To cold message an influencer, explain why you chose that creator, who you are, what collaboration you are proposing, what compensation or exchange is involved, and what simple next step you want. Use the contact route the creator provides or prefers; neither email nor direct message is proven to work better in every case.
How do I cold message influencers?
Make the first message specific enough that the creator can tell it was meant for them, and clear enough to evaluate without asking what the offer is. Name a real post, video, or project and explain its genuine connection to your brand or proposal. Generic compliments do not explain why the collaboration makes sense.
Then identify yourself and your role, describe the proposed collaboration, and state what you know about its scope and timing. Be explicit about whether it is paid, gifted, affiliate-based, or still exploratory. If details such as budget or timing are not settled, say so rather than implying that a campaign or agreement is already confirmed. End with one easy next step, such as asking whether the creator is open to reviewing a brief.
Keep the message concise enough to scan, but there is no established word-count formula. The practical test is whether the creator can quickly understand why you contacted them, what you are offering, and what you are asking them to do.

What should I say when reaching out to an influencer?
Adapt this template to the actual creator and offer. Replace every bracketed field, and do not include details you cannot substantiate.
Email template
Subject: [Creator name] × [Brand] — [specific collaboration idea]
Hi [Name],
I’m [your name], [role] at [brand]. I found your [specific post/video/project] about [specific topic], and [brief, genuine reason it connects to the brand or audience].
We’re exploring [specific proposal: paid post, gifted product with no posting obligation, affiliate arrangement, or other format]. The scope would be [deliverable/timing if known], and [state budget/rate approach or clearly say details are open].
Would you be open to [one next step, such as reviewing a short brief or sharing rates and availability]? If this is not a fit, no worries.
Thanks,
[Name]
A product gift should not be presented as payment. If you are offering a gift without requiring a post, say that plainly; if posting is expected, make the terms clear and do not treat the arrangement as an informal gift.

Hi [Name] — I’m [name] from [brand]. I liked your [specific work] on [topic] because [real fit]. We’re exploring [plain offer and compensation status]. Would you be open to me sending details here or by email? If you prefer another contact route, I’m happy to use it.
The DM version introduces the proposal and asks permission to send more detail; it does not need to squeeze a full brief into a social message.

Use the channel the creator lists for business inquiries or says they prefer. Email gives you room for a subject line and a fuller proposal, but it can still be filtered or missed. A DM can feel more conversational, yet it may land in message requests or be overlooked. No reviewed evidence establishes a universal winner between the two channels.
Rank #3
| Choice | When it fits | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| A professional or partnership email is listed or supplied. | Use a clear subject and concise pitch with the offer and next step; email can still be filtered or missed. | |
| DM | The creator invites business inquiries through that platform, or email is unavailable. | Open briefly, state the offer and compensation status, and ask whether they want details there or by email. Message requests can be overlooked. |
How should I follow up?
Choose timing based on campaign needs and any contact preferences the creator has stated. There is no universal follow-up interval supported by the guidance here. If you follow up, send one concise note that identifies the original proposal, adds useful context if you have it, and makes declining easy. Do not imply urgency, scarcity, or a prior agreement unless it is true.
Hi [Name] — just following up on my note about [specific proposal]. If it may be a fit, I can send the brief and compensation details. If the timing or idea is not right, no reply is needed. Thanks, [Name].

For US-facing endorsements, Federal Trade Commission staff guidance says an endorser should clearly and conspicuously disclose a material connection to a brand. That can include payment, free or discounted products, or personal, family, employment, or business relationships. The disclosure should appear with the endorsement and be hard to miss, rather than buried in a hashtag pile or placed only behind a “more” expansion. See the FTC’s Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers.

In a 2017 statement, FTC staff cautioned: “Vague terms like ‘Thank you,’ ‘#partner,’ and ‘#sp’ aren’t likely to explain to people the nature of the relationship between an influencer and the brand.” The FTC also reported sending more than 90 letters to influencers and marketers reminding them to disclose relationships when promoting or endorsing products on social media; that is a historical 2017 figure, not a current enforcement count or a measure of outreach performance. See the FTC’s 2017 release.
Instagram describes branded content as creator or publisher content featuring or influenced by a business partner in exchange for value, and says a paid partnership label is required when payment is exchanged for posting. Because platform rules can change, check Instagram’s current branded content guidance before a post goes live. The FTC information here concerns US-facing endorsements; other jurisdictions may have different requirements, so this is not a substitute for jurisdiction-specific legal advice.
