Amazon treats viewed products, store recommendations, personalized ads, and future browsing linked to your account as separate privacy controls. Use Your Browsing History to edit viewed items, Improve Your Recommendations to remove products from recommendation inputs, and Your Ads Privacy Choices for advertising personalization. Signing out and blocking cookies addresses future account linkage, but can disable cart, checkout, and sign-in functions.
Choose the control that matches your goal
“Clear my Amazon history” can mean several different things. Amazon’s US Privacy Notice identifies separate pages and settings, so changing one does not automatically change the others.

The source for these control names is Amazon.com’s US Privacy Notice, last updated June 30, 2026. It states, “You can edit Your Browsing History, as well.”

What you can and cannot verify in the current interface
The two account pages named by Amazon—Your Browsing History and Improve Your Recommendations—were unavailable when checked and returned a 503 service error. That means the control names and purposes are documented, but a current click-by-click layout, button wording, or bulk-clear option cannot be confirmed here.

When you open either page, follow the controls actually displayed in your account. Do not rely on an old screenshot or assume that a button called “Clear all” exists. Amazon can change page layout, sign-in prompts, and the way items are grouped by region, device, or account type.
Before you start
Decide which outcome you need before changing anything. If another person merely sees a product in the visible history list, start with Your Browsing History. If Amazon is suggesting similar products because of one item, use Improve Your Recommendations. If the unwanted personalization appears as an advertisement, use Your Ads Privacy Choices. If you are planning unlinked browsing in the future, sign out and consider cookies.
- Have the correct Amazon account credentials available. A household may use several accounts, and a change made in one account does not establish a change in another.
- Identify the device and browser where the issue appears. History and cookie behavior can differ between a signed-in browser profile and another profile or device.
- Expect to verify each result separately. A page showing that a history entry disappeared is not proof that a recommendation input or advertising preference also changed.
- Read confirmation text before accepting a broad action. The currently available pages were not accessible for testing, so the scope of any bulk control must be determined from the wording shown in your account.
Remove or edit products in Your Browsing History
Use this route when your immediate goal is to hide or remove products from the list of items you viewed.
Steps
- Sign in to the Amazon account whose viewed items you want to manage.
- Open the account area and select Your Browsing History. Amazon’s Privacy Notice identifies this page as the place where customers can edit browsing history.
- Review the products currently listed. Use the item-level controls shown on the live page to remove or otherwise edit an entry.
- If the page presents a broader history-management control, read its confirmation text before applying it. The currently available bulk-control wording was not verified, so do not assume that one control removes every related record.
- Refresh the page or reopen it after saving to check whether the entry is no longer displayed. If it remains, confirm that you are signed in to the intended account and that the page has finished loading.
What this action is for
This process changes the account’s editable viewed-item history. It is appropriate when a product appears in the visible history and you no longer want that entry shown there.
What it does not promise
- It does not delete purchase or order history. Amazon lists purchase and order history separately from the editable browsing-history control.
- It does not prove that Amazon has erased every internal copy of information associated with your activity.
- It does not guarantee that all recommendations immediately change. Recommendations can have separate inputs, which you manage on Improve Your Recommendations.
Remove a viewed product from recommendation inputs
Use this route when the problem is not the visible history list but a recommendation that seems to be based on something you viewed.
Steps
- Sign in to the relevant Amazon account.
- Open the account area and go to Improve Your Recommendations.
- Find the product or other item you do not want used as a recommendation input.
- On that item’s page, locate the “Use this item for recommendations” setting described in Amazon’s Privacy Notice.
- Uncheck the setting. Amazon describes unchecking it as removing that item from recommendation inputs.
- Use any save, confirmation, or refresh control that the current page provides, then review the item’s state again.
Why this is different from deleting history
A browsing-history entry answers “What products did I view?” A recommendation setting answers “May this item be used to shape store suggestions?” The same product can therefore be absent from one view while still requiring a separate change in the other. Amazon documents these as separate account controls rather than a single master switch.

If the recommendation remains
Removing one item from recommendation inputs does not establish that every recommendation signal has been removed. Other products, account activity, or settings may still influence what Amazon displays. The official notice does not promise an instant, account-wide reset after one checkbox is changed, so judge the result by the control’s stated scope rather than expecting every suggestion to disappear.
Change personalized advertising with Your Ads Privacy Choices
Recommendations inside the Amazon store and personalized advertising are related to personalization but are not the same setting. If your goal is to reduce or change ads selected for you, use Your Ads Privacy Choices.
Steps
- Sign in to the account for which you want to change advertising preferences.
- Open the account privacy controls and select Your Ads Privacy Choices.
- Read the options shown for your region and account, then select the preference that matches your advertising objective.
- Save or confirm the change if Amazon requests it, and keep a note of the setting you selected.
This route should not be described as clearing viewed products or deleting store-recommendation inputs. It addresses personalized advertising preferences, while Your Browsing History and Improve Your Recommendations address the other two tasks.
Prevent future browsing from being linked to the account
For browsing you do not want associated with a signed-in Amazon account, Amazon’s notice points to two measures: sign out and block browser cookies. These measures affect future browsing behavior; they are not a substitute for editing entries already shown in your account history.
Sign out
- Use Amazon’s account menu to sign out before visiting products you do not want tied to the account.
- Check that the site is no longer showing you as signed in before continuing.
Block cookies, with the stated trade-off
- Open your browser’s privacy or cookie settings.
- Block the Amazon cookies or cookie categories available in your browser’s controls.
- Return to Amazon and verify which functions still work.
Amazon warns that rejecting cookies can prevent use of the cart, checkout, or sign-in functions. Cookie blocking can therefore make ordinary shopping impractical. If you need to purchase something, you may have to restore the required cookie setting and sign in, which changes the privacy trade-off for that session.

- Orders and purchases: Amazon’s notice treats purchase and order history as separate account information. Editing browsing history is not an order-deletion procedure.
- All Amazon-held information: The documented browsing-history control is an editing feature, not a statement that every related record is deleted from Amazon’s systems.
- Every recommendation: Removing a product’s recommendation input does not establish that all other inputs have been removed or that the storefront will immediately show a completely different set of suggestions.
- All advertising: Your Ads Privacy Choices governs personalized advertising preferences. It should not be represented as an opt-out from every advertisement or as a history-clearing tool.
- Other browsers or accounts: A change made while signed in to one account does not establish that another Amazon account, browser profile, or device has been changed.
- Future activity after signing in: Signing out and blocking cookies addresses the future session in which you apply those measures; signing back in or changing cookie settings changes that arrangement.
Use the controls in the right order
There is no need to change every setting for every concern. A focused sequence limits disruption:
- Start with the narrowest goal: remove a visible item from Your Browsing History, or remove a recommendation input from Improve Your Recommendations.
- If ads are the separate concern, review Your Ads Privacy Choices rather than assuming the first change covers advertising.
- Only then consider signing out and blocking cookies for later browsing. This is the option with the clearest shopping-function trade-off.
- After each action, return to the same control and verify its displayed state. Record which account and browser you used if several people share a device.
This order also makes troubleshooting easier. If a recommendation changes after you edit its checkbox, you know which setting produced the change. If it does not, you can investigate other inputs without mistakenly undoing an advertising choice or disrupting checkout.
Which workflow should you use?
You only want a product gone from the visible history list
Go directly to Your Browsing History and use the item controls displayed there. Do not change advertising preferences unless ads are also your concern.
You want Amazon to stop using one viewed product for store suggestions
Open Improve Your Recommendations, find that item, and uncheck “Use this item for recommendations”. Editing the browsing-history list is optional and addresses a different display.
You are concerned about ads rather than store suggestions
Use Your Ads Privacy Choices. Changing the recommendation checkbox is not a replacement for an advertising preference.
You want to browse privately before deciding whether to sign in
Sign out and consider blocking cookies, but expect the cart, checkout, or sign-in limitations Amazon describes. This is a functional trade-off, not a way to retroactively erase earlier account activity.

You want all four outcomes
- Edit the relevant entries in Your Browsing History.
- Remove unwanted recommendation inputs in Improve Your Recommendations.
- Set advertising preferences in Your Ads Privacy Choices.
- For later browsing, sign out and apply cookie blocking when the loss of shopping functions is acceptable.
Troubleshooting when an item still appears
The history page will not load
- Confirm that you are signed in to the intended Amazon account.
- Reload the page and try again later if Amazon returns a service error.
- Try the account area in another supported browser or a private window, while remembering that private browsing does not itself edit account history.
- Do not infer that a temporary 503 error means the item was or was not removed; wait for the page to load and verify the displayed state.
The product is gone from history but recommendations did not change
Use Improve Your Recommendations separately. Amazon documents the recommendation checkbox as a distinct control, so a history edit alone is not evidence that the recommendation input was removed.
The recommendation control is missing
- Check that you opened Improve Your Recommendations, not only Your Browsing History.
- Look for the item-level setting described as “Use this item for recommendations”.
- Because the current live layout was not verifiable, follow the labels and options actually presented in your account rather than relying on an older guide’s button names.
Shopping stops working after cookie changes
Restore the cookie setting required by your browser and Amazon, then sign in if you need cart, checkout, or account functions. Amazon explicitly warns that rejecting cookies can disable those features.
A privacy-conscious routine for future shopping
Use the least disruptive control that solves the problem. If a single product is embarrassing or irrelevant, remove that item from the recommendation inputs instead of changing every privacy setting. If the concern is a visible list, edit browsing history. If the concern is advertising, change the ad preference. Reserve cookie blocking for sessions where avoiding account linkage is more important than cart, checkout, and sign-in convenience.
Review the scope after each change: history visibility, recommendation input, advertising personalization, and future account linkage are four different questions. Amazon’s June 30, 2026 Privacy Notice provides the control names and the stated cookie trade-off, but it does not establish a universal “erase everything” button or guarantee an immediate recommendation reset.

How do I stop Amazon recommendations based on something I viewed?
Open Improve Your Recommendations, locate the item, and uncheck “Use this item for recommendations”. Amazon describes that action as removing the item from recommendation inputs.
Is Amazon’s ad opt-out the same as clearing browsing history?
No. Use Your Ads Privacy Choices for personalized advertising preferences. It does not serve as the browsing-history or store-recommendation control.
Can I browse Amazon without linking activity to my account?

Why does a product still influence recommendations after I removed it from history?
Browsing history and recommendation inputs are separate controls. Remove the item from Improve Your Recommendations as well, and do not expect Amazon’s notice to guarantee an instant account-wide reset.
Does private browsing erase Amazon history?
No. A private window can limit local browser storage, but it does not edit an account’s existing history. Use Amazon’s account controls for entries already displayed there.
