rebuild with matching settings, list unavoidable differences and avoid attributing their effect solely to the engine.

The route changes between runs
Symptom: AI decisions, camera position or player actions vary. Fix: use a replay or input script, fixed seed and defined starting state; if that is impossible, report the workload as non-deterministic and increase repetitions.

Player-facing comparison versus diagnostic profiling
These goals require different builds and reporting choices. For a player-facing upgrade assessment, use production-like builds, normal settings and representative play. Keep overlays and heavy profilers off, because the objective is the experience a player receives.

For diagnosis, an isolated scene, profiling build and detailed counters can reveal whether game, render or GPU work changed. Such a test is valuable for fixing a regression, but it should be identified as diagnostic and not presented as a prediction of ordinary play. You can run both: publish the production-like result first, then use the diagnostic pass to explain it.
Engine-specific guidance and source limits
Epic’s Unreal Engine 4.27 profiling guide is version-specific. Its advice to create a reproducible case, measure several times and use milliseconds remains useful, but current Unreal versions may expose different commands or UI. Unreal Engine 5.8 documentation likewise describes current profiling concepts without promising a particular result on your hardware.
Godot’s optimization guidance emphasizes matching build settings, testing real games and observing run-to-run fluctuation. Its “up to 10%” figure belongs to that guidance and test context. Unity’s benchmarking article describes using one project across differing platform and player configurations; it is an example of a workflow, not a universal controlled-comparison standard.
UL Benchmarks describes using a built-in benchmark where available or a live gameplay scenario and checking frame-rate consistency across systems. Its ±15% estimate applies to UL’s own estimation method. None of these sources establishes a general statistical threshold that declares an engine-version change meaningful for every game.
What to publish with the result
A reader should be able to understand exactly what was compared and decide whether it resembles their setup. Include:
- Game build and both engine versions, including any code, asset or renderer changes made during the upgrade.
- CPU, GPU, memory, operating system, driver and display details.
- Resolution, graphics options, scaling, API, VSync and frame-cap policy.
- Workload description, route or benchmark name, duration, seed, starting state and warm-up treatment.
- Build type, compiler or optimization settings, and whether profiling or recording was active.
- Every run’s FPS and frame-time data, plus the summary statistic and spread you use.
- Game-thread, render-thread and GPU timings when the engine exposes them.
- Any interruption, rejected run or unavoidable mismatch, with the reason.
- A conclusion limited to the tested title, workload and hardware.
This record turns “the update feels faster” into a reproducible claim. It also makes a later retest possible when a driver, operating system or engine patch changes the environment.
