To combine portrait clips cleanly, create the project in a vertical 9:16 canvas first, add the videos to one timeline, trim and reorder them, then decide how every non-vertical clip should be framed. Review faces, captions and edges in the finished portrait preview before exporting. This order prevents a landscape clip or a late aspect-ratio change from cutting off important content.
What combining videos in portrait mode actually involves
Combining videos means placing separate clips one after another in a single sequence and exporting that sequence as one file. Portrait mode describes the shape of the project, not merely the orientation of the first clip. A vertical project is normally expressed as a 9:16 aspect ratio, the choice documented in Adobe Premiere mobile. Once that canvas is set, each source clip must be fitted into it.
The canvas controls the visible frame, preview and export dimensions. If you import clips before choosing the project shape, an editor may inherit the first clip’s dimensions or apply a default that does not match your intended destination. Changing the ratio at the end can force a new crop across the entire sequence. Set the portrait canvas before you make final framing decisions.
Choose an editor that matches your phone and the job
| Editor | Device route | Portrait-canvas control | Reframing approach | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CapCut | iPhone and Android | Portrait project and timeline workflow | Manual adjustment of each clip; use the editor’s crop or fit controls | Fast phone-first assembly of several clips |
| iMovie | iPhone with clips from the Photo Library | Timeline editing with the project orientation determined by the selected media and project workflow | Manual zoom, position and crop in the viewer | Apple-native editing with a simple sequence |
| Adobe Premiere mobile | Mobile workflow | Explicit aspect-ratio choices, including 9:16 | Manual framing plus subject-aware Auto Reframe | Projects that mix orientations or need more controlled reframing |
All three support the essential operation: selecting multiple clips, placing them in sequence, trimming the timeline and exporting the result. The practical difference is how explicitly each one exposes the portrait canvas and how much help it gives when a subject moves inside a vertical frame.

Prepare your clips before opening the project
Sort the story and orientation
Put the source files in the intended order and note which are portrait, landscape or another size. Decide whether the final video is for a vertical feed, a story, a short-form channel or private playback. The destination determines whether you should preserve a subject’s full body, keep text inside a safe central area or fill the frame aggressively.
Check what must not be cut
Identify faces, subtitles, product labels, screen recordings and other details that cannot touch the crop edges. A landscape clip can contain important information at both sides; a center crop may remove it even when the speaker remains visible. If a clip is already tightly framed, leave extra room for movement rather than zooming further.
Keep the originals and allow working space
Editing does not require replacing your camera files. Keep the originals in the Photo Library or device storage and work from copies when you expect to test different crops. Make sure the phone has enough free storage for rendered previews and the final export, especially when the sequence contains high-resolution clips.

Universal workflow: combine clips in a portrait canvas
- Create a new project and choose the vertical canvas. Select the portrait option, expressed as 9:16 where the editor displays aspect ratios. Do this before final cropping or adding titles.
- Import all required clips. Select the videos from your device or Photo Library, then add them to the project. Confirm that every intended clip appears in the media bin or timeline.
- Arrange the sequence. Place clips in narrative order on the main timeline. Drag a clip to change its position; do not rely on the order in which files were recorded unless that is your intended story.
- Trim the starts and ends. Remove camera starts, pauses and accidental recording tails by dragging each clip’s edge. Zoom into the timeline when a cut must land precisely on speech or action.
- Inspect each clip inside the 9:16 frame. Play the sequence and watch the portrait preview, not just a thumbnail. Check that faces, hands, captions and on-screen controls stay visible from the first frame to the last.
- Resolve orientation mismatches. For every landscape or differently sized clip, choose crop-to-fill, fit-with-bars or a background treatment. Apply the choice intentionally rather than accepting an automatic crop that hides content.
- Reframe moving subjects. Use manual position and zoom controls for short, static shots. Where available, run Auto Reframe to have the editor follow a detected subject, then review its keyframes and correct any drift.
- Make transitions and audio continuous. Keep cuts clean unless a transition helps the story. Listen for abrupt volume changes, clipped words or silence created by trimming. If a transition changes the apparent orientation, inspect the frames on both sides of it.
- Preview the complete sequence in portrait orientation. Watch from the first frame through the final frame at the size your audience will see. Pause at every cut and title to verify that no important detail sits under a crop edge.
- Export only after composition is locked. Choose the destination’s appropriate quality and frame-rate options, retain the portrait project ratio, and wait for the export to finish before closing the app. Open the resulting file outside the editor to verify playback.
How to combine portrait videos in CapCut
iPhone workflow
- Open CapCut and choose the command to create a new project.
- Select the videos from the iPhone library in the order you want them to appear, then tap the add or import control.
- Check the project canvas or format control and set it to a vertical 9:16 frame before making detailed crops.
- On the timeline, drag clips to reorder them and drag either edge to trim unwanted material.
- Select a clip to adjust its crop, scale and position. Keep the subject inside the portrait frame throughout the shot.
- For a landscape clip, preview both a center crop and a fit option with side space. Choose the version that preserves the information your viewer needs.
- Play the entire timeline, then use CapCut’s export control. Select output options that match the source and the service where the file will be posted.
Android workflow
- Start a new CapCut project and select the required videos from the device gallery.
- Confirm the vertical format in the project or canvas controls. If the app opens with another ratio, change it before reframing clips.
- Arrange and trim the clips on the timeline. Use the preview to check whether the Android gallery’s landscape files need a different crop from your portrait recordings.
- Adjust each mismatched clip individually; one setting may not suit every shot because subjects can be positioned differently.
- Preview the complete sequence and export from the project screen. After rendering, play the saved file in the device’s normal video app to check the final orientation and sound.
CapCut’s iPhone and Android procedures use the same basic model—select multiple videos, edit them on one timeline and export—but the names or placement of controls can vary with the app version. If a control is not visible, first tap the clip or open the project-format panel; clip-specific tools generally appear only after a clip is selected.

How to merge clips with iMovie on an iPhone
- Open iMovie and create a new movie project.
- In the media browser, select multiple videos from the iPhone Photo Library. Choose them in the order that should appear, then create the movie so iMovie places them on its timeline.
- Tap a clip to reveal its editing handles. Drag the handles to remove unwanted starts and ends, and drag the clip itself if you need to change the order.
- Use the viewer’s crop, zoom or reposition controls to keep the important part of each shot inside the portrait composition. Check the viewer after every adjustment.
- Review the project from beginning to end. iMovie’s simple timeline is useful for a straightforward sequence, but mixed landscape and portrait footage still needs a deliberate decision about cropping or leaving side space.
- Use iMovie’s share or export command when the sequence is ready. Select a quality appropriate to the destination, save the rendered movie, and verify it in the Photos app.
iMovie is convenient when the clips already live in the Apple Photo Library and you want a native timeline. It offers less explicit aspect-ratio decision-making than an editor that exposes a 9:16 project selector, so inspect the exported file rather than assuming that the project inherited the framing you intended.
How to set up portrait projects in Adobe Premiere mobile
- Create a new project and open the project settings or aspect-ratio selector.
- Choose 9:16 before arranging final crops. Premiere’s mobile documentation lists 9:16 among its selectable ratios and updates the project to the chosen shape.
- Import the source clips and place them in sequence on the timeline. Trim the edit while watching the portrait monitor.
- For clips that do not match the canvas, choose whether to crop to fill, fit with bars or use a background treatment. Premiere documents automatic black or blurred fill for mismatched media; use that only when it supports the visual design.
- When a moving subject needs to remain visible, apply Auto Reframe. The feature analyzes the main subject and adjusts framing over time to match the project ratio.
- Play the Auto Reframe result at normal speed and inspect every cut. Correct the framing manually if the subject is misidentified, briefly leaves the frame or is blocked by another object.
- Open the export controls after the portrait composition is complete. Select output settings suitable for the source and destination, render the movie and review the exported file.
Auto Reframe is an assistant, not a guarantee. It can follow the detected subject while missing a second speaker, a product at the edge or text that matters more than the face. Manual review remains necessary even when the automatic result looks correct in a short preview.
What to do with landscape clips in a portrait sequence
Crop to fill
Crop-to-fill enlarges the landscape image until the vertical canvas is covered. It removes the left and right sides, so it works best when the subject stays near the center and peripheral details are unimportant. Reposition the crop for each shot; a single center position will not suit a speaker who moves across the frame.
Fit the entire image
Fitting preserves the complete landscape frame and leaves empty space above and below or at the sides, depending on the editor’s treatment. This is the safest choice for wide diagrams, group scenes and screen recordings whose edges contain essential information. Plain bars can look intentional when they are consistent across the sequence.

Use a background treatment
A blurred or darkened duplicate behind the fitted clip fills the portrait canvas while retaining the original image. Adobe’s mobile documentation describes automatic black or blurred fill for mismatched clips. Keep the background subtle so it does not compete with subtitles or the main image, and check that the treatment remains consistent when the next clip starts.
Reframe with motion
For a wide shot containing several points of interest, animate the crop so the viewer sees one area and then another. Manual keyframes provide control; Auto Reframe can help when the subject is clear and moving. Avoid rapid digital zooms that make the clip feel unstable, and preview the full move rather than judging only its first frame.
Keep text, faces and captions safe
Portrait crops are hardest on information near the horizontal edges. Read every subtitle at the smallest intended playback size. If a caption was burned into a landscape clip, it may be cut or become too close to the bottom edge after a center crop; reposition the video or add a new caption layer only if the editor allows you to keep it readable.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check eyes and foreheads at the top edge and hands or products at the bottom edge. A subject can be inside the frame at the start and leave it during a pan. Scrub through the shot, not just the opening thumbnail. When several people share a wide shot, fitting the entire image or using a wider portrait-safe crop is usually more informative than following only one face.

Transitions, audio and timing after the merge
Transitions
A straight cut is the most predictable transition between clips with different orientations. If you add a dissolve, swipe or other effect, inspect the middle of the transition for a brief flash of the wrong crop or a rotated frame. Keep transition duration consistent unless a deliberate pause or time jump requires otherwise.
Audio continuity
Trimming video also trims its linked audio in most mobile editors. Listen at every cut for a clipped syllable, a sudden volume jump or a gap created by removing a section. If one clip is much louder, adjust its clip volume rather than raising the entire project and causing louder sections to distort.
Timing and pacing
Portrait viewers often encounter a clip in a fast-scrolling feed, so remove dead air and repeated actions while retaining enough time to read on-screen text. Do not shorten a shot so aggressively that Auto Reframe or a manual pan cannot complete its movement.

Export settings and final quality checks
Export controls differ by editor and app version, but the decision sequence is stable: lock the 9:16 composition, then choose quality and frame-rate options that the source and destination support. Exporting before the crop is final can produce a file that must be rendered again after every framing change.

Troubleshooting portrait-video merges
The final video is horizontal
Return to the project settings and confirm the canvas is 9:16, then export again after the change. If the editor has no explicit ratio control, check whether the first imported clip established the project shape and whether the app offers a rotate or crop command for the project rather than an individual clip.
A vertical clip has black bars or unexpected cropping
Select that clip and inspect its fit, fill, crop and scale settings. A clip can have different treatment from the clips before and after it. Choose fit when all of the image matters, or crop and reposition when filling the frame is more important.
A landscape clip cuts off the speaker
Pause on the frame where the speaker is farthest from the center. Reduce the scale, move the crop toward the speaker or switch to a fitted frame with a background. If the speaker moves, use manual keyframes or rerun Auto Reframe and then correct the missed moments.

Review the analysis from the first frame to the last. If the editor lets you select a subject, choose the intended person or object; otherwise use manual position and scale controls for the affected section. Automatic tracking cannot know that a small product or subtitle is more important than a large face unless you direct the composition yourself.
Captions disappear after export
Check whether the captions are inside the video layer, on a separate text layer, or outside the safe area. Move them inward, preview the export-sized frame and render a short test if the editor provides that option. Do not judge caption placement from a landscape preview.
The sequence has uneven volume
Listen to each clip separately, lower unusually loud sections and replay the transitions. Keep enough headroom to avoid distortion; increasing the master level cannot repair a clipped recording.
The export looks soft
Confirm that you did not enlarge a low-resolution source far beyond its native detail, and choose an export quality appropriate to the original clips. A portrait crop of a wide source discards pixels at the sides; replacing the source with a closer, higher-resolution recording is the only way to recover detail that was never captured.
