To clear up internal storage on a Samsung phone, first check Settings > Device care or Battery and device care > Storage to see what is using space. Then remove files you no longer need, clear selected apps’ caches, or move files to supported external storage. Avoid tapping Clear data unless you intend to reset that app.
Check what is taking up space
- Open Settings.
- Tap Device care or Battery and device care, then tap Storage.
- Review the categories and any large, duplicate, or unused files shown before deleting anything.
Menu names, locations, and the categories displayed vary by Galaxy model and software version. If you do not see the same path, search Settings for “Storage” or open the My Files app to review files directly. Samsung’s storage guide and Device Care guide describe the available tools.
Delete files you no longer need
Review downloads and other files in My Files
Open My Files and inspect Downloads and other folders. You can also use the Storage categories to find files such as large videos. Delete only items you recognize and no longer need; a folder or file name alone may not tell you whether another app relies on it.

In Gallery, look for duplicate or unwanted photos, videos, and screenshots. Confirm the selected items before deleting them, especially when selecting multiple files.

Empty Trash or Recycle bin when you want permanent removal
Deleted files may remain in Trash or Recycle bin and continue to occupy space until you empty it. Check the bin’s contents first: emptying it removes those items permanently from that location. Samsung’s file-management instructions explain how to locate and manage files; the exact controls can vary by model and software.
Clear an app’s cache without resetting it
An app cache is temporary data. Clearing it is different from deleting the app’s saved data, although an app may take time to rebuild cached files after you use it again.

- Open Settings > Apps.
- Select the app you want to check.
- Tap Storage, then Clear cache.
The menu may differ by software version or app. Samsung says: “The only way to clear the cache on every app at the same time would be to perform a factory reset on your phone or tablet.” A factory reset is not a routine way to free space; it is a much broader action than clearing an individual app’s cache. Use Clear data only when you mean to reset the app
Clear data resets the selected app to its factory-default settings and removes its saved personal settings or data, according to Samsung. Before choosing it, check whether you can sign back in and whether the app’s content is synced or backed up somewhere you can access. Some system apps do not offer a way to clear their data.

Move files off the phone instead of deleting them
Use a microSD card only if your model supports one
On a Galaxy phone with a supported microSD slot, My Files can be used to select files and move or copy them to the card. This can preserve photos, videos, and other supported files while freeing internal space. Card support varies by model, and Samsung warns that many apps cannot be moved to an SD card; do not assume a card expands app storage for every phone or app.
Transfer files to USB or SD storage with OTG
Samsung documents connecting USB or SD storage through an OTG connection on supported devices. Check that your phone and connection support the storage device before relying on this method; available ports and steps vary.

Transfer files to a computer over USB
Connect the phone to a computer with a USB cable and select the phone’s file-transfer mode if prompted. Copy the files you want to keep, confirm that the copies are accessible on the computer, and only then remove the phone’s originals. Samsung’s Galaxy file-management guide covers external storage and computer transfers.
Consider other cleanup options carefully
- Unused apps: Uninstall apps you no longer use, or disable eligible apps if that option is available. Check for saved content you need before removing an app.
- Old messages: Samsung’s U.S. storage guide describes automatic deletion of old messages as an option. Use it only if you are comfortable losing older conversations.
- Samsung Cloud backups: Review a backup before deleting it. A backup may be the only copy of information you later need.
These options and their controls are not available in the same way on every device. Samsung’s U.S. storage guidance covers these additional cleanup choices.

Storage is not the same as memory
Storage is space for files and apps. Memory is working space used by apps while they run. In Device Care, Memory > Clean now stops background apps to free memory; it does not delete photos or downloads to make room for files or app installs. For that goal, use Storage and review files or apps instead.
