Put the travel answer first: say what is closed, where and when, then give the route around it in text. A clear closure notice separates effects on pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, parking, transit and building access; identifies accessible routes and entrances; and pairs directions with a dated, legible map. Keep the page current as construction phases change, and make its instructions agree with on-site signs.
Start with a traveler’s immediate question
Campus visitors should not have to decode a project description to find out whether they can reach a building. Lead each notice with recognizable names for the affected road, path, lot, stop or entrance. State the closure and its timing, then explain how to reach the destination during the work.
For campuses with multiple projects, use a central construction-alert or closure page that links to individual notices. Colorado State University organizes impacts across roads and parking, pedestrian and bicycle routes, and building access or elevators; Georgia Tech pairs a timeline map with dated updates and project contacts. These are examples of useful hub-and-notice structures, not requirements for every campus.

Location, dates and confidence
Give a start date and time and an expected end date or defined work window. If work is intermittent, phase-dependent or subject to change, say so plainly. Mark the notice with a visible last-updated date and revise it when the route or schedule changes. If the end date is unknown, do not present a guess as certain; state what is known and how readers can get the next update.

Construction schedules can shift with weather, site conditions or project needs. Colorado State’s notices make that uncertainty explicit. The important practice is to distinguish a confirmed closure from an estimate and keep the notice synchronized with actual conditions.
Separate impacts by travel mode and service
A road closure may also affect a bike lane, sidewalk, parking lot, bus stop, loading area or building entrance—but not necessarily in the same way or for the same period. Name each impact that applies instead of relying on a generic “closure” label.
- Pedestrians: identify the closed walkway and the alternate path.
- Bicyclists: say whether a bike lane or path is closed and explain the available route or dismount requirement, if confirmed.
- Drivers: identify the closed segment, access restrictions and vehicle detour.
- Parking: identify affected lots or spaces and list alternatives only when availability is confirmed.
- Transit: name relocated or unavailable stops and link to the relevant transit alert when one exists.
- Building access: identify entrances that remain open, elevator impacts, and any loading or service changes that affect visitors.
Wright State, for example, describes vehicle access rerouted to parking lots via Center Park Boulevard, relocated bus stops and a tunnel that remains open to pedestrians. The value of that level of detail is that each traveler can find the instruction relevant to their trip.

Describe the route, not just the closure
Give directions in words using familiar landmarks, turns, connecting paths or street names. Specify which destination entrance remains usable. Colorado State names alternate paths around a sidewalk closure, while Wright State pairs a reroute with details for vehicles, buses and pedestrians.
Do not assume that a colored line on a map is enough. A traveler may be using a screen reader, have difficulty interpreting the map, or need to check directions before arriving. The route should make sense without visual interpretation.

State accessible access explicitly
Identify the accessible detour and the entrance it reaches, including ramps or temporary paths when those conditions are confirmed. If accessible parking changes, specify what remains available and where. Eastern Illinois describes temporary ramps, continued east–west pedestrian access, available ADA parking and alternate entrances across project phases; Maryland identifies ADA-compliant detours and an accessibility contact.
Do not make readers infer accessibility from a map or a general statement that a route is open. Confirm path conditions with the responsible campus team, and provide a direct contact for access problems.
Include safety, emergency access and a contact
Explain relevant restrictions and direct travelers to follow posted signs and instructions from on-site personnel. If construction changes emergency access, describe the confirmed arrangement. Maryland says emergency vehicles retain access; Eastern Illinois describes bollards being removed to allow emergency access. Avoid implying that a website map overrides field instructions.
Name the responsible office or project contact and provide a direct way to report a blocked route, inaccessible entrance or other access issue. A general campus contact is less useful when a specific project team can resolve the problem.
Pair text directions with a useful map
Place a map near the notice it explains. Center it on the affected area and make the closure limits and detour route easy to distinguish. Use a legend and labels as well as color or line styles; do not rely on color alone. If the route changes by phase, label the map with the relevant phase or date.

Wright State and Colorado State pair route information with project maps, and Michigan State provides an interactive closure and walking-wayfinding map. A map helps with orientation, but it should supplement—not replace—the written directions and access information.

The W3C Web Accessibility Initiative says complex images contain substantial information that cannot be conveyed in a short phrase or sentence. For a map carrying route information, identify the image and provide the essential information in text nearby. Its Images Tutorial also says: “Images must have text alternatives that describe the information or function represented by them.” If a map has interactive regions, provide context for the map as a whole and text describing the purpose or destination of each region.
These are accessibility authoring recommendations, not a complete legal compliance checklist. Consult the institution’s accessibility team about implementation and conformance.
Keep the page trustworthy as work changes
Assign an owner to each notice and require an update when field conditions change. Coordinate web updates with physical signs and any transit, parking or emergency notices so people do not receive conflicting directions. Remove expired information or preserve it in a clearly dated archive when it helps users understand upcoming phases.
Michigan State’s map defaults to the current date and lets users filter by a custom date and inspect walking routes. That is one documented way to support changing conditions, not evidence that an interactive map is best for every campus. A static page can also work if staff can update it promptly and users can find the current route.

Choosing between a notice page and an interactive map
Compare approaches against the work your campus actually needs to do:
- How quickly can staff update a changed construction phase?
- Can travelers filter by date or travel mode if those distinctions matter?
- Does the system show a route around a closure, or only mark closure locations?
- Can users access equivalent directions and controls without interpreting a map?
- Who owns and verifies the underlying closure information?
Michigan State documents date filtering and walking-route visualization. It is an example to consider, not proof that one software approach is suitable for all institutions.
A reusable closure-notice checklist
- Write a specific headline. Name the closed road, path, lot, building entrance or other recognizable location.
- Give dates and timing. Include the start, expected end or work window, explain uncertainty, and display when the notice was last updated.
- List the distinct impacts. Cover the modes and facilities affected, such as sidewalks, bike lanes, vehicle access, parking, transit stops and entrances.
- Explain how to reach the destination. Name the detour route, landmarks and usable entrance; identify parking or transit alternatives only when confirmed.
- Add a labeled map. Show the closure and detour clearly, and date or phase-label it if the route changes.
- Describe accessible access in text. Name the accessible route and entrance, and provide an accessibility contact for route problems.
- Cover safety and emergency access. Include relevant restrictions and tell travelers to follow on-site signs and personnel.
- Assign an owner and contact. Confirm routes and dates with campus operations, then keep the web notice aligned with field conditions.

West walkway closed between Library Plaza and Cedar Hall, October 20–November 7
What is changing: The west walkway is closed for construction. The closure affects pedestrian access; the project team has not reported a change to vehicle access or transit service.
