The fastest sustainable XP in Minecraft is usually a purpose-built mob farm. Community guides generally rank guardian farms first and Enderman farms a close second, while gold farms, dungeon spawners, furnaces, Nether quartz and sculk cover progressively earlier stages of a world. Exact rates change with Minecraft version, edition and farm design, so treat hourly figures as estimates rather than guarantees.
This guide orders the options by speed and progression requirement, then gives practical setup steps, XP rules, trade-offs and recovery advice for both Java and Bedrock.

Fastest XP methods at a glance
Choose the highest method you can actually build. A theoretically faster farm is not useful if you lack an ocean monument, End access, safe transport or the time to complete its engineering.
| Method | Typical position | Progression requirement | What else it produces | Evidence and rate caution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Guardian farm | Fastest in community rankings | Ocean monument and a large technical build; guides disagree about whether draining the monument is necessary | Guardian drops and prismarine-related materials | Raw speed is attributed to large XP orbs; published hourly numbers vary by version and design |
| Enderman farm | Nearly as fast as guardian farms in several guides | Reach the End by defeating the game | Ender pearls | Usually described as easier than a guardian farm; platform designs and rates differ |
| Gold or zombified-piglin farm | Strong mid-to-late-game option | Nether access and a farm design suited to your edition | Gold | One guide says a good design can reach level 100 in about an hour; this is a single-guide estimate |
| Dungeon spawner farm | Best practical early automated option | Find an active zombie or skeleton spawner | Mob drops such as bones, arrows or rotten flesh | Community guides describe it as an easy, reliable design for Bedrock and Java 1.26+ |
| Furnace or smelter farm | Passive, low-risk early and mid game | Fuel, a furnace and a renewable smeltable crop or block | Cooked food, dried kelp, green dye or other smelted outputs | Rates depend on fuel, input and edition; summarized tutorial figures are listed below |
| Nether quartz mining | Fastest manual burst before farms | Nether access and suitable tools | Quartz for redstone and building | One guide claims three to four levels in minutes at Y=15; this is not a universal rate |
| Sculk farming | Useful when a sculk area is already available | Access to sculk blocks and a safe collection method | Sculk blocks, sensors and shriekers | Summarized wiki values are one XP per sculk block and five per sensor or shrieker broken |
For a new world, start with a spawner or furnace. After Nether access, quartz provides immediate manual levels. Once you can reach the End, an Enderman farm is generally the most approachable high-speed project. Guardian farms are the specialist choice when maximum throughput justifies a much larger build.

How Minecraft XP actually works
Who gets credit for a kill
Most mobs release XP orbs only when the final damage is credited to a player or that player’s tamed wolf. A fall, lava stream, suffocation chamber or other fully automatic death does not normally pay XP. Design the killing point so you can deliver the finishing hit, or use a mechanism that still assigns the kill to you under your edition’s rules.
Hostile mobs generally award more XP than passive mobs. Baby animals, bats, golems and villagers give no XP when killed. This is why a hostile-mob farm is a better leveling engine than simply breeding animals.

Orb size matters
The game can absorb only about 10 XP orbs per second, according to community guides. Guardian farms are favored partly because each guardian produces comparatively large orbs, allowing more experience to pass through that absorption limit than a stream of tiny orbs. A farm’s visible mob count is therefore not the same thing as its usable XP rate.
Mob values that affect farm choice
- An Enderman is summarized as dropping about 5 XP, represented by orb splits such as 3, 2 and 1.
- A guardian is summarized as dropping about 10 XP; another source describes two large orbs worth 7 and 3.
- The Ender Dragon awards 12,000 XP on the first kill and 500 XP on subsequent kills.
Protect your levels
When a player dies, the game drops 7 × the player’s current level in XP, capped at 100 points; any remaining experience is lost. Store valuable items, use safe routes and retrieve your dropped orbs quickly before attempting a dangerous farm or Nether mining run.

Guardian farms: the highest-throughput choice
Community guides rank guardian farms at the top for raw XP per hour. Guardians are valuable because one source gives roughly twice the XP of an Enderman and their larger orbs work well against the game’s orb-absorption limit. The price is construction effort around an ocean monument and careful control of where guardians can spawn and die.
What you need
- An ocean monument that you can reach and secure.
- A design compatible with your edition and current game version.
- Large quantities of building blocks, lighting or water-control materials, storage and a safe player kill chamber.
- A plan for monument conditions: published guides disagree on whether the monument must be drained, so follow the instructions for the exact design rather than assuming draining is mandatory.
Build and operate it safely
- Locate and mark the monument, then establish a secure route from your base.
- Clear hostile threats and build the spawning and collection areas specified by your chosen design.
- Route guardians into a chamber where you can deliver the final hit; a fully automatic fall or environmental kill may produce drops without XP.
- Add storage and a way to turn the farm off when you are not collecting experience.
- Test the farm for several minutes in your edition. Check that guardians reach the kill point, XP orbs can reach you and no alternate water or cave space is stealing spawns.
Do not rely on spectacular hourly figures circulated online. A frequently repeated claim of roughly 180,000 XP per hour has no retrievable supporting source in the available material. Treat all guardian rates as design- and version-dependent estimates.

An Enderman farm requires reaching the End, so it is not an early-game solution. Once the dragon is defeated, however, community guides describe Enderman designs as nearly as fast as guardian farms and considerably easier to build. They also supply Ender pearls for travel, trading and item crafting.
Planning an Enderman farm
- Choose a design written for your edition. Platform dimensions, spawn-proofing instructions and the recommended location differ between Java and Bedrock guides.
- Build the spawning platform and the path that moves Endermen toward the collection point exactly as the design specifies.
- Keep the player at the intended distance from the platform so Endermen spawn efficiently and remain within the farm’s control area.
- Use a player-controlled finishing hit if XP is the goal. A design that kills Endermen entirely through falls or other environmental damage may provide pearls and drops without experience.
- Stand at the collection point, confirm that orbs reach you and monitor the rate before expanding storage or adding more platforms.
Online calculators sometimes advertise 60–100 or more levels per hour for an End farm. That figure is far above most guide estimates and should be treated as an outlier, not a promised result.

Gold and zombified-piglin farms
A gold farm is a useful compromise when you have Nether infrastructure but do not want to engineer a monument. It combines XP with a renewable gold supply, making the time spent building it useful even when you are not leveling.
Community material places this option below guardian and Enderman farms and says a good design can reach level 100 in roughly one hour. That is a single-guide claim: rates depend on the design, edition, spawning conditions and how consistently you perform the player kill. Follow an edition-specific tutorial, make the Nether route safe, and verify that the farm’s kill mechanism credits you with the final hit.

Spawner farms for immediate early-game XP
A nearby zombie or skeleton spawner is usually the simplest automated source before you can reach the End. Community guides call the dungeon spawner farm an easy, reliable design for Bedrock and Java 1.26+. It is slower than specialized late-game farms but requires far fewer resources.
Step-by-step setup
- Find a dungeon containing a zombie or skeleton spawner and mark the coordinates. Do not break the spawner.
- Light the room while you work so mobs stop appearing during construction.
- Expand the chamber and build the water channels, drop or transport route and collection area required by your design.
- Place the player kill point close enough for the spawner to remain active while you stand there.
- Remove temporary lighting, close gaps and test the flow. Zombies or skeletons should arrive at the same collection point without escaping.
- Use a sword or other player-controlled attack to finish mobs and collect XP. Sort the resulting drops into storage.
Common spawner problems
- No mobs: you may be outside the spawner’s activation range, or caves and dark spaces may be consuming the local mob allowance.
- Mobs stop in the channel: inspect water-source placement and remove ledges where entities can stand.
- XP does not appear: make sure your attack, rather than a fall or environmental damage, is the final damage.
- Skeletons or zombies escape: add full-block barriers and check the collection chamber from every approach.
Furnace and smelter farms: passive but predictable
Furnace farms do not match mob farms for peak speed, but they can produce experience while you gather fuel and input materials. The summarized Minecraft farming tutorial reports the following figures under its stated assumptions:
Rank #4
- Skins! We have biome settlers, city folk, town folk, and more!
- The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen
- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
| Input or setup | Reported XP output | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| One-furnace cactus setup | About 360 XP per real-time hour | Burns about two stacks, or 120 cactus, per Minecraft day; tutorial year was not stated |
| Potatoes | About 252 XP per hour | Guide figure under its own fuel and throughput assumptions |
| Kelp | About 72 XP per hour | Guide figure under its own fuel and throughput assumptions |
Cactus XP differs between Java and Bedrock, and all furnace rates change with fuel supply, input availability, the number of furnaces and whether you collect output continuously. Use the values as planning baselines, not cross-edition guarantees.

Basic smelter workflow
- Place one or more furnaces where you can safely access their output.
- Provide a renewable smeltable input such as cactus, potatoes or kelp and a dependable fuel source.
- Load the furnace and let it process while you perform other work.
- Collect the smelted output at the furnace interface so the stored XP is awarded to you.
- Expand only after confirming that your input and fuel production can keep every furnace operating.
A smelter is particularly useful as a background system, not as the fastest emergency leveling method.

Nether quartz mining
Quartz is a strong manual option immediately after Nether access because each vein also supplies a building and redstone material. One guide suggests strip mining around Y=15 and claims three to four levels in minutes. That is a single-guide estimate, not a fixed game rate; vein density, tool speed, route safety and edition all change the result.
- Prepare fire protection, food, blocks, a pickaxe and a clearly marked return route.
- Reach the suggested mining level for your guide and expose ore with a controlled tunnel rather than opening a large, unsafe cavern.
- Mine visible quartz, watch for lava and hostile mobs, and bank the ore before making another long run.
Sculk collection
Sculk can provide XP when you already have access to it. The summarized wiki tutorial assigns 1 XP to a broken sculk block and 5 XP to each sculk sensor or sculk shrieker. Because the value depends on having a safe, renewable collection area, sculk is a niche method rather than a universal replacement for a mob farm.

One-time XP sources and what not to expect
The Ender Dragon is an enormous one-time boost: the first kill awards 12,000 XP and later kills award 500. It is excellent for unlocking levels after progression milestones, but it cannot replace a repeatable farm.

Check the current Minecraft Wiki for the edition and version you play before committing to a numeric target.
A progression plan that minimizes wasted effort
- Early survival: use a discovered zombie or skeleton spawner if one is nearby. Otherwise, smelt renewable crops and collect the output while you gather resources.
- Nether stage: mine quartz for immediate manual levels and establish safe routes. Build a gold farm if you need both XP and gold and have the required infrastructure.
- End stage: after defeating the dragon, build an Enderman farm using an edition-specific design. This is usually the best balance of speed and construction effort for a first high-output farm.
- Technical endgame: build a guardian farm when you need the highest sustained throughput and can support its larger footprint and testing process.
- Always: preserve levels before dangerous construction, test kill credit, and record your own rate for your exact version instead of copying a headline number.
Edition, version and rate caveats
Java and Bedrock do not always share spawning behavior, furnace output or farm efficiency. Community rates can change with updates, and some guides describe different platform layouts for the same farm. The “Java 1.26+” spawner description, the cactus, potato and kelp figures, and the quartz estimate each come from summarized sources with their own assumptions; none should be generalized to every release.
When a number matters, identify the edition, game version, farm design, player position, collection method and measurement period. If a guide does not state those conditions, use its result only as a rough comparison. Recheck the current Minecraft Wiki before building around a specific hourly target.
Quick Recap
Fast troubleshooting checklist
- XP orbs never arrive: confirm the player or tamed wolf receives the kill credit.
- Orbs pile up but leveling feels slow: the farm may be producing many small orbs faster than the game can absorb them; improve pathing to the collection point.
- Mob output is low: check activation distance, spawn-proof nearby spaces and confirm that the design matches your edition.
- Farm works briefly, then stops: inspect entity cramming, blocked water, storage overflow and alternate spawn locations.
- You lose levels during construction: bank items and experience, improve lighting and barriers, and create a tested escape route before expanding.
