Combining text files means joining their contents into one output file or stream, usually in a chosen order. The quickest command depends on your shell: use cat in a Unix-like shell, copy in Windows Command Prompt, or a Get-Content pipeline in PowerShell. Concatenation does not remove repeated headers or reconcile different formats—it simply joins content.
How do I combine text files into one?
Choose the files in the order you want them to appear, then direct their contents to a destination file. Keep the output file separate from the inputs: using the destination as an input can cause unwanted results.
Unix-like shell: macOS, Linux, or BSD
cat file1.txt file2.txt > combined.txtcat prints its file operands in command-line order, so the contents of file1.txt come before file2.txt in combined.txt. The > operator directs output to the destination. See the OpenBSD cat manual.
Windows Command Prompt
copy file1.txt + file2.txt Combined.txtThis documented copy form combines the named files into the destination. Windows documentation also shows a wildcard example for combining text files; use a wildcard only if the selected files and their order are appropriate for your task. PowerShell
Get-Content file1.txt, file2.txt | Set-Content combined.txtThis pipeline reads the two files and writes their content to the destination. Set-Content writes new content or replaces existing content. If you mean to add content to an existing destination rather than replace it, use Add-Content. Microsoft’s Get-Content documentation and Set-Content documentation describe these cmdlets.
What should I check before merging?
- Order: List inputs in the intended sequence. A wildcard may select files in an order you did not intend.
- Existing output: Decide whether to create or replace a destination, or append to one. In PowerShell,
Set-Contentreplaces existing content;Add-Contentappends. - Headers and repeated sections: Concatenation does not detect or remove duplicate headings, column names, or other repeated text.
- Encoding and line endings: PowerShell’s
Get-Contenthas an-Encodingparameter and ordinarily returns content as strings by line;-Rawreturns the file’s lines as one string. If the files use different encodings or exact line endings matter, verify behavior for your PowerShell version rather than assuming byte-for-byte preservation. - File type: These commands are for text. Microsoft’s copy documentation warns that combining binary files can produce an unusable result because of their internal formatting.
Is combining text files the same as merging their data?
No. Combining, or concatenating, puts file contents one after another. It does not compare records, resolve conflicts, remove duplicate rows, or adapt one file’s structure to another. If you need a single valid CSV, log, or other structured dataset, check whether the inputs share the same format and handle repeated headers or incompatible records separately.
