If your PS5 has sluggish menus, missing or lingering game icons, or system features that misbehave, use Safe Mode and choose Clear System Software Cache or Rebuild Database. Both are maintenance operations and do not perform a factory reset. Do not choose Reset PS5 or Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) unless you have backed up your data, because those options erase user data.
What clearing the cache and rebuilding the database actually do
These two Safe Mode options address different layers of the console. Clearing the system software cache removes temporary system data that can become invalid or interfere with features. Rebuilding the database scans the PS5 storage and creates a new index of the content on the drive. Sony specifically describes the rebuild as useful when, for example, a deleted game icon still appears on the Home screen.
| Safe Mode option | Purpose | User games and saves | When to try it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear System Software Cache | Removes temporary system cache data | Preserved | System-feature problems, menu instability, or performance drops |
| Rebuild Database | Scans the drive and creates a new database of system content | Preserved | Incorrect content listings, lingering icons, or storage-index problems |
| Repair Console Storage | Checks and repairs the console’s storage structure | Preserved; Sony states this option does not erase data | Storage-related warnings or suspected file-structure issues |
| Restore Default Settings | Returns settings to their defaults | Games, apps, screenshots, video clips, and saved data are not deleted | Settings corruption when a full reset is unnecessary |
| Reset PS5 | Factory reset | All user data is deleted | Only after a verified backup and a deliberate decision to erase the console |
| Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) | Erases the console and reinstalls system software | All user data is deleted | Last-resort software recovery, after backing up |
There is no published Sony figure for the percentage of problems fixed, the performance increase, or the duration of either maintenance operation. Treat cache clearing and database rebuilding as troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed speed upgrades.

Use a data-capable USB cable
Safe Mode requires a DualSense controller connected by USB. Use a cable that carries data as well as power; a charge-only cable may power the controller without allowing the PS5 to recognize it. Connect the controller directly to a USB port on the console rather than through a hub.

Protect the console from interruption
- Close any game if the console is still responsive, then shut it down normally when possible.
- Do not unplug the PS5 while it is writing to storage or while a Safe Mode operation is running.
- If you are considering a reset or system-software reinstall, make a USB or cloud backup before selecting that destructive option.
Know which problem you are trying to solve
Choose cache clearing for system-feature failures or a noticeable drop in general performance. Choose a database rebuild when the content listing appears wrong, such as an icon for a game you already deleted. If one game alone refuses to start, use the game-specific troubleshooting order later in this guide before jumping to a reset.
How to clear the PS5 system software cache
- Turn the PS5 off by holding the power button for about three seconds. Wait until the power indicator stops blinking and the console is fully off.
- Press and hold the power button again while the console is off. You will hear one beep when you press it. Keep holding the button until the second beep, which Sony says occurs about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the DualSense controller to the PS5 with the data-capable USB cable, then press the PS button.
- In the Safe Mode menu, select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
- Select Clear System Software Cache, then follow the on-screen prompts and allow the console to finish.
After the PS5 restarts, test the feature that was failing. For example, check whether menus respond normally, a system setting opens, or the previous performance symptom has stopped. If the same issue remains and your symptoms involve incorrect or stale content listings, return to Safe Mode and use the database-rebuild option instead.
How to rebuild the PS5 database
- Shut the PS5 down completely. Hold the power button for roughly three seconds and wait for the power indicator to stop blinking.
- With the console off, press and hold the power button. Release it after the second beep; the second beep is approximately seven seconds after the first.
- Attach the DualSense to the console with a USB data cable and press the PS button.
- Choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database in Safe Mode.
- Select Rebuild Database. The PS5 scans the drive and creates a new database of the content stored on the system.
A rebuild is intended to correct the console’s content index; it is not a method for deleting games or saved data. Do not interrupt power during the scan. When the PS5 returns to the normal interface, check the Home screen and your game library for the listing problem that prompted the rebuild.

Will either operation delete games or saved data?
No. Clearing the system software cache and rebuilding the database are maintenance actions, not factory resets. Your installed games, applications, screenshots, video clips, and saved data remain on the console. The same data-preserving boundary applies to Repair Console Storage; Sony states, “This option does not erase data.”
Restore Default Settings also does not delete games, apps, screenshots, video clips, or saved data, although it changes configuration settings back to their defaults. That makes it fundamentally different from the two reset choices.
Reset PS5 and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) are destructive. Sony states that reinstalling the console’s system software deletes all data on the console. Back up to USB or cloud storage before selecting either reset, and verify that the backup contains the saves or other files you need.

If Safe Mode will not start
Check the physical connections
Inspect the power, HDMI, and USB cables. Reseat each connection and try replacement cables if available. A controller that charges but is not detected can indicate a charge-only USB lead, so substitute a known data-capable cable.
Power-cycle the PS5
- Hold the PS5 power button until it beeps and the console powers down.
- Disconnect the power cable for 20 minutes. Sony specifies this interval for the Safe Mode power-cycle procedure.
- Reconnect the power cable and try the Safe Mode button sequence again: hold the power button and release after the second beep.
When Safe Mode keeps appearing
If the PS5 repeatedly boots into Safe Mode, choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, then select Clear System Software Cache. This is the targeted first option for a recurring Safe Mode cycle. If the console still cannot start normally, or Safe Mode remains inaccessible after the cable and power-cycle checks, use the official PlayStation Repairs diagnostic route rather than repeatedly forcing shutdowns.
What to do when one game will not start
Sony’s troubleshooting order for a game that fails to launch moves from the least disruptive checks to storage maintenance and, only later, system reinstallation:

- Restart the PS5. A normal restart can clear a transient launch state without changing installed content.
- Restore licenses. Use the account and system settings option that restores your digital game licenses, particularly when the error concerns ownership or access.
- Delete and reinstall the game. This removes the affected installation, so confirm that any save data you need is synchronized or backed up before deleting.
- Check system software. Install any available PS5 system-software update through the console’s settings.
- Use Clear Cache and Rebuild Database. Start with Clear System Software Cache for system-feature or performance symptoms; use Rebuild Database when the content index appears wrong.
- Consider reinstalling system software only as a later step. This erases console data, so back up first and understand that it is not equivalent to clearing a cache.
This sequence prevents a destructive reinstall from being used for a problem that may be fixed by a restart, license refresh, game reinstall, or maintenance operation.
Choosing the right Safe Mode option
Choose Clear System Software Cache when
- System features fail to open or behave unpredictably.
- The interface has become unusually sluggish and ordinary restarting has not helped.
- The PS5 repeatedly enters Safe Mode and Sony’s cable and power checks have not resolved it.
Choose Rebuild Database when
- A deleted game icon remains on the Home screen.
- Content listings, icons, or library information do not match what is installed.
- You suspect the console’s index of stored content is inconsistent rather than the game files themselves being damaged.
Choose Repair Console Storage when
- The console presents a storage-related warning or you have a specific reason to check the storage structure.
- You need a data-preserving storage repair; Sony says this option does not erase data.
Do not choose a reset merely to clear cache
Neither reset option is a stronger version of cache clearing. Reset PS5 and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) erase user data. They belong at the end of a recovery plan, after backups and after non-destructive measures have failed.

Using a cable that only charges
Power alone is not enough for Safe Mode controller input. Replace a charge-only cable with one that supports data communication.
Confusing a rebuild with a reset
Rebuild Database recreates the content index. Reset PS5 erases the console. Read the complete option name before confirming.
Interrupting storage maintenance
Do not remove power while the cache clear, database rebuild, or storage repair is running. An interruption can leave the console in a worse state and may force additional recovery steps.

Expecting a guaranteed speed increase
Sony identifies the cache option for system-feature issues or performance drops, but publishes no quantified improvement or success rate. Use the result of your specific symptom as the measure of whether the step helped.
When to stop troubleshooting yourself
Escalate to the official PlayStation Repairs diagnostic route when Safe Mode will not launch after checking or replacing the USB, HDMI, and power cables and completing the 20-minute power disconnection. Escalate as well when the console continues to return to Safe Mode after clearing the system software cache, or when the same failure persists through the non-destructive steps and the game-specific sequence.
Before any support-directed reset or system-software reinstall, make a USB or cloud backup. A reinstall is not a routine maintenance action: Sony states that it deletes all data on the console.
Quick Recap
Quick decision checklist
- System features or general performance problem: Safe Mode → Clear Cache and Rebuild Database → Clear System Software Cache.
- Stale or incorrect game icon/library listing: Safe Mode → Clear Cache and Rebuild Database → Rebuild Database.
- Storage warning: consider Repair Console Storage, which Sony says does not erase data.
- Safe Mode unavailable: check or replace USB, HDMI, and power cables; power off, disconnect power for 20 minutes, reconnect, and retry.
- Game will not start: restart, restore licenses, reinstall the game, check system software, then use the appropriate cache or database option.
- Considering a reset: back up first; both reset choices delete user data.
